Optimising 3D object destruction tools for improved performance and designer efficiency in video game development

Background. In video game development, efficient destruction tools and workflows were crucial for creating engaging gaming environments. This study delved into the fundamental principles of 3D object properties and interactions, reviewed existing destruction techniques, and offered insights into their practical application, with a specific focus on Embark Studios’ destruction tool.  Objectives. This study focused on the optimisation of an existing destruction tool to enhance efficiency and integration within a gaming company’s pipeline. The key objectives included reducing execution time, and improving designer workflow. The study utilised performance counters and Unreal Insights profiling to identify and optimise hotspots in the destruction tool. Additionally, the performance of the op- timised tool was measured and compared to the existing one to quantify efficiency improvements. An expert evaluation with designers at Embark Studios was con- ducted to assess the impact of the optimised tool on their workflow.  Methods. The existing destruction tool was optimised primarily through parallelisation. The efficiency of the optimised tool was evaluated both empirically, by measuring the execution time, and subjectively, through an expert evaluation involv- ing three professional level designers.  Results. The optimisation significantly reduced the execution time of the destruc- tion tool. Feedback from the expert evaluation indicated that the optimised tool could enhance designer efficiency, particularly in rebuilding the destruction graphs. However, the performance of the optimised tool was found to be hardware-dependent, with varying execution times observed across different hardware configurations. Conclusions. This study presented an optimised destruction tool which demon- strated improved performance and efficiency, validating its suitability for integration into the pipeline of game development. It was proposed that future work could further optimise this tool and explore its performance across diverse hardware con- figurations.

A Novel Approach of Modelling and Predicting Track Cycling Sprint Performance

In cycling, performance models are used to investigate factors that determine performance and to optimise competition results. We present an innovative and easily applicable mathematical model describing time-resolved approaches for both the physical aspects of tractional resistance and the physiological side of propelling force generated by muscular activity and test its validity to reproduce and forecast time trials in track cycling. Six elite track cyclists completed a special preparation and two sprint time trials in an official velodrome under continuous measurement of crank force and cadence. Fatigue-free force-velocity profiles were calculated, and their fatigue-induced changes were determined by non-linear regression analysis using a monoexponential equation at a constant slope. Model parameters were calibrated based on pre-exercise performance testing and the first of the two time-trials and then used to predict the performance of the second sprint. Measured values for power output and cycling velocity were compared to the modelled data. The modelled results were highly correlated to the measured values (R2>0.99) without any difference between runs (p>0.05; d<0.1). Our mathematical model can accurately describe sprint track cycling time trial performance. It is simple enough to be used in practice yet sufficiently accurate to predict highly dynamic maximal sprint performances. It can be employed for the evaluation of completed runs, to forecast expected results with different setups, and to study various contributing factors and quantify their effect on sprint cycling performance.

Exergy based SI engine model optimisation : exergy based simulation and modelling of bi-fuel SI engine for optimisation of equivalence ratio and ignition time using artificial neural network (ann) emulation and particle swarm optimisation (PSO)

In this thesis, exergy based SI engine model optimisation (EBSIEMO) is studied and evaluated. A four-stroke bi-fuel spark ignition (SI) engine is modelled for optimisation of engine performance based upon exergy analysis. An artificial neural network (ANN) is used as an emulator to speed up the optimisation processes. Constrained particle swarm optimisation (CPSO) is employed to identify parameters such as equivalence ratio and ignition time for optimising of the engine performance, based upon maximising 'total availability'. In the optimisation process, the engine exhaust gases standard emission were applied including brake specific CO (BSCO) and brake specific NOx (BSNOx) as the constraints. The engine model is developed in a two-zone model, while considering the chemical synthesis of fuel, including 10 chemical species. A computer code is developed in MATLAB software to solve the equations for the prediction of temperature and pressure of the mixture in each stage (compression stroke, combustion process and expansion stroke). In addition, Intake and exhaust processes are calculated using an approximation method. This model has the ability to simulate turbulent combustion and compared to computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models it is computationally faster and efficient. The selective outputs are cylinder temperature and pressure, heat transfer, brake work, brake thermal and volumetric efficiency, brake torque, brake power (BP), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), concentration of CO2, brake specific CO (BSCO) and brake specific NOx (BSNOx). In this model, the effect of engine speed, equivalence ratio and ignition time on performance parameters using gasoline and CNG fuels are analysed. In addition, the model is validated by experimental data using the results obtained from bi-fuel engine tests. Therefore, this engine model was capable to predict, analyse and useful for optimisation of the engine performance parameters. The exergy based four-stroke bi-fuel (CNG and gasoline) spark ignition (SI) engine model (EBSIEM) here is used for analysis of bi-fuel SI engines. Since, the first law of thermodynamic (the FLT), alone is not able to afford an appropriate comprehension into engine operations. Therefore, this thesis concentrates on the SI engine operation investigation using the developed engine model by the second law of thermodynamic (the SLT) or exergy analysis outlook (exergy based SI engine model (EBSIEM)) In this thesis, an efficient approach is presented for the prediction of total availability, brake specific CO (BSCO), brake specific NOx (BSNOx) and brake torque for bi-fuel engine (CNG and gasoline) using an artificial neural network (ANN) model based on exergy based SI engine (EBSIEM) (ANN-EBSIEM) as an emulator to speed up the optimisation processes.
