Die pastorale begeleiding van gesinne waarin kindermishandeling voorkom : 'n narratief-gesinsterapeutiese perspektief (Afrikaans)

Fick, Anton Rupert 13 November 2006 (has links)
English: This dissertation reports on a study of the pastoral counselling of families in which child abuse occurs. As research progressed, the researcher came into contact with increasing numbers of such families. Many pastoral workers (this includes all those who render pastoral assistance of some kind) are not adequately qualified to work with these families, and their lack of knowledge gives rise to uncertainty. There is also a need for a pastoral approach, since child abuse has always fallen with the specific fields of study of Social Science and Psychology. This study is based on the narrative approach and reflects on its usefulness by referring to a number of case studies. Since practical theology as an active science chooses as its point of departure the world as experienced by individuals, and the role of the church in society, man is viewed in the context of all his life experiences or his personal history. God created man as His representative on earth and as the pinnacle of His creation. The Fall resulted in the disintegration of man's relationship with God and with his fellow men. In His mercy God established a covenant, binding himself to mankind. The pastoral perspective is serious about this God of the Covenant who acts to save those that are lost and who, through the redeeming work of Jesus Christ, demonstrates His boundless love for sinners. The Kingdom of God is reflected in every person who acknowledges the values of the Kingdom and lives according to them. These values are love, justice, peace and hope. In families where children are abused, these values are often absent, since abuse is in conflict with God's plan for the family and for children. Through the symbiotic working of the Holy Spirit, people in need are helped to face the future with hope and a new potential for growth that can ultimately lead to victory. The research revealed that a family with a history of abuse can, under the guidance of a God that they know, again begin to dream about the future and can once again experience love, peace, stability and security. The approaches followed by Müller, Freedman&Combs, as well as the use of the genogram, enable pastors to assist members of families where child abuse occurs in deconstructing dominant experiences and constructing new realities. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

The manipulation of the poor by the powerful for self-serving careerism : a pastoral care study

Kabanyane, Tommy Ndzimane 29 March 2007 (has links)
The basic premises of this study is that the poor people should not be manipulated by the rich and powerful for their selfish end. Though they are poor, they are God’s people and God loves them as well. Growing up in the poor rural areas of Herschel, the researcher was the victim of apartheid laws at an early age. He experienced the pangs of hunger and on many occasions was tempted to steal. As a small boy he had many unanswered questions, when he saw white boys of his age being well fed, clad, and staying in beautiful homes. Later as a minister, working with Rev. S.R. Kumalo, in Ivory Park informal settlement, the researcher was touched by the plight of the poor living in shacks. In 2001 he was stationed in the neighbouring Olievenhoutbosch informal settlement. Here he was confronted with circumstances that perpetuated poverty among the poor, such as lack of job opportunities, no formal school buildings, sports facilities that keep the youth away from crime, no sites for churches, shops, clinics and police station. The people felt neglected and betrayed by the very government they voted for in 1994 and 1998. The government has failed to fulfill the promises made then. The poor even question the existence of God, as poverty in this area is absolute. If God does exist, as far as they are concerned, he has either forgotten them, or turned his back on them. Caring for the poor was a major challenge to the researcher. He had to study and acquire skills of empowering and liberating the poor from their morass. The researcher used Gerkin’s biblical traditional method of shepherding God’s people, as used in Old Testament times. He also applied Masango’s liberation theology as a way out to freedom from bondage of oppression. The researcher also identified five forms of poverty that affects the poor people of Olievenhoutbosch, but emphasis is zeroed on economic poverty, as it affects all their spheres of life. The daily struggle of the poor here is how to keep the body and soul together. The economic poverty has resulted in other evil repercussions, such as prostitution or sex work, which in turn leads to wide spread of pandemic HIV/AIDS, crime such as house breakings, car hijackings and general robbery, are on the increase. The poor are neglected by the politicians and the rich. Every time during political campaigns the politicians remember that there are people to be addressed in Olievenhoutbosch, they visit them. After elections the politicians disappear to come back again when there is the next political campaign. The researcher views this as the manipulation of the poor by the powerful for their own selfish ends. The researcher has included the stories of the poor to back up their suffering after being used as pawns by the politicians. As means of healing the poor people of Olievenhoutbosch informal settlement, the researcher has recommended some pastoral care guidelines. The poor must be encouraged to re-evaluate and come out of their state of inertia and start to live a new life. They must be empowered to use their voting power to change their circumstances and lives. They must end their exploitation through their sheer numbers. The lesson of liberation will also focus on the powerful as they are the victims of greed and power hungry. Nobody can really be happy and live comfortably when the neighbor is starving and unhappy. The boycotts and marches taking place recently in the townships are a sign that the masses can no longer tolerate their sufferings, and unfulfilled promises. In concluding this study the researcher has suggested the way forward for pastoral care-givers. He has further suggested some researches that need to be done. At the end of this study the researcher also became aware of his own weaknesses, which are his personal ongoing struggles and challenges that must be subdued in the new democratic South Africa. / Dissertation (MA(Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

[pt] AUDIÇÃO EQUILIBRADA: RELAÇÕES ENTRE ACONSELHAMENTO PASTORAL E PSICANÁLISE / [en] BALANCED LISTENING: RELATIONS BETWEEN PASTORAL COUNSELING AND PSYCHOANALYSIS

FRANCISCO DE ASSIS SOUZA DOS SANTOS 04 February 2016 (has links)
[en] The investigation work proposed by this thesis is none other than the objective analysis of the difference between the religious counseling and the psychoanalytical method of the unconscious approach. Yet what may seem simple at first sight leads to mazes and intricacies much more likely to confuse than to clarify the ideas already troubled in the historical moment that passes the humanity. This thesis seeks to prove the importance of the two segments to which it is exposed the human being in an attempt to self-perception, as this operation includes searching for meaning for themselves and each other. So the religion becomes important in any scientific segment based on the principle of the search of the common good, since the contemporaneity did not remove the existential repertory of the human religiosity, which remains inseparable from him. The method developed by Sigmund Freud, notably recognized as one of the methods that are more pointed and influenced the cognitive sciences over almost two centuries, presents, although young as an inspiring source of investigation in the Human Sciences in general. The question which is to be answered is: would be possible a balanced hearing, by the pastoral counseling and psychoanalyst, if both religion and psychoanalysis, formed by the raw material of the unveiling of the meaning of life through thought, could help the maturation of the human being as a person? What would be the possible answers to this question? This research seeks to contribute to the unveiling of these unknowns.

Unmasking the black pastoral superman: self-care for male black pastors serving the black church

Armstrong Jr., Ovester 02 June 2023 (has links)
Black male pastors are at risk for overlooking self-care and for experiencing mental health crisis while striving to address the complex ministry situations of black churches and communities that historically were traumatized and oppressed. Burdens are typically borne in silence out of fear of appearing weak or lacking in faith. This study calls for pastors and congregations together to reexamine their understandings of discipleship, followership, authenticity, and success, and to recognize a pastor’s humanity and vulnerability, thereby enabling him to lay aside an unhealthy superman persona imposed internally and externally, and allow for healthy conversations about well-being.

Pastoral counseling : a survey and analysis of the practices in the California Nevada Conference of the Methodist Church

Adkisson, Elliott 01 January 1952 (has links) (PDF)
The place of counseling in the pastor's task has been the subject of much research and study during the past few decades. The consensus of those concerned with defining the pastor's task seems to be that counseling is a vital need of parishioners in all churches and that responsibility for counseling usually lies with the pastor. In a sincere attempt to meet the needs of their people many pastors are genuinely trying to equip themselves to provide counseling services. The problem that naturally needs evaluation is: The Present Status of Pastoral Counseling. The objectives that ultimately evolve in this investigation are: To provide for ministers and other interested persons information regarding the present status of pastoral counseling of the ministers of the California Nevada Conference of the Methodist Church. To furnish possible basis for revision and improvement of such counseling services as are now offered in various churches.

Improving religious organizations' effectiveness with battered women: advice from victim advocates

Gross, Waymon Gerald 11 May 2010 (has links)
Religious organizations are in a unique position to assist battered women. The purpose of this study was to survey counselor/advocates who work at battered women's shelters to determine what advice they have to give to religious organizations to improve their effectiveness in helping battered women. The sample for this study consisted of 91 counselor/advocates from 20 battered women's shelters in Virginia. A questionnaire was designed to determine the counselor/advocates' opinions about their clients' interactions with religious organizations as to how helpful, or not helpful, these organizations have been. The participants identified a number of ways that religious organizations could better meet the needs of battered women. First, religious leaders can become better informed about the dynamics of wife battering so that their attempts to help will not further endanger victims. Second, leaders can be more supportive of battered women by taking a more public stand against wife battering and by creating a more accepting, healing environment within their faith community. Next, those who are not trained to counsel individuals involved in wife battering need to learn to refer them to community agencies that are better prepared to help victims and their batterers. Finally, for battered women both inside and outside their faith communities, leaders can work with shelters to provide financial and other resources to assist these women as they search for ways to live in a violence free home environment. / Master of Science

Negotiating values in abortion counselling

Van Vuuren, Christina Johanna Louisa Janse 01 1900 (has links)
The introduction of abortion legalisation in South Africa during 1997 gave rise to the need for pre- and post-abortion counselling. Two dominant counselling groups came to the fore namely pro-choice and pro-life, reflecting the respective stances of society on abortion. In order to answer the following research questions: "What value-challenges do abortion counsellors experience, if any?" and "What ways have they found in negotiating these challenges?" A narrative conversation was used to come to an understanding of these research questions in practice. Research was undertaken with counsellors from both pro-life and pro-choice stances. The influence of capitalism, patriarchy and religion on role players confronted with making decisions on abortion was explored. Pro-choice counsellors negotiated their values in terms of forgiveness based on the unconditional forgiveness they would expect from God and pro-life counsellors in terms of God's forgiveness for the client, accepting her own responsibility for the consequences of the abortion. / Practical Theology / M.
