Poetry by post

Capp, Laura 01 December 2013 (has links)
Poetry by Post is a four-month poetry subscription service that will run from November of 2013 to February of 2014. I will produce one mailing per month that will include a letterpress-printed broadside that features a poem of my choosing and an accompanying literary analysis and reply postcard, also letterpress-printed, all contained within calligraphed envelopes and posted with vintage stamps. Subscriptions are available at $150 for the series or $50 for an individual mailing and will not exceed 50 in number. The inaugural Poetry by Post will feature Midwestern poets Jennie Kinneberg Wrisley, Eric McHenry, Catherine Tufariello, and Ted Kooser. I have taken "Midwestern" to mean anyone who has simply spent a good bit of time in the large swath of land in the middle of the U.S. And much like the Midwest, the poetry featured will be plainspoken but no less profound for that.

The utility of philately in comparative education and the analysis of higher education systems

Luff, Debra Jean 01 January 1998 (has links) (PDF)
Philately is an original source which has been unexamined as a research tool in comparative education. This study investigated the possibility of formulating ideas and concepts about higher education by developing case studies on Japan, Kenya and the USSR. Each case study compared the interpretation of the postage stamps and dedications issued with an analysis of comparative education literature. Wilson's comparative education framework was used to assess the thoroughness of each approach. The comparative education journals used in this research included: Comparative Education Review (1957 to present), Comparative Education (1964 to present), and the International Review of Education (1955 to present). The analysis of philately required developing useful questions as a heuristic device. The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: Cognitive Domain (Bloom, 1956) was used to devise sample questions which extended the comparative education literature in useful ways. The philatelic questions formed a link between the comparative education literature and International Education which enhanced both fields. Philatelic analysis highlighted culturally important events useful for both comparative education and international education. It is appropriate to note that Wilson's categories of national characteristics and socializing agents was expanded by this research to include a country's traditional values (Japan), sought values (Kenya) and propaganda (USSR). The case studies indicated new ways to examine comparative education through Wilson's framework and established the value of philately as a research tool for comparative education researchers.

La création artistique : le timbre-poste français gravé en taille-douce de 1928 à nos jours / Artistic creation : the French postage stamp engraved in intaglio from 1928 to the present day

Nowacka, Monika 12 January 2017 (has links)
Many artists, some more famous than others, have worked for the postal administration since 1928, the year of the first issue of an engraved French postage stamp . This technique, which became the most important method of creating postage stamps in France, developed and reached a peak in the 1930s and continued until the 1970s. During this time all postage stamps, with few exceptions, were engraved by artists. Gradually, however, the emergence of new manufacturing processes, such as heliogravure, offset printing and computer-aided engraving, replaced traditional engraving. Also, the stamping device, a steel plate that served as a support for the engraver, was gradually replaced by electromechanical and photochemical processes making it possible to obtain much lower turnaround times and manufacturing costs and was probably better suited to industrial production. This study presents an analysis of the development of the art of engraving, its place and its role in Philately during a specific period, from 1928 to the present day. The status of the engraver and his artistic recognition changed along with the status of the postal administration, its policy and its needs in response to the economic demands of the market. The in-depth review of philatelic creations, orders governed by strict specifications, working conditions and the investment of stamp engravers in their craft, has made it possible to show the aesthetic and plastic features of their work and secure them a place in the art world.

The advancement in analytical instrumentation allows today faster and more efficient chemical analysis. The development of new methods with regards to minimize or eliminate sample preparation steps has a great advantage over traditional procedures. Two techniques stand out in this concept: the ambient ionization mass spectrometry and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. With different characteristics, both techniques cover a huge range of applications in analytical chemistry. Following this idea, this thesis is divided into three parts that demonstrates some applications using the techniques mentioned earlier. The first chapter describes the production and characterization of functionalized porous silicon surfaces as substrates for desorption ionization electrospray mass spectrometry (DESI-MS). The results showed that specific surfaces provides an excellent alternative for spot analysis in DESI-MS, increasing detectability, eliminating cross-contamination problems and improving the analytical signal stability. The next chapter reports the development of a portable ambient ionization source for mass spectrometry, which eliminates the use of gas cylinders and injection pumps. Its efficiency was confirmed by analysis of several compounds leading to prospects for field applications; using for example with miniaturized mass spectrometers. Finally, the last chapter demonstrates the use of X-ray fluorescence in philately. The method developed is nondestructive and is a suitable technique to detect elements related with the composition of inks that are used to print stamps. For this reason, this is a powerful methodology to identify counterfeit samples of rare stamps mainly / Doutorado / Quimica Analitica / Doutor em Ciências
