Peri-Urban Land Tenure in Ethiopia

Gashu Adam, Achamyeleh January 2014 (has links)
Urban areas in Ethiopia have been growing very quickly in recent decades, which haveled to ever increasing demand for land in peri-urban areas for housing and other nonagriculturalactivities. This has had several transformative impacts on the transitionalperi-urban, areas including engulfment of local communities and conversion of landrights and use from an agricultural to a built-up property rights system. Peri-urban areasalso display all forms of competition for land among people of diverse backgrounds.Research on the challenges of urbanization in peri-urban land tenure system and theongoing changes in Ethiopia is limited, and the situations and actors interested in periurbanland are constantly changing. Therefore, the purpose of this research is toinvestigate the challenges imposed on peri-urban land rights as a result of the growingdemand for land for urbanization. The project also encompasses an attempt to discoverthe process of informal transaction and development of peri-urban land and the principalactors involved. The study comprises a summary essay and four articles which were conducted using casestudy and desk review research approaches. Following the case study tradition, acombination of different data collection instruments such as questionnaires, FGDs, keyinformant interviews (both structured and open-ended) and direct field observations wasemployed to collect research data from the case study areas. Bahir Dar CityAdministration was selected purposively as case study area at the first stage and two periurbanvillages, Weramit and Zenzelima, were selected from Bahir Dar CityAdministration at the second stage of the case study area selection process. The research has revealed that urbanization and urban development in Ethiopia areaccompanied by contentious land tenure changes which favor the urbanities above localperi-urban communities. As a result, urbanization has precipitated a wave ofdispossession and proliferation of informal settlements in peri-urban areas. Thus, addressing the challenges of urbanization and its effect on the land rights of local periurbancommunities requires the introduction of an inclusive and participatory landdevelopment tool like land readjustment, which can encourage voluntary contribution ofland for urbanization by the local peri-urban landholders themselves. / <p>QC 20150114</p>

Wuhan's Changing Peri-urban Zone: The Case of Dongxihu District

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Peri-urbanization is a process in which previously rural areas on the outskirts of established cities become more urban in character. This process is of great significance in China, because peri-urbanization is often manufacturing and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) driven. After witnessing the dramatic development of the Eastern Coastal Region from the mid-1980s, China recently changed its regional development focus to interior regions to pursue more spatial equity within the nation. Wuhan, as the most populous city in central China, is experiencing significant peri-urbanization. The thesis focuses on Dongxihu District, a representative peri-urban area in Wuhan Municipality. To explore peri-urbanization in Dongxihu, this study first documents the metrics of ongoing peri-urbanization in the District from land use, economic, demographic and institutional perspectives. Causality is explored by relating peri-urban outcomes to drivers within the framework of research questions, namely: (i) What is driving peri-urban change in Dongxihu? (ii) Which drivers of peri-urbanization in the District are most important? (iii) How can Dong Xi Hu's peri-urbanization process and outcomes best be characterized? and (iv) What policy implications can be drawn from Dong Xi Hu's peri-urbanization experience? The primary conclusion is that Dongxihu's peri-urbanization is primarily manufacturing driven, resembling previous first generation peri-urbanization on the coast more than the more diverse peri-urban outcomes now emerging in wealthy coastal metropolitan areas, e.g., Shanghai. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Urban and Environmental Planning 2016

Avaliação dos tecidos peri-implantares : estudos clínicos /

Nícoli, Lélis Gustavo. January 2018 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to assess the incidence of peri-implant diseases and how they can be associated to possible risk factors. Two different approaches were addressed. Through a retrospective study, survival and success rates of implants with acid-etched-treated surface were initially evaluated in 44 patients, with 183 implants, in function for 8 to 10 years. Analysis included demographic, systemic and behavioral data, followed by one-session radiographic, periodontal and peri-implant clinical evaluations. This first study yielded survival and success rates of 97.3% and 84.7%, respectively, for the 183 investigated implants. Among the surviving implants, 51% were affected by mucosite and 11%, by peri-implantitis. A second study was also carried out to prospectively investigate mucosite incidence as well as peri-implantar bone loss in 180 implants, placed in 56 patients, after 1 year of function, which were assessed by clinical periodontal and peri-implant examinations, followed by standardized peri-apical radiographs, carried out 15 days after installation of the prosthesis, and at 3, 6 and 12 months of function. This observation revealed a 44.8% rate of peri-implant mucosite; however, no case of peri-implantitis was found. Implants with an intern-hexagon platform were significantly more affected by mucositis after one year of observation. In addition, a mean peri-implant bone-loss of 0.35 ± 1.89 mm was detected, however none of the patient or implant-related... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

salmo, Nahra January 2020 (has links)
Metod: sökningar gjordes på relevanta sökord i databaserna Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source (DOSS), CINAHL OCH Medline i februari 2020. Resultat: 13 vetenskapliga artiklar ingick i denna studie.

Change in Local Places: the experince of a peri urban community

Wright, Jason John January 2006 (has links)
ABSTRACT This thesis explores change in place, and particularly the social tensions that arise from change in peri-urban communities. In this study, a review of relevant literature indicates that rural/urban fringe areas are dynamic places, as pressure for the conversion of rural land uses to rural residential function creates social and economic anxiety. With pressure for change, tensions between people, both inside and outside of the local community become more clearly articulated, as change for some members of the community is an un-welcomed progression. Others, who may have no association with the local community, grasp the opportunity for change, particularly if financial return is the end reward. This study considers various approaches to the analysis of these changes in place and develops a methodology that reveals the social dimension of change, and more particularly the tensions associated with shifting land use patterns and changing demographic characteristics in the peri-urban location of Matangi.

Myocardial injury in abdominal aortic surgery

Haggart, Paul C. January 2003 (has links)
Background:  Peri-operative myocardial infarction (PMI) may be under- and/or mis-diagnosed because WHO criteria are often not met and creatinine kinase (CK/CK-MB) ratios can be difficult to interpret.  Cardiac troponin (cTn) I is the most sensitive and specific marker of myocardial cell necrosis but is not yet widely available. Aims: 1.  To examine the use of pre-operative risk indices, including ASA score, POSSUM score and Goldman’s cardiac risk index and compare these with peri-operative cTnI rise. 2.  To compare cTnI levels with CK/CK-MB levels peri-operatively in the diagnosis of MI. 3.  To explore the role of the fibrinolytic system in patients undergoing emergency surgery for ruptured aneurysm and relate this to cTnI levels. 4.  To examine the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the identification of bacteraemia and to relate this to systemic endotoxin levels and septic episodes. Methods:  Prospective observational study of 67 patients undergoing aortic surgery (29 elective AAA, 31 emergency AAA, 7 aorto-occlusive).  cTnI and endotoxin were measured pre-operatively and at 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours postoperatively.  Blood for PCR was also collected at these time points.  CK and CK-MB were measured where cTnI was detectable.  Fibrinolytic markers were measured up to 24 hours post operatively.  Clinical, septic, ECG and cardiac events were prospectively documented. Results:  ASA score was correlated with perioperative cTnI rise.  Over 50%<i> </i>of patients undergoing emergency, and more than a quarter undergoing elective, aortic surgery will suffer myocardial injury as determined by cTnI rise.  This is accompanied by CK/ CK-MB ratio in less than a fifth of cases.  eTnI rise is associated with inhibition of fibrinolysis with emergency AAA repair.  No relationships were observed with the presence of bacterial DNA, endotoxin response and sepsis.

The aim of this study was to identify systemic and local risk indicators associated with peri-implantitis (PI) and its prevalence. Inclusion criteria for the study were patients treated with osseointegrated implants (Implacil De Bortoli, Sao Paulo, Brazil) at FUNDECTO (University of Sao Paulo, USP), from 1998 to 2012. There were examined 183 patients, rehabilitated with 916 implants in function for 1 year at least. Variables were evaluated according to patient's systemic condition, implant's characteristics, prosthetic crown and clinical parameters. Logistic regression did not show any association between implant's characteristics with PI. Also, it was identified an increased risk of 2.20 times for historic of periodontal disease (PD), 3.62 times for cemented restorations compared to screw-retained, 2.43 times when displayed wear facets on the prosthetic crown and 16.11 times for total rehabilitations when compared to single rehabilitations. There were related as risk indicators for PI the historic of periodontal disease, cemented prostheses, presence of wear facets on the prosthetic crown and in total rehabilitations. Implants' characteristics were not related with PI.
