Passalacqua-Estremadoyro, W. Jorge. January 1996 (has links)
The thesis is focused on the Nueva Coronica y Buen Gobierno, by Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala, written in the Peruvian highlands between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. Although specifically designed to superficially appear innocuously and mildly complaining, the author disguises his transcendental subversive intentions by limiting the scope of the referential subject to the members of his cultural group. / While the introduction explains in detail the objective of the thesis and reviews some literature on the subject, the first chapter provides a broad and summary overview of indigenous Andean cosmology, its constitutive elements and its main characteristics. In the second chapter these elements of cosmological philosophy are presented as the only available tools at the disposal of the indigenous population in order to understand that catastrophic event referred to as the Conquest and the inevitable conclusion to which it arrived. The third chapter explores the use of those cosmological tools and the understanding of the disaster in the subversive endeavour of cultural survival in the context of colonization. Finally, the fourth chapter examines the plurality of levels of subversive messages conveyed by the author and his hidden message of rebellious hope. Within the same frame of cosmologically oriented thought patterns and messianistic expectations, Guaman Poma alters one apparently insignificant historical detail, thereby making possible the cosmic regeneration and historical rebirth of the last Inca emperor and his entire people. A section of conclusions and a bibliography follow the fourth and last chapter.

= 538... . / New technologies recently applied to the fabrication of organic screens and displays have allowed the manufacture of lighter, thinner monitors in comparison to either the conventional cathodic rays tube (CRTs) or the liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In addition, displays based on organic materials (the so-called organic light emitting displays (OLEDs and the polymeric light emitting displays - PLEDs) may exhibit improved efficiency and flexibility. The organic displays have attracted attention of a number of research groups aimed at investigating the potential applications of these new devices in the electronic industry. In this study, a new hybrid composite comprising an inorganic phase dispersed in a polymeric matrix was investigated as a possible candidate material for displays fabrication. The continuous, organic phase was a blend containing a conducting polymer, viz. polyaniline (PANI) or its derivative poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) and an insulating polymer, P(VDF-TrFE) (Poly(viny1idene fluoride- trifluorethylene)). Micro particles of Zn2SiO4:Mn (SZF) was added to the polymeric phase as the luminescent, active material. Luminescent devices were fabricating using a conventional trilayer architecture in which a thin film of the hybrid composite was deposited between two conducting electrodes. As the anode electrode we used either Indium-TinOxide (ITO) or Fluorine-Tin-Oxide (FTO)-covered glass plates. Evaporated aluminum was used as the cathode electrode. The material/device characterization was carried out using electric conductivity, luminescence (L) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. PANI/P(VDFTrFE)/ SZF (05/95)/80 and POMA/P(VDF-TrFE)/SZF (25/75)/80 composites compositions presented the best performance, with electric conductivity of ca. 10-3 S/m. Luminescence and photoluminescence measurements revealed that both devices exhibited an emission band centered at 538 nm... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).

Understanding Clinically Meaningful Change in Walking and Balance Ability for Patients Undergoing Inpatient Physical Therapy after Stroke

Canbek, Jennifer 01 January 2011 (has links)
Background: Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Physical therapists treating patients post acute stroke use measurement tools specifically designed to measure gait and balance ability. People with sub-acute stroke typically have rapid and large changes in gait and balance ability while undergoing inpatient physical therapy. There is a lack of information about how much change in gait speed is needed in hospitalized people with sub-acute stroke to be considered an important amount. There is no information regarding the validity, and reliability of the Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA) to measure balance ability in people with stroke or how much change is needed to be important to people in the sub acute phases of stroke. Objective: The purpose of this study was to 1) estimate minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for comfortable gait speed in persons who have experienced stroke and are undergoing inpatient physical therapy using 3 different anchors of change; 2) estimate minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for Tinetti POMA in persons who have experienced stroke and are undergoing inpatient physical therapy using 3 different anchors of change; 3) determine the test retest reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) for the Tinetti POMA; and 4) explore the construct validity of the Tinetti POMA for use in people with stroke undergoing inpatient physical therapy. Study Design: This study was a prospective, longitudinal study, which followed a cohort of patients who were undergoing inpatient physical therapy post acute stroke. Methods: Participants were recruited if they had a first documented stroke and were receiving physical therapy during inpatient rehabilitation. Participants were excluded from the study if they had a history of a previous stroke, were medically unstable, were non-English speaking or were unable to walk without assistance prior to the current stroke event. Comfortable gait speed measured by a 5-meter walk test, Tinetti POMA scores and motor Functional Independence Measure (FIMTM) scores were collected at admission to and discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. To determine test re-test reliability, two trials of comfortable gait speed were administered during the same treatment session and two trials of Tinetti POMA were performed one day apart. Global Rating of Change (GROC) scores were collected at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. A score of 6 (¡°a great deal better, an important amount¡±) on a Global Rating of Change scale and achievement of ¡Ý17 point change on the motor FIM was used to dichotomize participants into those who had important change in walking and balance ability and those who did not. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to estimate important change values for gait speed using the three anchors. Effect Size (ES) index was used to determine the responsiveness of gait speed and the Tinetti POMA, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC2,1) was used to determine test re-test reliability and MDC values for gait speed and Tinetti POMA and Spearman¡¯s Rho (rs) was used to explore the construct validity of the Tinetti POMA. Results: The participants in this study were 43 people with average age of 76¡À11 years who had experienced first documented stroke, began inpatient physical therapy at a mean of 8¡À5 days post stroke and were discharged from the hospital at an average of 38¡À11 days post stroke. The mean length of stay for all participants was 23¡À11 days. MCID of comfortable gait speed was estimated to be 0.24 m/s (AUC= 0.644 , sn/sp=66%/64%, LR+=1.83, LR-0.54) anchored to motor FIM change scores. Test re-test reliability of gait speed was ICC2,1=0.931 at admission and ICC2,1=0.987 at discharge. MDC of comfortable gait speed was 0.12 m/s at admission and 0.08 m/s at discharge. MCID of the Tinetti POMA was 7 points (AUC=0.743, sn/sp=79%/64%, LR+=2.18, LR-=0.32) anchored to motor FIM change. Test re-test reliability of the Tinetti POMA was ICC2,1 0.859 and MDC was 5 points. Tinetti POMA scores were moderately correlated to motor FIM and gait speed scores at admission (rs=0.74 and 0.67) and discharge (rs=0.60 and 0.76) to gait speed and motor FIM scores. Conclusions: People with stroke who experience a 7 point change on the Tinetti POMA during inpatient rehabilitation are likely to experience an important change in functional mobility. The Tinetti POMA demonstrates validity and reliability to measure balance ability people with stroke. More research is needed to estimate meaningful change people with sub-acute stroke using larger cohorts with similar characteristics.

Rubec, Emily-Jayn 05 1900 (has links)
The end of the 15th century introduces a new era in America. The arrival of Spanish explorers, conquistadors and colonists on the New Continent marks the beginning of American History. In works written during the first decades of colonization, most Natives merely take on the role of objects. Following the indoctrination of part of the Native population, this passive role becomes more active when some Natives decide to make their voices heard by the means of writing. This is exactly what Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala decides to do in his 1615 Nueva coronica y buen gobierno, written to King Phillip III of Spain. This project studies a selection of pictures from the chronicle as intersemiotic cultural translations of colonial society that translate colonial events, including the ethnic power struggles within the social hierarchy, using semiotic units belonging to various culture codes (Spanish, Catholic, Andean). Our goal is to show that the hybridity that shapes the semiotic system used in the target text reveals the foreignizing nature of the translation, and in turn, the antagonistic relations with the official colonial ideology.

In this work was developed an electroluminescent (EL) device made up with a hybrid composite (CH), that is formed by a polymeric blend and an inorganic EL material. The conductive polymer, poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) doped with p-Toluene sulphonic acid (TSA), and an isolating polymer, the poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDFTrFE)), was used to make the polymer blend. An inorganic EL material, the zinc silicate manganese-doped (Zn2SiO4:Mn), was added to the blend, forming the hybrid composite. The composite was deposited by drop-casting over a Fluoride Tin Oxide substrate (FTO) and after the crystallization in an oven a metal electrode was deposited by vacuum evaporation, forming a type “sandwich” structure. In this work were constructed different devices. Aluminum (Al) and Gold (Au) were used as upper electrodes, therefore the device structures were: FTO/CH/Al and FTO/CH/Au. To analyze the electrical behavior of the FTO/CH/Al device was applied the theories of Thermionic Emission, Schottky Emission and Poole- Frenkel Emission. Using these theories was possible to obtain parameters such as; the barrier height from the metal/CH junction, CH conductivity and diode rectifier factor. The FTO/CH/Au device was characterized using the impedance spectroscopy technique. For this device was also possible to obtain the barrier height from the metal/CH junction, CH conductivity and CH dielectric constant. For the last two parameters the dependence with the temperature were also observed. The application of the theories of Thermionic Emission, Schottky Emission and Poole-Frenkel Emission produced similar results to that obtained by the impedance spectroscopy technique. The luminescence spectra, for the devices, showed a peak at l = 528 nm with emission stability in time that it is comparable of pure inorganic devices.
