The research works martyrdom in early Christianity as a discursive phenomenon, that is, as a practice that emerges from a discursive interaction between the main cultures in constant dialogue in the early centuries of the Christian era, Greco-Roman, Jewish and Christian. For this analysis, we will dialogue with the works of Judith Perkins and Candida Moss, Christine Trevett, William Tabbernee, Rex D. Butler, among others, as well as we will use the dialogic concept of Mikhail Bakhtin. The research also discusses the latest research about the martyrdom theme. By examining this ideology developed in early Christianity could identify the discursive construction of a character linked to the practice martyrdom, the martyr. We present the various characteristics attributed to the martyr in a corpus of early Christian texts known as Acts of the martyrs, highlighting the high status achieved by these men and women who faced death. The martyr, to face and experience death receives invaluable powers, which makes it a special person, an ideal Christian who is above the ecclesiastical hierarchy and even the heavenly hierarchy. The Passio Sanctorum perpetuae et Felicitatis is an example of early Christian literature that shares these ideas that pervade the early centuries of the Christian era. By analyzing the plot of the narrative composition of martyrdom report identified traces of the discourse on martyrdom and the martyr present in early Christianity. / O propósito desta pesquisa é analisar a Passio Sanctorum Perpetuae et Felicitatis, destacando como este relato de martírio apresenta suas personagens principais, isto é, como os mártires são construídos narrativamente. A pesquisa trabalha o martírio no cristianismo primitivo como um fenômeno discursivo, ou seja, como uma prática surge de uma interação discursiva entre as principais culturas em constante diálogo nos primeiros séculos da era cristã, a greco-romana, judaica e cristã. Para tal análise, dialogaremos com as obras de Judith Perkins e Candida Moss, Christine Trevett, Willian Tabbernee, Rex D. Butler, entre outros, bem como nos utilizaremos do conceito de dialogismo de Mikhail Bakhtin. A pesquisa discute, também, as mais recentes pesquisas acerca do tema do martírio. Ao examinar esta ideologia desenvolvida no cristianismo primitivo pôde-se identificar a construção discursiva de uma personagem atrelada à prática martírio, o mártir. Apresentamos as diversas características atribuídas ao mártir num corpo de textos do cristianismo primitivo conhecidos como Atas dos mártires, destacando o status elevado alcançados por esses homens e mulheres que enfrentaram a morte. O mártir, ao enfrentar e experimentar a morte recebe poderes inestimáveis, que o torna uma pessoa especial, um cristão ideal que se encontra acima da hierarquia eclesiástica e até mesmo da hierarquia celestial. A Passio Sanctorum Perpetuae et Felicitatis é um exemplo de literatura cristã primitiva que partilha dessas ideias que perpassam os primeiros séculos da era cristã. Ao analisar o enredo da composição narrativa deste relato de martírio identificamos traços do discurso sobre o martírio e sobre o mártir presentes no cristianismo primitivo.

ANGLICKÁ ANOTACE (= předběžná náplň práce) Passio Perpetuae and Its Reflection in the Literature of Ancient Church The "Passion of Perpetua and Felicity" (Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis) is one of the most renowned texts of early Christian hagiography. Accordingly, it has been enjoying a renewal of scholarly interest in the last decades. However, surprisingly little attention was paid to its literary "Nachleben", and there exist virtually no studies focusing on its reception in the subsequent literature of the early Church. Seemingly simple narrative, describing the martyrdom of a group of North African Christians, has been held in high esteem since its composition. It acquired almost "canonical" status and was considered authoritative not only by the mass of simple believers but by the Christian intellectuals, too. Though highly venerated in the early Church, it contained a number of innovative and - in the context of Antique and early Christian society - potentially subversive features. These novel features were felt to undermine the existing social order and hierarchy, and it was necessary to "explain them away" in order to make the text more compliant with traditional and generally accepted social values. A fronte dell’ampia e varia tipologia di studi dedicati all’episodio del “beato” Simone da Trento (1475), emergeva la mancanza di informazioni riguardanti uno dei maggiori protagonisti della vicenda: il bresciano Giovanni Mattia Tiberino, autore della Passio beati Simonis tridentini, ovvero il testo che determinò la fortuna letteraria degli avvenimenti trentini. A lungo limitato al ruolo che svolse nella difesa della causa di Simonino, l’interesse nei confronti di questo personaggio non ha mai varcato il confine dell’erudizione locale, impedendo una ricostruzione esauriente della sua figura di uomo e d’intellettuale: questa tesi desidera definire meglio i lineamenti biografici e culturali del Tiberino, per mostrare le varie sfaccettature di questo complesso profilo di letterato e umanista, pur riconoscendo l’importanza che ebbe l’esperienza trentina per la sua formazione e affermazione come intellettuale. La tesi presenta tre capitoli: il primo si concentra sulla vita e le opere del Tiberino, delineando una biografia completa e documentata; il secondo comprende il censimento e la catalogazione di tutti i testimoni, manoscritti ed edizioni a stampa, delle opere dedicate a Simone da Trento, mostrando l’entità della loro diffusione e le modalità di circolazione; il terzo è dedicato all’edizione della Passio, corredato di un apparato delle fonti ed un commento. / Considering the wide and various kinds of studies dedicated to the case of the “blessed” Simone from Trento (1475), it stood out the lack of information about one of the most important actors of this story: Giovanni Mattia Tiberino from Brescia, author of the “Passio beati Simonis tridentini”, that is the text which established the literary success of these events. For a long time the only interest for this character was related to his role in defence of Simonino’s case, and this interest never crossed the borders of local erudition; in this way it was not possible to have a full image of his figure as a man and as a scholar. This thesis aims to define better his biographical and cultural outlines, in order to show all the different faces of his complex profile as a man of letters and scholar. This thesis is composed by three chapters: the first one is about Tiberino’s life and works, and it outlines a complete and documented biography. The second one comprehends census and cataloguing of all attestations, manuscripts and printed editions of works related to Simone from Trento; it also shows the extent of their spreading and the manners of their circulation. The third is dedicate to the Passio’s edition, with enclosed an critical apparatus and a commentary.

Queer genealogies in transnational Barcelona : Maria-Mercè Marçal, Cristina Peri Rossi, and Flavia Company

This dissertation examines lesbian and queer desire in texts in Catalan and Spanish written in Barcelona, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires from the 1960s to the present. In the texts, desire includes but is not limited to the erotic; it encompasses issues of queer textuality, relationality, and literary transmission. I focus on the works of three authors who have spent the majority of their lives in Barcelona. However, the city appears almost incidentally in their works; the genealogies that the authors trace are transnational. The texts combine literal movement (through exile or diaspora) and a metaphorical sense of being “out of place” that prompts writers to take refuge in writing. I demonstrate that despite depicting affinities beyond the family and nation, the works reveal the persistence of familial and national ties, albeit in spectral or queer ways. Rather than tracing continuous lines of descent that emphasise origins, the works are principally concerned with futurity and fragmentation, as in Michel Foucault’s reading of genealogy. Chapter One on Maria-Mercè Marçal’s La passió segons Renée Vivien (1994) traces a literary genealogy from Sappho to Renée Vivien in fin de siècle Paris to Marçal. The novel represents a merging of literary desire and erotic desire; Marçal’s search for symbolic mothers turns out to be a search for symbolic lovers that is oriented towards the present and future. In Chapter Two, I posit that in Cristina Peri Rossi’s La nave de los locos (1984) “happiness” consists of being open to chance and unpredictability unlike in conventional “happy” scripts in which a valuable life is believed to consist of (heterosexual) marriage, children, and property ownership. In Part II I argue that through fragmentation, allegory, and ambiguity, Peri Rossi’s El libro de mis primos (1969) contests authoritarian discourse without itself becoming a site of hegemonic meaning. In inviting the reader’s collaboration, it ensures authorial legacy. Part I of Chapter Three is an analysis of the temporality of obsession in Flavia Company’s Querida Nélida (1988). I propose that obsession and melancholia may point to a utopian future rather than signalling an entrapment in the past. My study of Melalcor (2000) in Part II suggests that queer forms of relationality that are not centred on procreation and monogamy offer ethical models of sociality. Part III focusses on Company’s return to biological family in Volver antes que ir (2012) and Por mis muertos (2014). The resurgence in these texts of family members who have died signals that just as the queer haunts the family, the family haunts the queer.
