Das Libretto zu Carl Maria von Webers Oberon

Schreiter, Solveig 06 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)

A software restructuring tool for oberon

Eloff, Johannes J. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Software restructuring is a form of perfective maintenance that modifies the structure of a program's source code. lts goal is increased maintainability to better facilitate other maintenance activities, such as adding new functionality or correcting previously undetected errors. The modification of structure is achieved by applying transformations to the source code of a software system. Software engineers often attempt to restructure software by manually transforming the source code. This approach may lead to undesirable and undetectable changes in its behaviour. Ensuring that manual transformations preserve functionality during restructuring is difficult; guaranteeing it is almost impossible. One solution to the problem of manual restructuring is automation through use of a restructuring tool. The tool becomes responsible to examine each transformation and determine its impact on the software's behaviour. If a transformation preserves functionality, it may be applied to produce new source code. The tool only automates the application of transformations. The decision regarding which transformation to apply in a specific situation still resides with the maintainer. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a restructuring tool for the Oberon language, a successor of Pascal and Modula-2, under the PC Native Oberon operating system. The process of creating an adequate abstraction of a program's structure and its use to apply transformations and generate new source code are investigated. Transformations can be divided into different classes: Scoping, Syntactic, Control flow and Abstraction transformations. The restructuring tool described in this thesis contains implementations from all four classes. Informal arguments regarding the correctness of each transformation are also presented.

On providing an efficient and reliable virtual block storage service

Esterhuyse, Eben 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis describes the design and implementation of a data storage service. Many clients can be served simultaneously in an environment where processes execute on different physical machines and communicate via message passing primitives. The service is provided by two separate servers: one that functions at the disk block level and another that maintains files. A prototype system was developed first in the form of a simple file store. The prototype served two purposes: (1) it extended the single-user Oberon system to create a multiuser system suitable to support group work in laboratories, and (2) it provided a system that could be measured to obtain useful data to design the final system. Clients access the service from Oberon workstations. The Oberon file system (known as the Ceres file system) normally stores files on a local disk. This system was modified to store files on a remote Unix machine. Heavily used files are cached to improve the efficiency of the system. In the final version of the system disk blocks are cached, not entire files. In this way the disks used to store the data are unified and presented as a separate virtual block service to be used by file systems running on client workstations. The virtual block server runs on a separate machine and is accessed via a network. The simplicity of the block server is appealing and should in itself improve reliability. The main concern is efficiency and the goal of the project was to determine whether such a design can be made efficient enough to serve its purpose.

Development of a tool to test computer protocols

Myburgh, W. D 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc) -- Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Software testing tools simplify and automate the menial work associated with testing. Moreover, for complex concurrent software such as computer protocols, testing tools allow testing on an abstract level that is independent of specific implementations. Standard conformance testing methodologies and a number of testing tools are commercially available, but detailed descriptions of the implementation of such testing tools are not widely available. This thesis investigates the development of a tool for automated protocol testing in the ETH Oberon development environment. The need to develop a protocol testing tool that automates the execution of specified test cases was identified in collaboration with a local company that develops protocols in the programming language Oberon. Oberon is a strongly typed secure language that supports modularisation and promotes a readable programming style. The required tool should translate specified test cases into executable test code supported by a runtime environment. A test case consists of a sequence of input actions to which the software under test is expected to respond by executing observable output actions. A number of issues are considered of which the first is concerned with the representation of test case specifications. For this, a notation was used that is basically a subset of the test specification language TTCN-3 as standardised by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. The second issue is the format of executable test cases and a suitable runtime environment. A translator was developed that generates executable Oberon code from specified test cases. The compiled test code is supported by a runtime library, which is part of the tool. Due to the concurrent nature of a protocol environment, concurrent processes in the runtime environment are identified. Since ETH Oberon supports multitasking in a limited sense, test cases are executed as cooperating background tasks. The third issue is concerned with the interaction between an executing test case and a system under test. It is addressed by an implementation dependent interface that maps specified test interactions onto real interactions as required by the test context in which an implementation under test operates. A supporting protocol to access the service boundary of an implementation under test remotely and underlying protocol service providers are part of a test context. The ETH Oberon system provides a platform that simplifies the implementation of protocol test systems, due to its size and simple task mechanism. Operating system functionality considered as essential is pointed out in general terms since other systems could be used to support such testing tools. In conclusion, directions for future work are proposed.

The King, the Prince, and Shakespeare: Competing for Control of the Stuart Court Stage

Gabriel R Lonsberry (9039344) 29 June 2020 (has links)
<div>When, each holiday season, William Shakespeare’s newest plays were presented for King James I of England and his court, they shared the stage with propagandistic performances and ceremonies intended to glorify the monarch and legitimate his political ideals. Between 1608 and 1613, however, the King’s son, Prince Henry Frederick, sought to use the court stage to advance his own, oppositional ideology. By examining the entertainments through which James and Henry openly competed to control this crucial mythmaking mechanism, the present investigation recreates the increasingly unstable conditions surrounding and transforming each of Shakespeare’s last plays as they were first performed at court. I demonstrate that, once read in their original courtly contexts, these plays speak directly to each stage of that escalating rivalry and interrogate the power of ceremonial display, the relationship between fiction and statecraft, and the destabilization of monarchically imposed meaning, just as they would have then.<br></div>

Changing fictions of masculinity : adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, 1939-2009

Fanning, Sarah Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
The discursive and critical positions of the ‘classic’ nineteenth-century novel, particularly the woman’s novel, in the field of adaptation studies have been dominated by long-standing concerns about textual fidelity and the generic processes of the text-screen transfer. The sociocultural patterns of adaptation criticism have also been largely ensconced in representations of literary women on screen. Taking a decisive twist from tradition, this thesis traces the evolution of representations of masculinity in the malleable characters of Rochester and Heathcliff in film and television adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights between 1939 and 2009. Concepts of masculinity have been a neglected area of enquiry in studies of the ‘classic’ novel on screen. Adaptations of the Brontës’ novels, as well as the adapted novels of other ‘classic’ women authors such as Jane Austen, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, increasingly foreground male character in traditionally female-oriented narratives or narratives whose primary protagonist is female. This thesis brings together industrial histories, textual frames and sociocultural influences that form the wider contexts of the adaptations to demonstrate how male characterisation and different representations of masculinity are reformulated and foregrounded through three different adaptive histories of the narratives of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Through the contours of the film and television industries, the application of text and context analysis, and wider sociocultural considerations of each period an understanding of how Rochester and Heathcliff have been transmuted and centralised within the adaptive history of the Brontë novel.
