Autour du paon et du phénix : étude d'une iconographie cultuelle et funéraire dans le Bassin méditerranéen (IVe-XIIe siècle) / Around the peacock and the phoenix : study of a cultual and funerary iconography in the Mediterranean area between the IVth and the XIIth century

Demès, Raphaël 18 November 2017 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the meaning of the peacock and the phoenix within contexts of worship and funerary contexts in the Mediterranean area, between the IVth and the XIIth centuries. The study is based on an iconographic documentation meeting 490 items of the peacock and 68 items of the phoenix. These birds were imaged in various ways as well as coins, paintings of catacombs, sarcophagi, mosaics (pavements, domes, apses, …), manuscripts, and even chancel screens. The analysis of the documentation indicates that links were weaved between both birds associated with the idea of revival long before the IVth century. The idea of revival, indeed, is a cross-cutting concept in the study of the iconography of the peacock and the phoenix between Antiquity and Middle Ages, between paganism and christianity. The first references to the these birds in the antique texts and the iconography are studied in order to reflect on the imagination about the peacock and the phoenix, both associated with cyclic rhythms, death and resurrection. The peacock was seen as a psychopomp, more generally like an intermediary between earth and sky, as well as between the human and the divine. Between the IIIth and the IVth centuries, the peacock and the phoenix were inserted into the funerary iconography of the first Christians and begin to be linked with the conception of the baptism as a revival. Between the IVth and the VIth centuries, they were inserted into the ecclesial space and they tightened their links with the Christ and the baptized. The peacock and the phoenix offer to the believer a hope of being healed. They show the triumph of the Risen Christ and announce the resurrection of the dead at the end of days. Between the VIIth and the IXth centuries, the iconography of the peacock is studied in particular on chancel screens and on the other sculptures linked with the eucharistic rite and with the idea of a connection between caro and spiritus. The documentation highlights the role of the peacock as the guard of the threshold, from a material and spiritual point of view. The recurring presence of these birds between the VIth and the IXth centuries in Roman ecclesial spaces was also put in perspective towards the papal realizations and according to stakes strongly bound to the memory of the saints and the Church. The study opens to the XIIth century with San Clement’s monumental decoration in Rome as a pivotal testimony in the evolution of the meaning of the peacock.

Tavelures du pommier et de l'olivier : réalisation de modèles épidémiologiques par des méthodes exploitant des observations biologiques acquises au verger / Ascospore release dynamic of Venturia inaequalis (and other ascomycetes) : incidence of temperature (and other factors)

Roubal, Christophe 09 October 2017 (has links)
Apple scab, caused by Venturia inaequalis, and peacoq leaf spot, cause by Fusicladiumoleagineum, are key diseases respectively for apple and olive growers. These disease usuallyrequire a large number of treatments. Adequate protection need a good evaluation ofquantitative disponibility of inoculum, and estimation of infection conditions. In this thesis, these two problems were studied using only field data. This is an originalaprroach to obtain knowledge about biology of fungi : most previous works were realised byregression of laboratory data obtained under controled conditions. In the case of Venturia inaequalis, primary inoculum consists of pseudothecia present in leaflitter. Treatments agains ascospore release period is the cornerstone of the strategy againstapple scab. However, the existing forecasting models are not reliable, and are all based ondegree-day time scale, proposed in 1982.Here, using a corpus of data acquired between 1996 and 2013, including observations ofascospore release and weather data, we assessed the daily rate of development of primaryinoculum by fitting generic new time scale functions. Further improvements were then studiedto take into account elements reported in litterature about the incidence of rain or wetness.Different methods were tested and adapted for the parameterisation of models by numericaloptimisation. Some forcasting models were proposed and adapted to the area where the studywas conducted, with parameters including rain and temperature. The validity was tested, andfurther developements of the forecasting tool was then proposed. In the case of Fusicladium oleagineum, a field-operational model predicting disease outbreakswas established as a function of temperature and relative humidity. First with the help ofpoints selected by experts, Secondly automaticaly using a neural network. A model defininglatent period as a function of average temperature after contamination was then realised.

No. of bitstreams: 1 ELAINE ANDRADE DA SILVA.pdf: 8261795 bytes, checksum: dba821c23caba04f41c9d468868adc2a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-08-26 / The aim of this study was to analyze the aspects of reproductive biology of Cichla piquiti (Blue Peacock Bass) in the reservoir of the Hydroelectric Plant of Serra da Mesa, an environment where they occur naturally (Rio Tocantins, Goiás, Brazil) was characterized. 217 specimens were sampled, with 109 females and 108 males over an annual reproductive cycle (October 2012 to September 2013) with the use of artificial lures. Biometric fish and macro and microscopic classification of gonadal maturation data provided the basis for investigation of the following reproductive parameters: 1) the type of spawning for gonad morphology at each stage of development; 2) the reproductive period, through the time of gonadal maturation frequencies of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and condition factor (K1 and K2); 3) the existence of reproductive seasonality; 4) the size at first maturity (L50); 5) the size of which 100% of the population is able to play (L100); 6) the composition of the population in total length and sex ratio, and 7) the length-weight relationship of the specie. The results indicated parceled spawning and intense reproductive activity in all months of the year, with no reproductive seasonality. No differences in sex ratio over the year. There was sexual dimorphism in growth, with positive allometric growth of males and females negative allometric growth. Males had higher amplitudes in total length and weight than females, and sizes of first maturation (L50) higher than females, and 32 cm for males and 33.5 cm for females. The L100 was estimated at 33.4 cm for males and 34.2 cm for females. The variation in body condition represented by the allometric condition factor (K1) less somatic (K2), varied only for females, as well as variations of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) in different stages of gonadal development were significant only for females, both possibly due to the weight of the testes negligible when compared to the ovaries. There was no significant temporal variations in the IGS and K1 of males and females, possibly by mature individuals occur and emptied throughout the year. Variations in air temperature, accumulated rainfall and reservoir volume did not affect the reproductive activity, which may indicate reproductive success of Cichla piquiti in more variable environmental conditions. Still, continuous monitoring of the population would be needed as measures for management and preservation of the species in its original basin.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lorenzo Barroco.pdf: 722257 bytes, checksum: 356df29a6c95a7e03f6ab0ca96899495 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The expansion of recreational fishing in Brazil started in the 1990 s, when more and more people came to the Amazon in search of peacock bass (Cichla spp.). The behavior of this cichlid, which attacks lures, is especially exciting for anglers. The middle Negro River has become one of the most popular areas of sport fishing of the world, where the largest peacock bass can be found. The importance of catch-and-release fishing as an sustainable fishing strategy has been shown to directly help conserve peacock bass fish stocks in the region. In this study, peacock bass mortality was evaluated in relation to catch-and-release fishing, comparing two types of artificial lures: the jig and a traditional middle-water type. Fish, samples were collected in January/February and October/November of 2012 in the Unini River, a right margin tributary of the Negro River, in the municipal region of Barcelos in Amazonas State. A total of 191 peacock bass were caught, 90 by jig lure and the rest by the middle-water lure. Both fish groups were submitted to experimental confinement during a period of three days. In both groups, 30 fish were confined individually and 60 confined collectively. Additionally, 11 fish from the second group had radio transmitters attached to be used in telemetry. The mortality rate was calculated for each type of lure and type of confinement. No mortality was encountered for the group caught with a jig beat lure. In comparison, the middle-water lure showed a mortality rate of 1.66% for the collective confinement and 18.18% for the monitoring involving telemetry. For both types of lures, no mortality was observed for fish confined individually. The data was plotted using a Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis that showed values of X2 (1.179) = 0,502 and p= 0,478 for confined environments. The same test show values of X2 (1.179) = 1,005 e p= 0,316 for the different lures. The results indicated that neither confinement type or lure type had a significantly negative impact on the peacock bass mortality rate from the catch-and-release fishery, demonstrating that catchand- release fishing has a very small impact on peacock bass mortality. Literary forms of caricature in the early-nineteenth-century novel

Ferguson, Olivia Mary January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the status of caricature in the literary culture of early-nineteenth- century Britain, with a focus on the novel. It shows how the early-nineteenth- century novel developed a variety of literary forms that negotiated and remade caricature for the bourgeois literary sphere. Case studies are drawn primarily from the published writings and manuscript drafts of Thomas Love Peacock, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and Walter Scott. The first chapter elucidates the various meanings and uses of 'caricature' in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when the term was more ambiguous and broadly applied than literary criticism and print history have acknowledged. I counter the assumption that the single-sheet satirical print was central to conceptions and practices of caricature in this period, giving examples of the textual, dramatic, and real-life 'caricatures' that were more often under discussion. The second and third chapters consider the unstable distinction between textual caricature and satirical characterisation in early-nineteenth-century literary culture. They explain how the literary construction of textual caricature developed from two sources: Augustan rulings against publishing satires on individuals, and caricature portraits as a pastime beloved of genteel British society. I argue that Peacock and Austen adapted forms of 'caricaturistic writing' that were conscious of the satirical literary work's relation to caricature. Subsequent chapters turn to the thematic uses of caricature in the early-nineteenth- century novel. In the fourth chapter, I uncover the significance of caricature to deformity in Mary Shelley's fiction, presenting evidence that her monsters' disproportion was inherited from the 'real-life' caricatures diagnosed in philosophical and medical texts of the eighteenth century. The final chapter traces ideas about caricature through the writings of Walter Scott, and finds that Scott conceived of exemplary graphic and textual caricatures as artefacts of antiquarian interest.
