Self-concept of the physically disabled in inclusive secondary schools.

Airat, Sulaiman Afolasade. January 2003 (has links)
This study assessed and described the self-concept of adolescents with physically disabilities in inclusive secondary schools, in Lagos state, Nigeria. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed to generate information and to answer the critical questions posed for this study. The choice of methodological triangulation was based on the complex nature of self-concept and the philosophical perception of "self", especially as it relates to the Nigerian cultural society. The instruments used to collect data, were the Self-Concept Scale (SCS), which measured the respondents' self-concept from the perspective of others' judgement of them and the Student Problem Inventory (SPI), which measured the respondents' self-concept from the perspective of their own judgements of themselves. Academic Achievement (ACA) obtained from the students academic records was used to determine the relationship between academic achievement and self-concept. Semi-Structured Interviews and Observations were used to obtain complementary data, and to further assess the elements of the self-concept, which were not assessed on SCS and SPI. The purpose of interview was also to allow the physically disabled to tell their stories which expressed the development of their self-concept overtime. Results of the study revealed that the physically disabled description of their self-concept is low or negative. It was found that many factors influenced their negative self-concept, which includes the attitudes of the society towards the disabled, their socio-economic status, their schooling condition and above all the way in which they internalised these actions and reactions from their environment. Results also revealed no gender differences in self-concept. Statistically significant relationship was however found between academic achievement and the self-concept. A statistically significant relationship was also found between respondents' personal problems and their academic achievement. Respondents with positive perception of school had high self-concept and those with negative perception of school had low or negative self-concept. It was suggested that researchers should create more interest in the study of physically disabled students, particularly those in inclusive secondary schools and more concern should be shown to the investigation of other factors that could affect the behaviour of this group of disabled. It was also recommended that the Lagos state government should become more concerned and serious about the education of the physically disabled in Lagos state. It is apparent that with proper policy decisions, the disabled students' condition could improve and their self-concept enhanced. This would result to positive adjustment and consequently fully functioning individuals that are ready to contribute positively to nation building. / Thesis (Ph.D.) - University of Durban-Westville, 2003.

Our aim in this research is to identify new social configurations that emerged from the digital media, specifically the Orkut. We try to understand how the physically disabled people use this instrument to get to socialize and belong to a group. For this purpose, we mapped the communities of physically disabled people in the Orkut and identified their uses, beyond interviewing members of these communities. We noticed that, in the communities that are specifically for disabled people, they expose their disabilities as a symbol of belonging, in a different way of the mixed interactions. The people who get to know each other in those communities dont socialize only in that specific space, but they maintain contact in other virtual and physical spaces. We also noticed that the main interest of the members of those communities is to get to know other people, so they can have relationships, using that virtual space as a connector, where they can explore the others profile and expose themselves. This way of using the community is an alternative to the gap that exists in the cities, that dont offer many opportunities of meeting. Meanwhile, the virtual world offers this possibility with easy access.

Inkluderad?

Macbagan, Camilla, Pollacco, Hannah January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of the survey was to see what methods teachers use to include the physically disabled students in leisure education and the used methods meet the goals and requirements under the UNCRC, the Salamanca Statement and national law formulate. The study had two main questions: How do teachers describe their methods of including the physically disabled students at leisure centers? Does the leisure education meet the requirements of the UNCRC, the Salamanca Statement and national law? Followed by two sub-questions: What is the economic conditions of the leisure centers? In what extent are the leisure centers accessible for the physical disabled students? To answer the purpose and issues qualitative group interviews with 2-3 teachers at three separate leisure centers in a minor, and major municipality in Skåne was conducted. The survey shows that there is a commitment and an ongoing effort to include students with physical disabilities in activities. The survey also shows that there is a risk that these students are stigmatized and restricted in personal development. In order to achieve the goals contained in the declarations and national legislation governing the integration and inclusion of physically disabled students, the survey shows that more extensive changes are required in the way the school organization meets these students' needs at the leisure centers.

Key factors impacting on the development of physically disabled athletes in Limpopo province

Sellschop, Ingrid 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScMedSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medical Science. (rehabilitation) at the University of Stellenbosch / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For physically disabled learners to achieve successful participation in sport requires the synergistic interaction of many diverse factors. The Limpopo province of South Africa produces fewer physically disabled athletes at the junior, senior and elite levels than any other province in South Africa. This study identifies and examines the key aspects that affected the development of physically disabled athletes in the Limpopo province in 2006/2007. Factors that both facilitate or inhibit the development of physically disabled athletes in the province are identified and discussed. This highlights aspects that need to be addressed in seeking to bridge the gap between current deficiencies and an optimised future for participants in disabled sport in Limpopo province. The study is descriptive, using a case-study design as part of a situational analysis. Physically disabled athletes from one school were selected using a convenience sample and key informants were selected through purposive sampling. Questionnaires were completed by ten physically disabled athletes as well as by staff involved in their athletic development. Interviews were also conducted among key informants from the sport and education sectors. The questionnaires were analysed quantitatively and the interviews underwent qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated that there are seven critical areas/key factors influencing the development of physically disabled athletes in Limpopo province. These are: 1. Support systems; 2. Sports participation; 3. Attitudinal facilitators and barriers; 4. Environmental accessibility; 5. Resources; 6. Education and training; 7. Politics. The above elements impacting on the development of physically disabled athletes in Limpopo province are compared with the five key areas of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Development Model. It was found that numerous challenges exist in Limpopo, namely: a lack of sufficient humanresource capacity, funding, sponsorships and the necessary financial resources for adequate infrastructure sustainability and support services. Therefore, in order for physically disabled athletes in Limpopo province to be successfully developed within the framework of the IPC Development Model, the challenges and key factors/critical areas identified by this study need to be addressed. The following recommendations were made following the outcomes of the study: 1. Establish a discussion forum for all stakeholders; 2. Take steps to elevate the status of sport for physically disabled athletes in Limpopo province; 3. Improve the co-operation between sports federations, government departments and disabled people’s organisations Limpopo province; 4. Educate stakeholders; 5. Improve coaching expertise and knowledge; 6. Have specialist rehabilitation expertise in the LSEN schools; 7. Monitor and evaluate sports programmes. Vraelyste is deur tien fisiek-gestremde atlete, sowel as personeellede betrokke by hulle atletiese ontwikkeling, voltooi.
