Latência e acurácia de respostas motoras a estímulos visuais em situações de estresse / Latency and accuracy of motor response to visual stimuli in stressMiyamoto, Nelson Toshiyuki 10 May 2010 (has links)
O estresse parece exercer uma influência negativa na tomada de decisão na execução de um movimento / The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of stress, caused by the presence of participative audience ,in the motor control. Stress was assessed by physiological measurements (heart rate and salivary cortisol). In each test the computer screen showed only a relatively small central circle (diameter 0.4 cm), a second circle the same size, located about 6.3 cm vertically below the central circle and a third circle on top the screen, about 4.1 cm vertically above the center circle. The three circles represent, respectively, the \"ball\", the \"kicker\" of the penalty and the \"keeper\". The task of the volunteer was tilting lever at the precise moment of contact, and if possible in the opposite direction to the movement of the goalkeeper. In the situation with stress, the error rate was around 25%.. Both the heart rate as salivary cortisol showed a statistically significant increase in the presence of spectators. The stress seems to exert a negative influence on decision making in the execution of a movement.

Optimal External Configuration Design Of MissilesTanil, Cagatay 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The main area of emphasis in this study is to investigate the methods and technology for aerodynamic configuration sizing of missiles and to develop a software platform in MATLAB® / environment as a design tool which has an ability of optimizing the external configuration of missiles for a set of flight requirements specified by the user through a graphical user interface. A genetic algorithm based optimization tool is prepared by MATLAB is expected to help the designer to find out the best external geometry candidates in the conceptual design stage. Missile DATCOM software package is employed to predict the aerodynamic coefficients needed in finding the performance merits of a missile for each external geometry candidate by integrating its dynamic equations of motion.
Numerous external geometry candidates are rapidly eliminated according to objectives and constraints specified by designers, which provide necessary information in preliminary design. In this elimination, the external geometry candidates are graded according to their flight performances in order to discover an optimum solution.
In the conceptual design, the most important performance objectives related to the external geometry of a missile are range, speed, maneuverability, and control effectiveness. These objectives are directly related to the equations of motion of the missile, concluding that the speed and flight range are related to the total mass and the drag-to-lift ratio acting on missile. Also, maneuverability depends on the normal force acting on missile body and mass whereas the control effectiveness is affected by pitching moment and mass moment of inertia of missile. All of the flight performance data are obtained by running a two degree-of-freedom simulation.
In order to solve the resulting multi-objective optimization problem with a set of constraint of linear and nonlinear nature and in equality and inequality forms, genetic-algorithm-based methods are applied. Hybrid encoding methods in which the integer configuration variables (i.e., nose shape and control type) and real-valued geometrical dimension (i.e., diameter, length) parameters are encoded in the same individual chromosome.
An external configuration design tool (EXCON) is developed as a synthesis and external sizing tool for the subsonic cruise missiles. A graphical user interface (GUI), a flight simulator and optimization modules are embedded into the tool. A numerical example, the re-configuration problem of an anti-ship cruise missile Harpoon, is presented to demonstrate the accuracy and feasibility of the conceptual design tool. The optimum external geometries found for different penalty weights of penalty terms in the cost function are compared according to their constraint violations and launch mass values. By means of using EXCON, the launch mass original baseline Harpoon is reduced by approximately 30% without deteriorating the other flight performance characteristics of the original Harpoon.

A Comparative Study Of Different Numerical Techniques Used For Solving Incompressible Fluid Flow ProblemsKumar, Rakesh 11 1900 (has links)
Past studies (primarily on steady state problems) that have compared the penalty and the velocity-pressure finite element formulations on a variety of problems have concluded that both methods yield solutions of comparable accuracy, and that the choice of one method over the other is dictated by which of the two is more efficient. In this work, we show that the penalty finite element method yields inaccurate solutions at large times on a class of transient problems, while the velocity-pressure formulation yields solutions that are in good agreement with the analytical solution. Numerical studies are conducted on various problems to compare these two formulations on the basis of rates of convergence, total number of equations to be solved and accuracy of results. We found that both formulations give almost the same rates of convergence in all problems, however the penalty formulation involves lesser number of equations than the velocity-pressure formulation due to implicit treatment of pressure field, and hence is more efficient. In some of the problems we have also compared a finite volume method with the penalty and velocity-pressure formulations on the basis of accuracy and computational cost.

Barring the Mentally Ill from the Death Penalty: A National SurveyDahl, Ronald Joseph 01 January 2009 (has links)
Many aspects of capital punishment have been debated extensively, such as its legality and cruelty. One such aspect is the role a defendant's mental functioning should play in the proceedings. In recent years the Supreme Court has barred the mentally retarded and juveniles from the death penalty due to their cognitive limitations and problems with behavioral control (Slobogin, 2003).
This reasoning has prompted many in the fields of mental health and law to advocate for a similar bar for offenders with severe mental illness since their impairments create similar problems in judgment and behavioral control. The Supreme Court cited public consensus as its grounds in banning the mentally retarded and juveniles from sentences of death; however, public consensus on mentally ill capital offenders is not quite as clear. Few attempts have gauged public opinion on sentencing severely mentally ill offenders to death, and the little research that does exist has produced conflicting results. While polls show that Americans oppose the death penalty for the severely mental ill (Gallup, 2008), the literature shows that jurors are more likely to sentence these defendants to death (Charlotte School of Law [CSL], 2006).
Second to the issue of barring the severely mentally ill from the death penalty is the issue of what mental health factors would be considered severe enough to qualify for a bar. There has been no previous research to gauge public opinion on these issues. Surveys were constructed to gauge opinion on the issue and were mailed randomly to 1,640 people throughout the United States. A total of 202 surveys were returned completed. Support was found for a bar from the death penalty for the mentally ill. However, the mental health factors that should comprise a bar received varied support and were less clear in determining which should comprise a bar. When given alternatives to a death sentence, participants overwhelmingly chose some type of life sentence. Public opinion appears to be an important aspect in the imposition of capital punishment upon the mentally ill.

The Effect of Mortality Salience on Death Penalty Sentencing Decisions when the Defendant is Severely Mentally Ill.Bandt-Law, Bryn 01 January 2016 (has links)
The nature of capital punishment cases makes mortality a highly salient factor during trial proceedings. Previous research has explored the effect of mortality salience on human’s decision making in a legal context. This study extends this vein of research by examining the role death plays in jurors’ psychological processes when sentencing a defendant who is severely mentally ill in a capital trial. The current experiment measured mock jurors’ (n=169) and college students’, n=116) Mental Illness Worldview (MIWV), and then experimentally manipulated type of mortality salience (dual-focused: mock jurors who were specifically asked to contemplate their own mortality and were exposed to trial-related death references vs. trial focused: only exposed to death references) and the type of defendant (severely mentally ill vs. neutral) accused of a capital offense. We found that mock jurors perceived mental illness to be a mitigating factor when dual (i.e., self) focused mortality salience was induced, whereas participants only exposed to trial-related death references considered mental illness to be an important aggravating factor in sentencing.

An Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Contract Frame and Discretion in Performance Evaluation on EffortEwing, Robert 01 January 2016 (has links)
The design of incentive compensation plans is critical to a company’s success. This study develops and validates a theoretical model to examine how incentive contract framing affects effort. This study uses an experiment to observe the effect of the manipulation of incentive contract frame and the presence or absence of principal discretion in performance evaluation on effort. The results of the experiment show that when principal discretion in performance evaluation is absent, penalty contracts induce greater effort than bonus contracts. The results of the experiment also demonstrate that the interaction of principal discretion in performance evaluation and contract frame influences how agents view the perceived fairness of their incentive contract. Specifically, principal discretion in performance evaluation increases perceived fairness under a penalty contract but not under a bonus contract. This study also extends prior research by documenting that perceived fairness explains how incentive contract frame affects trust and effort.
