Effects of parental expectation and filial piety on career development of university students in Shanghai / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Fu mu qi wang yu xiao dao guan nian dui Shanghai da xue sheng zhi ye sheng ya fa zhan de ying xiang.January 2013 (has links)
In recent years, the vagaries of global economy and rapid social transformation bring great challenges to university students. Graduates’ difficulty in employment has becoming one of the hottest issues in China. The difficulty of career decision-making and low level of career commitment emerging as two urgent employment problems, call for attention on the development of career adaptability. However, little research has identified key culture-related factors influencing such problems. Based on career developmental theory (Super, 1957, 1969, 1980, 1984, 1990), this study aimed to investigate how parental expectation and filial piety, the core familial values of Asian culture, have impact on university students’ career adaptability, career decision-making difficulties and career choice commitment. Participants included 877 undergraduates from 18 universities and colleges in Shanghai (age{U+2090}{U+0076}{U+0065}{U+0072}{U+0061}{U+0067}{U+0065} = 21, N{U+006d}{U+0061}{U+006c}{U+0065} = 341, N{U+0066}{U+0065}{U+006d}{U+0061}{U+0069}{U+0065} = 536). They completed Living-up to Parental Expectation Inventory, Career-related Filial Piety Scale, Career Adapt-Ability Inventory, Emotional and Personality-related Career decision-making Difficulties, and Commitment to Career Choice Scale. The data empirically supported hypothesized model that perceived parental expectation and filial piety influence career decision-making difficulty and career commitment through career adaptability very well. The results also revealed double-effect of perceived parental expectation and filial piety, as well as the significant mediating effect of the latter on career development. The theoretical and practical implication of Chinese career guidance was discussed. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2013 nian 5 yue". / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 175-199). / Electronic reproduction.
While striving for excellence in an increasingly market-dominated, multicultural, multilingual,
service-oriented, and globalised society, language practitioners – translators, text editors,
interpreters, audio describers, sign language interpreters and subtitlers – in South Africa and
Flanders find themselves under increasing pressure to defend the professional status of their
work, and to justify the conception of their different occupations as a homogenous
profession. Given the cultural and mediatory role of the language practitioner in this
decentralised, dynamic, complex, and virtual market, the professionalization of language
practitioners is rapidly developing into a matter that needs urgent academic consideration.
Scientific and multidisciplinary research on the occupations collectively and colloquially
referred to as the “language professions”, or more academic, language practice, is therefore
currently of the utmost importance and relevance to ensure market-related expert language
services. Unquestionably, without such research language practice cannot become a bona
fide profession.
From the point of view of the sociology of professions, language practitioners are an extreme
example of an understudied professional occupation (Sela-Sheffy & Schlesinger, 2011). By
focusing attention on the marginal status of the language occupations (which persists despite
the ever-increasing need for professionalized expert language services in a globalised
multilingual and multicultural world), this research project aims to identify the perceived
impediments to desired professional status for language practice, thereby creating a more
systematic basis for future professionalization endeavour.
The sociological literature on the professions as manifest in the functional, interactional and
conflict approaches of Émile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Karl Marx, as well as a critical, postmodern
approach offers a body of history and theory of the development of modern
professions and their attributes. The service ideal; a viable income congruous with expert
status; occupational autonomy and monopoly; career oriented training and continuing
education; professional training institutions; professional bodies; ethics, and jurisdiction (see
for example Abbott, 1988; Barber, 1963; Freidson, 1983, 1994; Goode, 1969; Hughes, 1963;
Larson, 1977; Macdonald, 1995; Torstendahl & Burrage, 1990; Wilensky, 1964) are
attributes unique to the “true profession”.
These characteristics served as the matrix to establish a framework for the prototypical
profession whereby the current professional status of language practitioners in South Africa
and Flanders could be ascertained, and a formal language practice “professional project”
initiated.
Using the “professional project” (Larson, 1977) as a conceptual tool advantageously
establishes the concrete, historically bounded character of the professions as empirical entities (Witz, 1992:64) within the context of three different approaches to categorisation as
described in this project: the classical model, the critical model, and the prototype model.
The identification of perceived obstacles to the professionalization of language practice as
per the literature provided the context for a comparative appraisal of the current professional
state of affairs of language practitioners in South Africa and Flanders. An objective
investigation into the character of these obstacles revealed the catalyst opportunities
inherent in the alleged barriers to professionalization. This perspective provides a rational
framework for the implementation of essential measures to augment a viable professional
project of language practitioners in general. / Thesis (PhD (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

(Contre)pouvoirs urbains ? : a critique of the urban planning non-institutional apparatus influencing the transformations of the Parisian northeastGatta, Federica 09 December 2014 (has links)
In which way is urbanism confronting both the evolution taking place in contemporary urban movements and the simultaneous growth of political rhetoric concerning sustainable, participatory development? The present thesis stems from the observation of an ongoing process of institutionalization, begun in the seventies, of social movements and critical theories that emphasize the role and importance of city residents in the construction of their city. This process is analyzed through an ethnography conducted in the Parisian northeastern metropolitan area, thus situating it in an illustrative context of significant recent transformation. The challenge of this work is in studying a number of situations in which actors who are generally considered separately, interact: organizations involved in the development of communal urban participation, groups actively occupying abandoned urban spaces, the technicians and decision-makers of large-scale renovation projects, collectives of artists and architects advocating urban art and participation. Through an analysis of the explanations and (mis)understandings these actors use and reach while discussing projects in progress, what appears is a specific form of control of social counter-powers. This process is framed by apparatus attributing value to the idea of uncertainty in the urban imagination, asserting the “inhabitant” as an ambiguous subject-object of urban transformation, conceiving the intermittent progression of events and temporalities as a new paradigm of urban planning. What follows from this analysis is a questioning into where libertarian self-governance and urban neoliberalism converge, and into the evolving relationship between technical and critical urbanism.

Psychological resilience: the role of unconscious and conscious coping strategies in the mediation of stress in high risk occupational contextsAlexander, Debra Geraldine January 2002 (has links)
This study investigates the role of unconscious and conscious coping strategies in the mediation of stress in high risk occupational contexts. The Social Readjustment Rating Scale, the Multidimensional Coping Inventory and the Defense Style Questionnaires were completed by 194 police, ambulance and teaching personnel. A sample of 37 teachers served as a non high risk occupation control group. Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, analysis of variance, analysis of difference and principal component analysis were performed on the data. Results indicated minimal significant between group differences. Within group variances were yielded. A minor relationship between levels of stress and usage of positive and negative mechanisms was observed. The significance of these findings is discussed and recommendations made for further study.
