The Relationship between Personality Traits and Career Satisfaction of Front-Line Retail Workers

Compton, Mary J. 16 April 2019 (has links)
<p> To identify factors that contribute to career satisfaction of front-line retail workers, a quantitative correlational study was used to determine the relationship of the five-factor model (e.g., agreeableness, extraversion, openness, emotional stability, conscientiousness) and narrow traits (e.g., work drive, tough-mindedness, optimism, intrinsic motivation, customer service orientation, assertiveness) on career satisfaction of front-line workers. This study determined if the inclusion of narrow traits explain a variance in career satisfaction above and beyond the five factor model traits. This study provided empirical evidence established on the theoretical foundation of the five-factor model, allowing for a deeper understanding of traits as they relate to and predict worker satisfaction. The participants of the study were 112 retail workers from the Texas Retailers Association membership of Texas, who were selected using a volunteer sampling. Pearson r correlation and hierarchical analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Pearson <i> r</i> correlation determined that agreeableness (<i>r</i> = .25), extraversion (<i>r</i> = .26), emotional stability (<i> r</i> = &ndash;.29), optimism (<i>r</i> = .37), and customer service orientation (<i>r</i> = .24) had statistically significant relationships with career satisfaction (<i>p</i> &lt; .05). A hierarchical regression analysis determined that narrow traits explained 12.9% of the variance in career satisfaction. The findings of this study provided recommendations that will be beneficial for hiring entities such as human resources on hiring the worker who will be satisfied in their front-line career, based on personality traits. This study helped to understand personality traits of satisfied workers and the traits that measure satisfaction in the front-line retail environment. </p><p>

Two languages, two personalities?: examining language effects on personality in the bilingual context. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2007 (has links)
The present study investigated the impact of language use on self-perceived personality and personality as perceived by others in the bilingual Chinese-English context. We used a repeated-measures design and collected data at three time points from written measures and experimental settings, to examine whether bilinguals (n = 76) exhibit different patterns of personality characteristics, each associated with one of the two languages and interlocutor ethnicity, and to delineate such discrepancies using behavioral observations in addition to self-reports. By analyzing ratings by targets, interlocutors, and observers, our findings confirmed perception effects, language effects, and ethnicity effects on various personality dimensions, such as extraversion, openness to experience and assertiveness. We suggest that using a second language accesses the perceived cultural norms in which it is applied, especially the prototypic personality profiles in that culture, thus activating behavioral expressions of personality that are appropriate in the corresponding linguistic-social context. / Chen , Xiaohua Sylvia. / "July 2007." / Adviser: Michael Harris Bond. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-01, Section: B, page: 0728. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 60-70). / Electronic reproduction. Materialism, personal well-being and environmental behaviour : cross-national and longitudinal evidence from the UK and Chile

Unanue, Wenceslao January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates how materialism is related to personal well-being, as well as to environmental behaviour. I tested key assumptions in the field, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, in two samples of adults from two different cultures, the UK – an established mass consumer society – and Chile – a fast-growing economy. Results are presented in the form of three papers. Using a cross-sectional analysis, I showed in Paper 1 that materialism was associated with lower levels of well-being in both countries. Importantly, both need satisfaction and need frustration mediated the link between materialism and well-being. Notably, need frustration played an incremental explanatory role, above and beyond the role of need satisfaction. In Paper 2, I explored the hypothesized link between need satisfaction/frustration and well-being in greater depth. Employing a cross-lagged longitudinal design over 3 years, I found that in both countries, higher total need satisfaction (versus frustration) was a significant prospective predictor of higher well-being. However, when separate needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness were distinguished, only relatedness reached statistical significance in the UK, and none of the three needs individually predicted well-being in Chile. In both countries, need satisfaction prospectively predicted positive well-being, and in the UK, need frustration prospectively predicted negative well-being. Finally, I found a bi-directional link between total need satisfaction and subjective well-being in both countries. These results point towards a better integration of research into hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. In Paper 3, I showed, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, that a higher relative importance placed on extrinsic (versus intrinsic) life goals was a negative antecedent of environmentally responsible behaviour, even while controlling for effects of environmental worldviews and environmental identification. Taken together, these results show the negative effects of materialistic values and life goals in both people's well-being and in the future of our the natural environment.

Dissociation/Schizotypy, Unusual Sleep Experiences, and Emotion Regulation

Atchie, Mackenzie 31 January 2019 (has links)
<p> Past research has indicated that dissociation and schizotypy are highly correlated (Merckelbach &amp; Giesbrecht, 2006; Watson, 2001). Although somewhat controversial, some research has suggested that dissociation and schizotypy traits constitute a unique personality domain often referred to as "oddity" (Watson, Clark, &amp; Chmielewski, 2008). Past research has provided evidence for a relationship between these oddity facets and unusual sleep experiences, such as narcolepsy symptoms and nightmares (Koffel &amp; Watson, 2009). It has been suggested that "unusual cognitive and perceptual experiences" may be the common theme that connects these concepts (Watson, 2001). In addition to the connection between oddity and sleep experiences, some studies have examined the influence of sleep disturbance, namely insomnia, on emotion regulation (Palmer &amp; Alfano, 2017). The relationship between emotion regulation and unusual sleep disturbances is an area that has yet to be explored in the existing literature. Furthermore, studies concerning the relationship between emotion regulation and oddity are scarce. Lastly, how oddity, emotion regulation, and unusual sleep disturbances relate to one another has yet to be defined. This study found that unusual sleep disturbances and dissociation / schizotypy had a significant relationship with suppression. Overall, this study adds to the existing literature by building a foundation for future researchers concerning the relationships between these variables.</p><p>
