The Flourishing School: School-Level Factors that Impact Teacher Flourishing

Sproles, Kraig 06 September 2018 (has links)
When teachers find their work engaging and meaningful, experience joy at school, feel successful, and are able to maintain positive relationships, they are more effective in the classroom and are more likely to stay in the profession. These teachers can be described as flourishing. Situated in the field of positive organizational psychology, a new surge of research investigates individual attributes that impact employee flourishing. However, little research has been conducted to understand school-level factors that create the conditions for teacher flourishing. By employing a sequential, mixed-methods design, this project addresses this gap in the research. In the first phase, extant data from the 2016 Oregon TELL survey was used to quantitatively identify workplace factors that impact perceptions of teacher flourishing. In the second phase, focus groups with teachers from one district were conducted to understand factors that impact flourishing in that setting. In the third phase, data from these focus groups were linked with the TELL data to deepen understanding about how school-level factors impact individual perceptions of teacher flourishing in a specific setting. The results of this study will be used to inform district and state officials about the importance of implementing and supporting school structures that create the conditions for a flourishing school community.

Positive Psychology Interventions in an SLA Context: A Semester-Long Study of the Impact of Positive Psychology on the Well-Being and Language Development of English Language Learners

Rogers, Carolee 14 April 2022 (has links)
This article reports on a study investigating the effectiveness of positive psychology interventions (PPIs) in an Intensive English Program (IEP) for non-matriculated university students. Interventions based on the PERMA model for wellbeing (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) were implemented through weekly 65-minute lessons and short daily activities. Each lesson introduced an aspect of the PERMA model such as positive emotion or achievement. Along with this focused instruction, students concurrently engaged in language learning activities. Teachers also provided short daily activities for reinforcement throughout the week. Six classes received these interventions, while three classes served as a control group and did not receive any treatment. Students' wellbeing, anxiety, and depression were measured pre-, mid-, and post-semester. Language proficiency was also measured pre- and post-semester and compared with the control group. Qualitative data, which were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, were analyzed following an iterative (constant comparative) method where open coding occurred first, followed by axial coding and selective coding (Glaser and Strauss 2017). This facilitated an understanding of patterns indicative of how the PPIs might have affected student engagement and enjoyment. The quantitative analysis did not reveal any significant gains in well-being or any reductions in anxiety or depression. Despite spending 25% of instruction time on PPIs, there were no statistically significant differences in language proficiency gains compared to the control group meaning that the time taken from teaching language did not in any way reduce linguistic gains. However, the qualitative data do suggest a positive impact from the PPIs. Thus, the results of this study confirmed the findings of Seligman et al. (2009) and Gush and Greeff (2018) that PPIs can be implemented without detracting from language instruction and although gains were not statistically significant, qualitative data showed that the participants felt more positive as a result of the interventions.

Caron-Laramée, Amélie January 2016 (has links)

Discovering Solutions: How are Journalists Applying Solutions Journalism to Change the Way News is Reported and What Do They Hope to Accomplish?

Porter, Ashley Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
Solutions journalism, rigorous reporting on responses to social problems, has gained great traction in the last decade. Using positive psychology theory, also known as the theory of well-being, this qualitative study examines the impact of reporting while using solutions journalism techniques. Applying the five pillars of positive psychology theory: positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment (PERMA), this study used interviews and content analysis to investigate how journalists are applying the tools of solutions journalism as well as what they hope to accomplish in the process. Findings revealed that the application of solutions journalism techniques produces hope and community engagement resulting in flourishing and positive change for individuals, communities and all involved in the reporting process.

Är media obotliga pessimister? : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys om svenska mediers coronarapportering

Hovryd, Felicia, Kaiser, Douglas January 2021 (has links)

Using the PERMA Model as a Theoretical Framework for Promoting Well-being with Well Adults in Group Music Therapy: A Mixed Methods Study

Wang, Bing, 0009-0006-6242-8450 08 1900 (has links)
Studies have demonstrated that positive psychological well-being positively influences survival rates across both healthy and diseased populations, suggesting that enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities could serve as an effective health promotion strategy. Alongside traditional treatment, researchers advocate for increased investment in mental health promotion and protection to boost overall well-being. Seligman’s PERMA model, which includes Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, contributes to this well-being by providing a framework for a flourishing life. Additionally, the significant role of music in promoting well-being and health is widely acknowledged, music therapy has the potential to be a unique and rich treatment approach to address diverse mental health problems in a range of populations. The purpose of this study was to better understand the PERMA model as a theoretical framework for promoting well-being with well adults in group music therapy (GMT). This study employed a convergent mixed-methods design, which allowed the researcher to independently collect, analyze, and compare both qualitative and quantitative data. A total of 30 participants from Minzu University of China were recruited and randomly assigned into experimental or control group. The quantitative phase utilized a pre-post test with an experimental group and a control group who received a briefer version of the intervention at the end of the study. Well-being and mental health were measured for all participants at two timepoints: before and after the PERMA-GMT intervention. The General Health Questionnaire-12 and the PERMA-Profiler scale were used to measure changes in well-being and mental health. The quantitative findings revealed that, after eight weeks of group intervention, the experimental group exhibited significant improvements in well-being. Compared to the control group, which did not receive any interventions, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in Positive Emotion (p<.001), Engagement (p<.05), Meaning (p<.01), Happiness (p<.01), Health (p<.01), and overall Well-being (p<.001). Additionally, it experienced reductions in Loneliness(p<.001) and Negative Emotion(p<.01). The experimental group also experienced a significant improvement in their mental health (p<.01) compared to the control group. In the qualitative process, the experiences of PERMA-GMT was explored using semi-structured interviews with 10 participants of the experimental group. In terms of qualitative results, the data indicated that music therapy activities impacted the participants of the experimental group in various degrees across different dimensions of PERMA. These include Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, which collectively contribute to enhanced mental health and well-being. Additionally, the PERMA-GMT approach significantly boosted Happiness, reduces Loneliness, and mitigated Negative Emotion, indicating its comprehensive benefits for well-being. The integration of quantitative and qualitative data found that the qualitative insights confirmed and expanded the quantitative results. The study ultimately confirms that group music therapy interventions based on the PERMA theory are feasible in enhancing well adults’ sense of well-being, which in turn may significantly improved their mental health status. The results offered robust evidence for the efficacy of music therapy in the prevention and intervention of adult mental health issues. / Music Therapy
