Englander, Jenny January 2010 (has links)

The current dissertation seeks to present the contribution of the Jew-German philologist, Erick Auerbach (1892-1957) to the biblical reception to Modernity. Auerbach, who was one of the main literary critics of the XX century, redeems the exemplary interpretation on which historical, factual, distant in time events are connected through a verticalisation. The figural model was the mean by which the Bible was established, granting to it some unity, and it was used for a long period in the Middle Age. Auerbach saw in this model the best form of representation and interpretation of the Realism, reason why he implemented it in his literary critical. There is an understanding that the biblical literature, with its mixture of styles, accrued the path on which the modern literary realism flourished, which, in Auerbach, was seen on several realisms. The exemplary interpretation brings a new focus over the cultural and historical distancing. Auerbach saw them as positives for the establishing of the figural interpretation, because in the figural model, the historical lapse is a condition for the interpretation. And one of the forms to connect the reader to the text and establish the causal links of the figural poles is the concept of "Ansatz" which, in the case of the biblical reception, lays down a unity for the text comprehension. This comprehension demands a humble stance from the reader. Auerbach also recognizes the polysemy nature of the biblical text, but points to the casting of the interpretation, caused by the creation of dogmas promoted by the Church, which ended generating the abandonment of the figural model, and a misuse, when not a loss, of the biblical narratives approaches. To Auerbach, the narratives summarizes the power of attraction of the biblical text, because the biblical characters beyond being equal to the other men, live the same tragedies, in which suffer a shaping process. From this identification, the reader starts to incorporate the figural model once it becomes incorporated to the figural poles. The full reception of the biblical message will entail in the consummation in the reader's life, setting his reality. And in the reader will happen both the fulfillment and completion phenomena, presents in the figural interpretation. And on these two elements (fulfillment and completion) lies the basis of the Christian hope experience and living.

Divine Violence and Divine Sovereignty: Kierkegaard and the Binding of Isaac

Lee, Hanull 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the concept of sovereignty, as developed by the jurist Carl Schmitt, and argues that this concept helps to elucidate the very core of Fear and Trembling, a text that continues to be heavily misunderstood despite its great fame in Western thought today. Through a close examination of Schmitt’s formulation of the concept of sovereignty and the method by which he develops this concept through Kierkegaard’s concept of the exception in Repetition, I show how Kierkegaard influenced Schmitt and also how Schmitt’s interpretation is useful for reading Fear and Trembling. However, I also show how Schmitt’s usage of Kierkegaard, despite its ingenuity, is misleading, and present a more faithful reading of Kierkegaard’s concept of exception. With this reorientation, I in turn critique Schmitt’s methodology and the way he understands sovereignty. Following this reinterpretation of sovereignty, I examine the text of Genesis 22 and Fear and Trembling and examine the theological themes that ground the narrative of the Binding of Isaac. I argue that the problem of the Binding and the arguments set forth in Fear and Trembling cannot be understood adequately without a clear awareness of the image of reality that is presupposed. Here, I make use of Erich Auerbach’s illuminating reading of Genesis 22, and Jacob Taubes’ understanding of eschatology. I then examine the problem of violence as presented in the Binding, and how Kierkegaard departs from both Kant’s and Hegel’s critique of Abraham. Finally, I examine Derrida’s reading of Fear and Trembling in The Gift of Death and the way he challenges the height of sovereignty that is implicit within Kierkegaard’s “absolute relation to the absolute.” / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Angeletti, Valerio 11 July 2022 (has links)

Tradition. Passio. Poesis. Retreat: Comments around “The Gallery”

Lipson, Daniel B 01 January 2013 (has links)
Although Andrew Marvell wrote and published relatively little, his poetry collects from the full range of “schools” and idiosyncratic styles present in the seventeenth century: echoes of Herbert, Donne, Milton, Traherne, Herrick, Lovelace, and Jonson, among others, permeate throughout his work. Although much of his imagery seems novel, if not strange, it is clear that Marvell has a deep engagement with several important long-running traditions. His work is conversation with Ovid, Horace, and Theocritus as much as it responds directly to the poets whose lives overlapped with his own. In his engagement with such varied sources, Marvell demonstrates an astounding degree of poetic flexibility. He is a master of imitating voice and style.
