A pilot study of a weight loss competition in the worksite

An eight-week weight-loss competition was conducted in an industrial worksite in Big Island, Virginia in the spring of 1993. Educational interventions were based on theories of self-efficacy and social support. Sixteen employees volunteered for the weight loss competition; fifteen completed the program. A single case study design was used to analyze the relationships among self-efficacy, intake of dietary fat, and weight loss as impact variables. Process variables deemed important for the program’s success were also examined for each individual. They included attendance at weekly weigh-ins, completion of daily food intake forms, attendance at weekly educational sessions, and completion of self-efficacy questionnaires. Results showed that women were more likely to participate in the program’s activities than men. Teams that worked together (within the same department) were more successful and more supportive of each other than teams composed of individuals from different departments. Individuals who participated in the educational sessions and competed in the assignments were more successful in losing weight. Due to the small number of participants, no significant effect was found between self-efficacy scores and weight loss. / Master of Science

Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar o nível de desconforto, através da Escala Visual Analógica (EVA), o Mapa de Segmentos Corporais de Corlett e Bishop (MSC) e o Questionário de Fadiga de Chalder (EFC) em operadores de telemarketing. A coleta de dados foi realizada uma vez por semana, ao longo de 2 meses de aplicação do programa de exercícios. A análise estatística sugere diminuição do crescimento do desconforto postural nos dois grupos, sendo mais acentuada no grupo experimental. Foi observada também diminuição significativa dos níveis de EVA e redução da freqüência e da prevalência de segmentos doloridos no MSC, ao se comparar dados da primeira e da última semana do estudo realizado. Quanto à fadiga também houve melhora em todas as variáveis do questionário de Chalder, indicando presença de efeitos significativos na diminuição dos níveis de fadiga. Assim, os programa de exercícios mostraram-se efetivos para diminuir o desconforto músculo-esquelético e a fadiga entre os operadores de telemarketing / The objective of this survey is to assess the telemarketing operators discomfort and mental and physical fatigue at the airway company call center before and after applying an exercise program. The experimental group has attended a 10 minutes exercise daily session and the control group a 10 minutes daily rest break. The exercise showed that is more effective than a rest break to prevent discomfort development and is important to repetitive strain injuries prevention because discomfort is one of the main predictors of this group of diseases

This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and factors associated with absenteeism due to sick leave for treatment of health of federal employees of a university hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2013, in an official medical expertise service, responsible for the care of the servers in the approval of sick leave. The population consisted of all hospital servers and the sample, the servers that were absent from work and attended the service expertise to deliver medical certificate to justify its shortcomings. Were presented the demographic and occupational characteristics of the population and calculated the prevalence of licenses by chapters of ICD-10, according to sex, the duration of episodes and the professional category. The Odds Ratios (OR) crude and adjusted by multivariate logistic regression analysis were calculated with confidence intervals of 95% (95%). The level of significance was set at 5% (α = 0.05). Of the 846 active employees, 223 (26.3%) were absent from work in 597 episodes license for health treatment (LTS), which resulted in 11,623 days of absence. The predominance of LTS was identified among women (88.3%), living with a partner (52.0%), high school (65.9%), in the positions of technicians and nursing assistants (71.3%) with capacity in inpatient units (39.0%) and service life> 10 years (54.7%). The overall prevalence of licenses for females was (30.6%) and males (12.9%), and the groups of diseases most prevalent mental and behavioral disorders (20.9%) and musculoskeletal diseases (16.8%). It was found that in the short-term leave, prevalent diseases of the musculoskeletal system (43.6%) and in the medium and long term, with mental disorders (26.7%) and (44.0%) respectively. As the number of licenses by groups of diseases, mental and behavioral disorders accounted for 177 (29.6%) episodes, which caused 5,688 (48.9%) days of absence and the musculoskeletal system diseases, 142 (23.8% ) LTS generated episodes of 1.340 days in the absence (11.5%). Multivariate analysis showed significant association between LTS and the female variables (OR 2.2; 95% CI 1.3 to 3.6), and professional technicians & nurses (OR 3.1; 95% CI 1 , 7 to 7.3). The overall prevalence of disease was (70.6%). The female and the professional nursing technicians category are associated with higher absence rates at work. The results provide important data on the illness s profile and enable the planning of actions to reduce absenteeism rates and improve the quality of working life. / A ausência dos profissionais de saúde ao trabalho é motivo de preocupação, pois exerce influência direta no trabalho dos profissionais de saúde e na qualidade da assistência prestada aos pacientes. Esta investigação objetivou caracterizar a prevalência e os fatores associados aos afastamentos por licenças médicas para tratamento de saúde dos servidores federais de um hospital universitário. Foi realizado um estudo transversal no ano de 2013, em um serviço de perícia médica oficial, responsável pelo atendimento aos servidores, na homologação de licenças médicas. A população foi composta por todos os servidores do hospital e a amostra, pelos servidores que se ausentaram do trabalho e compareceram ao serviço de perícia para entrega de atestado médico como justificativa das faltas. Foram apresentadas as características sociodemográficas e ocupacionais da população e calculadas a prevalência de licenças por capítulos da CID-10, segundo o sexo, o tempo de duração dos episódios e a categoria profissional. Foram calculados os Odds Ratios (OR) brutos e ajustados por análise de regressão logística multivariada, com os respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC 95%). O nível de significância foi estabelecido em 5% (α=0,05). Dos 846 servidores ativos, 223 (26,3%) se ausentaram do trabalho em 597 episódios de licença para tratamento de saúde (LTS), resultando em 11.623 dias de ausência. Foi identificado o predomínio de LTS entre mulheres (88,3%), que vivem com companheiro (52,0%), com Ensino Médio (65,9%), nos cargos de técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem (71,3%), com lotação em unidades de internação (39,0%) e com tempo de serviço > 10 anos (54,7%). A supremacia geral de licenças para o sexo feminino foi de 30,6% e para o masculino 12,9%, sendo os grupos de doenças mais prevalentes os transtornos mentais e comportamentais (20,9%) e as doenças osteomusculares (16,8%). Constatou-se que, nas licenças de curta duração, predominaram as doenças do sistema osteomuscular (43,6%) e, nas de média e longa duração, os transtornos mentais com 26,7% e 44,0%, respectivamente. Quanto ao número de licenças por grupos de doenças, os transtornos mentais e comportamentais representaram 177 (29,6%) episódios os quais causaram 5.688 (48,9%) dias de ausência e as doenças do sistema osteomuscular, 142 (23,8%) episódios de LTS, geraram 1.340 dias de ausência (11,5%). A análise multivariada demonstrou associação significante entre LTS e as variáveis sexo feminino (OR 2,2; 95% IC 1,3-3,6) e categorias profissionais técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem (OR 3,1; 95% IC 1,7-7,3). A prevalência geral de adoecimento foi de 70,6%. O gênero feminino e a categoria profissional técnicos em enfermagem estão associados a maiores índices de ausência no trabalho. Os resultados trazem dados importantes sobre o perfil do adoecimento e possibilitam o planejamento de ações para redução dos índices de absenteísmo e melhoria da qualidade de vida no trabalho.

The status of and the impact of leadership on worksite health promotion activities in the public school corporations of Indiana / Health promotion

The purpose of this study was to determine the status of health promotion activities provided by Indiana public school corporations for their employees and the impact of corporation leadership on the provision of these activities. The subjects of this study were Indiana public school superintendents. All 291 superintendents were mailed the survey instrument created by the researcher for this study and there were 227 (78%) responses.The results showed that 54% of the responding Indiana school corporations provided some type of health promotion activity for employees on a corporation-wide basis. The primary reason school corporations provided health promotion activities for employees was to keep employees healthy. The major impediment in providing health promotion activities for employees was a lack of resources. School corporations in rural settings were less likely to provide health promotion activities for employees. School corporations were more likely to provide health promotion activities for employees as the number of full-time employees increased. This study also found a relationship between the importance a superintendent placed on providing health promotion activities for employees and the provision of those activities in a school corporation. As worksites, Indiana public school corporations have not met the national goals and objectives for worksites found in Healthy People 2010. / Department of Educational Leadership

Employee perceptions towards outsourcing of HIV/AIDS services

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the employee perceptions towards outsourcing of HIV/AIDS services in a retail working environment. Thirty participants were included using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire assessed attitudinal disposition through questions aimed testing knowledge, preferences and environmental factors influencing perception towards alternative HTC service centres. Results show employees have positive perceptions towards the utilisation of external HTC and welfare services compared to those offered on-site. On-site employer initiated HTC services through mobile testing facilities are perceived as failing to offer privacy, anonymity and security of continued employment as testing outside the employer’s premises would provide. Outsourced services such as public hospitals or clinics are seen to offer better testing environment because of their natural health settings and non-association with the employer whose motives for providing testing services in the workplace are held in suspicion. Ninety four per cent of the employees expressed desire to have HTC services provided in the workplace. Potential utilisation level of such services dropped to 33% among these employees with 50% indicating a desire to use external health services providers. This disparity is explained by the negative environmental and social factors prevailing in the workplace which make access to HTC difficult. Recommendations for improving employee attitudes towards on-site HTC services include implementing educational programs to reduce peer stigma, scepticism to employer motives for initiating health intervention programs and demonstrating fair employment practices which do not associate HIV status with different treatment in the workplace. There is also a need for companies to plan around facilitating employee use of public health facilities even when they have on-site services to promote a perception of holistic care towards employees. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nie beskikbaar.

Capacidade para o trabalho e envelhecimento funcional: fatores de influência em docentes da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná / Work ability and functional aging: influence factors in professors of the Federal University of Technology Parana

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de analisar a capacidade para o trabalho e o envelhecimento funcional nos docentes da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR). Para atingir a finalidade principal, propôs-se: i) caracterizar o perfil e as percepções dos professores da instituição em termos pessoais, laborais, de estilo de vida e de saúde; ii) determinar o índice de capacidade para o trabalho dos pesquisados, com a utilização do Índice de Capacidade para o Trabalho (ICT); iii) investigar as variáveis capazes de atuar, positiva e negativamente, na capacidade dos servidores. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com 361 (13,1%) profissionais de ensino lotados nos treze campi e na reitoria. Estruturada no formato de artigos encadeados, esta dissertação foi composta pelos elementos pré e pós-textuais tradicionais e, complementarmente, por três artigos no desenvolvimento, o primeiro teórico-conceitual e os demais aplicados. A revisão de literatura, do tipo integrativa, permitiu ao pesquisador a construção de uma base teórica acerca do tema, a identificação dos instrumentos mais utilizados para mensurar a aptidão funcional, assim como os fatores de maior influência nessa condição. No segundo artigo, a capacidade funcional desses profissionais foi mensurada e relacionada com as características individuais e particularidades do ambiente institucional. Encontrou-se que 69,5% dos professores tiveram seu índice considerado como bom ou ótimo, onde se tem como medidas, respectivamente, o apoio e a manutenção da capacidade para o trabalho. As médias do ICT entre as diferentes faixas etárias não apresentaram diferenças expressivas e nem demonstraram redução constante entre os professores dos grupos de idades distintas. Nesta etapa, pôde-se concluir que aspectos como o turno de trabalho, negativamente, além da satisfação e os relacionamentos com colegas, chefias e alunos, positivamente, são determinantes na capacidade para o trabalho dos professores pesquisados. A identificação dos fatores associados significativamente com a capacidade funcional dos professores da UTFPR, resultou no terceiro artigo desta dissertação. A partir de testes estatísticos, constatou-se que variáveis como o sexo, cuidar de pessoa idosa, a prática de atividades físicas, a qualidade do sono, o índice de massa corporal, apresentar doença mental ou física, responsabilidade pela principal renda da família, trabalhar à noite, a exigência do trabalho e a satisfação com ele, influenciam na aptidão funcional dos docentes investigados. Conclui-se que este estudo dissertativo oferece subsídio para as partes interessadas na promoção da capacidade funcional da população ativa, uma vez que o tema tem ocupado lugar de destaque nas agendas de gestão de governos e organizações. Traz também novas perspectivas para os trabalhadores a respeito da importância de manter uma vida saudável e com qualidade diante desse novo desafio global. / This work was developed with the objective of analyzing the work ability and functional aging in professors of the Federal University of Technology – Parana (UTFPR). To achieve the main purpose, it was proposed: i) identify the profile and perceptions of the institution's professors in personal, employment, lifestyle and health terms; ii) determine the work capacity of those surveyed, using the Work Ability Index (WAI); and iii) to investigate the variables able to act positively and negatively on the ability of in this public servers. This is a cross-sectional study with 361 (13.1%) bonded teaching professionals in thirteen campi and rectory. Structured in thesis of publications form, this work was composed of the traditional pre and post-textual elements, and, in addition, for three articles in the development, the theoretical-conceptual first and the others applied. The literature review, of the integrative type, allowed the researcher to build a theoretical basis about the subject, the identification of the instruments used to measure the functional capacity, as well as the most influential factors in this condition. In the second article, the work ability of these professionals was measured and related to the individual characteristics and peculiarities of the institutional environment. It was found that 69.5% of professors had their index considered good or excellent, where it has the measures, respectively, the support and maintenance of the labor capacity. The means of the WAI among the different age groups showed no significant differences nor demonstrated steady reduction among professors of distinct age brackets. At this stage, it can be concluded that aspects such as the work shift, negatively, beyond the satisfaction and relationships with colleagues, managers and students, positively, they are crucial in the work ability of the professors surveyed. The identification of the factors significantly associated with functional capacity of UTFPR professors resulted in the third article in this dissertation. From statistical tests, it was found that variables such as the professor's genre, taking care of elderly, the physical activities, the sleep quality, body mass index, present mental or physical illness, responsibility for the main income of the family, work night, the requirement of work and the satisfaction with it, influence the functional capacity of the investigated professors. In conclusion, this dissertative study offers benefits for stakeholders in promoting the functional capacity of the workforce, since the theme has occupied prominent place in the management agendas of governments and organizations. It also brings new perspectives to the workers about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and quality on this new global challenge.

The objective of my thesis "Occupational diseases in medical personnel and their most common causes" explores the detriments of health that result from theoretical risk in the medical working environment. These health detriments not only severely impact personal health but also cause economical troubles due to diminished work capabilities. Occupational health services have improved as a consequence of this impact. Instead of this term, the expression "work healthcare" is now more commonly used. Its main goal is improvement of labour conditions as well as support of employees health. The occurrence of occupational diseases reflects the level of healthcare services available for employees. The National Institute of Public Health in Prague, in conjunction with The Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic, aim to operate within this framework to address the issue of work healthcare. The objective of the thesis is to examine the occurrence of occupational diseases in the Czech Republic as well as in the South Bohemia region within a specific time period. Expressed in focused literature, there are two hypotheses related to occupational healthcare: H1 "The occurrence of occupational diseases has a declining trend" and H2 "The most common occupational disease in health care in the South Bohemia region is scabies for the years 2002, 2012 and 2013". A secondary analysis of data shows the occurrence of occupational diseases, which reflects the employees' level of healthcare. The National register of occupational diseases is available on the official web site of The National Institute of Public Health in Prague, where single year data is available for further examination. Further data is provided by The Centre of occupational Health at The National Institute of Public Health in Prague. A point of discussion is "monitoring knowledgeability of employees in public healthcare regarding prevention against occupational diseases". Another issue is "the instruction of the medical workforce about prevention against occupational diseases". The focus group is the medical workforce of The Hospital of Czech Budweis, a.s. and The Hospital of T. Bati, a.s. in Zlín. The featured questionnaire research had twenty questions, with twelve focused on knowledge of prevention that minimised contraction of associated diseases. The research has discovered that the occupational diseases in the health and social care field has a declining trend. The largest percentage of the population that has had scabies occurred in 2002. 139 cases were reported which was 53% of all occupational diseases that year. Scabies occurred in 72 cases in the year 2012, which was 55% of all occupational diseases in that year. In South Moravia, there were 44 cases of occupational diseases in 2002, but only 6 in the year 2012. The statistics of 2012 imply a significant decline. In 2002, the region of Ústí and Labem had the greatest number of occupational diseases cases 42 cases. But no case of occupational disease was found in 2002 in the region of Olomouc and in 2012 in the region of Zlín. This statistical data proves the hypothesis of a declining trend. The most significant occurrence of occupational diseases was found in the nurse population of the South Bohemia region. The most common occupational disease was scabies. Nine cases were recorded which accounted for 30% of all occupational diseases in 2002, 2012 and 2013 in the South Bohemia region. The most occupational diseases were found in 2002 17 cases. 2012 showed a decline of only 3 cases. In 2013, the occurrence of occupational diseases increased to 10 cases compared to 2012. The hypothesis was statistically confirmed. The thesis could be used as a informative document for teaching occupational hygiene and also as document of reference for healthcare personnel to study common workplace diseases. This thesis can assist in prevention of occupational diseases, in particular infectious diseases.
