Higher-Degree Immersed Finite Elements for Second-Order Elliptic Interface Problems

Ben Romdhane, Mohamed 16 September 2011 (has links)
A wide range of applications involve interface problems. In most of the cases, mathematical modeling of these interface problems leads to partial differential equations with non-smooth or discontinuous inputs and solutions, especially across material interfaces. Different numerical methods have been developed to solve these kinds of problems and handle the non-smooth behavior of the input data and/or the solution across the interface. The main focus of our work is the immersed finite element method to obtain optimal numerical solutions for interface problems. In this thesis, we present piecewise quadratic immersed finite element (IFE) spaces that are used with an immersed finite element (IFE) method with interior penalty (IP) for solving two-dimensional second-order elliptic interface problems without requiring the mesh to be aligned with the material interfaces. An analysis of the constructed IFE spaces and their dimensions is presented. Shape functions of Lagrange and hierarchical types are constructed for these spaces, and a proof for the existence is established. The interpolation errors in the proposed piecewise quadratic spaces yield optimal <i>O</i>(h³) and <i>O</i>(h²) convergence rates, respectively, in the L² and broken H¹ norms under mesh refinement. Furthermore, numerical results are presented to validate our theory and show the optimality of our quadratic IFE method. Our approach in this thesis is, first, to establish a theory for the simplified case of a linear interface. After that, we extend the framework to quadratic interfaces. We, then, describe a general procedure for handling arbitrary interfaces occurring in real physical practical applications and present computational examples showing the optimality of the proposed method. Furthermore, we investigate a general procedure for extending our quadratic IFE spaces to <i>p</i>-th degree and construct hierarchical shape functions for <i>p</i>=3. / Ph. D.

Lagrangian Relaxation / Dual Approaches For Solving Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems

Madabushi, Ananth R. 17 February 1997 (has links)
This research effort focuses on large-scale linear programming problems that arise in the context of solving various problems such as discrete linear or polynomial, and continuous nonlinear, nonconvex programming problems, using linearization and branch-and-cut algorithms for the discrete case, and using polyhedral outer-approximation methods for the continuous case. These problems arise in various applications in production planning, location-allocation, game theory, economics, and many engineering and systems design problems. During the solution process of discrete or continuous nonconvex problems using polyhedral approaches, one has to contend with repeatedly solving large-scale linear programming(LP) relaxations. Thus, it becomes imperative to employ an efficient method in solving these problems. It has been amply demonstrated that solving LP relaxations using a simplex-based algorithm, or even an interior-point type of procedure, can be inadequately slow ( especially in the presence of complicating constraints, dense coefficient matrices, and ill-conditioning ) in comparison with a Lagrangian Relaxation approach. With this motivation, we present a practical primal-dual subgradient algorithm that incorporates a dual ascent, a primal recovery, and a penalty function approach to recover a near optimal and feasible pair of primal and dual solutions. The proposed primal-dual approach is comprised of three stages. Stage I deals with solving the Lagrangian dual problem by using various subgradient deflection strategies such as the Modified Gradient Technique (MGT), the Average Direction Strategy (ADS), and a new direction strategy called the Modified Average Direction Strategy (M-ADS). In the latter, the deflection parameter is determined based on the process of projecting the unknown optimal direction onto the space spanned by the current subgradient direction and the previous direction. This projected direction approximates the desired optimal direction as closely as possible using the conjugate subgradient concept. The step-length rules implemented in this regard are the Quadratic Fit Line Search Method and a new line search method called the Directional Derivative Line Search Method in which we start with a prescribed step-length and then ascertain whether to increase or decrease the step-length value based on the right-hand and left-hand derivative information available at each iteration. In the second stage of the algorithm (Stage II), a sequence of updated primal solutions is generated using some convex combinations of the Lagrangian subproblem solutions. Alternatively, a starting primal optimal solution can be obtained using the complementary slackness conditions. Depending on the extent of feasibility and optimality attained, Stage III applies a penalty function method to improve the obtained primal solution toward a near feasible and optimal solution. We present computational experience using a set of randomly generated, structured, linear programming problems of the type that might typically arise in the context of discrete optimization. / Master of Science

The Use of Probabilistic Risk Functions and Linear Penalty Functions for Hospital Evacuation Planning

Soeffker, Ninja 20 November 2014 (has links)
In Bish et al. (2014), two approaches for the generation of hospital evacuation transportation plans were proposed: the minimization of the overall risk and the minimization of the evacuation duration. The resulting evacuation plans differ in terms of overall risk and duration, but also in the evacuation order of patients with different characteristics, the filling of hospital beds, and the assignments of the patients to the various vehicle types. Due to the computational effort of the duration minimization, manipulations of the risk functions for the risk minimization approach were searched in this thesis such that the resulting evacuation plans approach the minimal duration without rules for the assignments of patients to vehicle types. It is possible to create risk functions such that the resulting plans have shorter durations than with the basic risk functions, but the overall risk increases and other properties of the plans change. Furthermore, a new objective function was introduced in this thesis that minimizes an overall penalty function, where penalties are incurred for time intervals in which patients are at the evacuating hospital or being transported. The characteristics of the patients are considered by different weights in the penalty function. For the given problem instance, it is possible to choose penalty factors such that the overall risk is close to the minimal risk or to choose them such that the duration decreases. It is a simple approach with run times that are comparable to the risk minimization approach for the given problem instance. / Master of Science

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabio Souza Trubilhano.pdf: 1130867 bytes, checksum: 8e6c770fc8798722dd7010a7901e4c00 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-12-02 / The present work objective is the study goal about the payment penalty clause and its limitations in Brazilian and foreign law, especially german, French and Italian civil code. As regards the Brazilian law, this study focuses on the general rule in the civil code and in the legislations dealing with specific on limitation of penalty. The objective of this work is to highlight the values that underpin the rules which stipulate limitations to contractual fines both as regards the general rules as the specific business as well as a comparative study between the Brazilian legal system and the foreign law and about the general rules for the limitation and reduction of the penalty clause. The reason of studying this subject is the wide use of conventional penalty daily in business, in the most variety forms of contracts, the advantages and the disadvantages of limiting the fine under contract. The work is present, because not only in Brazil but also in several countries the debate is fecund, and doctors study and discuss the theme. The methods of approach used in this research were the hypothetical-deductive and dialectical; methods of procedure, essentially, the historic, comparative and structuralist; and bibliographic research, involving doctrine, homeland and foreign legislation and jurisprudence. The results confirm the hypothesis that the Brazilian legislation, in determining a general rule to the limit of the fine contractual, avoids, up the of conclusion of the contract, the disparity in fixing the quantum of the penalty clause, and also confirm, that limitations differentiated for the penalty clause, by reason of special legislation, considering the social and economic objectives in each modality of business, and also the fact that the greater the limit, more protected will be the debtor, but less strong will be the main mandatory vinculum / A presente dissertação tem por objeto de estudo a cláusula penal e suas limitações no direito brasileiro e no direito estrangeiro, em especial nos códigos civis alemão, francês e italiano.

Les Sanctions en Droit du travail : Etude comparative entre le droit français et le droit malien du travail / Penalty in labor law : compartive study of french law and the law of Mali

Sangare, Yacouba 16 November 2012 (has links)
The punishment in labor lawSUMMARYMy thesis relates to the study of the right Malian compared to the law the labour French. Mali being an old French colony, there are strong resemblances between the two rights to the level of the definition of applicable sanctions. But the application of the sanctions in these two countries is not made same manner. That is explained for corporate names, cultural and economic. To illustrate the points of convergences and divergences between these two rights, it was necessary to us to analyze the civil sanctions, administrative and penal in the two countries on the basis of in entirety of the law the labour French of before the reform of the law of bearing 13 July 1973 on the control of the real and serious cause of the dismissal until our days in particular the law of June 28 2008 studies on the modernization of the labour market with the example of the article L 1237-11 bearing conventional rupture of the contract of employmentOf this comparison, it appeared relevant to me to make suggestions to improve the law the labour Malian to the image of the French right all while adapting it preparatory project single of the O.H.A.D.A on the law the labour African because of the development of the economic and social market of the world and the place that y occupies in West Africa. By what our fair labor standards act goes back to 1992 and which since this date no reforms significant was not operated.

Smluvní pokuta - frekventovaný prostředek zajištění závazkových vztahů / Contractual penalty – the frequent type of security

Šedová, Klára January 2010 (has links)
Contractual penalty is an effective and in practice often used type of security. However, we cannot consider the Czech legal regulation of the contractual penalty as ideal and there have been many difficulties connected with the application of this instrument. The thesis aims at clarification of the functions of contractual penalty, conditions for its valid and effective creation and consequences of the excessive sum of contractual penalty. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the relation between contractual penalty and other legal instruments and finally also on comparison with other types of security. Main legal sources of the final thesis are court decisions, especially judgments of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic. In the thesis there are used methods of historical and comparative interpretation.
