This thesis presents a research about the relations that are established between the speech and the patrimonialism, from the pretensive journalism that is done on politics in the Internet. The study space focuses on the countryside of Brazil and Portugal, trying to approach the concepts of regional journalism and proximity as a means of mediatizing daily life that is not a priority of the great media, and which seeks ways of survival next to the era of smartphones with contentes more and more post-mass-media and personalized. With the objective of distinguishing which discourses on politics are produced and reproduced in / for sites that claim to be journalistic, because they seek credibility with the public, this study also seeks to relate them to patrimonialism in order to understand the production of meanings and the possible social practices that are established alongside mechanisms of political domination, on the one hand, and the possibility of emancipation, on the other. Methodologically, E-clipping was chosen as an instrument of data collection and discourse analysis as an analytical method as procedures of this qualitative research, exploratory and interpretive, from the perspectives of the Critical Theory added to the Social Construction of the Reality around the State, of the democracy and online journalism. It was possible to observe, finally, that in Brazil there is a principle of inheritance in the patrimonialist relations of the Portuguese State, but that it is unlikely that this heritage has endured in other instances of society until the present day, including in the political journalistic discourse that Is done on the Internet. The priorities and importance that occur at the time of production and propagation are distinct, as the culture of the users at the time of reception, circulation and interactivity are also considerably reconfigured.

It selects as its scope the exercise of docent work in virtuality and the knowledge that the communication by means of a computer net demands on the professor in his effective exercise. Under the title Online education: computers mediated communication in the teaching practice, seeks to understand what the socioeconomic environment constituent of contemporaneous time has specifically, and how such specifity expresses itself in the teaching practices. The general target of this research is to understand this new socio technical means, identifying its specificities and discussing its implications in the teaching practices. The specific targets are: to characterize the process of communication by means of a net of computers, discussing its potential in the educational field; to describe how the exercise of online teaching occurs and to interpret the collected data in the empiric field. For the understanding of the multiple relations, which constitute the education phenomena in computerized nets, it makes use of the concept of informational society, of Castells, as a background to understand the contemporaneous socio technical environment, and its communicational logics. It also relies on Pierre Lévy for the understanding of social relations brought about in the social fabric, permeated by information and communication technologies also present in the teaching and learning processes. When reporting to the first three decades of online education, it recalls the theoretical contributions and practices of the researchers and educators who have become pioneers of online education. The investigation employs the qualitative broaching of ethnographic study case as a methodological option, by means of participation procedures, observation, interpretative description and production of the studied case report, a course given totally online, the empiric field work as well as the analysis and interpretation of the collected data converge to the conclusion that the communication by computer net, breaking the space time barriers and allowing the non linear, hypertext, multimedia and multidirectional communication opens new possibilities, and also, triggers implications in the relations with knowledge, making evident the necessity to take into account, in the exercise of online teaching, the twofold mediation process: pedagogical and technological. Such possibilities and implications become more evident when the use of the most recent digital technologies seek base in other knowledge areas, noticing currently a variety of proposals set on different conceptions about education and online teaching, a field of theoretical and practical investigation still on the buildup / A presente investigação foi desenvolvida no âmbito do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Faculdade de Educação da Universidade Federal de Goiás e faz parte da linha de pesquisa Formação e Profissionalização Docente, que busca estudar as relações do trabalho docente com as tecnologias de informação e comunicação bem como as implicações epistemológicas, culturais, pedagógicas e institucionais destas relações.

Exploring self concept and social identities in the context of online intimate relationships

Van Staden, Phillip January 2010 (has links)
Many South Africans are developing online relationships. Due to the anonymous and artificial context of the online environment it is possible that a person’s identity differs within the on- and offline environment. Sternberg’s (1986) Triangular Model of Love as well as Rogers’ Self Theory (1951) were utilized as a theoretical base for investigating online identity and intimacy. Using a qualitative, exploratory design, the study explored this phenomenon by analysing open ended questionnaires administered online to people in intimate online relationships. Participants were selected by means of non-probability snowball sampling. The findings indicated that Internet socialisers vary in their experience of their online identities. Individuals may have a multitude of genuine online selves, each one represented differently depending on the anonymity and level of intimacy in the relationship. Selfdisclosure and deception play an important role in identity representation and exploration and both are experienced as being affected by the online context.

The expansion of trademark functions with particular reference to online keywords advertising : the European experience

Rabab'A, Moh'd Ghazi January 2016 (has links)
The primary purpose of a trademark is to facilitate the communication of information between consumers and producers about their products and services to those who wish or need to buy them. The consumer needs to be able to depend on the message the mark conveys to ensure they are purchasing what will fulfil their requirements. In the modern market place, the choice appears endless, and indeed the principles of free trade espoused by the European treaties has heightened the opportunities for cross-national traders to sell their goods, and increased the options available to consumers. When this occurs, so does the availability of information which a purchaser may find the need to seek through to ascertain what he or she wants in an complex and often confusing exercise in differentiation. It is therefore in the interests of producers and customers that those who manufacture goods or provide services develop a mark which identifies their wares and helps provide feedback measured by success; consequently an exchange of information. Consumers are able to make their preferences known via choice, or otherwise, of the mark. Modern business methods and the vast array of marketing opportunities are not only placing the role and function of the trademark at the forefront of consumer protection, but also developing the concept of the mark as an asset of considerable value in itself. This increases its vulnerability to competitive interference and the proposition that it should receive enhanced protection in law. Somewhat perversely, it has resulted in a body of legislation and jurisprudence which lacks cogency and coherence. The purpose of this thesis, accordingly, is to examine the causes thereof by evaluating the current European trademarks protection system to ascertain the contribution they actually make to promotion of free competition and the movement of goods or services upon which that substantial market is predicated. It will examine the impact of the development of protection granted to the trademark with particular reference to the use of online keywords advertising service and focus on the effect of relatively new theories of what functions qualify to be shielded from harm from competitive others. This has expanded beyond the conventional boundaries of source ‘origin’ protection, espoused to primarily protect consumers from confusion in their choice making process. Advertising and investment functions as separate principle are recognised by the Court of Justice of the European Union, but do not appear to qualify for safeguarding in the context of the competitive free market. In fact, it will be shown that giving excessive shelter from harm to all functions which may affect the value of the trademark will limit, even jeopardise, third party competitor and consumer issues. It will inhibit the use of the e-commerce online keywords advertising service which assists third parties to promote alternative competing goods or services and so reduce consumer choice by restriction of online information. It is suggested that proper, clear defences must be guaranteed under the law so third parties may gauge their actions to avoid infringement of trademark owner rights whilst promoting their own products, and accordingly strike the necessary balance between the different competing interests of trademark owners, third parties competitors, and consumers.

An investigation into integrating social sites as a teaching and learning practice to create dialogue spaces in the language classroom

Olamijulo, Christianah January 2012 (has links)
This study intends to explore how social media or social networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook can facilitate communication channels or create dialogue spaces in a language class. Social media is a form of participatory media, which broadly refers to the “collection of communication channels or mediums (primarily online and mobile) through which social networks originate and are sustained” (Flew 2008:109). Although the term social media is often used as a collective term for SNSs or as the core trademark of Web 2.0, Flew (2008:17) also distinguishes social media by calling it a “communications infrastructure” that allows for “participation, interactivity, collaborative learning and social networking”. Flew (2008) identifies various online sites including the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia and the online user-generated video site YouTube as well as various personalised web space sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Friendster and Bebo as participatory media. The study’s data collection was situated at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and investigated how social media can be used to facilitate dialogue between a tutor and BKI1120 Communication in English B students in a Higher Education (HE) context using qualitative methodology. This study compared the use of existing and more traditional or conventional classroom communication practices with those of SNSs as a communication channel, while focusing on social media application as a communication tool to create dialogue spaces that support teaching and learning practices. The research also attempted to identify alternative applications of social media for teaching and learning practices to inform researchers in the fields of HE and media. In the first data-collection phase, BKI1120 Communication in English B Public Management students were selected as the sample for the study. Seventeen students participated in the BKI1120 Facebook page created for the purpose of this study. In the second data-collection phase, a taped focus-group interview was conducted with eight BKI1120 Communication in English B students. The interview transcript was then analysed qualitatively for themes. The research findings showed that social media or SNSs such as Facebook can facilitate communication channels or create dialogue spaces in a language class, if it is managed effectively.

Robert Pattison as the object of desire: an investigation into the representation of the Twilight saga in online media

Martin, Shelley-Ann January 2011 (has links)
This study aimed to provide researchers in the development of media studies with research into understanding the star as the object of desire in a contemporary context, using Robert Pattinson as the star and The Twilight Saga, which made him famous, as an example of the effects that the use of social and online media have on audiences in terms of their perception and identification of a particular star. This study drew from literature and theories such as stardom, star as the object of desire, audience theory, fantasy, desire and escapism as well as theory on globalisation, the mass media and online and social media. Whilst social and online media have been in existence for a number of years, there is little research that has been performed in order to determine whether or not the use of social and online media directly affect users’ understanding and perception of certain stars and films. There has also been little research performed in order to gain an understanding of fantasy and desire, in terms of films and film stars, outside the constraints of the cinema. This study examined this notion, noting that The Twilight Saga has been successful production worldwide, in order to discover whether or not the use of social and online media perpetuates obsession in the fans and audience members. The first part of the study that was conducted, applied certain theories discussed and developed in the literature review, to Robert Pattinson and The Twilight Saga in order to obtain a better understanding of the star and the film series in terms of cinema, stardom, fantasy and escapism and online and social media. A comparative case study of six online articles, from prominent online sources featuring Pattinson, was then conducted in order to investigate Pattinson’s image and status in the online community. Finally, a content analysis of various online and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube was performed in order to find out what type of information and imagery was being generated about Pattinson and the Saga as well as to investigate how fans and followers engaged with the different media channels and what kinds of comments they were making about the star and the Saga. It was found that Pattinson, the character he plays in the film series, Edward Cullen, and The Twilight Saga have a large presence on key social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, with a vast amount of followers and fans; Facebook and Twitter being the most popular and interactive media avenues. It was also found that Pattinson, Edward and The Twilight Saga, through the avid use of the social media tools, elicited and incited signs of obsession, fantasy and desire within an extensive amount of fans and followers, outside the constraints of the cinema

The Relationship Between Movement Imagery and Online Control in Typically Developing Children

Sooley, Marcus January 2016 (has links)
The ability to mentally represent actions is suggested to have a role in the online control of movement in healthy adults. Children’s movement imagery ability and online control have been shown to develop at similar non-linear rates. The current study investigated the relationship between movement imagery and online control in children by comparing implicit and explicit movement imagery measures with the ability to make online trajectory corrections. Imagery ability was a significant predictor of children’s online control of reaching once age and general reaching efficiency were controlled for. These findings extend the proposed relationship between movement imagery and online control.

An on-line computer assisted mass spectrometer

Mitchell, David Laurie January 1971 (has links)
An analog data acquisition system incorporating an Interdata Model 4 digital computer has been designed and built for a mass spectrometer. This system has been conceived with the primary objectives of improving analytical precision and production. Automated mass spectrometer operation allows for the collection of larger quantities of data while decreasing operator involvement and consequently diminishing operator bias and fatigue. The analog signal from the mass spectrometer measuring system is digitized using a digital voltmeter and transmitted, via an interface, to the processor where the digital information is manipulated in accordance with a computer program. An additional facility is provided whereby digital data from the processor can be displayed, if desired, on a 5 decade numerical readout situated at the mass spectrometer console. Hardware is also available in the interface to provide control of the magnetic field scan rate. A function control switch at the mass spectrometer console allows the operator to convey a variety of predetermined instructions to the computer at any time during the course of a run. Thus, the system provides for on-line (real time) data processing of mass spectra as well as limited computer control over the mass spectrometer. This thesis is primarily concerned with the design and construction of the logic hardware for this system together with a demonstration of its operating ability. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Obchodně ekonomické srovnání on-line a tradičního sázení / Commercial and economic comparison of traditional and online gambling

Rafajlovič, Konštantín January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to compare two forms of gambling: traditional and online. Gambling is characterized by the involvement of the government because of specific aspects of gambling. These include economic gain for the state's treasury, possible negative social impacts or money laundering. According to these aspects, the paper compares the legislation and economic specifics of both forms of gambling, but also focuses on e-commerce and how gambling went online.
