Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Konsertstycken op.113/114 : klarinettistisk ekvilibrism under 1800-talet

Wetterbrandt, Gustav January 2018 (has links)
<p>F.J. Frédéric Chopin, Interpretation and Analysis Two Case Studies

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Pursuit of an informed approach to interpreting Frédéric Chopin’s music has been increasingly challenging in the twenty-first century. In the process of forming their unique voices, pianists turn to the sound recordings of some of the most notable pianistic figures in history. This document offers a detailed inspection of three revered recordings and, with the help of syntactic analysis, seeks an understanding of the extraordinary interpretational decisions of Alfred Cortot, Arthur Rubinstein and Dinu Lipatti. The examined works are Chopin’s Prelude in C Major, Op. 28, No. 1, and the Largo of the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 58. The analysis of the Prelude compares recorded performances of Alfred Cortot (ca. 1933-1934) and Arthur Rubinstein (ca. 1946) and explains how their vastly different interpretational choices can, through an analytical process, be traced to the harmonic and melodic implications of the score. Likewise, inspection of the Largo focuses on Dinu Lipatti’s performance (ca. 1947) and draws connections between his phrasing and critical characteristics of the movement. All three performances present exquisite examples of a style of expressive playing that seems to have fallen into disuse in the twenty-first century. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the performing style of Cortot, Rubinstein, and Lipatti, and also seeks to show connections between score analysis and interpretational decisions. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020

Stylistic Elements within the Texture and Formal Structure of Ernst von Dohnányi's Four Rhapsodies, op. 11

Hwang, So Myung (Sonia) 05 1900 (has links)
Hungarian pianist, composer, conductor, teacher and administrator, Ernst von Dohnányi (Ernö Dohnányi in Hungarian), was considered one of the most versatile musicians and the first architect of Hungary's musical culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century. Dohnányi composed the Four Rhapsodies, op. 11, between 1902 and 1903, and among his many piano compositions, op. 11 are regarded as some of his most substantial works. Without directly imitating the earlier works of Liszt and Brahms, Dohnányi contributed to the rhapsody tradition with op. 11 by using his own unique stylistic compositional elements in the textural and formal structure. Texture and form are the most indicative characteristics of his rhapsodic language because of the improvisational nature that permeates his compositional style in the rhapsodies. In this dissertation the works are examined from within its textural and formal structure. Within texture, rhythm and accompanimental figurations are examined. Each rhapsody's structural organization, including references to eighteenth-century forms, and the cyclical elements in the work is analyzed. Background information on Dohnányi and a brief history of the rhapsody in the 19th century is also included.

Using Paired Excerpts from Robert Schumann's "Album for the Young," Op. 68 and Lowell Liebermann's "Album for the Young," Op. 43 as a Teaching Resource to Make a Smoother Transition from Romantic to Modern Piano Music for Young Students

Cho, Kyungrae 08 1900 (has links)
The first chapter introduces the purpose and significance of this study for the piano teacher who wants to teach twentieth-century piano music effectively at the elementary or intermediate level, combining it and comparing it with nineteenth-century piano music. The second chapter presents an overview of both Schumann and Liebermann's Album for the Young. In the third chapter, the two collections are analyzed pedagogically and compared in detail. The study should provide piano teachers with an understanding of the musical concepts of each piece and how to effectively teach students about twentieth-century music by pairing them.

An Introduction to Selected Character Pieces for Piano by Robert Muczynski

Oh, Joo Young January 2016 (has links)
Robert Muczynski (1929-2010), composer, pianist, and educator, is a noteworthy American musician from our time. His prowess as a pianist undoubtedly accounts for the striking number of pieces he wrote for the piano, namely, one concerto, preludes, sonatas, suites, a toccata, and variations. Out of a total of forty-eight pieces with opus numbers, seventeen are for solo piano. This document contains an overview of Muczynski's life as a composer and musician, with an emphasis on his solo piano compositions. The body of the document traces sources of Muczynski's compositional style, especially the influence of Alexander Tcherepnin, his composition teacher and mentor, and Sergei Prokofiev. An analysis of some of Muczynski's shorter piano solo pieces follows: Six Preludes, op. 6, Suite for Piano, op. 13, and Toccata, op. 15. This analysis demonstrates that Muczynski's short piano pieces often exhibit a persistent focus on one generative musical idea within each piece, usually consisting of unifying etude-like material. For variety and color, he relies on frequent changes of metric pulse, sudden accents, highly chromatic harmony and melody, and an extreme range of sound. These stylistic traits are consistent with those previously identified by other scholars in his larger piano compositions.

METHODS DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL GEL ELECTROPHORESIS AND MASS SPECTROMETRY IN PROTEOMICS

Rajagopal, Meena Uma 01 January 2006 (has links)
The development of a highly sensitive ruthenium-based fluorescent staining solution isdescribed in this dissertation. The in-house synthesized ruthenium complex (RuMS)containing both sulfonated and non-sulfonated ligand has detection limit of 1 ng ofprotein that is better than colloidal coomassie, silver and ruthenium complex containingall sulfonated ligands (RuBPS). RuMS stain has 100-fold dynamic range and does notinterfere with subsequent mass spectral identification of proteins. The capability of inhousesynthesis of the staining solution makes it a viable cost-effective alternative to theexpensive commercially available fluorescent stain, Sypro Ruby. The low detection limit, broad linear dynamic range and compatibility with mass spectrometry, make thedevelopment of this stain a worthwhile pursuit. The staining solution was utilized insubsequent applications of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) technology.Proteomics methodology utilizing 2-DE and mass spectrometry was applied toinvestigate the effect of malathion on the proteome of human neuroblastoma cells. Results indicated that out of 122 proteins that were identified from the neuroblastomaproteome, sixteen proteins were down-regulated while five proteins were significantlyup-regulated after treatment with malathion. Significant down-regulation of calciummodulators like calmodulin and calgizarrin and other key chaperones makes themalathion-treated cells highly prone to oxidative stress. With increased awareness inpesticide related adverse effects, identification of altered proteins in malathion-treatedhuman neuroblastoma cells is a critical finding.Proteomics is a major area of research in the identification of biomarkers for diseases. Anovel immunoprecipitation method developed in this work allowed for successfulisolation and identification of albumin-interactome in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that isusually under-represented in standard CSF analysis using 2-DE. A key finding is thedifferential expression of various isoforms of proteins in CSF albumin-interactome fromAlzheimer's disease (AD) subjects. The data implicate the acidic isoform ofprostaglandin D2 synthase (PGDS2) as a potential biomarker for AD. An understandingof the differential expression of these protein isoforms in AD will provide insight into theetiology of the disease and this can have far-reaching implication on drug developmentleading to the cure or even preventation of the disease.
