The use of this device compensates the dispersion in a range of frequencies not covered by conventional dispersion compensating fibers and, simultaneously, amplifies the signal in order to reach longer transmission distances. In particular, dispersion compensation and amplification is demonstrated in the O Band (1260 nm up to 1360 nm) for systems operating at 10 and 40 Gbps. For this purpose, the parameters of a real microstructured optical fiber model are used in the VPI TransmissionMaker numerical simulation software through which is possible to evaluate the performance of the device. The performance evaluation is carried out through Bit Error Rate (BER) as a function of link distance and transmission channel wavelength.

Oliveira, Rafael Euzebio Pereira de 13 May 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:38:17Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Rafael Euzebio Pereira de Oliveira.pdf: 3969043 bytes, checksum: cfa66f3e9f3a18e9e86b364cd01a2c0a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-05-13 / In this dissertation the transmission properties of photonic crystal fibers are assessed under the influence of pressure and temperature for sensing applications. A review is given of the light propagation in conventional optical fibers and the effects of pressure and temperature on the refractive index of silica are studied. Photonic crystals in 1 and 2 dimensions are also studied. Then, microstructured fibers and photonic crystal fibers are addressed and their guidance properties and general applications are shown. A review is made of temperature and pressure sensors based on conventional fibers, Bragg gratings and microstructured and photonic crystal fibers described in the literature. Finally, results are shown and discussed of the experiments with the application of pressure on a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, for which high-order bandgaps, in the visible spectral region, were identified and characterized for the first time. These bandgaps are shown to be pressure sensitive. Applying external hydrostatic pressure over the fiber, optical transmission variations of a few dB were observed for pressures of hundreds of kgf/cm², while when the fiber holes were internally pressurized a similar variation was achieved for units of kgf/cm². The response of light polarization, and hence of the fiber birefringence, to internal pressure was also analyzed.. In the other part of the experimental work, the temperature-induced bandgap spectral shift of photonic bandgap fibers was characterized. The response of a hollow-core fiber, a hybrid fiber and an all-solid fiber was characterized with bandgap shifts of up to 36 pm/°C in straight fibers. For the all-solid fiber the influence of bending over the bandgaps was characterized, as well as temperature-induced bandgaps shifts under these conditions. For a straight fiber, a simple model for the bandgap shift calculation is presented and showed good agreement with the experimental results. Closing the work, the conclusions are presented.

This dissertation presents the fabrication of long-period fiber gratings through electric arc discharges and their application in current sensing in unmanned aerial vehicles. The theoretical aspects of long-period gratings are presented. Besides, we discussed the different types of coupling that could occur in a long-period fiber grating, as well as the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the gratings produced by electric arc discharges. The manufacture process of the long-period gratings using the electric arc technique was described and the behavior of the polarization dependent loss of these gratings was investigated. In addition, a new method for the production of long period gratings with reduced polarization dependent loss is introduced. It has been found that by changing the incidence angle of the electric discharges in the optical fiber in relation to a reference point, it is possible to average the effects induced by each electric arc discharge and, therefore, reducing the intrinsic polarization dependent loss of these gratings. Finally, the application of a grating produced by electric arc combined with a neodymium permanent magnet is presented. This combination allows us to measure the electric current required by a motor of an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Louot, Christophe 07 February 2018 (has links)
Coherent Raman microspectroscopy (CARS) is an optical method used to identify molecular bonds in a sample in order to analyze and determine its complete composition. It requires the simultaneous excitation of the sample by two waves (the pump wave and the Stokes wave) in order to induce resonant vibration of the bond to be detected. For multiple bonds analysis (broadband coherent Raman microspectroscopy our Multiplex-CARS), the monochromatic Stokes wave must be replaced by a broadband beam (supercontinuum). The aim of this thesis was to design supercontinuum sources optimized for Multiplex-CARS application, in particular in terms of spectral bandwidth and spectral power density. Supercontinuum generation was investigated in three different optical fibers: (i) a microstructured single mode fiber with a large Yb doped core in which the input beam was re-amplified all along its propagation; (ii) a conventional singlemode fiber pumped in the normal dispersion regime in which spectral broadening was achieved by means of Raman gain saturation; (iii) a conventional graded-index multimode fiber in which the beam spectrally broadened by Raman gain saturation at very high power also experienced spatial self-cleaning by Kerr effect, resulting in a high brillance output beam with an,intensity profile close to that of the fundamental mode. A complete spectrotemporal study is achieved for each of these three sources.

Sources impulsionnelles picosecondes tout optique à très haut débit : applications aux télécommunications optiques / Ultra-high repetition all optical picosecond pulsed sources : applications in optical telecommunications

El Mansouri, Ibrahim 19 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the work carried out on the realization of fibered 40-GHz picosecond optical pulse sources in the telecommunications C-band. In the first part, we present a numerical and experimental study of the generation of 40-GHz pulse trains thanks to the nonlinear compression of an initial beat-signal by multiple Four-Wave Mixing process. Enhanced temporal stability is achieved by generating the sinusoidal beating thanks to a Mach-Zehnder modulator driven at its zero-transmission working point. In order to improve the quality of the generated pulses, we also demonstrate the suppression of stimulated Brillouin back-scattering by inserting several optical isolators into the compression line. In the next part, we present the generation of low duty-cycle pulse trains by using a nonlinear compressor line based on 4 segments of fiber. The generated pulse trains have been encoded and then multiplexed to achieve a high bit rate signal (160 Gb/s). In the last part, we present the technology transfer steps of this optical source, such as creating a prototype of the source, prior art search and market research.

Roles of dopants, interstitial O2 and temperature in the effects of irradiation on silica-based optical fibers / Rôle des dopants, O2 interstitiel et de la température dans les effets de l'irradiation sur les fibres optiques à base de silice

Di Francesca, Diego 05 February 2015 (has links)
In this Thesis work we have investigated the effect of ionizing irradiation (X and γ rays) up to 1 Grad on different types of multimode optical fibers (P-doped, P-Ce-doped , Ge-doped, Ge-F-doped, Ge-Ce-doped, and N-doped). The experiments were carried out by three main experimental techniques: online Radiation Induced Attenuation (RIA), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Confocal Micro-Luminescence (CML). In the first part of the Thesis work we report on the radiation response of several types of optical fibers. The absorption due to radiation induced P-related defects was studied by RIA in the UV-Visible domain. Moreover, by EPR measurements we were able to detect POHC, P1 and P2 defects. In particular, for the detection of P1 and P2 defects we have validated the use of EPR second-harmonic detection mode which allowed us to obtain the growth kinetics of P1 and P2 with the dose. The effects due to the variation of the drawing conditions of the fibers were investigated as well as the ones due to the change of the temperature of irradiation (from 25 to 280 °C). Finally, concerning the P-doped OFs, we report on the effects due to the Cerium codoping of the core of the optical fiber. We observed a reduced generation of POHC and P2 centers under irradiation. However, EPR investigation has shown that the generation of P1 defects is essentially unaffected by the Ce-codoping. Regarding Ge-doped optical fibers we report on three basic typologies: Ge-doped, Ge-F-doped and Ge-Ce-doped. For each fiber typology we investigated three drawing conditions. The radiation responses of these fibers were characterized by RIA and EPR measurements. Furthermore, performing CML measurements we were able to obtain further insight on the role of the co-dopants and of the defect precursors in determining the radiation induced defects. We have also investigated the radiation response of N-doped OFs (three drawing conditions). The radiation responses in the UV-Visible domains were obtained by RIA, and by EPR measurements we were able to detect the signals of two N-related defects at high radiation doses. Finally, CML measurements on irradiated samples have shown three emission bands in the visible domain which are tentatively assigned to N-related centers. In the second part of the Thesis we report on the effects of an O2 loading treatment produces on some of the investigated samples. By micro-Raman measurements we demonstrate that a high pressure high temperature treatment can incorporate high quantity of O2 into Pure-Silica-Core (PSC), F, Ge and P doped optical fibers. The radiation responses of some of the O2-loaded optical fibers were investigated with particular regard to the fluorine doped and pure-silica-core optical fibers. On the basis of literature data we performed band decompositions of the RIA spectra as a function of the dose. Moreover, the EPR study of the O2 loaded P-doped optical fiber have shown a strong reduction of the signals associated to the P1 and P2 defects as compared to the untreated fibers. In this part of the thesis we also report on the characterization of the near infrared radioluminescence (1272 nm) of O2 molecules embedded in the optical fiber matrix and the feasibility of a radiation sensor based on this phenomenon for environments characterized by high radiation doses and high dose-rates
