Water flow meter, as \"Pilot-Cole\", with hexagonal prismatic configuration.Natally Annunciato Siqueira 22 June 2018 (has links)
Flow measurements are essential for processes management that include fluids. In water companies, measuring inlets and outlets of water is essential to manage revenue and water losses. The water flow can be measured through different instruments with different application principles. The Pitot Cole Tube is able to determine flow in pipes through the pressure differential. This device was invented in 1732 by Henri Pitot to determine fluid velocity and it was improved by Eduard Cole in 1896, allowing to apply the instrument in pipes. The main advantages are the low cost and easy installation, that may occur with the pipe under load. However, the fragility and complexity of its pieces motivated this study: the construction of a simple and robust instrument to measure the water flow. It is proposed the construction of a prototype with pressure plugs installed on opposite faces of a hexagonal prism, then evaluation of its effectiveness in water flow measurements. The results were promising given the stability obtained in the calibration coefficient.

Previous issue date: 2016-07-27 / The Hidrogen sulfide is one of the substances most dangers in the oil and gas production. The H2S causes great economic losses to industries and so their removal is desired. The use of the triazine to remove the H2S has been extensively documented in the literature. However, the number of products that present the physical and chemical properties desired to act as H2S scavenger, available in the market, is reduced. For this reason, the search by molecules that act in removing of H2S has been the object of research in the worldwide. The goal of this work was investigate the thermal stability of two different H2S scavengers: 1,3,5-tris (hydroxyethyl) hexahydro-s-triazine (commercial) and 1,3,5-tris (hydroxypropyl) hexahydro-s-triazine (synthesized in our laboratory ) when they are subject to processing condition in a pilot plant. To achieve this goal was built a pilot plant capable of simulating some operating conditions of the pre-salt exploration, such as temperature, shear rate and residence time. The thermal stability (degradation) of the triazines was investigated by monitoring the conductivity of the samples. For comparison purposes were performed condutimetry tests of samples in bench tests in the laboratory and pilot plant at temperatures of 30?C, 40?C, 50?C, 60?C and 80?C. For both triazines, the conductivity values obtained in the pilot plant is much higher than those found in bench tests: 65.1 S/cm (2C) and 65.1 S/cm (3C) and 45.5 S/cm (2C), and 32.1 S/cm (3C) respectively. The results showed that the conductivity values are strongly affected by the processing time, being more evident differences in their bench tests. The results of monitoring the conductivity of the samples allowed to verify that the 1,3,5-tris (hydroxyethyl) hexahydro-s-triazine (commercial) and 1,3,5-tris (hydroxypropyl) hexahydro-s- triazine (synthesized in our laboratory) does not undergo degradation under the process conditions which have been subjected, either in bench tests or plant pilot.

This work presents a numerical model for the Guarani Aquifer System management in the Ribeirão Preto pilot project area, located in the Northeast of São Paulo State. Topographical, hydrological and hydrogeological data of the region were obtained from printed and digital maps and well database recorded in governmental departments, in cooperation with the Ribeirão Preto coordinating group of the pilot project. The collected data were stored, processed and analyzed making use of GIS tool, followed by the generation of interpolated maps with hydrogeological parameters. These data were transferred to the SPA simulation software, which is based on the finite element method. After mesh construction, and attribution of parameters and boundary conditions, a sensitivity analysis of the model was performed. Different hydrogeological parameter configurations were tested. The model proved to represent the established conceptual model adequately. However base flow data and field visits are necessary, in order to improve the model representativity.

After Lithium: Reclamation Strategies for Salar de Uyuni, BoliviaRayle, Derek 18 June 2018 (has links)
116 pages / This project uses interview responses from local, impacted people to explore the future landscape of the Lithium Pilot Plant in Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, as its development responds to the rise and fall of global lithium demand. As technology changes, so do the materials that support it. Recent research suggests that lithium could become obsolete in the next fifty years despite current trends towards lithium-ion based technology. Such as shift could leave mass quantities of mining remnants and would constitute the next step in a continuous history of Bolivian resource exploitation. This project explores a speculative future scenario where solutions for the gradual transition from current mining practices constructively deal with mining waste and prepare the study area for a post-mining era. Through this exploration, the project deviates from more standard approaches to mined landscape reclamation, which conceive of returning the landscape to its original state. The overarching premise is that, if a reclamation program framework is established, it could permit the territory to transition to alternative, productive uses. Based on several local interviews and my personal evaluations about the future land use and cover classes, I developed a reclamation program for the study area depicted in a 2070 scenario master plan. The proposal establishes a new economy of infrastructure tourism in the region, using agriculture, energy production and celestial movements in a new form of territorial restructuring.

A Geophysical and Geological Analysis of a Regressive-Phase Lake Bonneville Deposit, Pilot Valley, NVSmith, Katelynn Marie 01 April 2018 (has links)
Pilot Valley, located in the eastern Basin and Range, north of Wendover, UT, contains numerous shorelines and depositional remnants of late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville. These remnants present classic ground penetrating radar (GPR) targets due to their coherent stratification, low clay, low salinity, and low moisture content. Three-dimensional (3D) GPR imaging can resolve fine-scale stratigraphy of these deposits down to a few centimeters. While lake levels fluctuated due to flooding events, climatic changes were the dominant factor in controlling lake levels. In Pilot Valley, the paleowind entered from the northwest, with storms coming from the south, and circulated clockwise around the basin, forming offshore sand bars. On the western side of the valley, a uniquely well-preserved interpreted regressive phase beach deposit, dated late Pleistocene, is hypothesized to have been a point bar shortly after the Provo Shoreline period. 3D GPR data, measured stratigraphic sections, cores, mineralogical analysis, and the collection of gastropod samples for radiocarbon dating constrain a reconstruction of the deposit's depositional environment and local paleoclimate for Lake Bonneville. The GPR images, visualized with state-of-the-art petroleum industry tools, reveal fine-scale stratigraphic detail that can be analyzed using seismic stratigraphy concepts. Our study provides a comprehensive model for ancient pluvial lake-shore depositional environments in a Basin and Range setting using an integration of geological and geophysical data.

Using the Automobile Driving Records of Pilots Involved in Aircraft Accidents, as a Possible Predictor of Pilot-Error Aircraft Accidents in the State of UtahHuntington, Garn O. 01 May 1977 (has links)
It was the objective of this study to determine to what extent automobile driving records may be used in predicting the occurrance of pilot-error aircraft accidents.
An analysis was conducted on all pilot-error aircraft accidents in the state of Utah during the time period of January 1, 1972 through December 31, 1973.
Although the total calculations were not significant, the evidence indicates that the pilot who receives many automobile driving citations will be involved in more pilot-error aircraft accidents. A trend was established with age and the Weighted Citation Index, with 70.69 percent of the grouped classes correctly classified.

The Utah Pilot Bridge, Live Load and Dynamic Testing, Modeling and Monitoring for the Long-Term Bridge Performance ProgramPetroff, Steven M. 01 May 2010 (has links)
As part of the Federal Highway Administration's Long-Term Bridge Performance Program, Live Load and Dynamic tests were conducted. A long-term monitoring plan was developed and presented for the Utah Pilot Bridge based on Live Load and Dynamic tests. As one of seven pilot bridges, the Utah Pilot Bridge is one of the first bridges used to initiate the LTBP Program. A formal permit approval process, with the Utah Department of Transportation, was followed to gain permission to conduct the tests and install long-term instrumentation. Analysis provided good results for each test completed, with a summary of test results presented. A Finite Element Model was created and refined based off test data. Instrumentation was installed and checked to ensure quality data was streaming to the collection site.
