Die Neißeprovinz als Kleingau?Zschieschang, Christian 24 September 2015 (has links) (PDF)
A Small Slavonic Region called Nice? A reply to Walter Wenzel´s paper about “The provincia Nice”. – The present essay on the early-medieval settlement areas at the River Neiße/Nysa Łużycka in Lower Lusatia, deals with the issue of the provincia Nice, a name which appears among the toponyms of the region and has been the subject of a joined study together with Ernst Eichler. The only written evidence documenting Nice is the chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg. Its localization is unknown, and all attempts to localize it remained as yet unconvincing. The proposition of the aforementioned study is, that this name may be referring to the only known settlement area at the lower Neiße river which went by the name Selpuli, thus assuming that Nice was effectively a quasi- synonym for Selpuli. Walter Wenzel contradicted this and localized Nice in a smaller area around the present-day town of Forst. For his reconstruction he used place names, archaeological findings and personal names. In this article all of his arguments are revisited (parts 2–4) and, as a result it is found, that not all of them can be accounted for as indicative of an early medieval settlement. Therefore Wenzel’s theory yields no evidence which would invalidate the proposition that Nice geographically coincides with Selpuli. Finally (parts 5 and 6) this assumption is discussed in the context of settlement geography, including a short analysis about the use of the terms pagus and provincia in Thietmars chronicle.

Anthroponymic Neology: what does Germanic names have to tell us?Rodrigues, Letícia Santos 27 June 2019 (has links)
Researches in Onomastics - linguistic science dedicated to the study of proper names (particularly in this case, in Anthroponymy, the study of anthroponyms) - can reveal several aspects about a certain people or culture. Considering this, this work focuses on the analysis, from a specific scope, of the Brazilian anthroponymic system referring to the last decade of the nineteenth century, the entire twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century, in order to understand the performance and importance of anthroponyms. To make it possible, this research bases itself on the contributions of Etymology and Morphology, as well as on the theoretical study of Cognitive Linguistics. Specifically, the analysis turns to the neological anthroponyms that use Germanic formatives in their constructions, due to the historical factor of the occupation of the Iberian Peninsula by the considered \"Germanic peoples\" influenced on the anthroponimic Brazilian system, as we still see it today. The corpus analyzed refers to the archives of the Ordem Terceira do Carmo, located in the Centro Histórico of the city of Salvador / BA. These archives are constituted by 10 volumes of the Livro dos Termos dos Irmãos of which we will analyze the last four by the historical period. The presence of neological anthroponyms was verified by the criterion of absence in some of the main Portuguese-language onomastic dictionaries: Dicionário etimológico da língua portuguesa - Tomo II, by Antenor Nascentes (1952), Dicionário etimológico de nomes e sobrenomes, by Mansur Guérios (1981), and Dicionário onomástico etimológico da língua portuguesa, by José Pedro Machado (2003), and also the Bible (because the biblical names have a traditional character). Among the results found, it is possible to observe the clear relationship between the increase of neological names and the abolition of slavery and the withdrawal of the civil registry from the hands of the Catholic Church, since such events offer some freedom for those individuals who could only choose names traditional traditions, often closely related to the Christian tradition, besides the increase of th trend to create neological names for individuals, so that, how the years progress, the number of occurrences raised. Among the results, the recurrent use of bitematic compositional structures is also observed, as well as the one that is believed to have been inherited from the German anthroponyms, demonstrating, in fact, the influence of such a morpholexical model.

Uchibidolo : the abundant herds : a descriptive study of the Sanga-Nguni cattle of the Zulu people, with special reference to colour-pattern terminology and naming-practice.Oosthuizen, Marguerite Poland. January 1996 (has links)
Sanga-Nguni cattle have been present in Southern Africa for more than seven hundred years. They are the cattle traditionally owned by the Zulu people and have always been of great cultural and economic significance. They are distinguished by their hardiness and adaptability and are characterised by the great variety of their colours and patterns. This dissertation is a study of Sanga-Nguni cattle with special reference to colour pattern terminology and naming-practice in Zulu. More than three hundred terms in Zulu denote colour-pattern, horn-shape and type of beast. There are also a great number of terms for animals used for ritual purposes, especially those connected with the practice of ukulobola, in which cattle are exchanged during marriage negotiations. Many of these names, particularly those which refer to colour-pattern, are richly
metaphorical, using imagery and analogy which connect the cattle with the birds, animals and plants that share their environment. Both archival and field sources have been employed to document as many of these names as possible and to classify them according to cultural significance, type, colour-pattern configuration and metaphorical content. Cattle names cannot be appreciated in isolation and in order to understand the complexity of the Zulu terminology, the significance of cattle in the cultural and economic life of the Zulu people as well as their biology and history has also been described. 'Cattle lore' concerning beliefs about cattle and
perceptions of them in the cosmology of the Zulu people are recorded. The role of cattle in the oral tradition and cattle imagery in proverbs, poetry and tales as well as the praises of cattle themselves, have been explored in overview and provide insight into how the Zulu people perceive their herds. The dissertation is divided into four sections: i) Research setting ii) Pastoralism in Zulu society
iii) Colour-pattern terminology and related naming-practice
iv) perceptions of cattle and the role of cattle in the oral tradition. Although this is a primarily a language study, the subject of which is the documenting and analysis of the vast range of cattle terms found in Zulu, it is also a study of the role of cattle in Zulu society and their significance in the thought patterns of the people who own them and with whom they have lived in such close contact for so many centuries. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1996.
