New collective structures in the Z=76 stable odd neutron nucleus, 187OsSithole, Makuhane Abel January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Low- and medium-spin bands of 187Os have been studied using the AFRODITE array,
following the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements
of
coincidences, angular distribution ratios (RAD), polarization and
-intensities were performed using eleven High Purity Germanium (HPGe) clover detectors.
In the current work, all the previously known bands have been signi cantly
extended and ve new bands have been added to the level scheme. The observed
bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM), cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-
Bogoliubov (CNSB) formalism and Quasiparticle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (QTR) model. Systematic
comparison of bands with the neighbouring isotopes has also been made. Comparison
of the models with experimental data shows good agreement.

A Prototype Polarimetric Camera for Unmanned Ground VehiclesUmansky, Mark 26 August 2013 (has links)
Unmanned ground vehicles are increasingly employing a combination of active sensors such as LIDAR with passive sensors like cameras to perform at all levels of perception, which includes detection, recognition and classification. Typical cameras measure the intensity of light at a variety of different wavelengths to classify objects in different areas of an image. A polarimetric camera not only measures intensity of light, but can also determine its state of polarization.
The polarization of light is the angle the electric field of the wave of light takes as it travels. A polarimetric camera can identify the state of polarization of the light, which can be used to segment highly polarizing areas in a natural environment, such the surface of water. The polarimetric camera designed and built for this thesis was created with low cost in mind, as commercial polarimetric cameras are very expensive. It uses multiple beam splitters to split incoming light into four machine vision cameras. In front of each machine vision camera is a linear polarizing filter that is set to a specific orientation. Using the data from each camera, the Stokes vector can be calculated on a pixel by pixel basis to determine what areas of the image are more polarized. Test images of various scenes that included running water, standing water, mud, and vehicles showed promise in using polarization data to highlight and identify areas of interest. This data could be used by a UGV to make more informed decisions in an autonomous navigation mode. / Master of Science

Study of reflective and polarization properties of objects found in automotive LiDAR applicationsTonvall, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
In the development of autonomous vehicles, replacing the driver and its perceptive abilities is one of many technical challenges. As a part in solving these challenges, Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) is a promising technology. In short, LiDAR works by using lasers to detect objects in its vicinity by detecting the light that reflects on them. With knowledge of the reflective properties of an object, a prediction can be made regarding whether a certain LiDAR unit will be able to detect the object or not. When making this prediction, the common description of reflectance is often insufficient. Instead, a more complete description is given by the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of a surface, which describes reflection on the surface while taking the incident and reflected direction into consideration. In this thesis, an experimental setup was built with the capabilities of measuring the BRDF while taking incident and reflected polarization into account. Program software was written in Python and integrated with the hardware, providing a user interface for simple control of the setup. The BRDF was measured on a total of 6 samples; 2 reference samples and 4 samples taken from the hood of 4 different cars. Conclusively, the setup provided useful information about the reflective and polarization properties of the samples. These measurements can help in predicting whether or not a surface can be detected by a given LiDAR unit, and can also be helpful when designing new LiDAR units by providing useful information about the surfaces they are required to detect.

Conceptual design of the spin rotator for the SuperKEKB High Energy RingPeng, Yuhao 04 January 2022 (has links)
This project focuses on the conceptual design of the spin rotator for a proposed
electron polarization upgrade of the SuperKEKB. The goal is to achieve the longitudinal
electron polarization at the interaction point (IP). In this design, four existing
dipoles will be replaced with four rotator magnets on both sides of the IP. The rotator
magnet structure consists of dipole-solenoid combined function magnets with
skew-quadrupoles installed on top to decouple the x-y plane. The advantage of this
design is that the original machine geometry is maintained, and the original machine
can be recovered by turning off the solenoid-quadrupole in the rotator magnet. With
Bmad, a powerful lattice simulation tool applied to perform the optimizations for this
design, the longitudinal spin alignment at the IP reaches a significantly high level,
greater than 99.99%. Furthermore, the influence of the installation of the spin rotator
on the original machine dynamics is minimized to an acceptable level. / Graduate
