Previous issue date: 2017-03-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation discusses about how the differences arise and are negotiated in the obituaries
of a newspaper in Curitiba, PR. In order to do so, I am interested on the process of
biographies’ production and circulation, especially how they reflect on their own moral values
and group norms. The narratives that constitute these biographies depart from a game of
information between the family, the journalistic production and the announcement to the
public, which refer to notions of mourning, honor and tribute after death. The plots created
from these narratives reveal commons axis to these trajectories. However, they are not free of
tensioning as a result of disagreement possibilities, as well as the difference affirmation.
Therefore, the social markers of difference are not silenced in these obituaries. They may even
create discontinuities and new meanings for written biographies.
biografias escritas.

Using Funeral Listings and Newspaper Obituaries as Early Indicators of Excess MortalityArcher, Allen D 18 March 2021 (has links)
Abstract
Objectives: To identify a simple and effective means for public health professionals in rural communities to identify excess mortality using publicly available data.
Methods: Online data from four rural funeral homes, and obituary data from the most widely circulated newspaper in the same region were collected from January 2017 through December 2020. A three-year monthly average of death listings was created for 2017-2019 and compared, month-by-month with the amount of 2020 death listings.
Results: The four funeral homes reported a total of 3,957 deaths, and there were 7,623 newspaper obituaries published between January 2017 and December 2020. In the five-month period following the first COVID-19 death in the region on July 28, 2020, funeral home reports and newspaper obituaries reported a 20.2% and a 14.5% increase in deaths, respectively, for 2020 compared to the prior three-year average.
Conclusion: During the five months following the first death attributed to COVID-19, funeral home reports and newspaper obituaries both identified a significant increase in deaths over the monthly average death listings of the three years prior.
Policy Implications: Local public health officials may be able to use a multi-year, month-by-month summary of deaths, as reported by funeral homes and/or newspaper obituaries, to provide an “early indicator” of excess mortality in rural areas.

The Axiology of Necrologies: Using Natural Language Processing to Examine Values in ObituariesLevernier, Jacob 01 May 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is centrally concerned with exploring obituaries as repositories of values. Obituaries are a publicly-available natural language source that are variably written for members of communities that are wide (nation-level) and narrow (city-level, or at the level of specific groups therein). Because they are explicitly summative, limited in size, and written for consumption by a public audience, obituaries may be expected to express concisely the aspects of their subjects' lives that the authors (often family members living in the same communities) found most salient or worthy of featuring.
140,599 obituaries nested in 832 newspapers from across the USA were scraped with permission from *Legacy.com,* an obituaries publisher. Obituaries were coded for the age at death and gender (female/male) of the deceased using automated algorithms. For each publishing newspaper, county-level median income, educational achievement (operationalized as percent of the population with a Bachelor's degree or higher), and race and ethnicity were averaged across counties, weighting by population size.
A Neo4J graph database was constructed using WordNet and the University of South Florida Free Association Norms datasets. Each word in each obituary in the corpus was lemmatized. The shortest path through the WordNet graph from each lemma to 30 Schwartz value prototype words published by Bardi, Calogero, and Mullen (2008) was then recorded. From these path lengths, a new measure, "word-by-hop," was calculated for each Schwartz value to reflect the relative lexical distance between each obituary and that Schwartz value.
Of the Schwartz values, Power, Conformity, and Security were most indicated in the corpus, while Universalism, Hedonism, and Stimulation were least indicated. A series of nine two-level regression models suggested that, across Schwartz values, newspaper community accounted for the greatest amount of word-by-hop variability in the corpus. The best-fitting model indicated a small, negative effect of female status across Schwartz values. Unexpectedly, Hedonism and Conformity, which had conceptually opposite prototype words, were highly correlated, possibly indicating that obituary authors "compensate" for describing the deceased in a hedonistic way by concurrently emphasizing restraint. Future research could usefully further expand word-by-hop and incorporate individual-level covariates that match the newspaper-level covariates used here.

Previous issue date: 2007-07-05 / This dissertation is the study of longevity in the metropolitan area of São Paulo / Brazil, by the
analysis of the obituaries on Jornal da Tarde, a local paper. The 665 obituaries were analyzed
throughout the periods of June, July and August of 2004 and 2005.
The goal was to verify the longevity of the elderly residents of the metropolitan area of São
Paulo and the aspects contained in the obituaries like: age range of the elderly, marital status,
gender prevalence (feminine or masculine), if the elderly left their families and families left by
the elderly.
Utilized the SPSS (version11.0) to deal with statistics of data, because of the use of multiple
choice questions, through a questioner, elaborated from the obituary clippings.
The results obtained showed a greater range of age for the feminine gender, of 87,4 years of age
with the deviation standard of 8,6 years and, for the masculine gender of 82.1 years with
deviation standard of 9 years. In relation to the marital status a big majority of the elderly was
in the category of widows and the men in the category of being married/living together. In the
marital status without a partner (single, widow, separated/divorced), a bigger frequency of the
feminine gender was observed and with a partner (married/living together), a bigger frequency
of the masculine gender was noticed. Another significant association was encountered in
relation to the marital status, given that the obituaries of the elderly without partners
concentrated in the biggest age ranges and with partners in the smallest age ranges. It was not
encountered significant association with relation to the families left and type of family left.
The process to increase longevity in Brazil can be evidenced by obituaries of the elderly. The
longevity is a current phenomenon in the country and it is determined by the highest age
reached by the elderly. This process has major predominance in the female gender, being called
Houve ainda resultado significante
