Reproductive partitioning among polyandrous alpha and beta pale chanting-goshawk males

This study investigates the reproductive and parental roles of polyandrous male pale chanting-goshawks, Melierax canorus, and speculatively reviews the fitness outcomes of different skew and relatedness scenarios. The study was conducted over five years in the Little Karoo, South Africa. Although, polyandrous males participated equally in building nests, provisioning prey and incubating, in the fertility window the dominant alpha males copulated 31–5 days before the females laid, whereas subordinate beta males only copulated 5–3 days before laying. If this copulation timing by alpha males was indicative of a high reproductive skew, alpha males breeding as full sibs could skew paternity in their favour (ratio 68:32) and produce 0.69 offspring equivalents. Under this scenario, they compensated beta males with indirect fitness benefits by allowing them to produce 0.54 offspring equivalents, equal to monogamous males. Alternatively, if beta males controlled reproduction while breeding with non-relatives under a high skew scenario, they would have to restrain themselves to avoid eviction and produce 0.28 offspring equivalents to allow the fitness of alpha males at least to equal that of monogamous males. I suggest that alpha males and their females altered their reproductive roles to accommodate beta males, thereby increasing their inclusive fitness, whereas beta males tolerated subordination to acquire reproductive skills that non-breeder males do not have access to.

Representations of Revolution and Revolutionaries in Early Twentieth Century Russian Literature

The representation of Revolution and revolutionaries develops as one of the main themes in Russian literary texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It would not be an overstatement to say that most active writers during this time referred to these themes in their works. These themes developed in consort with the historical and political developments occurring within the country. The literature of the twentieth century led to a culmination in the understanding of this complex topic. This thesis will present an analysis of several types of Revolutionary characters and their concepts of what Revolution is and should be. It will present an overview of Revolution's origin and development as a background of early twentieth century Russian literary works. The close reading of the selected twentieth century works will be discussed within the body of this thesis. In particular we will review Alexander Blok's poem The Twelve, Isaac Babel's collection of stories Red Cavalry, Vladimir Zazubrin's The Chip: A Story about a Chip and About Her, and Boris Savinkov's Pale Horse.

Application of Proteomics in Understanding Pale Soft and Exudative Condition in Broiler Breast Meat

This experiment was conducted to determine the differences in meat quality (cooking loss and shear force), descriptive sensory characteristics, consumer acceptance, and whole muscle proteomes between normal and Pale, Soft, and Exudative (PSE) broiler breast meat. Male Hubbard × Cobb 500 birds (n = 1,050) were raised in commercial houses. Prior to harvest, a sample of the broilers (n = 900) were subjected to short-term stress (38 °C for 2 h), and the remaining broilers (n = 150) were maintained at control conditions (21 °C for 2 h). From the stressed and control condition broilers, breast samples were characterized by pH24 and L*24 as normal (pH24 5.8-6.2, L*24 45-55) or PSE (pH24 5.4-5.7, L*24 55-65). Normal chicken breast meat had lower shear force values than PSE meat (P < 0.05). Based on sensory descriptive analysis, normal cooked chicken breast was more tender and juicier than PSE breast meat (P < 0.05). Consumer sensory analysis results indicated that 81% of consumer panelists liked normal breast meat whereas 62% of the panelists liked PSE breast meat. Whole muscle proteome profiling identified fifteen differentially abundant proteins (P < 0.05) in normal and PSE meat samples. Actin alpha, myosin heavy chain, phosphoglycerate kinase, creatine kinase M type, beta-enolase, carbonic anhydrase 2, proteasome subunit alpha, pyruvate kinase, and malate dehydrogenase were over-abundant in PSE meat whereas phosphoglycerate mutase-1, alpha-enolase, ATP-dependent 6-phosphofructokinase, and fructose 1, 6-bisphosphatase were over-abundant in normal meat. In addition, normal and PSE broiler breast meat were sampled from commercial plants and evaluated for meat quality attributes (pH, color, cooking loss, and tenderness) and their whole muscle proteome. Normal chicken breast meat had lower shear force values than PSE meat (P < 0.05). Proteome analysis revealed five differentially abundant proteins (P < 0.05) between the normal and PSE chicken breast samples. Glycolytic enzymes (beta-enolase and fructose-bisphosphate aldolase C) were over-abundant in PSE breast meat. Myofibrillar protein (myosin heavy chain) was over-abundant in PSE breast meat. In conclusion, results indicated that differences in proteome abundance could be related to the meat quality differences between normal and PSE breast meat.

Utilization of Deionized Water and Non-Meat Adjuncts to Combat Quality Issues in Boneless Cured Ham Associated with using Pale Raw Material

The effects of deionized water and PSE pork percentage on the quality of smoked deli ham and retorted pouched ham with and without non-meat adjuncts were evaluated. Product quality was determined through evaluation of water holding capacity, cooked color, protein-protein bind, and sensory quality. A randomized complete block design with either three or four replications was utilized to test treatment effects in three separate experiments. The retorting process showed the potential to reduce the effect of PSE meat on color that is present in raw material and smoked deli ham. In retorted ham, modified food starch and soy protein concentrate reduced (p<0.05) cook loss and starch improved color. Deionized water can be utilized to improve yields (1 %) in smoked deli hams, and 25 % pale pork can be used without negatively affecting (p>0.05) sensory or instrumental quality in a retorted pouched ham product. Modified food starch can also be utilized to increase yields in a retortable-pouched ham without significantly affecting sensory quality.

Pour dimensionner les liaisons entre pales et disques des roues de turbines, plusieurs méthodologies sont utilisées selon qu’elles s’appliquent en pré-dimensionnement, en dimensionnement et optimisation, ou en suivi de fabrication. Dans tous les cas, elles ont pour objectif de vérifier que les fonctions des attaches pales – disques sont assurées pour la combinaison de variables d’entrée étudiée. Ce mémoire de thèse propose des modèles et des outils pour différents niveaux d’étude. Au niveau « expertise », trois sujets ont été traités : l’évaluation de la probabilité de montage des pales, le calcul de durée de vie en fluage des filets d’interpale, et l’estimation de la durée de vie en fatigue oligocyclique. Au niveau « intermédiaire », une chaîne de calcul automatisée des attaches pales – disques a été développée en s’appuyant sur les observations précédentes. Au niveau « global », des plans d’expériences lancés sur la chaîne de calcul ont permis d’obtenir une base de données exploitée pour construire des métamodèles. Ceux-ci ont été finalement intégrés dans une maquette d’outil d’aide à la décision exploitable en pré-dimensionnement et en suivi de fabrication / In most turbine engines, blades are mounted on discs by mechanical attachments called "fir-tree links". These interfaces transmit loads up to 50,000 N at temperatures between 550 and 750°C. Their resistance to various stresses must be ensured throughout the engine life in service. They should also allow the blades installation and removal during the various maintenance operations. To design and size these attachments, several methodologies are used. They are characterized by various levels of relevance, time and implementation costs. In all cases, their objective is to verify that the functions of the blade – disc link will be insured for the current combination of input variables. These thesis works have sought to propose models and tools for different levels of study. At the “expertise” level, which corresponds to the detailed study of potential link failures, three subjects were treated: blade mounting probability evaluation, disc teeth creep life calculation, low cycle fatigue life assessment of the links. For the "intermediate" level, an automated calculation chain was developed based on previous observations. At the "global" level, designs of experiments launched on the previous built calculation chain have furnished a database used next to build metamodels. These surrogate models were finally integrated into a decision support tool, dedicated to early design and production monitoring. For each case, industrial applications have been processed in order to evaluate the proposed methodologies

David Foster Wallace's communal middle ground

Throughout the course of this thesis, I argue that the prose of David Foster Wallace, specifically his posthumously published novel The Pale King, inhabits a middle ground between universal sincerity and the particularized authenticity of postmodern irony. I examine Lionel Trilling's definitions of sincerity and authenticity before moving toward an examination of the diverging critical response to Wallace's work, which, I argue, suggests that because so many critics have read his work as either inherently sincere or inherently authentic, his work inhabits a communal middle ground somewhere in between. To explain, I analyze Wallace's so-called manifesto of sincerity, "E Unibus Pluram: Television and U.S. Fiction," as well as other instances in interviews and conversations to develop a clearer understanding of what this middle ground consists of. Further, I analyze two passages in The Pale King in which characters seek to communicate moments of profound revelation. Though these characters finally fail to truly communicate these revelations, I argue that it is the communication itself that allows both communicator and listener, and thus both reader and writer, to experience a moment of, as Wallace puts it in The Pale King, "value for both sides, both people in the relation" (227). / Graduation date: 2012

“Cowboy, Paladin, Hero?”: Being Boys and Men in David Foster Wallace’s The Pale King

Often aligned with post-postmodernism, David Foster Wallace’s later work retreats from the ironic detachment and cynicism of postmodernism in favor of a more sincere approach to writing. This is especially evident in his posthumous novel, The Pale King, a work dealing with what it means to be human in the Information Age. After locating the novel’s setting within a recent history of American masculinity and work, this paper examines several of the novel’s male characters as they struggle to be fully realized boys and men, concluding that The Pale King is Wallace’s final statement that enduring the ennui of modern life is admirable, even heroic.

Optimisation des éoliennes à axe horizontal par l'utilisation de pales flexibles. / Horizontal-axis wind turbines optimization by the use of flexible blades

L’éolien est un secteur industriel en pleine expansion, qui joue un rôle fondamental dans le développement des énergies renouvelables. Cependant ces machines sont performantes sur une plage de fonctionnement étroite. Afin d’adapter l’éolienne aux changements de vent, une solution actuellement mise en place sur certaines éoliennes commerciales consiste à faire varier l’angle de calage (ie l’inclinaison) des pales au cours de son fonctionnement. Cette méthode de contrôle actif élargit la plage de hauts rendements ainsi que la plage de fonctionnement global, et améliore le démarrage de l’éolienne, mais elle n’augmente pas le rendement maximal atteint par une éolienne à angle de calage optimal fixé. Cependant la complexité́ de cette méthode ainsi que ses coûts de conception, de construction et de maintenance la rende inaccessible pour beaucoup d’éoliennes, en particulier celles de petite taille. Récemment des recherches se sont orientées vers un contrôle passif de l’angle de calage. Dans cette thèse nous examinons expérimentalement et théoriquement l’intérêt d’utiliser des pales flexibles suivant la corde sur une éolienne à axe horizontal. L’étude se concentre sur deux questions : - comprendre le mécanisme de reconfiguration de la pale flexible bio-inspirée : la déformation de la pale est due à la compétition entre les forces aérodynamiques, qui augmentent l’angle de calage moyen, et la force centrifuge qui le diminue. Ces effets sont gouvernés par deux nombres adimensionnés, respectivement le nombre de Cauchy et le nombre centrifuge. - qualifier et quantifier le gain en performances de l’éolienne : une flexibilité́ de pale modérée élargit la plage de fonctionnement, et augmente significativement le rendement de l’éolienne, expérimentalement jusqu’à 35% sur la plage de hauts rendements. Une procédure d’optimisation visant à déterminer le matériau optimal de la pale flexible est présentée. Ces gains obtenus en régime stationnaire sont conservés expérimentalement en moyenne en régime instationnaire. Deux temps caractéristiques sont identifiés : le temps de reconfiguration de la pale flexible et le temps de variation de la fréquence de rotation de l’éolienne / Wind energy is a rapidly growing branch of industry, playing a significant role in the development of renewable energies. However these machines are efficient only on a narrow working range. In order to adapt wind turbines to wind changes, some commercial machines are pitch controlled during rotation. This active control method extends the high-efficiency range and the total working range, and improves the starting phase, but it does not increase the maximum efficiency reached by a wind turbine with the fixed optimal pitch angle. However this method is complex and costly (design, construction, maintenance). Thus it becomes cost-effective only for large wind turbines. Research recently focused on passive pitch control. In this thesis, the contribution of chord wise flexible blades is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The thesis concentrates on: - the reconfiguration mechanism of the bio-inspired flexible blade : the deformation is the result of the competition between aerodynamic forces, which increase the pitch angle, and the centrifugal force, which reduces it. These two effects are governed by two dimensionless numbers, respectively the Cauchy number and the centrifugal number. - how to qualify and quantify the efficiency gains : a moderate flexibility extends the working range, and significantly increases wind turbine efficiency, up to 35% on the high-efficiency working range. An optimization procedure is presented, which aims at determining the optimal material to construct the blade. These improvements measured in steady regime are maintained on average when rotational speed is unsteady. Two characteristic times are identified: the reconfiguration time of the flexible blade and the time of variation of the rotational speed of the wind turbine
