The characterization of SiO2-PEG hybrid materials prepared with sol-gel method and their applications to alcohol purification

Wu, Cheng-Hsien 03 August 2012 (has links)
Abstract This thesis conducts a comprehensive investigation of the of the physical chemistry related to the TEOS-based porous materials prepared by so-gel approach and develops the fast qualification technology for the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of sol-gel process. The porous materials were prepared by introducing a polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG) into sol-gel after different aging times and with different drying and annealing processes. The effects of pH and addition of PEG on sol-gel derived SiO2 powders for purification of ethanol are studied. The methods and results of this work provide valuable reference for the development of other functional materials such as low k dielectric materials. In the first part, the long-term behavior of the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of the tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) pre-solution at different pH values with and without addition of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) for various aging times was characterized by liquid 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that alcohol was generated in the TEOS pre-solutions with and without addition of PEG at pH 3 and pH 9 after aging, implying the occurrence of hydrolysis and condensation. The rate of hydrolysis and condensation for the TEOS pre-solution at pH 3 was found to follow the trend of the pre-solution with PEG 2000 > pre-solution with PEG 200 > pre-solution without PEG. However, after adding PEG, the oxygen atom of the deprotonated silanol group (siloxy) of the hydrolyzed TEOS pre-solution at pH3 acted as a reaction center. The result indicates that the oxygen atom is more susceptible to electrophilic attack, resulting in an increased reaction rate. Consequently, the rate of hydrolysis and condensation for of the TEOS pre-solution at pH 9 follows a different order: pre-solution with PEG 200 > pre-solution without PEG > presolution with PEG 2000. The slowest reaction rate of the TEOS pre-solution when adding PEG 2000 is related to the tangled chains of PEG 2000 which sterically reduces the hydrolysis and condensation reaction. This work shows that the correlation between the pH and aging time on hydrolysis and condensation reaction of the TEOS pre-solution can be effectively monitored by liquid 1H NMR spectroscopy, supported by 13C and 29Si liquid NMR spectra. The data obtained should assist optimizing the pH, polymer type/size/concentration and the aging time in the preparation of polymer modified TEOS sols In the second part, SiO2 powders were prepared by the sol-gel in combination with oven-drying method before and after annealing. The experimental result demonstrates the rate of hydrolysis and condensation occurs at a fast rate in TEOS with and without adding PEG at pH3 than in any other pH levels. Because free space can lead to the vaporization of H2O, the ionization of ammonia decreases (i.e., reduction the amount of hydroxide ion), which arises from the rate of hydrolysis and condensation decreases when TEOS at pH9. After attaching PEG, the oxygen atom of the deprotonated silanol group (siloxy) for of the hydrolyzed TEOS pre-solution at pH 3 acted as a reaction center. The result indicates the oxygen atom is more susceptible to electrophilic attack, resulting in an increased reaction rate. Thus, a maximum in the powder yield is reached for TEOS pre-solution with and without adding PEG at pH 3. The SiO2 powder with adding PEG of higher molecular weight presents higher adsorption capacities, pertaining to a greater amount of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups of PEG with higher molecular weight. After annealing, the surface area of SiO2 powder prepared from the TEOS pre-solutions increases as compared with powder without adding PEG and enhances the adsorption of water. A potential absorbent SiO2 powders for producing purified ethanol suitable for fuel and industrial use, can be fabricated by using sol-gel route by careful selection of pH and PEG molecular weight. In addition, during the preparation and characterization of these materials, some interesting phenomena were observed, which are academically valuable. For instance, some samples show very narrow 1H MAS spectra and yet has high 1H-29Si CPMAS sensitivety. This phenomenon suggests us that CPMAS sensitivety may be improved by a new route, i.e., by properly preparing the sample so that CP efficiency is enhanced.

Synthèse, caractérisation et mise en œuvre d’un matériau hybride organique-inorganique photosensible de type résine positive : application à la fabrication de dispositifs de microfuidique par écriture Laser / Synthesis, characterization and implementation of a hybrid organic-inorganic photosensitive resin positive : application to the manufacture of devices by writing laser microfuidique

Mechref, Elias 11 December 2015 (has links)
In recent decades, the organic / inorganic composite materials are the subject of many research works. Because of their unique properties and intermediate between inorganic and organic worlds, these materials are of great interest for many applications such as the area, optical, microfluidics, microelectronics ... The synthesis of this type of materials is carried out at a lower cost in two stages: The synthesis of inorganic network is made by sol-gel process, as well as the organic part of the negative and positive resin type compositions has the particularity of being photo-crosslinked under irradiation ( UV and visible).Meanwhile, the lithography by laser writing has appeared (spot a few microns). It is particularly appropriate for the development of a method for which small objects (a few microns) and small surfaces are to achieve because it eliminates the production of masks. This technique associated with negative resins, is not ideal for manufacturing large objects surfaces due to induced production time too long. It is, for example, be extremely complicated and expensive to use writing laser for producing microfluidic devices. Indeed, the creation of micron-sized channels requires a very large surface area to be exposed. It is therefore more appropriate to work on the combination of laser writing with a resin positive type. The main objective of this work is the synthesis, optimization and implementation of a photosensitive hybrid material resin positive type: Application to the fabrication of microfluidic sensors. Our choice fell on the poly(amic acid) PAA with molar mass of 2340 g/mol as an organic part, known for its good mechanical properties and high thermal stability. The work focuses on a part, on the synthesis of a positive photosensitive resin at the wavelength used (365 nm) based on the PAA polymer. In general, PAA are very soluble in an aqueous alkaline solution, due to the presence of carboxylic acid. In order to improve the contrast between the irradiated and unirradiated part after the development, an dissolution inhibitor 1,3,5-tris [(2-vinyloxy) ethoxy] benzene (TVEB) is grafted to the PAA via the vinyl ether function. This allows the reduction of the carboxylic acid content in the repeating unit of the polymer and as a consequence reduces the dissolution of the non-exposed part.On the other part, the synthesis of the hybrid material based on the optimized photosensitive resin is formed by grafting a precursor ORMOSIL 4-vinylether-phenyltriethoxysilane (VEPTES) pre-hydrolyzed by sol-gel method as the inorganic part to our polymer. In order to optimize the material, a structural study was conducted for the synthesis of the solution until the deposits and the creation of microfluidic channels. A significant improvement in mechanical and thermal properties is recorded at the polymer by adding an inorganic portion.

Göring, M., Seifert, A., Schreiter, K., Müller, P., Spange, S. 15 September 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Amino-functionalized organic–inorganic hybrid materials with a narrow distributed nanostructure of 2–4 nm in size were obtained by means of a template-free and non-aqueous procedure. Simultaneous twin polymerization of novel amino group containing twin monomers with 2,2′-spirobi[4H-1,3,2-benzodioxasiline] has been applied for this purpose. The amino groups of the organic–inorganic hybrid material are useful for post derivatization.

Ternary organic–inorganic nanostructured hybrid materials by simultaneous twin polymerization

Weißhuhn, J., Mark, T., Martin, M., Müller, P., Seifert, A., Spange, S. 06 March 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The acid and base catalyzed simultaneous twin polymerization (STP) of various 2,2′-disubstituted 4H-1,3,2-benzodioxasiline derivatives 2a–d with 2,2′-spirobi[4H-1,3,2-benzodioxasiline] (1) are presented in this paper. The products are nanostructured ternary organic–inorganic hybrid materials consisting of a cross-linked organic polymer, silica and a disubstituted polysiloxane. It can be demonstrated whether and in which extent the copolymerization of the two inorganic fragments of 1 and 2 takes place among the STP and how the molar ratio of the two components determines the structure formation of the resulting hybrid material. Steric and electronic effects of the substituents at the silicon center of 2 on the molecular structure formation and the morphology of the resulting hybrid material were investigated by means of solid state CP MAS 29Si and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). The mechanical properties (hardness and Young's modulus) of the hybrid materials were analyzed by means of nanoindentation measurements. Développement d’une méthodologie de synthèse de silices hybrides à haute capacité extractante / Synthesis of hybrid silica with high density of extractant functions

Besnard, Romain 09 November 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to develop a suitable “all-in-one” approach involving amphiphilic organosilane precursors in order to prepare hybrid materials for solid phase extraction processes. Such molecules combine both condensable and functional parts around a long hydrophobic alkyl chain.Similarly to a surfactant, the amphiphilic behavior of the organosilane molecules is governed by the size of the hydrophilic extractant function. By playing with the curvature agent size, it is possible to adjust the size of the couple extractant part/curvature agent at the interface between the aggregates and the surrounding media. Therefore, the aggregation shape is tunable. This approach constitutes an efficient and original method in order to tune the nanostructure of highly functionalized silica at the early stage of the elaboration. Hybrid organic-inorganic planar objects and vesicles are obtained for smaller curvature agents. Increasing the size of the curvature agent results in a transition of the aggregation geometry from vesicles to cylindrical direct micelles, leading to highly functionalized nanofibers.Comparatively, the addition of a silica precursor as TEOS in the preparation results in the swelling of the condensable part of the amphiphilic organosilane molecules. Thereby, as a curvature agent, the addition of TEOS allows tuning the aggregation towards reverse cylindrical micelles. Solvent effects have also been evaluated, appearing as a critical morphological parameter. Macroporous materials, blackberry-like particles and elongated or spherical nanoparticles can be obtained depending on the solvent. Finally, the accessibility of the functions and the extraction properties of the materials have been studied through chemical modifications and metallic ion extraction experiments (Rare earth elements, platinoids …).

Löschner, Tina 06 August 2013 (has links) (PDF)
