Gosselin, Sebastien, Shahmoorad, Arby January 2012 (has links)

Recent Advances in Heteroatom-Stabilized Carbanion Chemistry

Das, Priyabrata 08 1900 (has links)
An efficient, stereoselective method for the synthesis of α-phosphonoenamines based on a modified Peterson olefination was developed. The carbanion derived from Diethyl 1-dimethylamino-1-trimethylsilylmethanophosphonate reacted with aromatic or aliphatic aldehydes selectively eliminating in Peterson fashion to deliver functionally rich α-phosphonoenamines. A highly efficient method was developed for the one-carbon homologation of aldehydes to carboxylic acid derivatives employing the reaction of a 1, 1-bis-dimethylphosphonate derivative with the aldehyde and controlled acid hydrolysis of the derived α-phosphonoenamine intermediate. The reaction of bis(trimethylsilyl)chloromethane with s-BuLi was found to proceed via transmetallation rather than deprotonation yielding the nucleophilic bistrimethylsilylmethyl anion quantitatively which reacted readily with aldehydes providing a general entry to vinylsilanes. The reaction of α-silylated ylides with non-enolizable aldehydes proceeded via selective Peterson-type elimination, in contrast to prior literature reports, providing a direct route to synthetically useful vinylphosphonium salts. The chemoselective formation of trialkylbenzyl phosphoranes in water and their Wittig reaction with aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes provided a practical, stereoselective and environmentally benign route to valuable trans-stilbenes and alkenes. The synthesis of the phytoalexin resveratrol was described. In addition, the method allowed for a gramscale synthesis of the anticancer agent DMU-212 utilizing no organic solvent at any stage. A direct synthesis of 1,3-dienes and 1,3,5-trienes from the reaction of semi-stabilized ylides and a range of saturated and unsaturated aldehydes was reported in water as solvent, employing sodium hydroxide as base. The water-soluble phosphine oxide side product was removed simply by aqueous partitioning of the organic products. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

O problema teológico-político: um diálogo entre o jurista Carls Schmitt e o teólogo Erik Peterson / The Theological-Political Problem: a dialogue between the jurist Carl Schmitt and the theologue Erik Peterson

Jorge, Leonardo Carrilho 19 June 2019 (has links)
This research aims to examine the theological-political problem of sovereignty, from the idea that theological conceptions of an era are intrinsically connected with the meaning of political institutions. The main literature on Political Theology was produced in Germany in the 20th century and it is still underestimated in Brazil. The thoughts on the place of Political Theology in the framework of Science or Religion - on its use as a hermeneutic tool of historical concepts - serve as a glossary for the general concepts and author\'s definitions of \"Theology\", \"Politics\", \"Science\" and \"Religion\". In Political Theology (1922), Carl Schmitt writes about the concept of sovereignty - and its implicit ramifications in the thesis of secularization is usefull as a starting point for further discussions with Erik Peterson on the theological \"liquidation\" of all Political Theology. Sovereignty in Schmitt is conceived as a non-positivist and counter-revolutionary sociological category, in the structural analogy of the state of exception as a miracle and in the parallel between God and the State. The biographical survey of the two authors, as well as the correspondence between them, reveals important details about the change of interpretation of certain concepts in their time. In the 1930s, Peterson\'s theological treatises were not only aimed at the theological-political theses of his friend (and intellectual rival), but represented an scholarly study to understand and refute the exceptional situation of his time. Only many years after the publication of these texts by Peterson, in Political Theology II (1970), Schmitt tried to refute Peterson\'s arguments, who though was already dead. The task of this investigation is to reconstruct this dialogue, showing the main conclusions of these authors and their points of convergence and divergence, highlighting the relevance of the studies of Political Theology as a source of intellectual stimulus to think about the present and, if possible, to prevent against the setbacks of the future.

Masculinity in a time of crisis : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Professor Jordan Peterson in YouTube Shorts format / Masculinity in a time of crisis : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Professor Jordan Peterson in YouTube Shorts format

Carlsson, Elis January 2023 (has links)
The topic of masculinity is something that has a lot of research done on it with it covering different spectrums of masculinity and how it affects society. Media has always played a part in how society is shaped and what is valued and therefore has had its effect on how masculinity is viewed. Today however social media has taken an important spot for both political and societal topics for younger individuals (Zimmerman, 2020), meaning more power for the individuals who create this type of content as they are seen as role models by their audience (Zimmerman, 2020). There are a few big creators who cover the topic of masculinity with one of them being Jordan Peterson. The format of short videos has exploded in popularity on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram but as it is a newer format of video less research has been done on the topic of masculinity and the material of shorts. This thesis will analyse videos in the form of shorts where Jordan Peterson is present with an aim of getting an understanding what type of masculinity is being presented as there are several different types of masculinity that have different traits. The thesis will also look for a connection between what is presented in the videos and the crisis of masculinity which refers to that there is something that is troubling men in today’s society (McDowell, 2000). In the end the findings will be presented which indicate that there is a connection between what is being said in the videos and the crisis of masculinity as well as several examples that highlight both hegemonic masculinity, toxic masculinity, and patriarchal power structures.
