Components based on optical fibers with internal electrodes

Myrén, Niklas January 2003 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is development ofdevices fortelecom applications based on poled optical fibers. The focusis on two different specific functions, wavelength conversionand optical switching. Optical switching is demonstrated in a poled optical fiberat telecom wavelengths (~1.55 mm). The fiber has two holesrunning along the core in which electrodes are inserted. Thefiber device is made electro-optically active with a polingprocess in which a strong electric field is recorded in thefiber at a temperature of 270 o C. The fiber is then put in onearm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and by applying a voltageacross the two electrodes in the fiber the refractive index ismodulated and the optical signal switched from one output portto the other. So far the lowest switching voltage achieved is~1600 V which is too high for a commercial device, but byoptimizing the design of the fiber and the poling process aswitching voltage as low as 50 V is aimed for. A method to deposit a thin silver electrode inside the holesof an optical fiber is also demonstrated. A new way of creatingperiodic electrodes by periodically ablating the silver filmelectrode inside the holes of an optical fiber is also shown. The periodic electrodes can be used to create a quasi-phasematched (QPM) nonlinearity in the fiber which is useful forincreasing the efficiency of a nonlinear process such aswavelength conversion. Poling of a fiber with silver electrodesshowed a huge increase in the nonlinearity. This could be dueto a resonant enhancement caused by silver nanoclusters. Keywords:Poling, twinhole fiber, fiber electrodes, silver film electrodes, silver diffusion, quasi-phase matching, optical switching, frequency conversion, optical modulation / NR 20140805

Fundamental studies of the interaction between femtosecond laser and patterned monolayer plasmonic nanostructures

Huang, Wenyu 09 July 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on the interaction between femtosecond laser and patterned two-dimensional gold nanostructures. The sample was prepared by two different lithographic techniques, the nanosphere lithography and the electron beam lithography. Characterization was carried out with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to answer a number of fundamental questions regarding the laser-nanostructure interaction. Under a low density irradiation of a femtosecond laser, we examined the effect of the lattice crystallinity on the electron-phonon relaxation in monolayer periodic array nanoparticles prepared with nanosphere lithography. We found that the electron-phonon relaxation rate was faster in polycrystalline nanoparticles and decreases greatly in single crystalline nanospheres, which is explained by the presence of high density grain boundaries. The ultrafast laser-induced coherent phonon oscillations in patterned gold nanoparticles are also fully characterized. We studied the effect of size, shape, thickness, monitoring wavelength, and materials of the prismatic array nanoparticles on the period of their coherent phonon oscillations. In a gold nanodisk pair system, we found that the fractional change in the vibration frequency increases exponentially with decreasing the ratio of the interparticle separation to the particle diameter, which is explained by the coupling of the induced electric field in one nanodisk by the strong surface plasmon field of its pair partner. Based on the coherent phonon oscillation of gold caps on a polystyrene sphere monolayer array, a new all-optical gigahertz modulation technique is developed. Under a high density irradiation of a femtosecond laser, the melting and ablation processes can be induced in gold nanoparticles. We studied femtosecond laser induced shape and localized surface plasmon resonance band changes of gold prismatic array nanoparticles. We also observed that the femtosecond laser irradiation of the nanoprisms at the surface plasmon resonance absorption maximum can cause them to detach from the substrate and 'fly away'. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy measurements revealed that the displaced nanoparticles are thinner and smaller than the undisplaced ones, which supports an atomic ablation mechanism.

Exploring Optical Devices for Neuromorphic Applications

Rhim, Seon-Young 30 April 2024 (has links)
Elektrochrome Materialien in Wellenleitern ermöglichen optoelektronische Modulation. / In recent years, electronic-based artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been dominant in computer engineering. However, as tasks grow complex, conventional electronic architectures reach their limits. Optical approaches therefore offer solutions through analog calculations using materials controlling optical signals for synaptic plasticity. This study explores photo- and electrochromic materials for synaptic functions in ANNs. The switching behavior of the molecule diarylethene (DAE) affecting Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) is studied in the Kretschmann configuration. Optical pulse sequences enable synaptic plasticity like long-term potentiation and depression. DAE modulation and information transfer at distinct wavelengths allow simultaneous read and write processes, demonstrating non-volatile information storage in plasmonic waveguides. DAE integration into Y-branch waveguides forms full-optical neural 2x1 networks. Synaptic functions, reflected in DAE switching, can be thus applied in waveguide transmission. Network training for logic gates is achieved using gradient descent method to adapt AND or OR gate functions based on the learning set. Electrochromic materials in waveguides enable optoelectronic modulation. Combining gel-like polymer electrolyte PS-PMMA-PS:[EMIM][TFSI] with PEDOT:PSS allows electrical modulation, demonstrating binary complementary control of transmissions and optical multiplexing in Y-branch waveguides. The solid polymer electrolyte PEG:NaOtf enables optical signal modulation for neuromorphic computing, thereby facilitating the adaptation of linear classification in Y-branch waveguides without the need for additional storage or processing units.

Comparison of Segmented and Traveling-Wave Electro-Optical Transmitters Based on Silicon Photonics Mach-Zehnder Modulators

Giuglea, Alexandru, Belfiore, Guido, Khafaji, Mahdi, Henker, Ronny, Petousi, Despoina, Winzer, Georg, Zimmermann, Lars, Ellinger, Frank 17 September 2019 (has links)
This paper presents a brief study of the two most commonly used topologies - segmented and traveling-wave - for realizing monolithically integrated electro-optical transmitters consisting of Si-photonics Mach-Zehnder modulators and their electrical drivers. To this end, two new transmitters employing high swing breakdown voltage doubler drivers were designed in the aforementioned topologies and compared with regard to their extinction ratio and DC power consumption at the data rate of 30 Gb/s. It is shown that for the targeted data rate and extinction ratio, a considerably lower power consumption can be achieved with the traveling-wave topology than with its segmented counterpart. The transmitters were realized in a 250 nm SiGe BiCMOS electronic-photonic integrated technology.
