A Mixed-Methods Investigation of a Rape Crisis Line Volunteer Counselling Program

Louw, Alyssa January 2017 (has links)
Rape crisis counsellors play a central role in frontline service delivery to sexual violence (SV) survivors, yet their training has received scarce research attention. To fill this gap, this dissertation presents three studies that sequentially examine a volunteer-based rape crisis line (CL) training program. The first study is an evaluability assessment (EA) that assesses the readiness of a community CL training program for research; the second study quantitatively examines the outcomes of the CL training program; and the third study qualitatively investigates the rape crisis counsellors’ training and practice experiences. Data was gathered from a local Rape Crisis Centre (RCC), and a total of 52 women participated in the research. Two-way mixed factorial ANOVAs were used to analyze the quantitative data, and a general inductive approach (Thomas, 2006), informed by a feminist, empowerment perspective (Nagy Hesse-Biber & Yaiser, 2004) was used to analyze the qualitative data. The EA demonstrated that the CL training program was primarily intended to develop volunteers’ basic counselling skills, suicide intervention skills, and feminist attitudes and beliefs. Based on analyses of the EA data, the program was determined to be evaluable. The second study indicated that following the training, the volunteers’ counselling self-efficacy improved, whereas their suicide intervention skills did not change. Volunteers had strong pre-existing feminist attitudes and beliefs that also did not change. The third study revealed several themes that elucidated the program’s processes and outcomes, such as the volunteers’ perception that after the training they gained basic counselling skills, and an increased knowledge of feminism, yet felt unprepared to respond to suicidal callers. Due to their routine interactions with SV survivors and systems, the volunteers also began to perceive SV as a widespread, systemic problem. A thematic analysis of results across studies, and implications of the findings on anti- violence practice and policy are discussed.

Online Training Impact on Adjunct Faculty Compliance and Satisfaction With Professional Development

Pete, Elizabeth 01 January 2016 (has links)
The problem addressed by this project study was low levels of adjunct faculty compliance and satisfaction with the professional development program at a local college. The purpose of the study was to determine if an alternative delivery method would yield higher levels of compliance and satisfaction than would a traditional professional development workshop. The guiding research question was whether an alternative delivery method would yield higher levels of compliance and satisfaction than a traditional professional development workshop. The theoretical base included andragogy, self-directed learning, and connectivism. Using an experimental design, the project examined archival data concerning compliance and satisfaction for 69 adjunct faculty members who had been randomly assigned to an online (experimental group; n = 39) or on-campus (control group; n = 30) professional development workshop. A chi-square analysis showed that compliance levels were significantly higher for participants in the online professional development workshop compared to those who participated in an on-campus workshop. An analysis of variance found that the overall satisfaction level was higher for participants in the online workshop compared to those who participated in the on-campus workshop. The project resulting from the study was a policy recommendation report. Online professional development can positively influence social change by increasing adjunct faculty participation and facilitating the creation and maintenance of networks of health educators. Additionally, direct and indirect costs currently associated with traditional professional development may be reduced through the use of online professional development.

Arouca, Fernando Augusto Bergamaschi 17 March 2006 (has links)
E-Learning is a concept that involves using computer and multimedia resources to help a community or a group of people learn something. People learn by executing lessons in computer, called as on-line training too. The participant can count with many kinds of content, as: interactive simulations, videos, presentations, collaborative tools and others. According to e-Learning concept, the participants could have their performance evaluated by tests or professionals. The objective of the present study is to identify and analysis the differences between traditional live learning and e-Learning, by comparing both using performance indicators and evaluating the benefits of each other. To achieve the proposed objective, it was made a case study in a multinational enterprise where many people were trained by two learning strategies: pure traditional live and blend e-Learning training. Then the results were analyzed. This study still offers a method to implement an e-Learning training system, developed according to conceptual and practice analysis.

The project aims at considering this interdisciplinary construction process that encompasses the dimensions of knowing, doing and being, through the dialogic report between the knowledge coming from the researcher's experience on school management and the knowledge about school management founded on the complex thinking view. It is a research-action-training, in which the inquiry incorporates to the training practice e articulates both not exclusive poles: theory and practice. Culturally, the school manager has difficulty articulating the democratic process, because they feel isolated in the management activity due to the linear view that fragments the reality in order to make it comprehensible and dominated. Under such conditions, the power relations remain hierarchized and the bureaucratic aspects prevail over a more sistemic view, in which the school dynamics is understood as a living and self-organized system, a culture in continuous construction, nourished by the interpersonal and group work relations. However, it is important to have a sight of the school's organization complexity in order to deal with the paradoxes noticed in a daily basis, which is predictable and at the same time unstable and uncertain. The complexity includes the dialogic game of the linearity and the systemic. The manager's training not always offers the conditions for this knowledge construction, since it needs to be contextualized and identified as a historical process. This is the focus of the interdisciplinary attitude in terms of on line managers' training, when it seeks capturing each manager's singular view face to the course proposals and the school reality. The interpretative analysis of the narratives' content of three managers' logbooks revealed the educator-manager's helpful and guiding action in each situation, as well as the perception of each manager in training when faced with the challenge of mobilize their teams for group action.
