Decarboxylative Generation of Carbenes for the Synthesis of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Copper(I) Complexes - Applications in the Oxidative Coupling of 2-Naphthols

Le présent mémoire décrit la synthèse et l’utilité de complexes Cu-NHC. En premier lieu, la synthèse de complexes de cuivre porteurs de ligand(s) de type carbène-N-hétérocyclique (NHC) via une génération décarboxylative de carbènes sera présentée. En effet, de précédents rapports font état de l’utilisation de carboxylates d’imidazol(in)ium en tant que précurseurs carbéniques sous conditions thermolytiques. Ainsi, la présente étude montre l’utilisation de ces espèces zwitterioniques pour la synthèse de complexes de cuivre(I) mono- et bis-NHC comportant divers substituants et contre-ions. Une seconde partie du projet se concentrera sur l’évaluation de complexes Cu-NHC en tant que catalyseurs pour la synthèse de 2,2’-binaphtols via une réaction de couplage oxydatif de naphtols. L’objectif de ce projet de recherche est d’étudier les effets de variations structurales de différents complexes Cu-NHC afin de construire un processus catalytique plus efficace. Les effets de la structure du catalyseur sur la réaction de couplage ont été évalués en variant son contre-ion, le nombre de ligands NHC se coordonnant au cuivre, ainsi que la nature des substituants du ligand. / The present thesis describes the synthesis and utility of NHC-Cu complexes. First, the synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper complexes via the decarboxylative generation of carbenes is presented. Indeed, literature precedents reported that imidazol(in)ium-2-carboxylates may be used as carbene precursors under thermolytic conditions. As such, the present study demonstrates how zwitterionic carboxylates may be utilized in the formation of both mono- and bis-NHC Cu complexes with various substitution patterns and counterions. Secondly, the NHC-Cu complexes were evaluated for the synthesis of 2,2’-binaphthols via the oxidative coupling of naphthol derivatives. The objective of the study was to investigate how structural variations to various NHC-Cu catalysts may generate a more efficient catalytic process. Effects of the structure of the catalyst on the coupling reaction have been studied by varying the number of NHC ligands coordinating to Cu, as well as the nature of the NHC ligand substituents and the counterions.

Ce travail de thèse se focalise sur l'impact des propriétés acido-basiques des catalyseurs (quantité et force des sites) dans la production d’acroléine par couplage oxydant d’alcools en phase gazeuse. L'influence du rapport entre site acides et sites basiques des catalyseurs a été étudiée dans la condensation aldolique de l'acétaldéhyde et du formaldéhyde en acroléine, réalisée en conditions oxydantes. Les données et corrélations obtenues ont donné des informations indispensables à l’identification des paramètres qui doivent être modifiés afin d'améliorer la sélectivité en acroléine. La première réaction du procédé implique l'oxydation du méthanol et de l'éthanol respectivement en formaldéhyde et acétaldéhyde sur un catalyseur rédox de type FeMoOx.Ensuite, l'aldolisation croisée des deux aldéhydes et la déshydratation en acroléine sont effectuées sur des catalyseurs acido-basiques.Les alcools impliqués dans ce procédé pouvant dériver de la biomasse, cette nouvelle voie de production d'acroléine présente un intérêt élevé puisqu'elle peut remplacer la production actuelle d'acroléine basée sur des ressources fossiles (aujourd'hui l’acroléine est produite industriellement par oxydation du propylène).Le catalyseur optimal doit présenter des caractéristiques amphotères avec une quantité similaire de sites basiques et acides. Une présence modérée et équilibrée de sites acides et basiques améliore le rendement en acroléine et déplace à plus haute température la production des oxydes de carbone. Parmi tous les catalyseurs étudiés, et grâce à ses propriétés acido-basiques spécifiques, MgO supporté sur silice a été identifié comme étant le meilleur catalyseur pour la condensation aldolique des aldéhydes en acroléine en conditions oxydantes / The present work focuses on the impact of the amount and strength of acidic and/or basic sites on the yield of acrolein produced by alcohols oxidative coupling in gas phase. The influence of acid/base ratio of catalytic sites has been studied in the aldol condensation of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde to acrolein performed in oxidizing conditions. The obtained data and correlations supplied valuable information to understand which parameters have to be modified to improve the acrolein selectivity. The first reaction of the process implies methanol and ethanol oxidation respectively to formaldehyde and acetaldehyde on a FeMoOx redox catalyst. Then the cross-aldolization of the two aldehydes and the dehydration to acrolein is performed on acid/base catalysts. Because the alcohols involved in this process can be bio-sourced, this new route to produce acrolein presents a very high interest, since it can replace the current fossil-based acrolein production (nowadays industrially produced by oxidation of propylene). The optimal catalyst should present amphoteric features with a similar amount of both basic and acidic sites. A moderate and balanced presence of acidic and basic sites improves the acrolein yield and the production of carbon oxides is significantly increased only at high temperature. Among all studied catalysts, MgO supported on silica has been identified as the best catalyst for aldol-condensation of aldehydes to acrolein in oxidizing conditions thanks to a given ratio of basic to acidic sites

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins : Natural formation mechanisms and biota retention, maternal transfer, and effects

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDD) and dibenzofurans (PBDF) are a group of compounds of emerging interest as potential environmental stressors. Their structures as well as toxic responses are similar to the highly characterized toxicants polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. High levels of PBDDs have been found in algae, shellfish, and fish, also from remote areas in theBaltic Sea. This thesis presents studies on PBDD behavior in fish and offspring, and natural formation of PBDDs from naturally abundant phenolic precursors. The uptake, elimination, and maternal transfer of mono- to tetraBDD/Fs were investigated in an exposure study reported in Paper I. The effects of PBDDs in fish were examined in a dose-response study (Paper II). It was shown that fish can assimilate PBDD/Fs from their feed, although non-laterally substituted congeners were rapidly eliminated. Laterally substituted congeners were retained as was congeners without vicinal hydrogens to some extent. PBDD/Fs were transferred to eggs, and congeners that were rapidly eliminated in fish showed a higher transfer ratio to eggs. Exposure to the laterally substituted 2,3,7,8-TeBDD had significant effects on the health, gene expression and several reproduction end-points of zebrafish, even at the lowest dose applied. The geographical and temporal variations of PBDD in biota samples from the Baltic Seasuggest biogenic rather than anthropogenic origin. In Paper III, bromoperoxidase-mediated coupling of 2,4,6-tribromophenol yielded several PBDD congeners, some formed after rearrangement. The overall yield was low, but significantly higher at low temperature, and the product profile obtained was similar to congener profiles found in biota from the Swedish West Coast. In Paper IV, photo­chemi­cally induced cyclization of hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers under natural conditions produced PBDDs at percentage yield. Rearranged products were not detected, and some abundant congeners do not seem to be formed this way. However, the product profile obtained was similar to congener profiles found in biota from the Baltic Proper. Since the PBDD congeners found in biota have a high turn-over in fish, the exposure must be high and continuous to yield the PBDD levels measured in wild fish. Thus, PBDDs must presumably be formed by common precursors in general processes, such as via enzymatic oxidations, UV-initiated reactions or a combination of both. The presented pathways for formation of PBDDs are both likely sensitive to changes in climatic conditions.

Jana Roithová, Ph.D. This work is focused on the use of mass spectrometry as the analytical method for chiral recognition in the gas phase. We have examined formation of complexes (S and R) isomers [dimethyl-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate] with sodium. Chiral effect for the fomation of sodium dimers is 1,34±0,06 and that for formation of trimers 2,38±0,22 in favor of the formation of homochiral complexes. Part of the work is devoted to the preparation of isotopically labeled ester [(R)-(−)- di(D3-methyl)-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate]. Mixing of equimolar amounts of D3-(R) and unlabeled (S) isomers leads to the artificial racemate, while we can still distinguish the enantiomers using mass spectrometry. Another part represents the study of the complex formation between (S and R) isomers of [dimethyl-2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'binaphthalene-3,3'-dicarboxylate] with the metal complex [(S,S)-1,5-diaza-cis-decalin]Cu(OH)I depending on the molar ratios in the solution. The Use of Lignin Derivatives to Improve Selected Paper Properties

Ved består huvudsakligen av tre typer av polymerer, cellulosa, hemicellulosa och lignin. Lignin bildas i naturen genom enzymatiskt initierad oxidativ koppling av tre olika typer av fenylpropan-enheter. Dessa bygger genom olika kol-kol- och kol-syre-bindningar upp en amorf tredimensionell polymer. När kemisk massa tillverkas bryts lignin ner och löses ut i kokluten. Luten innehåller de förbrukade kokkemikalierna och bränns generellt i en sodapanna för att regenerera kemikalierna och producera ånga. Sodapannan är emellertid dyr. Därför har den blivit produktionsbegränsande på många massabruk. Att avlägsna en del av ligninet från avluten vore därför önskvärt och att finna ekonomiskt intressanta produkter baserade på lignin från svartlut är därför ett viktigt forskningsområde . Ett lämpligt område för ligninprodukter vore som tillsatts i oblekt massa. Oblekt massa används till stor del för tillverkning av kraftliner, topp- och bottenskikten på wellpapp. När lådor av wellpapp lagras i containrar som färdas över haven, förändras den relativa luftfuktigheten. Detta gör att lådorna kollapsar lättare än om de skulle ha lagrats vid konstant luftfuktighet, även en hög sådan. Detta är på grund av det så kallade mekanosorptiva- eller accelererade krypfenomenet. Genom tillsatts av våtstyrkemedel till kraftliner eller behandla den med hydrofoba ämnen, finns indikatoner på att mekanosorptiva effekten skulle kunna minska. För att försöka minska den effekten har ett lågmolekylärt kraftlignin, som utvunnits med hjälp av tvärsflödesfiltrering av svartlut och svavelsyrafällning, använts. Genom derivatisering av detta lignin med linolja erhölls ett hydrofobt ligninderivat som uppvisar strukturella likheter med biopolymeren suberin. När detta suberinlika ligninderivat tillsätts till massa verkar det mekanosorptiva krypet minska. När lågmolekylärt lignin används tillsammans med ligninradikalinitiatorerna lackas eller mangan(III) i kraftlinermassa erhålls dessutom en våtstyrka på ca 5% av torrstyrkan. Efter aminering av detta lignin gav en tillsatts till kraftlinermassan en våtstyrka på upp till 10% av torrstyrkan. Det finns indikationer på att det mekanosorptiva krypet samtidigt minskar när dessa behandlingar görs som ger upphov till ökad våtstyrka. / Wood consists mainly of three types of polymers; cellulose, hemi cellulose and lignin. Lignin is formed in nature through enzymatic initiated oxidative coupling of three different kinds of phenyl propane units. These form by various carbon-carbon and carbon-oxygen bonds, an amorphous three-dimensional polymer. As chemical pulp is produced, lignin is degraded and dissolved into pulping liquors. These liquors contain the spent cooking chemicals and are generally burnt in a recovery boiler to regenerate cooking chemicals and produce steam. However, the recovery boiler is expensive. Hence, it has become the bottleneck for production in many pulp mills. Removal of some lignin from the spent cooking liquor would, for that reason, be desired and valuable products based on lignin from cooking liquors are searched for. One suitable area for lignin products would be as additive in unbleached pulp. A major product from unbleached pulp is kraftliner, the top and bottom layers of corrugated board. When boxes of corrugated board are stored in containers travelling overseas the relative humidity is varying. This makes the boxes collapse more easily than if they were stored at constant humidity, even a high one. This is due to the so called mechano-sorptive or accelerated creep phenomenon. By addition of wet strength additive to kraftliner or treating it with hydrophobic compounds there are indications on that the mechano-sorptive effect would decrease. Trying to decrease this effect, low molecular weight kraft lignin has been used. It was obtained by cross-flow filtration of black liquor and precipitation by sulphuric acid. By derivatisation of this lignin by linseed oil, a hydrophobic lignin derivative was obtained, similar in structure to units in the biopolymer suberin. As this suberin-like lignin-derivative was added to pulp the mechano-sorptive creep seemed to be lowered. Furthermore, when the low molecular weight lignin was used together with the lignin radical initiators laccase or manganese(III) in kraftliner pulp, a wet strength of about 5% of dry strength was obtained. An amination treatment of this lignin and addition to kraftliner pulp resulted in a wet strength of up to 10% of dry strength. There are indications of that the mechano-sorptive creep also decreases as these treatments, resulting in increased wet strength, are made. / QC 20101103
