Řízení kvality v projektech / Quality Management in Projects

The main objective is to organize and enrich the theory of Project Quality Management, which was achieved by several sub-objectives. There was performed a research on Project Quality Management in practice not only in Czech Republic, but also in the world. This research found the most common standard/methodology for Project Quality Management and subsequently was applied in practice. This thesis also includes selection of the most appropriate techniques and tools for Quality Management. Theoretical section explains basic terms related to the topic of thesis, described the most important standards and Project Quality Management methodologies, determined hypotheses and way of questionnaire survey carried out a research related to thesis topic. Given the results of the survey is the practical section devoted to application of PMBOK methodology into practical Project Quality Management. Follows an overview of the most appropriate techniques and tools suitable for Project Quality Management also based on results of research.

Epistemic Skills Deficiency in the Project Management Body of Knowledge

Information Technology (IT) projects continue to fail despite being managed by certified Project Management Professionals (PMP) and professionally trained non-certified Project Managers (PM). This study addressed PMPs and qualified PMs who continue to experience IT project failure at a high rate. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore perspectives of PMs and their understanding of project management best practices in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). There were 5 research questions focused on IT project failures, lessons learned, trends, deficiencies in project management framework, and adherence to standard PM practices. This study utilized a phenomenological approach and an inductive analysis based on Koskinen's theory that a lack of project management knowledge can contribute to project failure. Data were collected from open-ended interviews with 20 project managers; these data were then inductively coded and analyzed for themes and patterns. Findings yielded categories of poor scope management, cost overruns, unmanaged resources, un-realistic requirements, inadequate stakeholder management, and deficiencies in content in the PMBOK standards. The results could influence positive social change for PMs to assess the depth of project management training needed to understand early warning signs of IT project failure. These changes could promote awareness within the project management community and encourage more in-depth PM competency training.

Problem statement: Virtual and distributed projects are now fast replacing collocated projects as they bring up more skills needed for projects. There are various problems that have been encountered while working on virtual and distributed projects which include lack of face-to-face communication, different geographical locations and culture. Project management, through the use of project management methodologies, is becoming more crucial to ensure the problems are removed or minimized. The aim of this study is to look at the use and effectiveness of project management methodologies in virtual and distributed projects. Research method: The positivistic research paradigm was used in this study since it allowed the researcher to quantify and analyse the data received from the survey. As part of the positivistic research a survey was conducted for the research method while a questionnaire was used for data collection purposes. The collected data was then tested and analysed using the quantitative data analysis which included descriptive statistics, t-tests, factor analysis, KMO and Bartlett’s test, Cronbach’s alpha test, spearman’s rho, Levene’s test for equality of variance and non-parametric correlations. Main findings: While companies apply different project management methodologies to virtual and distributed projects, it is other factors (which include lack of face-to-face communication, different geographical locations and different cultures) which influence the use and effectiveness of the project management methodologies as well as the success of the virtual and distributed projects. In some cases it is how the project management methodology is used as some only apply certain parts of it while others report not having enough time to apply the project management methodology. Principal conclusion: Project management methodologies are useful and effective in virtual and distributed projects when they are effectively applied and followed. Issues caused by lack of face to face communication, different geographical areas and different cultures also have to be addressed as they influence the results on the virtual and distributed projects’ success. The thesis is focused on understanding the current state of project management in selected companies, including proposing their own suggestions and recommendations. Own suggestions and recommendations are directly used in the case study of a real project-an exclusive two-days training for exclusive leaders. The thesis has two parts. In the first part are described the elementary terms of project management. Defined individual phases of the life cycle, described selected project documentation and international standards and methodologies of project management. In the second part is a brief description of the selected company, describes the project lifecycle, including comparisons of the international standards and methodology and evaluation deficiencies. Suggestions and recommendations are used in the case study and in the final discussion are evaluated practical suggestions and recommendations.

The thesis is focused on the analysis of processes in project management in the automotive sphere. After a short introduction of selected company is discribed life cycle of engagement. In the analytical part of thesis is metodically designed procedure for the analysis of ongoing processes in lifecycle of engagement. Qualitative description of the processes is converted into process models in notation BMPN and after are created tables for more detailed processes analysis. Based on the analysis and knowledge of the tools of project management are for the weaknesses of the processes recommended tools for their elimination.

Currently this area still has great relevance. This happens because companies can achieve their objectives of short, medium and long term through the implementation of projects. This may occur through exchange of equipment, technological change, expansion or modernization of facilities and development of new products to take advantage of opportunities identified in the market. Thus, it is vital that these projects are well managed, what can be achieved by using as main reference the PMBOK, since this guide is widely known both in the academic and professional environments. Then the time spent on project implementation can be a competitive advantage for the organization, so it is important to reduce the time needed to complete the project. So for this, the concepts and principles of QRM, which is a pragmatic approach aimed at reducing the lead time can be used. This approach is used not only on the shop-floor, but also in the administrative environment. The QRM promotes joint action with the other partners in the supply chain to reduce lead times once it become evident the holistic earned gains. From this context emerges the present work that aims to reduce the lead time in the life cycle of a project, through a proposal to integrate the QRM approach and modern project management given by the PMBOK guide. This proposal will be utilized in an illustrative case study on a project of the oil sector that is sensitive to the term. / Gerenciamento de projetos é um conceito antigo e que vem sendo estudado desde a década de 1950 no período da guerra fria, onde grandes projetos militares foram desenvolvidos. Atualmente, os projetos são vitais para as organizações, visto que, através destes, essas podem alcançar seus objetivos trocando equipamentos, alterando tecnologia, expandindo ou modernizando suas instalações e também para que sejam aproveitadas oportunidades identificadas no mercado. Dessa forma, é vital que esses projetos sejam bem gerenciados, o que pode ser auferido ao se utilizar como principal referência o PMBOK, uma vez que este é um guia amplamente conhecido tanto no ambiente acadêmico como profissional. Além disso, o prazo de implementação do projeto pode ser uma vantagem competitiva para a organização, sendo importante a redução do prazo necessário para conclusão do projeto. Para isso, utilizou-se a abordagem do QRM que visa a redução de lead time não somente no chão de fábrica, mas também no ambiente administrativo. Essa abordagem, o QRM, promove o engajamento dos outros parceiros da cadeia de abastecimento na redução de lead times, uma vez que fica evidente os ganhos holísticos auferidos por todos. A partir deste contexto, surge a presente dissertação que tem como objetivo o a redução de lead time no ciclo de vida de um projeto, através de uma proposta de integração da abordagem QRM e a moderna gestão de projetos dado pelo guia PMBOK. Esta proposta será utilizada em um estudo de caso ilustrativo em um projeto do setor de petróleo que é sensível ao prazo.

This thesis handles the issue of Project Management, especially formation and structuring of the plan of project control (Project Management Plan). Formation of the Project Management Plan is one of the activities, which is performed by project manager in cooperation with customer in the first phase of project life cycle. The content of this thesis is a proposal of optimised structure of Project Management Plan with predefined description and extent of individual parts (chapters). In addition, there are different methodologies and their comparison described in this thesis, which are usually used in Project Management. These are PMBOK, Prince2, ČSN ISO 10006 and the project methodology of Siemens, which is called Chestra. These methodologies form the base for a newly formed structure of Project Management Plan. In the supplement of this thesis, there is a template of the document Project Management Plan, with which a project manager is able to form a new management plan of particular project easily. This template was created on the basis of particular project analysis within the scope and work of Siemens IT Solutions and Services Company and reflects not only theoretical knowledge, but also the needs of the particular company.

This thesis is focused on the methodological documents improvement of the company in the field of project management. The changes are based on the theoretical base, which is made up of the general project methodologies selected by the author. The first part describes two chosen methodologies, use of which, is based on knowledge of the company environment. The second part then describes the existing guidance documents that can be used as inspiration to create a new methodological document. The output of the thesis is the methodological project document, which takes into account both the principles and practices described in the context of general methodologies, current guidance documents and knowledge of the company environment.
