_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The object of this dissertation is the translation competence required of those who deal with the text of comics related to pop culture aesthetics. The theoretical framework includes work developed since 1998 by the PACTE group, at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, investigating translation competence and its acquisition. Other theoretical concepts employed range from Reception Theory, introduced by Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, the iconic representation based on the theory of signs by C. S. Peirce and other concepts, such as fictive orality and the implied translator. The aim of the research is to assess whether a model reader – the implied reader capable of recognizing elements of pop culture and identifying them – is required so the humor intended in the original work can be recreated in the translation; to show that the translator who is willing to perform this task is the initial implied reader and can thus be considered an implied translator; to observe knowledge of verbal and imagetic elements of pop culture can be considered essential for the translation of the webcomics selected; and to analyze the concept of fictive orality, checking how its presence in the comic strips influences their translation. A total of 31 webcomics were analyzed with the assistance of the theory mentioned above.

Caractérisation par nanoindentation et modélisation micromécanique de l’activation de mécanismes inélastiques : plasticité cristalline et transformation martensitique / Nanoindentation characterization and micromechanical modeling of inelastic mechanisms activation : crystalline plasticity and martensitic transformation

Caër, Célia 09 December 2013 (has links)
This study aims at modeling and characterizing by nanoindentation the discrete variant activation events at the nano scale. A new criterion is proposed to describe the first martensite variant activation beneath the indenter. Evidence of discrete martensitic transformation is observed during nanoindentation by the successive occurrences of pop-in and pop-out load events on the force versus displacement curve during respectively loading and unloading. Thus, the spatial-temporal discontinuity of phase transformation activation and propagation is highlighted at the nano scale with the introduction of an indentation Patel-Cohen factor for both forward austenite-martensite and reverse phase transformations. Dislocation emission in pure nickel is first studied to validate both the nanoindentation testing procedure using a Berkovich indenter and the calculations of indentation Schmid factors to describe excursion bursts corresponding to dislocation activation and propagation. Good agreement is found between nanoindentation tests performed on a superelastic CuAlBe SMA and theoretical crystallographic dependence of pop-in and pop-out loads predicted by the new introduced indentation Patel and Cohen factor

An Exploration of Melody, Harmony, and Improvisation in the Music of Stevie Wonder

Lovell, Jeffrey 11 July 2013 (has links)
In this dissertation, I examine Stevie Wonder's compositional style from his celebrated "classic period," (1972-1976) focusing specifically on the concentrated two-year time span from 1972-1974 marked by his unparalleled creative output that launched him into superstardom. My study operates on the premise that most melodic relationships are governed by a fundamentally pentatonic process and that harmonic relationships are largely governed by jazz-influenced tonal processes. I have transcribed dozens of examples from the time period under review in order to survey the expressive interaction between these two related but distinct systems and the resulting effect their usage has on melody and harmony. Using Schenkerian reductive analysis as my primary tool, I uncover recurring patterns that shape and shed light on his style. The final chapter of this study focuses on the ways in which Wonder's improvised melodic lines relate to the voice-leading framework of the basic melodic ideas in his performance of "I Love Every Little Thing About You" and also the ways in which his improvisation impacts forward motion in the course of this song.

In general lines, this work is to analyze Santiago Nazarian (2013) novel, Mastigando Humanos, seeking to think the issue of youth hero as the mass media myth. The discussion undertaken in this research was guided by the bias of pop literature and, in order to think the cultural industry and consumer culture, we attempted to systematize how the pop discourse referentiality is related to youth culture and the idea of hero nowadays. It was delineated as goal to analyze the novel study in the imaginary about the contemporary hero, product of teen consumer culture, through the critical eye of pop discourse. From the pop concepts, it were raised questions about the consumption culture, identifying the strategies of building a concept of adolescence in liquid society that the young figure was forged as the ideal consumer and as the model of a lifestyle. By linking pop literature and juvenile consumer culture, we attempted to analyze the hero myth as celebrity status, rereading features of the classic hero of antiquity and the anti-hero of modernity. It concludes that: the desire to become the mythical hero is linked to an image of artificial success, unreachable and produced by media culture, based on a construction of the juvenile imagination.

This thesis intendsto expound the relationship between cinema and painting and how they interact in the development of their own languages. The field of analysis is restricted to American art, the so-called Classical Narrative film making and PopArt. Alongthe research process it was pointed out how cinema creates its own language, not born out of theater but suffering influences coming from other fields as painting, vaudeville, and the arts of entertainment. Painting as well will be influenced by film. Thiswork intends to explain this process, showing these intersections among arts, which are present in myoeuvre, yet now in a less intuitive manner / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes
