Characterization of Internal Formaldehyde Production within The Pandora Spectrometer Instrument

Kocur, Nash Brinson 19 January 2021 (has links)
Formaldehyde (HCHO), plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry and is an indicator of atmospheric oxidation capacity and surface ozone photo chemistry. The Pandora Spectrometer Instruments are deployed within the NASA/ESA sponsored Pandonia Global Network designed for satellite validation of various gases in atmosphere (e.g. ozone, nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde). In addition, Pandoras are extensively used during national (e.g. DISCOVER-AQ, OWLETS, LISTOS) and international (CINDI, KORUS-AQ) field campaigns organized to better characterise air pollution and its distribution. Recently it was discovered and shown in prior research conducted by (Spinei et al. 2020), that Pandora measurements of atmospheric HCHO are impacted by HCHO produced within the telescope assembly due to temperature dependent off-gassing from the Delrin® plastic components. The purpose of the research covered in this thesis is to provide a methodology to correct total HCHO vertical column densities measured during the past field campaigns. The methodology developed through the course of this thesis is first tested on the Pandora simulated measurements derived from the surface concentration HCHO observations during KORUS-AQ (2016) field campaign. The derived correction using synthetic data shows that the proposed methodology is accurate within 30%. The second part of the thesis characterizes heat transfer processes within the telescope assembly to estimate internal temperature as a function of ambient meteorological conditions. Considering that the Pandora instruments have mostly identical design of their telescope assemblies heat transfer coefficients derived from one pandora are expected to be applicable to all Pandoras. Convective heat transfer coefficients were derived at VT wind tunnel as a function of wind speed and telescope assembly position. Internally generated power was measured for several different instruments and averaged at $2.15 pm 0.38$ W. Total long wave emissivity was calculated at 0.63. Surface absorptivities were estimated from the material properties. Semi-empirically derived model is proposed to estimate the internal temperature based on the heat transfer parameters, ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar flux, wind speed and wind direction. The correlation between the estimated and measured internal temperatures is 0.93 R^2. Finally, the methodology is applied to the actual HCHO data collected during the KORUS-AQ campaign and the results are compared to concurrent in-situ measurements made aboard DC-8 aircraft for eight days in the months of May and June 2016. / Master of Science / Formaldehyde (HCHO), is a key indicator of atmospheric health and because of this, it is an important topic for study. The Pandora Sun Photometer is a low cost instrument developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight center. It has been used in the study of HCHO in various field campaigns. During the Korea-United States Air Quality Study (KORUS-AQ), the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS) and the Ozone Water-Land Environmental Transition Study (OWLETS) the Pandora instrument design included a component manufactured from Delrin® plastic. It has recently been found to produce HCHO relative to the change in temperature. Due to the location of this component inside the telescope assembly of the Pandora instrument, the HCHO produced by the plastic was incorporated into the data invalidating the results. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a methodology for analyzing this issue through quantification of the HCHO produced by the plastic. An analysis is conducted to provide the ability to quantify the temperature internal to the telescope assembly. In addition, three methods are discussed for applying this to then quantify the proportion of HCHO that had been added to the measurements. Finally, the methods are applied to data collected during the KORUS-AQ campaign and the results are compared to a reliable set of data performed by a different instrument showing the improved agreement on eight days in the months of May and June.

Mythes et fictions en histoire de l'art : histoire de la réception de l'image de Jean Cousin et étude critique des interprétations de l'Eva prima Pandora / Myths and fictions in history of art : history of the reception of the image of Jean Cousin and critical study of the interpretations of the Eva prima Pandora

Faure, Agnès 20 September 2013 (has links)
Jean Cousin has generated various forms of reception, reveling the discursive stakes in the historiographers. Also, the critical analysis of the texts which were produced on the Eva prima Pandora brings to the foreground several problematics inherent to the process of the interpretation of works of art, to the discourse produced on painting. From an incomplete documentary context, which concerns as much the painter as his painting, the authors created revealing fictions of their methodological orientation and of the expectation of their period of expression. We will thus wear a critical look at the mythical construction of the image of the artist that took place in the differents texts devoted to the life and the works of Jean Cousin. In the same way, through the semantic propositions that have been made on the painting, we will highlight the theoretical and the methodological presuppositions of the discurse produced by the interpreters, in order to show the limits of their approach.Leaving of this report, taking into account the differents tracks of reflexion recently opened by the history of art, we will study the Eva prima Pandora by paying our attention to de SEE, to the process of picturial creation, to the nature of intentions of Jean Cousin while painting the Eva prima Pandora.

Decoupling Tree-Ring Signatures of Climate Variation, Fire, and Insect Outbreaks in Central Oregon

Pohl, Kelly A., Hadley, Keith S., Arabas, Karen B. January 2006 (has links)
Dendroecological methods play a critical role in developing our understanding of forest processes by contributing historical evidence of climate variability and the temporal characteristics of disturbance. We seek to contribute to these methods by developing a research protocol for decoupling radial-growth signatures related to climate, fire, and insect outbreaks in central Oregon. Our methods are based on three independent, crossdated tree-ring data sets: 1) a 545-year tree-ring climate reconstruction, 2) a 550-year fire history, and 3) a 250-year pandora moth outbreak history derived from host (Pinus ponderosa) and non-host (Abies grandis-Abies concolor) tree-ring chronologies. Based on these data, we use visual criteria (marker and signature rings), statistical comparisons, and Superposed Epoch Analysis (SEA) to identify the timing of growth anomalies and establish the temporal relationships between drought, climate variation (ENSO and PDO), fire events, and pandora moth (Coloradia pandora) outbreaks. Our results show pandora moth outbreaks generally coincide with periods of below-average moisture, whereas fire in central Oregon often follows a period of wetter than average conditions. Fire events in central Oregon appear to be related to shifts in hemispheric climate variability but the relationship between fire and pandora moth outbreaks remains unclear.

Effects of Pandora Moth Outbreaks on Ponderosa Pine Wood Volume

Speer, James H., Holmes, Richard L. January 2004 (has links)
Coloradia pandora (Blake) is a phytophagous insect that defoliates Pinus ponderosa (Dougl. ex Laws.) in south-central Oregon. Little is known about the extent of damage this insect inflicts upon its host trees during an outbreak. In this paper, we present stem analyses on four dominant Pinus ponderosa trees that enable us to determine the amount of volume lost during each Coloradia pandora outbreak on this site for the past 450 years. We found that on average an outbreak inhibits radial growth so that an individual tree produces 0.057 m³ less wood volume than the potential growth for the duration of an individual outbreak. A total of 0.549 m³ of growth per tree was inhibited by 10 outbreaks during the lifetime of the trees, which, in this stand, equates to 9.912 m³/ha (1,700 board feet/acre) of wood suppressed over the last 450 years throughout the stand. Our results do not support previous findings of a lag in suppression onset between the canopy of the tree versus the base. Crossdating of stem analysis samples is paramount to definitively examine the potential for a lagged response throughout the

Epiklisis: Fassung für Bassflöte, Klarinette und Schlagzeug: 1996/2007

Reinhold, Steffen 27 April 2022 (has links)
