Palaeoenvironment of Late Neogene Lacustrine Sediments at the Gray Fossil Site, Tennessee, USA

A new palaeopalynological investigation was conducted on 15 samples from four test-pits at the Gray Fossil Site (Bear Pit, Elephant Pit, Test Pit 2-2010, and Rhino Pit). In total, 50 morpho-species of miospores (including five species of spores, eight species of gymnosperm pollen, and 37 species of angiosperm pollen) and 18 morpho-species of freshwater algal micro-remains were identified. One new morphological species, related to zygospores of the Zygnemataceae, Stigmozygodites grayensis sp. nov., is proposed. The assemblage of fossil algae recovered provides insights into the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the uppermost (125 cm) part of the Gray Fossil Site sedimentary cover, deposited after the formation of a number of sinkholes, and the fill of the palaeosinkholes. Most of the algae identified prefer meso-to eutrophic conditions and are characteristic of stagnant to slowly flowing shallow fresh water. Therefore, the lacustrine fossiliferous sediments at the Gray Fossil Site represent pond deposits. The palaeopalynological analysis revealed differences in the composition of the miospore and algal assemblages of the pits studied, suggesting that the Test Pit 2-2010, Bear, and Elephant pits are similar and may have been formed in the same pond, while the presence of a higher percentage of algae in the Rhino Pit may indicate sedimentation in a separate water body.

Multi-Proxy Characterisation of the Storegga Tsunami and Its Impact on the Early Holocene Landscapes of the Southern North Sea

Yes / Doggerland was a landmass occupying an area currently covered by the North Sea until marine inundation took place during the mid-Holocene, ultimately separating the British landmass from the rest of Europe. The Storegga Event, which triggered a tsunami reflected in sediment deposits in the northern North Sea, northeast coastlines of the British Isles and across the North Atlantic, was a major event during this transgressive phase. The spatial extent of the Storegga tsunami however remains unconfirmed as, to date, no direct evidence for the event has been recovered from the southern North Sea. We present evidence of a tsunami deposit in the southern North Sea at the head of a palaeo-river system that has been identified using seismic survey. The evidence, based on lithostratigraphy, geochemical signatures, macro and microfossils and sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA), supported by optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating, suggests that these deposits were a result of the tsunami. Seismic identification of this stratum and analysis of adjacent cores showed diminished traces of the tsunami which was largely removed by subsequent erosional processes. Our results confirm previous modelling of the impact of the tsunami within this area of the southern North Sea, and also indicate that these effects were temporary, localized, and mitigated by the dense woodland and topography of the area. We conclude that clear physical remnants of the wave in these areas are likely to be restricted to now buried, palaeo-inland basins and incised river valley systems.

"O povo da lagoa: uso do SIG para modelamento e simulação na área arqueológica do Camacho" / "The people of the Lagoon: using GIS for modelling and simulation in the Camacho Archaeological Area"

Os dados obtidos da topografia, da geomorfologia, do sensoriamento remoto para a região do Camacho, litoral sul de Santa Catarina, foram reunidos e integrados no SIG GRASS. Durante a ocupação desta região pela população pré-histórica, de aproximadamente 5000 anos Antes do Presente (anos AP) até 1000 anos AP, o nível médio marinho local caiu aproximadamente 2m. Como a região é muito plana, esta regressão implicou em uma grande alteração da extensão da laguna, e, portanto, da área para coleta de moluscos e para pesca. O tipo e o tamanho dos peixes capturados, cujos restos podem ser encontrados nos sítios arquológicos deixados por este povo, permitem concluir que provavelmente os antigos moradores possuiam tecnologia de pesca, como barcos e redes. Ao redor da laguna estão espalhados mais de 50 sambaquis, alguns com centenas de milhares de metros cúbicos de volume. Pesquisa em alguns destes sítios mostram que tinham a função de cemitérios. Alguns destes sambaquis são contemporâneos. Com o tempo, antigos sambaquis eram abandonados e novos começavam a ser construídos. O objetivo deste trabalho é contribuir no entendimento desta ocupação através da relação espacial que os sambaquis mantinham entre si e com a paisagem ao seu redor. Com os dados da topografia foi possível construir o Modelo de Elevação Digital da região. As informações geomorfológicas, geológicas e topográficas, reunidas e integradas no SIG, permitem simular a movimentação do nível médio do mar (NMM) no período desde aproximadamente 5000 anos AP até o momento atual. Modelos desenvolvidos no GRASS mostram a lagoa como espaço principal de circulação deste povo. / Data from the Camacho region, southern coast of the Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, were collected and combined in the GIS GRASS. This region is a coastal plain, with many lagoons, and was occupied by a prehistoric population at least from c. 5,000 years before present (BP) to 1,000 years BP. In this period, the local mean sea level had fallen c. 2 m. As the region is very flat, this regression implied a reduction in the lagoon area, and consequently a reduction in the catchment area for these people. At the edges of the nowadays lagoons there are more than 50 shell mounds, some with volume greater than 100,000 m${}^3$, where the dead were buried. Some of that shell mounds are contemporary and were in use for thousand of years, but as the time passed, the ancient sites were abandoned and new sites began to be constructed. The objective of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the spacial relationship between the shell mound and the landscape of the region. For this purpose the information about geology, geomorphology, topography, and datations were gathered and integrated in GRASS. A Digital Elevation Model was constructed and the movement of the mean sea level was simulated. The results are consistent with the occupation of the region. Other models, developed in GRASS, show that the lagoon was the main route of circulation of the prehistoric people.

Ce travail de recherche a mis en œuvre une approche géoarchéologique multi-indicateurs pour analyser les impacts et les forçages anthropo-climatiques des paysages du plateau de Corent et de ses marges de la fin du Néolithique à la période romaine. Une cartographie géomorphologique détaillée du secteur d’étude a été réalisée en s’appuyant sur l’analyse de données LiDAR et la prospection de terrain. Deux secteurs ont été sélectionnés pour conduire des prospections géoarchéologiques approfondies : i) le Lac du Puy, un petit bassin à proximité immédiate du site archéologique sur le plateau volcanique de Corent, et ii) la Narse de la Sauvetat, un grand bassin hydromorphe dans la basse-plaine marno-calcaire située au pied du versant sud-ouest du plateau.Des sondages géoarchéologiques ont été réalisés dans la cuvette du Lac du Puy, conduisant à la découverte d’une batterie d’un millier de silos de stockage du premier âge du Fer. Les résultats de cette campagne de terrain ont également permis de reconstruire le cadre chrono-stratigraphique et les grands traits de l’évolution hydro-morpho-sédimentaire et pédologique de la cuvette. L’analyse géoarchéologique multi-proxys de plusieurs carottes sédimentaires a fourni davantage de précisions sur l’évolution environnementale du Lac du Puy. L’impact anthropique y est nettement perceptible au long de cinq millénaires et apparaît depuis le Néolithique comme le principal facteur de contrôle de l’évolution paléoenvironnementale du bassin jusqu’à son anthropisation complète.En contrebas de ce site de plateau, dans le bassin de la Narse de la Sauvetat, l’étude géomorphologique a révélé que la cuvette hydromorphe dérive de la fermeture par un glissement de terrain d’une paléo-vallée qui était située au pied du versant sud-ouest du puy de Corent. Cet évènement s’est probablement produit au début du Subboréal. Les grandes phases de l’évolution de la cuvette ont pu être reconstruites, d’un fonctionnement alluvial au Pléistocène Supérieur jusqu’à des dynamiques hydromorphes et palustres, sous l’effet du contrôle aval exercé par le barrage de la vallée à partir du Néolithique Final, mettant en évidence le fort potentiel paléoenvironnemental de la cuvette. L’analyse géoarchéologique multi-proxys de trois carottes sédimentaires, combinée aux résultats d’analyses malacologiques externes à cette thèse, a permis de retracer l’évolution environnementale de l’ensemble de la partie basse de la cuvette hydromorphe entre le Néolithique Final et le début du Moyen-âge.Les résultats obtenus dans le Lac du Puy et la Narse de la Sauvetat ont été intégrés dans le système morpho-sédimentaire plus large de l’ensemble du plateau et de ses marges entre 3000 BC et 0 AD, puis mis en perspective géographique et temporelle à l’échelle de l’Europe occidentale nord-alpine. L’évolution du système socio-environnemental de Corent et de Limagne méridionale au premier millénaire BC a été analysée en détail, en discutant le rôle des phénomènes de proto-urbanisation dans le forçage des systèmes morpho-sédimentaires qui marque l’entrée dans l’anthropocène. / This thesis presents the results of a multi-proxy geoarchaeological study of how anthropogenic forces and climate have shaped the evolution of the landscapes of the plateau of Corent (Auvergne, France) from the Neolithic to Roman period. A detailed geomorphological map of the study area was constructed based on LiDAR data and fieldwork. Two areas were selected for geoarchaeological analysis: i) the Lac du Puy, a small pond located within the archaeological site of the plateau of Corent, and ii) la Narse de la Sauvetat, a larger hydromorphic basin in the calcareous lowlands, at the foot of the southwestern slopes of the plateau.Geoarchaeological survey in the Lac du Puy revealed an expansive group of over one thousand storage pits, dating from the Hallstatt period. The results of fieldwork permitted the construction of a chrono-stratigraphic framework and allowed a reconstruction of the main phases of the hydro-morpho-sedimentary and pedological evolution of the basin. Multi-proxy geoarchaeological analysis of sedimentary cores provided additional information concerning palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Lac du Puy. Anthropogenic impact is clearly discernable throughout five millennia starting in the Neolithic, and is identified as the main driver of the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the basin until its final destruction by human activity.In the lowlands, geomorphological analysis of la Narse de la Sauvetat revealed that the hydromorphic basin is the result of the closure of a palaeovalley by a massive landslide issuing from the southwestern slopes of the Puy de Corent. Geomorphological and stratigraphic evidence indicates that the isolation of the basin likely occurred at the beginning of the Subboreal. Lithostratigraphic analysis was used to reconstruct the main phases of the evolution of the basin from its initial alluvial phase in the late Pleistocene, through to its hydromorphic and palustrine dynamics from the late Neolithic, highlighting the strong palaeoenvironmental potential of its sedimentary record. Multi-proxy geoarchaeological analysis of three sedimentary cores from the basin, combined with results of external malacological analysis, allowed a reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the basin from the late Neolithic to the early Middle Ages.Results obtained from the Lac du Puy and La Narse de la Sauvetat were integrated into the broader morpho-sedimentary system of the plateau and its margins for the period between 3000 BC and 1 AD. The geographic and temporal perspective was then further enlarged through comparison with temperate Western Europe data. The evolution of the socio-environmental system of Corent and southern Limagne was analysed in detail for the first millennium BC. Finally the role of proto-urbanization processes in the forcing of morpho-sedimentary systems is examined, marking their entry into the anthropocene.

The study (MS, diploma thesis) is based on more than 1500 rudist samples from the Upper Cretaceous sediments of localities Písečný vrch and Na Stínadlech (near Teplice). Investigated samples come mainly from the collection of A. H. Fassel and were collected at the end of the 19th century, currently stored in the Regional museum in Teplice and National museum in Prague. The rudist shells were determined by generic and species levels, including five genera and eight species. The stratigraphic age of both localities has been a subject of discussion since the second half of the 19th century. In the recent decades, the opinion on the lower turonian age prevailed. However, five of the eight species present in the studied localities demonstrate the upper cenomanian age of the assemblages, making them probably the oldest known rudist-corals assemblages of its kind. The palaeoecological analysis and the ecological relationships proposal for the studied localities is based on the research in literature on palaeoecology and evolution of the rudists, also presented in the study. High Sampling Resolution Luminescence Dating of Loess in Brittany, France / Luminiscensdatering av loess med hög provtagningsupplösning i Bretagne, Frankrike

Aeolian dust is an important but poorly understood component of the climate system, which both responds to and drives global climate. Recently, dust produced at the high latitudes is also gaining attention as a possible contributor to the atmospheric dust load. However, little is known about its past dynamics and well­ dated records close to the former ice margins at the higher latitudes are scarce. Loess in Brittany region, France, is, therefore a valuable archive of the past dustiness, climate and landscape dynamics close to the former margins of the British–Irish and Fennoscandian ice sheets. However, knowledge of the timing of its deposition and accumulation dynamics, based on a detailed and independent chronology, is mostly lacking. Here, loess stratigraphy at the newly established site Primel Trégastel (Brittany, France) is presented. Loess deposits are dated in detail by optically stimulated luminescence of quartz. Moreover, to account for a variable past dust activity, loess sedimentation and dust mass accumulation rates are derived from a continuous Bayesian age model. Furthermore, this thesis tests the hypothesis of whether the same wind and dust accumulation patterns from the north of the Channel system can also be traced south the English Channel. Luminescence ages and Bayesian age modelling results show a phase of enhanced dust accumulation between 22.5–25.5 ka, coinciding with the Heinrich event 2 and Greenlandstadial 3. Although the proposed model with two phases of the enhanced dust accumulation between 25–19 ka does not exactly match the record at Primel Trégastel, the hypothesis of the glacial dynamics, associate glacial lake drainage and linked atmospheric circulation reorganisation controlling the loess accumulation in western France cannot be rejected with certainty. / Eoliskt damm är en viktig, men illa förstådd komponent av klimatsystemet som både reagerar på, såväl som driver, det globala klimatet. Nyligen har damm som producerats vid höga latituder också fått uppmärksamhet som ett möjligt bidrag till den atmosfäriska dammbelastningen. Kunskapen är dock liten gällande dess föregående dynamik och väl daterade uppgifter om tidigare isgränser vid höga latituder är fortfarande undermåliga. Loess i regionen Bretagne i Frankrike är därför ett värdefullt arkiv av tidigare dammhalter, klimat och landskapets dynamik nära de tidigare gränserna av de Brittiskt­-Irländska och Fennoskandiska istäckena. Men kunskap om timingen mellan dess deposition och ackumuleringsdynamik, baserad på en detaljerad och självständig kronologi, saknas till stor del. Här kan loess stratigrafi, vid den nyligen etablerade utgrävningsplatsen Primel Trégastel (Bretagne, Frankrike), presenteras. Loess avlagringar är daterade i detalj genom optiskt stimulerad luminescens av kvarts. Ytterligare, för att tamed variationen av dammets aktivitet i beräkningarna, är loess sedimentering och ackumuleringstakt av dammets massa härledda från en kontinuerlig Bayesiansk åldersmodell. Vidare så testar detta arbete hypotesen om huruvida samma vindar och ackumuleringsmönster av damm, som ses norr on kanalsystemet, även kan ses söder om den engelska kanalen. Resultat från luminescensåldrar och Bayesiansk åldersmodellering visar en fas av ökad dammackumulering mellan 22.5–25.5 ka, något som sammanfaller med Heinrich händelse 2 och Grönland stadial 3. Även om den föreslagna modellen med två faser av den ökade dammackumuleringen mellan 25–19 ka inte exakt överensstämmer med uppgifterna från Primel Trégastel, så kan inte hypotesen rörande den glaciala dynamiken med tillhörande dränering av glaciärsjöar och den sammankopplade atmosfäriska cirkulativa omorganisationen som kontrollerar loess ackumulering i västra Frankrike avvisas med säkerhet.

Magnetic Susceptibility of Ferrimagnetic Minerals and its Connection with Fe-Metabolising Microbial Community

Interaction between minerals and bacteria represents an abundant natural phenomenon depictingnature's complexity and how abiotic and biotic components are intertwined. This interaction is evidentin modern-day ecosystems, and it significantly shaped the early stage of life on Earth by influencinggeochemical processes. Evidence of this interaction includes microbialites. In the first part, this master's thesis explores the impact of iron-redox bacteria on the magneticproperties of synthetic and natural magnetic materials, with significant implications for understandingearly Earth conditions and paleoenvironments. In the second part, the magnetic signal recorded in thesediment core from the Baltic Sea is examined to identify the ferrimagnetic minerals responsible for itand their origin (biotic versus abiotic). A better understanding of the origin of ferrimagnetic mineralsallows for a more conclusive interpretation of palaeomagnetism and palaeoenvironmental history of theBaltic Sea. In both parts, the change in magnetic susceptibility was used as the main method to depictmechanisms of mineral-bacteria interaction. Experiment with iron-oxidising bacteria (Leptothrix mobilis) showed a decrease in magneticsusceptibility over time, consistent with the oxidation of solid iron/magnetic materials. However, asmall difference between bacteria culture and control samples points out that the decrease is caused byabiotic oxidation rather than bacterial. Supporting evidence is the absence of viable cells in all bacterialsamples, suggesting that L. mobilis did not grow in these experiments. In experiments with iron-reducing bacteria (Geobacter sulfurreducens), magnetic susceptibility increased by 7%. Controlsamples with the same reducing media did not show a change in magnetic susceptibility, indicating thatthe susceptibility change is caused by bacterial reduction of iron oxides. Magnetic susceptibility signal obtained in the sediment core from the Baltic Sea indicates rapidlyoxidising, ferrimagnetic nanoparticles in two organic-rich sapropels. The pattern of the signal isconsistent with the presence of bacterial greigite (magnetofossils). Contrary to previous research, nomagnetic enhancement is observed in these layers.  Magnetic susceptibility, as a non-destructive and relatively simple method, may serve as a significantindicator of mineral-bacterial interactions. Combining it with other techniques and methods can providedeeper insights into the mechanisms behind these interactions. This approach can reveal the importanceof these interactions on early Earth, enhance our understanding of palaeomagnetism, and unveil possibleconditions of ancient environments.

Indonesia merupakan salah satu wilayah yang memiliki keanekaragaman terbesar, dan pada saat yang bersamaan juga merupakan salah satu Negara yang mempunyai jumlah penduduk terpadat di dunia. Seiring dengan sejarah, pengaruh dari aktivitas manusia pada suatu daerah menjadi semakin kuat. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengakses peranan manusia terhadap perubahan lingkungan. Penelitian kami difokuskan pada rekonstruksi pola vegetasi di masa lampau, perubahan lingkungan dan interaksi antara manusia dan lingkungan yang tercermin dalam sedimen laut di perairan Indonesia. Dua macam pendekatan yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah: polen (serbuik sari), yang berasal dari darat dan diharapkan bisa memberikan informasi yang beragam tentang vegetasi dan dinamika penggunaan lahan, dan organic dinoflagelata yang berasal dari lingkungan laut dan merefleksikan perubahan parameter air secara kuantitatif (misal. SST, SSS) dan kualitatif (mis: kondisi tropic dilihat dari segi makro-elemen utama dan oksigen terlarut dalam air). Selain itu, arang mikro dipelajari untuk mendapatkan data mengenai sejarah kebakaran di wilayah tersebut dan untuk memperoleh data tambahan untuk interpretasi polen dan data dinoflagelata. Penelitian dilakukan di dua situs sebagai perbandingan: pertama, di wilayah Jawa yang padat penduduk dengan sejarah panjang dari dampak aktivitas manusia yang menghasilkan lanskap pertanian yang luas, dan yang kedua, di wilayah Kalimantan Selatan dengan kepadatan penduduk yang tidak terlalu tinggi dan tidak banyak perubahan akibat pengaruh aktivitas manusia dan masih merupakan vegetasi alami. Metode yang digunakan, palinologi laut memerlukan perhatian khusus dalam interpretasi data. Faktor pengendapan polen adalah sangat penting, terutama untuk daerah-daerah dengan pengaruh kuat dari angin dan arus laut seperti wilayah Indonesia dimana sistem iklim secara keseluruhan didorong sebagian oleh pergantian musim. Untuk mendapatkan beberapa pemikiran mengenai transportasi sedimen di wilayah ini, kami mempelajari dan membahas secara rinci perbedaan jumlah polen yang dikumpulkan pada kondisi musim hujan yang berbeda serta selama waktu perpindahan musim. Subyek manuskrip pertama kami adalah kemelimpahan dan komposisi taksa modern polen dan spora yang didapat dari sedimen yang terakumulasi di Samudera India sebelah barat daya Jawa. Hasil yang diperoleh digunakan untuk interpretasi lebih lanjut dari fosil polen laut. Sejarah intensifikasi penggunaan lahan dan perubahan vegetasi lebih dari 3500 tahun yang lalu yang diperoleh dari dinoflagelata dan kumpullan polen dari sedimen laut dipresentasikan dalam jurnal yang kedua. Studi ini didasarkan pada perbandingan dua core laut dari lepas Laut Jawa dekat Kalimantan Barat (Sungai Jelai) and bagian timur laut Jawa (Sungai/Bengavan Solo). Pada manuskrip yang ketiga, hasil ini diperbandingkan dengan sedimen core dari lepas pantai yang diambil dari bagian hulu sungai Pembuang. Studi ini membahas mengenai hasil analisa geokimia dan analisa dinoflagelata dalam cakupan paleoekologi dan paleoenvironment. Manuskrip kelima membahas tentang keragaman polen dalam core sedimen laut dari wilayah Indonesia. Studi ini merangkum pengetahuan yang diperoleh selama meneliti core sedimen dari Laut Jawa dan dari studi perangkap sedimen di Samudera Hindia. Dalam bentuk atlas polen, kami memberikan hasil analisis secara rinci dari daftar taksa polen dan dilengkapi dengan foto mikro pada tingkat fokus yang berbeda. Hasil keseluruhan dari penelitian ini akan memberikan kontribusi pada pengetahuan tentang dinamika ekosistem dan sejarah alam di wilayah Indonesia dan dapat membantu investigasi paleoekologi dan paleo-iklim di masa depan secara lebih rinci.

50,000 years of vegetation and climate change in the Namib Desert / Changement du climat et de la végétation dans le Désert du Namib au cours des 50 000 dernières années

Cette thèse présente les données des pollens et micro-charbons fossiles couvrant la période des 50 000 dernières années à partir de sites sélectionnés transversalement nord-sud du désert de Namib. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, on utilise le rock hyrax middens, l’accumulation des boulettes et des urines fossilisés du Procavia capensis, représentant une excellente archive pour archives pour la préservation des pollens et micro-charbons à long-terme. Trois sites des hyrax middens ont été sélectionnés pour l'analyse: au sud du désert de Namib (Pella), la marge est des dunes de sable de Namib (Zizou) et le centre de la Namib (Spitzkoppe). En plus, le régime pluvial de ces sites se caractérise par une forte variabilité annuelle et interannuelle. En conséquence, tous ces sites se situent au long de l’écotone du Désert et du biome Nama-Karoo, ainsi qu'à l’est (biome de Savane). Alors que ces sites sont répertoriés dans des écosystèmes similaires, l’écotone, lui, est considéré comme une zone potentiellement très sensible au changement du système climatique régional. Un intérêt spécifique de ces enregistrements terrestres est pour évaluer s’ils corroborent ou s’opposent avec les résultats provenant ceux des sédiments marins de la côte namibienne, en particulier la conclusion : l’abondance des taxa dominants du Fynbos Biome du Cape peut indiquer significativement une expansion vers le nord de la flore du Cape pendant les périodes plus froides glaciaires. Selon les sites d’études sélectionnées, les conclusions principales de ce travail sont les suivantes:Les hyrax middens de Pella fournissent le premier enregistrement pollinique continué au sud du désert de Namib durant la période des 50 000 dernières années. Ces données polliniques ont permis de reconstruire le changement de la végétation et d'estimer la température et l'aridité. Les résultats indiquent que la période glaciaire se caractérise par une augmentation de la disponibilité de l'eau sur le site par rapport à l'Holocène. Les changements de la température et de l'évapotranspiration potentielle semblent avoir joué un rôle important dans la détermination de l'équilibre hydrologique.L'enregistrement de Zizou hyrax midden met en évidence des changements de la végétation à la marge l'est des dunes de sable depuis 38 000 ans cal BP. La végétation de la période glaciaire se caractérise par les pourcentages relativement élevés des Astéracées pollen, et plus particulièrement par des taxa du climat plus froid: Stoebe et Artemisia¬-type. En accord avec les données de Pella, le réchauffement au début de l'Holocène indiqué par la dominance de pollen des graminées dans l'assemblage pollinique suggère une expansion du biome de Désert.Les hyrax middens de Spitzkoppe enregistrent les changements de la végétation dans le centre du désert de Namib au cours des 32 000 dernières années. Les résultats sont globalement cohérents en comparant aux autres enregistrements terrestres dans la région. L'analyse de ces données n'est cependant pas encore terminée.Dans tous ces sites, une variabilité significative a été observée à la fois dans la dernière période glaciaire et l'Holocène. Les conditions plus froides de l'ère glaciaire semblent être caractérisées par une augmentation de la disponibilité de l'eau le long de la totalité de notre zone d'étude. Au contraire des résultats provenant des carottes marines, nos enregistrements indiquent aucune expansion de la végétation de Fynbos biome, et seulement des traces de Restionaceae pollen dans le site extrêmement au sud à Pella (pas plus de 1%), mais aucun trace de ce pollen n'ayant été observé à Zizou ainsi qu’à Spitzkoppe. / This thesis presents fossil pollen and microcharcoal data during the last 50,000 years from a north-south transect of the Namib Desert. The arid environment of the Namib precludes the development of permanent wetlands, and as a result few palaeoenvironmental records exist from the region. In this study, we employ rock hyrax middens – fossilised accumulations of the faecal pellets and urine of the Procavia capensis. Hyrax middens from three sites were selected for analysis: the southern Namib (Pella), the eastern margin of Namib Sand Sea (Zizou), and the central Namib (Spitzkoppe). The results from these terrestrial sites are the extent to which they may corroborate or conflict with findings from pollen records obtained from marine sediments of the Namibian coast.The Pella hyrax middens provide the first continuous pollen record from the southern Namib Desert since the last 50,000 years, and are used to reconstruct vegetation change and quantitative estimates of temperature and aridity. Results indicate that the last glacial period was characterised by increased water availability relative to the Holocene. Changes in temperature and potential evapotranspiration appear to have played a significant role in determining the hydrologic balance. The record can be considered in two sections: 1) the last glacial period, when low temperatures favoured the development of more mesic Nama-Karoo vegetation at the site, with periods of increased humidity concurrent with increased coastal upwelling, both responding to lower global/regional temperatures; and 2) the Holocene, high temperatures and potential evapotranspiration resulted in increased aridity and an expansion of the Desert Biome.Considered in the context of discussions of forcing mechanisms of regional climate change and environmental dynamics, the results from Pella stand in clear contrast with many inferences of terrestrial environmental change derived from regional marine records. Observations of a strong precessional signal and interpretations of increased humidity during phases of high local summer insolation in the marine records are not consistent with the data from Pella. Similarly, while high percentages of Restionaceae pollen has been observed in marine sediments during the last glacial period, they do not exceed 1% of the assemblage from Pella, indicating that no significant expansion of the Fynbos Biome has occurred during the last 50,000 years.The Zizou hyrax midden highlights vegetation changes on the eastern margin of the Namib Sand Sea since 38,000 cal BP. Results show the different vegetation compositions between the last glacial period and the Holocene. Glacial vegetation characterised with relatively high percentages of Asteraceae pollen, particularly cool climate taxa such as Stoebe and Artemisia types. Similar to the data from Pella, with the onset of Holocene warming grass pollen comes to dominate the assemblage, suggesting an expansion of the Desert Biome. We suggest that the climate during the last glacial period was more humid, and supported the development of shrubs/small trees. Arid conditions during the Holocene saw the depletion of this resource, and the development of grasslands that could exploit the rare rains that the region experiences today. In common with the Pella record, no elements of the Cape flora are found in the Zizou middens.The Spitzkoppe hyrax middens record vegetation changes in the central Namib during the last 32,000 years. The last glacial vegetation compositions composed of Olea, Artemisia¬-type, Stoebe¬-type and grasses. In the Holocene, the arboreal taxa such as Olea was replaced by others like Eculea, Dombeya, Commiphora, and Croton¬-type with relative higher percentage of grasses at early Holocene.
