Esta dissertação tem por objetivo analisar aspectos da trajetória de Virgílio Maurício (1892-1937), sobretudo, no que diz respeito à sua atuação artística. Intelectual polígrafo, Maurício teve diversas ocupações, atuando no campo da pintura, da crítica de arte e da medicina. Na passagem do século XIX para o XX, Maurício iniciou seus estudos em arte, sendo premiado pouco tempo depois no Salon da Société des Artistes Français, de 1913, com uma pintura de nu feminino. Intensamente referenciado na imprensa de seu tempo, seu nome não subsistiu à resistência dos pares. Sobre Maurício eram imputadas severas acusações, sobretudo, a de não ser o autor de suas obras. A sua atuação abriu claramente o debate sobre a moralidade artística e a questão da disputa por posições no cenário artístico nacional. Sua produção ainda forneceu elementos para se pensar os modelos de representação do corpo feminino, assim como as recomendações direcionadas ao corpo da mulher, instituídas pela medicina eugenista no século XX. / This dissertation aims to analyze aspects of Virgílio Maurício\'s trajectory (1892-1937), especially with regard to his artistic performance. Intellectual polygraph, Maurício had various occupations, working in the field of painting, art criticism and medicine. In the late nineteenth century to the twentieth, Maurício began his studies in art, being awarded a short time later at the Salon Salon da Société des Artistes Français, in 1913, with a female nude painting. Heavily referenced in the press of this time, his name does not outlived due to the resistance of his pairs. About Maurício severe accusations were attributed primarily to not being the author of his works. His performance clearly opened the debate about artistic morality and the question of competition for positions in the national art scene. His production also provided elements to think about the female body representation models, as well as recommendations directed to the woman\'s body, established by eugenic medicine in the twentieth century.

The research most recent in this field of study demonstrates that the educators come proceeding the necessary revisions in the treatment from the theoretical questions and method. What also it verifies with the magnifying of the cognitivos procedures, of the search of new objects and new problems, is that the historians of the education are extending its documentary sources, abandoning the accurate affirmations on the past and the future and adopting each time more the retrospect reflections, the autocritic, the reevaluation of the sources, problemize the process of reconstruction of the memories to understand the past in its complexity, density and ambiguity. The elaboration of a new biography of Pedro Américo de Figueiredo e Melo (1843-1905) follows this reasoning and makes to emerge, through exegesis of the literary, philosophical texts and scientific produced by him between1864 and 1905, its participation in the debate enter on the construction of pedagogical boardings for the education of the art, of its defense for the dissemination of the knowledge and the access of the Brazilian population to the national and international artistic production by means of the public and gratuitous school. For being, at the same time, tributary and creditor of the spirit of the time, the literary production of Pedro Américo express conceptual unit, theoretical, aesthetic and ethical that assumes singular importance in our intellectual and educational scene. In this manner, this new biography aims at to contribute for the preservation of the memory of the Brazilian educational history in the second half of XIX century. / Nos últimos vinte anos, a produção historiográfica voltada propriamente para a Histó-ria da Educação Brasileira tem aumentado de forma significativa. As pesquisas mais recentes nesse campo de estudo demonstram que os educadores vêm procedendo a revisões necessárias no trato das questões teóricas e de método. O que também se verifica com a ampliação dos procedimentos cognitivos, da busca de novos objetos e de novos problemas, é que os historia-dores da educação estão ampliando suas fontes documentais, abandonando as afirmações exa-tas sobre o passado e o futuro e adotando cada vez mais a reflexão retrospectiva, a autocrítica, a reavaliação das fontes, problematizando o processo de reconstrução das memórias para compreender o passado na sua complexidade, densidade e ambigüidade. A elaboração de uma nova biografia de Pedro Américo de Figueiredo e Melo (1843-1905) segue este raciocínio e faz emergir, através da exegese dos textos literários, filosóficos e científicos produzidos por ele entre 1864 e 1905, sua participação no debate sobre a cons-trução de abordagens pedagógicas para o ensino da arte, da sua defesa pela disseminação do conhecimento e do acesso da população brasileira à produção artística nacional e internacio-nal por meio da escola pública e gratuita. Por ser, ao mesmo tempo, tributária e credora do espírito da época, a produção literária de Pedro Américo expressa uma unidade conceitual, teórica, estética e ética que assume im-portância singular no nosso cenário intelectual e educacional. Desse modo, essa nova biogra-fia visa contribuir para a preservação da memória da história educacional brasileira na segun-da metade do século XIX.
