The Effects of Urban Containment Policies on Commuting Patterns

Kwon, Sung Moon 27 August 2015 (has links)
<p> During the past several decades, most U.S. metropolitan areas have experienced strong suburbanization of housing and jobs (i.e., urban sprawl). The sprawl that arises from urban growth has become a big issue in many metropolitan areas in the U.S. In response, there has been increased interest in urban containment policies. There are contrasting views (planning-oriented vs. market-oriented) of urban sprawl and urban containment policies. Planning-oriented scholars asserted the problems of `geographic sprawl (GS)' and the positive effects of urban containment polices, while market-oriented scholars asserted the problems of `economic sprawl (ES)' and the negative or negligible effects of urban containment policies. Therefore, this dissertation analyzed whether urban containment policies affect urban sprawl, employment center formation, and urban commuting. </p><p> The results of this dissertation indicate that urban containment policies play an important role in affecting urban sprawl, employment center formation, and urban commuting, as well as explaining the contrasting views (planning-oriented vs. market-oriented) of urban containment policies. Implementing urban containment policies can produce positive effects such as compact development, which can promote J-H balance. However, as seen in the relationship between urban containment policies, urban sprawl and housing values, stronger urban containment policies can produce negative effects, such as traffic congestion and an increase in housing prices.</p>

Planning as a function of expertise and task difficulty in a technical domain

Saíz, María Dolores. January 1991 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was the investigation of the planning processes among individuals of different levels of expertise (i.e., novices and experts) in the machining domain, performing on two different tasks of increasing complexity (i.e., Drawing 1 and Drawing 2). / Twenty-four subjects were assigned randomly to four experimental groups. Subjects were trained to think aloud and verbal protocols were collected as they performed the task. The protocols were analyzed according to a well-defined and reliable coding scheme to identify planning and other operations. / No significant results were found for the planning variable. Significant results were found for the amount of evaluation and writing. Experts appeared to do better than novices in both task conditions. Furthermore, the best performers in all the experimental groups seemed to plan the least. The absence of significant effects of expertise or complexity on planning contradicts the hypothesis derived from the literature. Possible explanations for these results are offered.

The feasibility of GIS in urban planning in Riyadh

Alazmi, Saud 19 September 2012 (has links)
Over the past decade, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid growth in its urban industrial areas. The municipal government has responded by creating a Geographic Information Systems (GIS Centre), but its usefulness in urban planning is unclear. This research will address this question by: 1) examining The different ways GIS can be; 2) assessing existing industrial land use conditions as well as critical issues that the city presently faces in planning; 3) analyzing current GIS applications being used by Riyadh Municipality and the GIS Centre; and 4) recommending improvements to urban land-use planning through enhanced GIS applications. This research concludes that a step-by-step approach that can be embedded into ArcMap Software that is currently being used by the Task Force Centre would be the optimal solution. Advantages and disadvantages of the approach are critically examined, including a discussion of future goals for this project.
