A Framework for Multiple Adaptable Pedagogical Strategies in Intelligent Tutoring Systems

Mathews, Moffat Mannunkal January 2012 (has links)
The need to give educators the ability to enter a particular teaching strategy of their choice into an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) and have the ITS respond appropriately to each student has been stated by many researchers. For example, an educator could tell the ITS to keep students within a certain help level ratio (how much help they request), or to introduce a new topic in a particular manner and the ITS simply carries this out at each learning point of interest. Educators could then try new strategies, ones that unaided are impossible to try out in class (such as keeping a student within a help-seeking range) or difficult within an ITS (as the ITS would have to be specially programmed in that way). Current ITSs provide adaptivity to the student at the domain level but not necessarily at the pedagogical level. While a variety of pedagogical strategies have been implemented (e.g. apprenticeship, socratic, practice), there is no system that offers parts or all of these strategies with the ability to choose between them dynamically. In this project, we designed a new framework for an ITS to include multiple, potentially adaptable pedagogical strategies. This was done by breaking up the pedagogical module into separate components. The Pedagogical Strategy Set (PSS) contains all the strategies, written as constraints. The Pedagogical Student Model (PSM) keeps track of which pedagogical strategies were used by each student. Within the ITS, there is still a smaller, separate pedagogical module to deal with domain-specific strategies. The Pedagogical Control Centre (PCC) contains the logic of when and how to use the pedagogical strategies. It gathers its information from the other modules and uses decision logic to trigger strategies. We implemented and evaluated this framework within the context of SQL-Tutor and found that the framework could be used to enter pedagogical strategies, which in turn compared favourably to the original SQL-Tutor. This proof of concept opens up the possibility of the logic and algorithms that could be implemented (e.g. in the PCC) in future ITSs. The PSS is a separate module, written in a different language, independent of ITSs. This could lead to sharing of pedagogical strategies between tutors. Furthermore, students learn differently to each other; this framework allows them to do so.

When nature speaks : evoking connectedness with nature in children through role-play in outdoor programming

Gilbertson, Emma 09 January 2013 (has links)
Research was conducted to determine if role-play, when utilized within environmental education programs, could strengthen feelings of connection to nature in children. Six classes participated in the study through taking part in a field trip at the Devonian Botanic Garden; a department of the University of Alberta located in Edmonton, Alberta. Classes participated in one of two programs, which differed in pedagogical strategies: one used a delivery method of direct instruction and the other guided embodiment. Two data collection techniques were used: pre and post program surveys, as well art development - both techniques designed to measure the effect of the pedagogical strategies on the participant's feelings of connectedness to nature. Findings indicated that students who participated in the embodiment program showed inclination to value their environment more intrinsically, where students participating in the direct instruction program showed tendency to view the environment more anthropocentrically.

Amaral, Caroline Bohrer do January 2017 (has links)
This research investigates how pedagogical strategies contribute to the development of the socio affective dimension in students in elementary school. The main theoretical framework used was Jean Piaget‘s Genetic Epistemology. Through this theoretical background, aspects of the socio affective dimension were defined such as: interest, social exchanges (potential for cooperation) and autonomy. A qualitative approach was adopted in the form of multiple cases of study analysis. Research participants are elementary school teachers in private and public schools. They attended voluntarily to two editions of an extension course about the socio affective dimension and digital technologies in education. Data were collected both through interview of attendees and notes taken from activities developed during the course. Teaching methodology was strategically planned to include interaction‘s assumptions. Analysis unit consisted of pedagogical strategies and teaching conceptions presented in plannings and teachers‘ practices for both face-to-face and virtual environments. Along data discussion pedagogical strategies that contributing to the development of socio affective dimension are distinguished from those that do not contributing. Furthermore, interactionist strategies are differentiated from those considered conventionals. Results related to the autonomy (an aspect of socio affective dimension) show that teachers use strategies that contribute both to autonomy and heteronomy in their relationships with students. Antecipations concerning to intervention in interpersonal relationships and conflict management were not included in plannings for the virtual environment. On the other hand, the interest and the valorization social changes were contempled in the plannings and pedagogical practices. However, it was observed that teaching conceptions, choices and actions were little conscious and mainly based on experiences generalizations from teacher‘s practices without theoretical support. The results related to the courses pointed to the importance of providing to teachers experiences based on the principles that should be present in their pedagogical practices with the students. Conclusions suggested that to develop the socio affective dimension in teachers and students, it is necessary to include actions in teachers formation based on this perspective. Therefore, it will be possible to improve social relationships in face-toface and virtual environments.

Estilos de aprendizagem : buscando a sinergia

Lindemann, Vanessa January 2008 (has links)
The learning style indicates the preferences of the subject with regard to the learning strategies that could be used by the teacher in the construction of knowledge. The goal of the present paper is to investigate if previous knowledge of the learning styles by the students and by the teacher contributes towards aligning the efforts applied on the teaching and learning process and, consequently, towards improving the achieved result. In the case study conducted in three algorithm and programming groups, it was assumed that the pedagogical strategies employed by the teacher lead to synergy, provided the learning styles of the subjects are identified; the methodology used for achieving the goals, takes into consideration the predominant learning styles of the group; and the existence of a good interpersonal relationship between the teacher and the students. The analysis of the issue pointed to an interdependence between the predominant learning styles and the pedagogical strategies employed by the teachers, and other identifications include hints of observable teaching and learning activities that show coherence with the mapped styles. Therefore, the results accomplished, based on the study cases of this paper, reaffirm the general expectation of the benefits of knowledge over the learning styles for educational activities, especially with regard to an improvement of the teaching methods and the qualification of teacher actions.

Educational backgrounds and teaching styles of athletic training educators in entry-level CAAHEP accredited athletic training programs

Rich, Valerie J 01 June 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the educational backgrounds and teaching styles of athletic training educators and to see if a relationship existed between educational backgrounds and teaching styles. An electronic survey was e-mailed to 338 Program Directors of CAAHEP accredited undergraduate and graduate athletic training education programs. The survey was also posted on the athletic training educator's listserv to recruit more participants. The survey contained questions regarding demographics and educational history, as well as the Teaching Styles Inventory (Grasha, 2002). A total of 198 athletic training educators responded to the survey, and 174 filled out the survey in its entirety. An overwhelming majority of the participants were White (98%) and about 50% were male or female. Over half of the participants were program directors (59%) and 38% were at the assistant professor rank. Thirty-one percent were currently employed at a liberal arts instituti on. Most were employed in a College of Education (36%), working in a department of health, physical education, and recreation (25%). These athletic training educators had diverse educational backgrounds. A Bachelor of Science degree had been awarded to 78% of the respondents, and 33% of the Bachelor's degrees were in physical education. Forty-five percent did not have a minor degree. At the master's level, most of the degrees that had been awarded were Master's of Science (63%) and 23% were in athletic training/sports medicine. Most of the participants did not hold a post-graduate level degree (37%). Of those with a post-graduate degree, 27% held a Doctorate of Philosophy. Nine percent were in curriculum and instruction. On average, athletic training educators had been teaching for 8 years, had completed 8 courses in pedagogy, and had attended 8 workshops that were based on improving pedagogical practices. The predominant teaching style among athletic training educators was per sonal model (50%). Surprisingly, none of the participants had a delegator teaching style as their predominant style. The results of the MANOVA suggested that a significant relationship did not exist between educational backgrounds and teaching styles among these athletic training educators.

Surdo. Estratégias pedagógicas. Permanência. / ABSTRACT This research brings as object of investigation the perceptions of deaf students about pedagogic strategies that favor their process of permanence in Higher Education. This research was developed with deaf students (users of Language Brazilian of Signs- Libras and the Portuguese Oral Language) of the Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB) [Federal University of Recôncavo of Bahia], enrolled in the Licentiate Course in LibrasForeign Language. The methodological choice, of a qualitative nature, defines the way of the case study using the semistructured interview as a research tool, because it allows to capture the perceptions of deaf students about the efficiency of pedagogical strategies for their stay in the academic environment. The background that supported the analysis of the data collected was based on Brazilian legal and institutional norms of UFRB, and on authors such as: Vygotsky (1991, 1995); Pimentel (2007, 2012); Silva and Matos (2015); Skliar (2013); Quadros (2006), among others. The results showed that UFRB has developed actions aimed at guaranteeing the rights of deaf students, involving: the approval of institutional norms, the holding of a competition for professional interpreters of Libras and the offer of a course for the formation of servers. Concerning the pedagogical strategies, it was evidenced, from the perceptions of deaf students, that the teachers, for the most part, use strategies that meet their specificities. Such strategies involve: the use of didactic resources of a visual nature; the professor's slow interlocution to favor the understanding of the deaf oralized and the interpretation of the content of the lesson for Libras; the use of dictionary in class and the availability of time to search for new vocabularies; the emphasis of group work; differentiated methodological strategies, such as teaching in Libras. Such strategies were recognized by the deaf participants of the research as facilitators of the learning process and, therefore, of its permanence, although this is a practice adopted by the teachers.
