Stabilisation of arsenic in contaminated soil using iron distributed by electricity

In Boden, northern part of Sweden, there is a site called Solgårdarna which has been used for wood impregnation. The activities on the site have led to soil contamination with chrome (Cr), copper (Cu) and arsenic (As), where the arsenic contamination is the most problematic. This master’s thesis has studied the possibility to stabilise As in-situ with iron (Fe). The aim of the thesis was to investigate how well the distribution of Fe in the soil with the help of electrokinetics occurs. The work was divided into 3 parts, where part 1 and part 2 were performed in the laboratory and part 3 was performed in field. Part 1 investigated how Fe can distribute depending on how the electrodes were connected. This was done using quartz sand so visual assessment of the distribution could be done. Part 2 used the results from part 1 for a similar experiment performed on soil from Solgårdarna to see how stabilisation of As in the soil will work. Part 3 was a field test at Solgårdarna where it was tested on a pilot scale. Part 1 of was performed in two sets, 7 days each. It showed that it is possible to spread iron in the sand with the help of this method. The sand experiments achieved a covering area of 27 % respectively 28 % of rust over the entire profile during one week. Measurement with the XRF showed that where the electrode had been located the concentration of Fe increased up to 0.21-0.29 % and the concentration of Fe between the electrodes were 0.04-0.06 %. Part 2 of the experiment was performed in one setup over a 51-day period, after day 35 the experimental setup was changed due to highly fluctuating pH. The results from the experiment with soil showed that the pH is highly affected by how long the electrodes close to the sampling points were anodes or cathodes. During the experiment, a general trend for increasing As concentration in the different locations in the cell were seen. After the experiment the leachable amounts of As decreased down to 0.8-1.7 mg/kg TS compared to the untreated soil, 2.9 mg/kg TS. Part 3 of the experiment represent a 2-month field pilot test period during the autumn. Towards the end of the sampling period there was a general decrease in dissolved As and Fe in the groundwater, during the same time the groundwater level decreased, the redox potential increased and the electrical conductivity decreased. The laboratory experiments with the sand showed a removal rate around 90 % or higher, which is a good result. Those experiments were however performed using a clean inert material which is not comparable with real conditions. The field experiment was done over a short period of time due to time limitations of this thesis, while follow up of the pilot test was done within the scope of a continued research project at LTU. The given results showed a decrease in dissolved arsenic in groundwater which is a positive result. To determine whether the decrease is due to the natural adsorption of As to soil or due to the impact of provided Fe oxides requires longer monitoring of the experiment.

This thesis deals with the design of the equipment and documentation for the design of equipment for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and carbon monoxide (CO) by catalytic oxidation and the selection of appropriate technological conditions for this technology. Introduction is devoted to familiarization with the field of the catalytic oxidation, used catalysts, catalyst supports and their active components. Advantages and disadvantages of the use of catalytic oxidation versus thermal incineration are outlined and currently applicable legislative terms for VOC and CO emissions are listed. In the next part of the thesis the fundamental mathematical tools and research findings available for catalytic reactor model designed primarily for monolithic catalysts are summarized. Presented kinetic model considers continuous reactor with plug flow of gas and adiabatic heating by oxidation reactions corrected for the heat loss of the reactor. The next chapter discusses the design of the new prototype of the catalytic oxidation pilot plant (i.e. the reactor incl. peripherals) primarily intended for monolithic catalysts and bulk catalysts in the form of the fixed bed. The basis for the design and sizing are material and energy balances in the ChemCAD for different intended use of the unit, from which boundary conditions of the unit operating parameters arises. Pilot plant has been designed and built, functionality tests was scheduled also with consecutive obtaining of experimental data not only for the reactor kinetic model. Results of the model for the catalytic combustion were in good agreement with measured data. The next part includes two industrial case studies of the catalytic oxidation process usage for the chemical industry. In particular it was dealt with a replacement of the non-catalytic combustion for the catalytic for VOC abatement from chemical production plants off-gas streams of the company Momentive Specialty Chemicals in Sokolov and German city Leuna. These case studies have brought many valuable experimental and technological knowledge from long-term pilot tests and also verification of design concept, thanks to which it was later possible to design a pilot unit for removal of pollutants in premises of NETME Centre and among other to economically evaluate the usage of catalytic oxidation for the off gas cleaning, in comparison with traditional combustion, in two completely different individual cases. This information was valuable and necessary for the verification of theoretical assumptions of the thesis on specific conditions of two different industrial productions. Based on acquired practical experience and theoretical background, guidelines for designing of devices for VOC and CO removal in the industry were developed.

This thesis describes concept and implementation of application assisting balloon pilots with guiding to a chosen target. Theoretical part is focused on basics of ballooning and navigation. Designed application uses proprietary OziExplorer files, clearly displays all information from external GPS unit connected via COM port and saves travelled path and waypoints. Important feature of the application is getting forecast of wind flow in various altitudes from the internet before the flight and analysis of information from GPS for calculation actual air flow during flight. In the end of this thesis the application is tested in real environment and its functionality is evaluated.

The main goal of this diploma thesis is to find out whether it is possible to measure stress during piloting. If so, it would be possible to develop systems that could help pilots in stressful situations and thus alleviate the stress, this would have great impact and possitively improve work performance. There are few similar studies in the field, the stress factors that affect the pilots and what physiological changes are observable in such situations. Finally, an experimental measurement is performed during three flights, which is aimed to demonstrate the information obtained and thus the possibility of measuring stress and the metod to do so.

Hand function is important for participation in daily occupations. The current focus in assessment and treatment of clients in occupational therapy remains on body structure and function which is also true in South Africa. The gap in the literature about the effects of OBHT indicates that there is a need for a study in a South African context. This research was conducted to examine the influences of an OBHT among clients with hand injuries within occupational therapy practice in a South African context.

AN ANALYSIS OF COLLEGIATE AVIATION PILOTS AND FATIGUE

<p>Flying an airplane is a complex operation. Pilots must be able to manipulate the three-dimensional flight characteristics, maintain situational awareness, aircraft configurations, interpret charts, and handle communications with air traffic control. This requires maximum cognitive and psychomotor skills. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has added reducing fatigue-related accidents is on their top ten most wanted list. According to the NTSB (2019), fatigue “degrades a person’s ability to stay awake, alert, and attentive to the demands of safely controlling a vehicle, vessel, aircraft, or train” (p.18). Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has called on stakeholders, including the academic community, to reduce the number of accidents in the general aviation sector (Federal Aviation Administration, 2018). After a review of extant literature, most fatigue research in aviation pertains to airline and military operations (Keller, Mendonca, & Cutter, 2019; Levin, Mendonca, Keller, & Teo, 2019; Mendonca, Keller, Lu, 2019). However, collegiate aviation students have differences such as class scheduling, maturity, and regulations. Thus, making collegiate aviation pilots a unique population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was threefold: 1) To investigate the causes and symptoms of fatigue among collegiate aviation students. 2) To investigate whether there is a statistically significant association between enrollment status and a participant’s willingness to fly fatigued. 3) To investigate whether a participant’s age and flight hours predict their willingness to fly while fatigued. The researcher used a mixed-methods online-based survey to answer the research questions. The researcher used convenience and judgment sampling to distribute the survey to eight collegiate aviation programs in the United States. A total of 248 (n = 248) participants participated in the survey. The results of the survey indicated that participants cited excessive workload, stress, and sleep-related issues (disturbances and poor quantity) as the most common causes of fatigue. Participants cited drowsiness, loss of concentration, and physical/mental discomfort, including irritation, as symptoms of fatigue. The results also indicated that there was a statistically significant association between enrollment status and a participant’s willingness to fly while fatigued; students from higher enrollment statuses are more willing to fly fatigued. Lastly, the results indicated that age might be used as a predictor for a participant’s willingness to fly while fatigued. Conversely, flight hours cannot be used as a predictor for a participant’s willingness to fly while fatigued.</p>

This thesis deals with the career and private life of a specific group of employees of Czechoslovak airlines - cockpit crew, especially pilots - during the years 1970-1989 with a slight overlap into the 60's and 70's as the context of the work requires. This thesis is based on the method of oral history. Recordings with all the narrators were combined into integrated blocks of data, that shows how these people became pilots of Czechoslovak airlines but also how they managed to deal with everyday contact with the wide abroad, how their career progressed, how they were affected by changes in the history of Czechoslovakia and Czechoslovak airlines during the era of "Normalization". The author of this thesis tried to provide an insight into the history of pilot profession in the mentioned period based on creating a brief history of Czechoslovak airlines, archive materials concerning the trends in aviation and testimonies and interpretations of the narrators.
