Location privacy in automotive telematics

Iqbal, Muhammad Usman, Surveying & Spatial Information Systems, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
The convergence of transport, communication, computing and positioning technologies has enabled a smart car revolution. As a result, pricing of roads based on telematics technologies has gained significant attention. While there are promised benefits, systematic disclosure of precise location has the ability to impinge on privacy of a special kind, known as location privacy. The aim of this thesis is to provide technical designs that enhance the location privacy of motorists without compromising the benefits of accurate pricing. However, this research looks beyond a solely technology-based solution. For example, the ethical implications of the use of GPS data in pricing models have not been fully understood. Likewise, minimal research exists to evaluate the technical vulnerabilities that could be exploited to avoid criminal or financial penalties. To design a privacy-aware system, it is important to understand the needs of the stakeholders, most importantly the motorists. Knowledge about the anticipated privacy preferences of motorists is important in order to make reasonable predictions about their future willingness to adopt these systems. There is limited research so far on user perceptions regarding specific payment options in the uptake of privacy-aware systems. This thesis provides a critical privacy assessment of two mobility pricing systems, namely electronic tolls and mobility-priced insurance. As a result of this assessment, policy recommendations are developed which could support a common approach in facilitating privacy-aware mobility-pricing strategies. This thesis also evaluates the existing and potential inferential threats and vulnerabilities to develop security and privacy recommendations for privacy-aware pricing designs for tolls and insurance. Utilising these policy recommendations and analysing user-perception with regards to the feasibility of sustaining privacy , and willingness to pay for privacy, two privacy-aware mobility pricing designs have been presented which bridge the entire array of privacy interests and bring them together into a unified approach capable of sustaining legal protection as well as satisfying privacy requirements of motorists. It is maintained that it is only by social and technical analysis working in tandem that critical privacy issues in relation to location can be addressed.

Nové přístupy ke konstrukci produktů pojištění automobilů / New approaches to construction of vehicles insurance

Čápová, Markéta January 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes new possibilities that can occur at construction of motor-vehicle insurance on the worldwide market. In Czech republic there has been insurance liability for damage incurred running vehicles and wrecking crane insurance till now. Abroad indeed begins extend unprecedented product of motor-vehicle insurance known as Pay As You Drive that derives benefits from absolutely new methods at construction insurance.Insurance is invoiced on the basis of real mileage. For data gathering there are exploited different counter circuit functional mainly on the basis of GPS navigation.Aim of diploma work was analysis of this new kind of insurance, evaluation of its fruitfulness, serviceability and possibilities of its aplication in Czech republic. At the end of my thesis there was effected analysis of GAP insurance that can be negotiate in Czech republic already. GAP Insurance there has been like form of additional insurance to all-risk insurance. It covers difference in acquisition price of new vehicle and its actual market price that the classical all-risk insurance doesn't cover.

Implementation of UsageBased Insurance solutions : A qualitative analysis of a technology-based insurance model from the perspective of the Swedish insurance industry / Implementering av användarbaserade försäkringslösningar : En kvalitativ analys av en teknikbaserad försäkringsmodell från den svenska försäkringsbranschens perspektiv

Yvell, Malin, Axelsson, Elin January 2019 (has links)
Recent years’ digital transformation has led to an increased interest in using and utilising smart technology in various insurance solutions, something that has come to challenge the traditional insurance model. The UsageBased Insurance model (UBI) is an example of an insurance model that utilises these technological innovations. With the aid of smart technology, the insurance model has the possibility, by using real-time data, to price premiums more accurately and efficiently, as well as it enables a more proactive approach. Despite the model’s positive capabilities, the degree of implementation in Europe, as well as in Sweden, can generally be regarded as low. Thus, the interest is raised about what influences this low level of implementation, as well as what challenges, requirements and consequences that are attached to such implementation. By investigating the UBI model, the purpose of this study is thus to analyse how new technology-based insurance models could affect the Swedish insurance industry and, in an extension, also the Swedish society. The study also intends to evaluate how these technology-based insurance policies could affect the insurability of risk, this by applying Berliner’s (1982) insurability criteria. With the help of a comprehensive literature study in parallel with a qualitative, semi-structured, interview study, the report aims to provide a broader understanding of what bridging contradictions that exist between theory and practice. The biggest challenges identified, related to a UBI implementation, are the customers’ willingness to share personal data, the insurance company’s propensity for transformation, their digital ability and the Swedish welfare system. Further, it has been concluded that the model’s increased ability to assess risk could consequently mean that an implementation would contribute to discrimination and cherry-picking, also known as cream skimming. To overcome these challenges and risks, and to stimulate a high implementation level, the required factors identified are that the UBI solution needs to stimulate other incentives than the monetary, that it should be simple and designed in a way that makes it feel personalised and an integrated part of the policyholders’ lives. If the primary purpose of utilising the UBI model is to decide the most profitable premium cost, the authors assess that the impediments are too high, the incentives too low and negative consequences too severe to reach a high degree of implementation on the Swedish market. The insurance companies instead have a great opportunity, as a proactive risk manager, to take a whole new position in the policyholders’ lives. Through proactive services, which are not premium-based, insurance companies would instead stimulate a behavioural change by advising, encouraging and in different ways rewarding a behavioural change towards a healthier and safer lifestyle. A development that all actors benefit from, without suffering the risk of punishing and/or discriminating policyholders. From the perspective of lacking social resources, this is also an opportunity to create a more proactive health care in Sweden.

Contributions à l'évaluation des risques en assurance tempête et automobile / Contributions to risk assessment in wind storm and car insurance

Mornet, Alexandre 30 September 2015 (has links)
Dissertation we study the storm guarantee dedicated to the damage caused by the wind and a development of the behavioral insurance through the automobile risk. We associate external information like the wind speed to insurance data. We propose the construction of a storm index to complete and strengthen the evaluation of the damages caused by the major storms. Then we define a partition of the French territory in 6 zones storms, depending on extreme wind correlations to test several scenarios. These various tests and considerations allow us to improve our storm index. We lean on extreme value theory models to show the impact of the variability on the calculation of return periods and capital requirements. We underline the difficulties to obtain strong results in connection with the extreme events. Concerning car insurance, we test various methods to answer the technical and legal evolutions. We characterize the man/woman partition by using the logistic procedure, the multiple correspondence analysis or the classification trees. We show that it is possible to compensate for the absence of the sex variable with other information specific to the insurants or to their vehicle and in particular the use of kilometric data. Finally, we are interested in the acquired experience by young drivers. We study the behavior on the road of the insurants to create new classes of risks
