The main objective of this thesis was to investigate how it is possible to extend the master curveapproach to complex components, in order to calculate annealing conditions and giving a life timeprediction according those annealing conditions. We studied the stability of a simple Bragg grating (noapodisation, constant pitch, no tilt). Then, we have been able to study the problem of the stability(according to specific criteria) of complex components: CDC and GFF monofilters. This thesis allowed toshow precisely what is the VAREPA framework and how to apply it to optical telecommunicationsproblems. To give an answer to the question of the possibility of extending the master curve approach tocomplex components, series of accelerate aging studies have been carried out. For this purpose, ameasurement protocol including the determination of the measurement uncertainty was developed. Thisprotocol allow, to determine confidence intervals on the life time prediction. We studied the kinetics of photo induced index growth in the optical fiber dedicated forfabrication of CDC (Coreactive). This study allowed us to demonstrate that the predominant reaction atthe origin of changes in refractive index is activated by a one photon absorption. On the other hand wehave extended the VEREPA framework used to predict the Bragg gratings erasure to take into account thegrowing kinetics. In a second step we tried to calculate annealing conditions in the presence of residualmolecular hydrogen and associated Bragg grating life time prediction. For that purpose we established themaster curve of photo-induced Bragg gratings without annealing, then we validated the annealingconditions and lifetime predictions by building a new master curve from aging of annealed Bragg gratings(in presence of residual hydrogen). We studied the thermal stability of hydrogenated fiber Bragg gratings dedicated to futuremonofiltres GFF in similar conditions to those components. We used master curves from basic Bragggratings (ie no apodisation, constant pitch, no tilt) simply out-gazed at "cold" temperature (here 2 days at50 ° C and 2 days at 110 ° C). Then the aging of the index profile of a GFF monofilter have beensimulated (index profile of the core and of the cladding, each of them having a different master curve). For that purpose the profile have been separated into 35 "basic" filters. Then the spectral response of thisaged monofilter (e.g. 30 days at 200°C) have been calculated and compared with experimentalmeasurements. The advantage of this approach is that it is general and allow to change the annealingconditions if needed. Firstly, this study allowed to highlight that the stability of photo-induced indexchanges in the core depend little on the initial amplitude modulation for values between several 10-5 and10-3. Secondly, due to the presence of a highly sensitive optical cladding (and therefore highly Ge doped),Master curves, of photo-induced index change in the core and the cladding have been established forvalues ranging up to 10-3 in the core and 3.10-3 in the cladding. Master Curves with the same k0 havebeen obtained but the elbow and the slopes are different. Stability of index variations in the core is better(less Ge doped) than in the photosensitive cladding. In a second step, from the basic Bragg gratings, theannealing conditions and the lifetime have been determined. For the first time to our knowledge, thereliably of the annealing conditions and the life time predictions have been validated by building a newmaster curve on annealed GFF monofilters. According to the theory, this master curve show the same k0as the one determined using non-annealed gratings. More beyond the elbow, the two curves are same, which validates the reliability of our predictions.

Polarization mode excitation in index-tailored optical fibers by acoustic long period gratings / Anregung von Polarisationsmoden in optischen Fasern mit angepasstem Brechzahlprofil durch langperiodische akustische GitterZeh, Christoph 15 November 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The present work deals with the development and application of an acoustic long-period fiber grating (LPG) in conjunction with a special optical fiber (SF). The acoustic LPG converts selected optical modes of the SF. Some of these modes are characterized by complex, yet cylindrically symmetric polarization and intensity patterns. Therefore, they are the guided variant of so called cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). CVBs find applications in numerous fields of fundamental and applied optics. Here, an application to high-resolution light microscopy is demonstrated. The field distribution in the tight microscope focus is controlled by the LPG, which in turn creates the necessary polarization and intensity distribution for the microscope illumination. A gold nanoparticle of 30 nm diameter is used to probe the focal field with sub-wavelength resolution.
The construction and test of the acoustic LPG are discussed in detail. A key component is the piezoelectric transducer that excites flexural acoustic waves in the SF, which are the origin of an optical mode conversion. A mode conversion efficiency of 85% was realized at 785 nm optical wavelength. The efficiency is, at present, mainly limited by the spectral positions and widths of the transducer’s acoustic resonances.
The SF used with the LPG separates the propagation constants of the second-order polarization modes, so they can be individually excited and are less sensitive to distortions than in standard weakly-guiding fibers. The influence of geometrical parameters of the fiber core on the propagation constant separation and on the mode fields is studied numerically using the multiple multipole method. From the simulations, a simple mode coupling scheme is developed that provides a qualitative understanding of the experimental results achieved with the LPG. The refractive index profile of the fiber core was originally developed by Ramachandran et al. However, an important step of the present work is to reduce the SF’s core size to counteract the the appearance of higher-order modes at shorter wavelengths which would otherwise spoil the mode purity.
Using the acoustic LPG in combination with the SF produces a versatile device to generate CVBs and other phase structures beams. This fiber-optical method offers beam profiles of high quality and achieves good directional stability of the emitted beam. Moreover, the device design is simple and can be realized at low cost. Future developments of the acoustic LPG will aim at applications to fiber-optical sensors and optical near-field microscopy.

Self-assembled rolled-up devices: towards on-chip sensor technologiesSmith, Elliot John 13 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
By implementing the rolled-up microfabrication method based on strain engineering, several systems are investigated within the contents of this thesis. The structural morphing of planar geometries into three-dimensional structures opens up many doors for the creation of unique material configurations and devices. An exploration into several novel microsystems, encompassing various scientific subjects, is made and methods for on-chip integration of these devices are presented.
The roll-up of a metal and oxide allows for a cylindrical hollow-core structure with a cladding layer composed of a multilayer stack, plasmonic metamaterial. This structure can be used as a platform for a number of optical metamaterial devices. By guiding light radially through this structure, a theoretical investigation into the system makeup of a rolled-up hyperlens, is given. Using the same design, but rather propagating light parallel to the cylinder, a novel device known as a metamaterial optical fiber is defined. This fiber allows light to be guided classically and plasmonically within a single device. These fibers are developed experimentally and are integrated into preexisting on-chip structures and characterized.
A system known as lab-in-a-tube is introduced. The idea of lab-in-a-tube combines various rolled-up components into a single all-encompassing biosensor that can be used to detect and monitor single bio-organisms. The first device specifically tailored to this system is developed, flexible split-wall microtube resonator sensors. A method for the capturing of embryonic mouse cells into on-chip optical resonators is introduced. The sensor can optically detect, via photoluminescence, living cells confined within the resonator through the compression and expansion of a nanogap built within its walls.
The rolled-up fabrication method is not limited to the well-investigated systems based on the roll-up from semiconductor material or from a photoresist layer. A new approach, relying on the delamination of polymers, is presented. This offers never-before-realized microscale structures and configurations. This includes novel magnetic configurations and flexible fluidic sensors which can be designed for on-chip and roving detector applications.

[en] FIBER MONITORING TECHNIQUE WITH SUB-CARRIER BASEBAND TONE SWEEP / [pt] FIBRAS ÓPTICAS POR VARREDURA DE TOM NA SUB-PORTADORA DE BANDA BASERENATA GOLDMAN LEIBEL 20 June 2018 (has links)
[en] With ever growing demand for higher capacity in data transmission, a solution has been proposed for analog Radio over Fiber transmission, combining several data channels over the optical carrier in the access network using Sub-Carrier Multiplexing (SCM). Furthermore, this access network is often branched in the form of a passive optical network (PON). Monitoring such fiber links is thus increasingly important. Current optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technology used for monitoring operates at a separate optical wavelength and has wide bandwidth detection, making it relatively costly. The pursuit of a low cost, high precision monitoring alternative is of paramount importance for cost effective quality of service (QoS) improvement. In this work employment of SCM for data multiplexing is exploited embedding a low frequency tone sweep monitoring technique into data transmission. A mathematical model for the frequency response of the link was derived and the fault location and intensity is estimated through comparison with acquired amplitude and phase of the backscattered light for the varying frequency by applying a simple least mean squared (LMS) algorithm. The modeling suggested requires that measurement of the link prior to the occurrence of a fault is known. A single new fault can then be accurately detected and its position and intensity estimated in the way described.

Optical WDM Systems for Multi-point Distribution of Hybrid Signals in Phased Array Radar ApplicationsMeena, D January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Photonics and Optical techniques have advanced recently by a great extend to play an important role in Microwave and Radar applications. Antenna array of modern active phased array radars consist of multiple low power transmit and receive mod- ules. This demands distribution of the various Local Oscillator(LO) signals for up conversion of transmit signals and down conversion of receive signals during various modes of operation of a radar system. Additionally, these receivers require control and clock signals which are digital and low frequency analog, for the synchronization between receive modules.
This is normally achieved through RF cables with complex distribution networks which add significantly higher additional weight to the arrays. During radar operations, radio frequency (RF) transmit signal needs to be distributed through the same modules which will in turn get distributed to all antenna elements of the array using RF cables. This makes the system bulky and these large number of cables are prone to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and need additional shielding. Therefore it is very desirable to distribute a combination of these RF, analog and digital signals using a distribution network that is less complex, light in weight and immune to EMI.
Advancements in Optical and Microwave photonics area have enabled carrying of higher datarate signals on a single fiber due to its higher bandwidth capability including RF signals. This is achieved by employing Wavelength Division Multi- plexing (WDM) that combine high speed channels at different wavelengths. This work proposes, characterizes and evaluates an optical Wavelength Division Multiplexed(WDM) distribution network that will overcome the above mentioned problems in a phased array radar application. The work carries out a feasibility analysis supported with experimental measurements of various physical parameters like am- plitude, delay, frequency and phase variation for various radar waveforms over WDM links.
Different configurations of optical distribution network are analyzed for multipoint distribution of both digital and RF signals. These network configurations are modeled and evaluated against various parameters that include power level, loss, cost and component count. A configuration which optimizes these parameters based on the application requirements is investigated. Considerable attention is paid to choose a configuration which does not provide excess loss, which is economically viable, compact and can be realized with minimum component count.
After analysing the link configuration, multiplexing density of the WDM link is considered. In this work, since the number of signals to be distributed in radar systems are small, a coarse WDM(CWDM) scheme is considered for evaluation. A comparative study is also performed between coarse and dense WDM (DWDM) links for selection of a suitable multiplexing scheme. These configurations are modeled and evaluated with power budgeting. Even though CWDM scheme does not permit the utilisation of the available bandwidth to the fullest extent, these links have the advantage of having less hardware complexity and easiness of implementation.
As the application requires signal distribution to thousands of transmit-receive modules, amplifiers are necessary to compensate for the reduction of signal level due to the high splitting ratio. Introduction of commonly available optical amplifiers like Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA), affect the CWDM channel output powers adversely due to their non-flat gain spectrum. Unlike DWDM systems, the channel separation of CWDM systems are much larger causing significantly high channel gain differences at the EDFA output. So an analysis is carried out for the selection of a suitable wavelength for CWDM channels to minimize the EDFA output power variation. If the gain difference is still significant, separate techniques needs to be implemented to flatten the output power at the antenna end. A CWDM configuration using C-band and L-band EDFAs is proposed and is supported with a feasibility analysis.
As a part of evaluation of these links for radar applications, a mathematical model of the WDM link is developed by considering both the RF and digital sig- nals. A generic CWDM system consisting of transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, multiplexers/ demultiplexers and detectors are considered for the modeling. For RF signal transmission, the transmitters with external modulators are considered. Mod- eling is done based on a bottom-top approach where individual component models are initially modeled as a function of input current/power and later cascaded to obtain the link model. These models are then extended to obtain the wavelength dependent model ( spectral response) of the hybrid signal distribution link
Further mathematical analysis of the developed link model revealed its variable separable nature in terms of the input power and wavelength. This led to significant reduction in the link equation complexity and development of some approximation techniques to easily represent the link behavior. The reduced form of the link spectral model was very essential as the initially developed wavelength model had a lot
of parametric dependency on the component models. This mathematical reduction
process led to simplification of the spectral model into a product of two independent
functions, the input current and wavelength. It is also noticed that the total link
power within specific wavelength range can be obtained by the integrating these
functions over a specific link input power.
After the mathematical modelling, an experimental prototype physical link is
set up and characterized using various radar signals like continuous wave (CW) RF,
pulsed RF, non linear frequency modulated signal (NLFM) etc. Additionally a proof
of concept Radio-Over-Fiber (RoF) link is established to prove the superior transmission
of microwave signal through an optical link. The analysis is supported with
measurements on amplitude, delay, frequency and phase variations. The NLFM
waveforms transmissions are further analysed using a matched _ltering process to
confirm the side lobe requirement. Further a prototype WDM link is built to study
the performance when digitally modulated channels are also multiplexed into the
link. The link is again validated for signal levels, delay, frequency and phase parameters.
Since amplitude and delay are deterministic, it is proposed that these parameter variations can be compensated by using suitable components either in the electrical or the optical domain.
Radar systems use low frequency digital signals of different duty-cycles for synchronization and control across various transmit-receive modules. In the proposed
link, these digital signals also modulate a WDM channel and hence the link is called
a hybrid system. As the proposed link has EDFA to compensate for the splitting
losses, there are chances of transient effects at the EDFA output for these low bitrate channels. Owing to the long carrier lifetime, low bitrate digital channels are prone
to EDFA transient effects under specific signal and pump power conditions. Additionally, the synchronization signals used in radar application vary the duty-cycle
over time, which is found to introduce variations in transient output. This practical challenge is further studied and the thesis for the first time, includes an analysis of EDFA transient e_ects for variable duty-cycle pulsed signals. The analysis is carried out for various parameters like bitrate, input power, pump power and duty-cycle.
Investigations on EDFA transients on variable duty-cycle signals help in proposing
a viable method to predict the lower duty-cycle transients from higher duty-cycle
transients. The predicted transients were again validated against simulated transients
and experimental results. As these transient effects are not desirable for radar
signals, we propose a novel transient suppression techniques in optical and electrical domain which are validated with simulation and experimental measures.
One suppression technique tries to avoid transient effect by keeping the optical input to EDFA always constant by feeding an inverted version of the original pulse into the EDFA along with the actual pulse. It is observed that as the wavelength of the
inverted pulse is closer to the original input pulse, the transient effect settles faster.
These EDFA transients are evaluated with WDM link configurations, where both
high and low bitrate signals are co-propagated.
Another challenging aspect of the link operation is the non-at gain spectrum
of EDFA. i.e., EDFA provides unequal power level for various signals at WDM
link output. This is especially true in the case of local oscillator signals, where
it is preferable to have the same amplitude signals before feeding it to the mixer
stages. But in the radar applications, this will require additional hardware circuits
to equalize the signal level within a phased array antenna. This work also proposes
some of the power equalization methods that can be used along with the WDM links.
This part of the work is also supported with simulation model and experimental
results.
The analytical and experimental study of this thesis aids the evaluation process
of a suitable optical Wavelength Division Multiplexed(WDM) distribution network
that can be used for the distribution of both RF and digital signals. The optical
WDM links being superior with its light weight, less loss and EMI/ EMC immunity
provides a better solution to future class of radars.

Modeling future all-optical networks without buffering capabilitiesDe Vega Rodrigo, Miguel 27 October 2008 (has links)
In this thesis we provide a model for a bufferless optical burst switching (OBS) and an optical packet switching (OPS) network. The thesis is divided in three parts.

In the first part we introduce the basic functionality and structure of OBS and OPS networks. We identify the blocking probability as the main performance parameter of interest.

In the second part we study the statistical properties of the traffic that will likely run through these networks. We use for this purpose a set of traffic traces obtained from the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya. Our conclusion is that traffic entering the optical domain in future OBS/OPS networks will be long-range dependent (LRD).

In the third part we present the model for bufferless OBS/OPS networks. This model takes into account the results from the second part of the thesis concerning the LRD nature of traffic. It also takes into account specific issues concerning the functionality of a typical bufferless packet-switching network. The resulting model presents scalability problems, so we propose an approximative method to compute the blocking probability from it. We empirically evaluate the accuracy of this method, as well as its scalability.

Radiation hardening of rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers / Durcissement aux radiations d'amplificateurs à fibres optiques dopés aux terres raresVivona, Marilena 04 July 2013 (has links)
These devices operating at 1.5 µm are conceived for space applications and contextually the evaluation of their performance in such harsh environment becomes of crucial importance. Two treatments, the H2-loading and the Ce-doping of the fiber core, are investigated as radiation hardening solutions. A spectroscopic study has been associated, in order to improve the knowledge of the physical mechanisms responsible for the signal degradation and the action of the hardening solutions. The thesis is organized in three parts. Part I deals with a general description of the Rare-Earth (RE)-doped fibers, with the introduction of some basic concepts of the RE-ion physics and their interaction with the host matrix material (phosphosilicate glass). The state-of-art of the radiation effects on the optical fibers, particularly the RE- doped fibers, is also overviewed. Part II describes the samples (fiber fabrication, geometry and chemical compositions), and the used experimental techniques, including a short discussion on the related theoretical background. Part III describes the main results; firstly, the active tests, performed on the RE-doped fiber as part of an optical amplifier, demonstrate that the Ce-codoping and H2-load have a key-role in the limitation of the radiation induced losses. Then, the spectroscopic analysis of the phosphosilicate glass (Raman study) and of the RE-ions (stationary and time-resolved luminescence) show a stabilization effect due to the two treatments, leading to a preservation of the high efficiency of the physical system under study
