Hoburgen – mer än bara en klint : En kombinerad osteologisk- och rumslig landskapsanalys av Gotlands sydligaste udde och dess invånare / Hoburgen – more than just a cliff : A combined osteological and spatial landscape analysis of Gotland’s southernmost peninsula and its inhabitants

Albihn, Ivan January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines Storsudret, Gotland’s southernmost peninsula, through an overview perspective of the landscape and its geographical features, as well as Sundre parish for a local analysis of ancient monuments and the people in the area. The south-westernmost point is Hoburgen, a cliff that has left an imprint in the Gotlandic culture in various ways. Through the study of maps, analysis of osteological remains, and etymological connections to Hoburgen, this thesis demonstrates a nuanced picture of the place and the people within. By studying these aspects, we come closer to understand people’s relationship to the landscape throughout the ages and why they chose to return to it and reuse ancient burial sites. / Gotland under det 3:e årtusendet f.Kr.

Catastrophes and the Role of Social Networks in Recovery: A Case Study of St. Bernard Parish, LA, Residents After Hurricane Katrina

Lasley, Carrie E 02 August 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the experiences of St. Bernard Parish, La., residents as they coped with the impact of the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. An estimated 50,000 St. Bernard Parish residents relocated to a new home one year after Katina in 2006, and many of those residents moved again. This study examines the effects of the decisions of St. Bernard residents to relocate or to return on their social connections. The utility, adaptability and durability of social networks of these residents will be explored to enrich our knowledge about the social effects of recovery and the role that distance plays in the way residents connect to each other six years after Hurricane Katrina. It also examines the applicability of disaster theory as it relates to this case and develops a methodology for examining the impact of geographic dispersal on social networks.

Entre valeur affective et valeur d'usage, quel avenir pour les églises paroissiales françaises ? : La région urbaine Lyon Saint-Etienne interrogée par le référentiel du "Plan églises" québécois / Between emotional values and functional values, what future for french parish churches ? : The Lyon - Saint-Étienne urban region questioned by the Quebec’s "Plan Churches"

Meynier-Philip, Mélanie 16 November 2018 (has links)
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the future of religious heritage has provoked consideration within the fields of law, history, architecture and heritage. The origin of this problem is explained both by the decline in traditional worship practices, essentially Catholic in France, from the 1960s onwards, and by the Church’s lack of human and financial resources, which has resulted in the appearance of veritable "religious desert". This process, related to society’s secularisation, is expected to increase because of the likelihood of these two factors intensifying. If convents, monasteries, seminaries and other Catholic religious buildings have already been affected by this phenomenon, parish church buildings are now in turn losing their original function. Quebec has also experienced this phenomenon, but its historical and legal contexts have accelerated the transformation of churches which in turn resulted in the establishment of a "churches Plan" aiming at preserving church buildings by converting them.In this thesis, that pioneering programme is used in relation to the Lyons Saint-Etienne urban area, as a lens through which to read the French situation and as a tool for generating methods adapted to its specific context. The first part summarises the specific heritage and legal knowledge bases from Quebec and France concerning their parish churches, which is necessary for understanding the two contexts. The second part is an observational study, which defines the territory and creates an inventory of the corpus of research. We first provide an inventory of 429 parish churches within the territory studied here. From an analysis of their transformations, we propose three major typologies ("historical", "19th-century" and "20 h-century " churches), Using the cases of church conversions in ou corpus, we analyse the degree of compatibility between their previous worship use and their new uses, and then formulate hypotheses relating architectural interventions for adaptative reuse to restoration theories. The third part is an action-research interventional study. Three representative case studies from each church typology have been selected, in the town of Montarcher, Givors and Villeurbanne. For each case, a participatory approach has been set up with the municipality, inhabitants and associations, in order to propose reconversion scenarios adapted to local needs. This work shows that the demolition of parish churches, widely perceived as a common good, threatens the transmission of local identities. It therefore seems essential to start a global reflection on the evolution of this heritage, one which takes into account territorial issues, citizens' demands and the architectural diversity of these buildings. We show that the architect, through both his sensitivity to the place and his technical, can play a central role in implementing of these reflection. / Since the beginning of the 21st century, the future of religious heritage has provoked consideration within the fields of law, history, architecture and heritage. Rede of reeds : land and labour in rural Norfolk

Woolley, Jonathan Paget January 2018 (has links)
The central aim of this thesis is to provide a detailed ethnographic account of the human ecology of the Broads - a protected wetland region in the East of England - focussing upon how working lives shape and are shaped by this reedy landscape. In conversations about the management of the Broads, the concept of "common sense" is a frequent trope; encompassing a wide range of associated meanings. But what are these meanings of "common sense" in English culture, and how do they influence the peoples of England, and landscapes in which they work? This thesis addresses these questions ethnographically; using academic and lay deployments of common sense as a route into the political economy of rural Norfolk. Based on 12 months of fieldwork in the Broads National Park, this thesis draws together interviews and participant observation with land managers of various kinds - including conservationists, farmers, gamekeepers, volunteers, gardeners, and administrators. Chapter 1 dissects the differences between academic and popular understandings of "common sense" as a phrase, and produces an ethnographically-derived, working definition. Chapter 2 examines the attitudes of farmers, establishing "the common" as a root metaphor for social and practical rectitude, actualised through labouring in a shared landscape. Chapter 3 explores how the common is sensed, reflecting upon the diverse sensoria afforded by different degrees of enclosure on a single nature reserve. Chapter 4 explores how the concept of common sense intersects with a prevailing culture of possessive individualism, creating a fragmented society in the Park, wracked by controversies over management. Chapter 5 examines bureaucracy in Broadland - frequently cast as the very antithesis of common sense. In the conclusion, we return to the title, and ask - what do the reeds have to say about land, labour, and human nature?

Úřad vikáře na přelomu století (1790-1821) / Office of the vicar at the turn of the century (17901821)

BEČVÁŘ, Stanislav January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with a statistical study of two books of protocols in the office of the vicar episcopal in Pelhřimov. They both cover the period from 1750 to 1831. It is focused on the time when Vincenc Josef Rubricius from Nová Cerekev was in the office of the vicar episcopal. In 1790 he became a vicar episcopal and stayed in his office for three decades until the time of his death in 1821. Thanks to his diligence and precision in maintaining the official agenda and the long-term work in the office of the vicar episopal, it was possible to perceive the studied time period as a coherent unit. Such a notation in the book of protocols was an evidence about the official acts. The statistical data about the number of the notations are described in the diploma thesis in 32 chapters, each of them for a particular year. It studies the number in the particular months, weeks as well as days. Due to this, it monitors the number of the official acts, e. g. with the consistory in České Budějovice, the other parish offices belonging to the vicariate, the Regional Authority in Tábor or the deanery in Pelhřimov. Even the visitations in particular parish offices were noted down into the books of protocols. Owing to these notations, it was possible to describe into details how the visitations were carried out during a particular year.

Počátky a vývoj vzdělávání v Jindřichově Hradci / The beginnings and development of education in Jindřichův Hradec

ŠIMKOVÁ, Lucie January 2012 (has links)
The work deals with the origins of development of education in the town of Jindřichův Hradec (Neuhaus, Nova Domus). It briefly describes the history of the city, and it mentions the development of the school system in Bohemia. The study follows the development of educational facilities in Jindřichův Hradec from its beginnings in the Middle Ages up to the climax in the form of the University. The greatest attention is paid to the local pride of education - "grammar school" with its more than four hundred-year-old history - while trying not to miss any of the schools that arose in the town over the centuries. The study demonstrates the importance of Jindřichův Hradec as the school centre of more than regional significance.

Křest v myšlení raně novověkého měšťana / Baptism In The Thinking of Early Modern Burghers

JIROUTOVÁ, Kateřina January 2009 (has links)
The birth and the baptism of child were significant events in the life of people in all historical periods. This diploma thesis demonstrates meaning of the baptism rite and its reflection in the urban society in the Early Modern Age. In comparison to bachelor thesis was used more sources. The research of six families memoirs is supplied with analysis of parish register of Český Krumlov town from 1662 to 1666. Sources of religious area represents catholic, evangelical and Lutheral clerical works and especially polemics. Wider spectrum of sources made possible deeper sight at meaning of baptism and confrontation between religious order and everyday practice in baptism and godparenthood in towns in the 16. and 17. centuries.
