The rhetorical function of the parable discourse in Matthew 13

Kim, Jae Soo 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1996. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with a reinvention of rhetorical criticism and its application to the parable discourse. The first part of this study examines the theoretical background of rhetoric, and shows that rhetoric emerged as a disciplinary discourse after mythos and logos, and was used as the first systematic hermeneutical method. Rhetoric has developed in two directions: influence and system. Influence study keeps to the tradition of classical rhetoric, while system study covers the system of rhetoric by integrating classical rhetoric with modern human and social sciences. Through this process, rhetorical criticism has been established as a theory and a method for biblical study. Its focus has shifted from rhetoric restrained to rhetoric revalued/reinvented, a shift toward social/practical criticism from hermeneutics. Moreover, rhetorical criticism has begun to treat text as a dialogic, collaborate art or social activity rather than as a mere instrument of persuasion in the monologic scheme of speaker-message-audience, and occupies a prime position in biblical studies in the mode of either one-dimensional or a comprehensive multi-dimensional approach. It is clear that there has been a shift in the application of rhetorical criticism from the performance of rhetorical discourse to its archaeology (inventio). The second part investigates the parable discourse. I suggest that Jesus' parables are net rhetorical discourses of either the dominant Jewish or the dominant Hellenistic-Roman culture. Rather, it is a rhetorical discourse of the Christian subculture. In addition, Jesus' parables in Matthew 13 are not merely grouped but woven into a textus which has a rhetorical structure centred on a basic unit (chreia) to be elaborated. The parable discourse thus takes the pattern of chreia elaboration, and occupies the representative position in Matthew. Against this background, this thesis formulates dialogic rhetoric, as a mode of reinvented rhetoric which deals with invention, for studying the rhetorical function of the parable discourse in Matt 13. Dialogic rhetoric combines Burkean pentadic criticism, Bakthinean dialogic and the social scientific approach. This method differs from the recent historico-critical reading, the semiotic reading, the pragmatic reading in the study of the parable discourse, and also from the structural study carried out by discourse (colon), chiastic and triadic analysis. Dialogic rhetorical criticism has two dimensions. Centripetal rhetoric investigates various rhetorical strategies such as chreia elaboration, figures of dialogism, honour and shame, spatial arrangement, and dyadic personality. Multiple scenes, agents, acts, agencies and purposes in the parable discourse provide a special opportunity for Burkean critique. Centrifugal rhetoric examines the relationship between the parable discourse and two groups of discourses. The first group includes Man 12:46-50 and Matt 13:54-58 which frame the parable discourse, and the second comprises Jesus' other great discourses which, together with the parable discourse, provide key elements within the chiasm of Matthew's Gospel. In final assessment, I define the nature of Christian culture as represented in the parable discourse in terms of response to the world. The parable discourse configures conversionist, revolutionist and gnostic- manipulationist responses, particularly to the Hellenistic-Roman world of the first century. Therefore, I propose that the parable discourse has the function of separating the disciples from the crowds, and then promoting the building of community. Retoriese kritiek, hetsy as 'n enkelvoudige of 'n omvattende benadering, beklee dus 'n eersterangse posisie in die Bybelwetenskap.

Rekontextualizace a aktualizace vybraných Ježíšových podobenství pro účely katecheze / Recontextualisation and Actualisation of Selected Parables of Jesus for the Purpose of Catechism

Válková, Vendula January 2016 (has links)
Thesis deals with rekontextualization and actualisation of Jesus's parables. The methodological part describes the catechetical methods and possibilities of cooperation with selected sciences such as didactics, pedagogy, psychology and hermeneutics. Moreover there are discussed concepts such as allegory, exegesis, metaphor and metonymy. Particular text dealing with the parables of the New Testament contains a characteristic of parable as a literary form, its origin, significance and its construction order. Parables are selected particularly in the context of Matthew's gospel. The thesis functions on the basis of synchronic methodology as well as diachronic one.

Henochova podobenství a nejstarší tradice o Ježíšovi / Enoch Parables and Oldest Traditions about Jesus

Cielontko, Dávid January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with an examination of influence of the Parables of Enoch on the oldest Jesus traditions. The presupposition of this examination is chronological setting of these traditions. The core of this thesis is an analysis of a selected motive in the Parables of Enoch and also in Jesus traditions. This motive is a figure of the Son of Man, which is important for both of compared materials. Then we will try to propose a possible influence of some eschatological ideas from the Parables on Jesus himself. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

To this effect, eight parables have been selected, all of them with a well-defined narrative structure and in which there could be detected some simulacra of man s action in his search for certain values that, according to Christian moralization, will take him closer or farther from God s Kingdom. Besides the parable speech, other speeches in the Gospels shall also be examined so that out of this number the passions of Christ Himself will be inferred; such passions will lead him to build up his éthos, that is, his character traces. By emphasizing passional and not reasonable matters in order to obtain divine grace, Jesus ideology dialogs, in a polemical way, with religious authorities of his time, which turns his speech into a field for conflicts.

Edson Ponick 20 March 2014 (has links)
This research on childrens theology analyzes the content and form of the theological reflections produced and raised by a group of children interacting with biblical stories in a school context. Although based on participatory research, both the execution of the project and the analysis of the generated data are grounded on the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer, particularly his considerations on the other, the hermeneutic circle, language, games and prejudices. Over a semester we held meetings with children in which different strategies for talking about the parables of Jesus were applied. The paper starts out by outlining what characterizes this child that addresses us today, in a dialogue supported by contributions from several childhood studies. It presents the child as an agent of post-modernity and discusses his/her participation in the consumer society. It then turns to theologies that allow for differentiated and more inclusive approaches to the Christian faith, while also highlighting some very diversified experiences of theology with children in other countries. The research demonstrates that the hermeneutical interpretation of the data arising from the talks reveals an ecologic concern with the environment as Gods creation, an awareness regarding people that are excluded from our society, as well as openness and honesty to raise questions and present arguments. The thesis maintains that the dynamic and joyful participation of the children typifies the meetings as appropriate occasions for the children to make their own discoveries, reflections and theological productions.

Bohatství v Lukášově evangeliu / Wealth in the Gospel of Luke

Vlk, Jaromír January 2021 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to impart a comprehensive view of the topic of "wealth," as presented by Luke in his gospel. The first chapter provides a general view of the notion of property and wealth, as passed on to us first by the Old Testament (OT) and subsequently by the New Testament (NT). The following chapter deals with a narrower selection of texts followed in the third chapter by the main part of this thesis - a detailed linguistic and literary analysis ("exegesis"). The selected texts comprise a set of several parables that touch upon the theme of "property" (as well as attitudes towards it). These are, in particular, the parable of the rich man and the barns (L 12,13-21), the parable of the lost coin. (L 15,8-10), the parable of the prodigal son (L 15,11-32), the parable of the dishonest steward (L 16,1-9) and also the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (L 16,19-31). The fourth chapter not only encapsulates Luke's view of wealth, but also mentions the antithesis of wealth, namely poverty. The following chapter focuses on the term "God's kingdom" and its relationship to the material goods of this world. As the Gospel of Luke is often combined with the Acts of the Apostles to coalesce into one great composition, the last chapter is devoted to the relationship of the first Christian...

Claiton André Kunz 14 March 2006 (has links)
This dissertation is an analysis of one of Jesus teachings methods. Parabolic actions, which were used by the Old Testament prophets, were also used by Jesus Christ. This research tries to attest this use and establish some criteria for its analysis. In the first part, some general aspects that they concern the parabolic actions are examined, as, for example, their conception, their use, the purpose for which they were used and some of their characteristics. In the second part, some formal aspects of the actions are examined, as, for example, literary form, historical analysis, intentional analysis and interpretation. In this part, especially in the analysis of the literary form, some criteria for the identification of parabolic actions are established. Finally, in the third part, by way of example, the parabolic action of the Cursing of the Fig Tree, as told by Marcos and Matthew, is analysed. Parabolic actions are a preaching method. But, much morethan an aid to preaching or a way of illustrating a message, they themselves are the messages.
