The capybara Hydrochaeris Hydrochaeris is a rodent large and semiaquático. The species occurs in various environments and can occur in regions with high anthropogenic influences. The BR- 471 that cuts along the ESEC Taim, impacts locally in the region, to be causing damage to fauna and flora, according to the roadkill capybaras along the reservation. This region has also been used herbicides and pesticides that may be contributing to the presence of metals. These metals can be deposited in the sediment and the water column affecting directly or indirectly the bodies. However capybaras are subject to the effects of bioaccumulation of these possible contaminants, acquired through eating plants contaminated by metals. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the levels of heavy metal contamination in tissue capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) killed by being run over in the BR-471 South Rio Grande do Sul. To determine the concentrations of metals (Ag, Cd, Cu , Pb, and Zn) in different tissues (liver, kidney, fat, muscle) and the stomach contents of capybara, monthly samples were taken over a year. Samples of the dead animals will be made through autopsy, samples and will be placed in plastic tubes and subsequently frozen. After these samples are weighed, dried and digested in nitric acid and diluted in MilliQ water. The Ag concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn are determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The data are expressed as mean ± standard error. The means of the metals of male and female tissues will be compared by analysis of two-way variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey test later, with 5% significance. The results showed that the silver concentration was lower in the spring relative to the other seasons in samples (P <0.05), there was no significant difference (P <0.05) in cadmium concentration in the samples, the concentration lead spring was higher in all samples (P <0.05), the concentration of copper in the winter and autumn was significantly lower than the spring and summer (p <0.05), the concentration of zinc was not variation throughout the year (P <0.05). Cd, Ag and Pb have not changed throughout the year in the sediment (P <0.05), whereas the Cu was present in the sediment in the spring, and Zn was higher in autumn and winter. (P <0.05). These results demonstrated that capybaras are contaminated by non-essential metals in the Taim Ecological Station. In addition, we suggest the use of at for contamination monitoring of the capybara for metals.

Nemetalinių intarpų nustatymas nusodinant cinką ir jo lydinius impulsine elektros srove / Determination of the amount of non metallic inclusions in pulse plated zinc and zinc alloy coatings

Antul, Galina 24 September 2008 (has links)
Electrodeposition process of Zn in alkaline solutions occurs through oxide/hydroxide phase formation, which under certain conditions could not be totally reduced and therefore formation of non metallic (oxide/hydroxide) inclusions can take place. Pulse plating of metal coatings is widely used as the method for metal structure modification in order to enhance the corrosion resistance of Zn and Zn alloy coatings, however the amount of inclusions in pulse plated Zn and Zn-Ni coatings was not investigated up to date. The amount of non-metallic inclusions was determined from anodic dissolution curves, obtained in Na2SO4 + Na2 EDTA solution and from X-ray photoelectron analysis of the sample surfaces after Ar ion sputtering. The amount of the oxide phase in Zn and Zn-Ni coatings was determined to be higher in the pulse plated coatings with respect to direct current ones, while in Zn coatings this amount was also higher with respect to the alloy. The amount of ZnO in the inclusions of direct current plated Zn coatings is higher than that of Zn(OH)2, however, application of pulse deposition increases the amount of the latter compound. Oxide and hydroxide amounts in the direct current plated Zn-Ni coatings are similar, meanwhile, the pulse plating increases significantly the amount of hydroxide phase.

Patch loading resistance of welded I-beams : with respect to misaligned web stiffeners

Boutzas, John-Alexander, Zeka, Dafina January 2016 (has links)
When a concentrated load is introduced perpendicular to the flanges of a steel beam, this condition is referred to as Patch loading (Gozzi, 2007). This occurrence is common in many steel structures, for example at supports or during launching of bridges. Because of the usual slenderness of I-beams and other plated structures, these are sometimes reinforced with stiffeners in order to avoid buckling. Modifications, such as adding stiffeners to a beam, are done to make greater plastic deformations possible before buckling can occur; thereby increasing the resistance against failure. Transverse stiffeners are added in areas where the beam is exposed to concentrated loads (Lagerqvist, 1994). The descriptions of calculating patch loading in the Eurocode are presented for cases of double stiffeners, with the load applied in between two stiffeners with same distance to each of them, or when there is one single stiffener that is acting in line with the load. In the Eurocode there are also descriptions on how to calculate on the resistance against patch loading when there are no stiffeners added. However, the Eurocode lacks descriptions for cases when the stiffeners are misaligned. The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the impact from transverse stiffeners to the resistance of welded I-beams, when the stiffeners are misaligned and where the length of the beam varies. Because of the complexity of such of problems it is almost impossible to find theoretical solutions (Lagerqvist & Johansson, 1996). Therefore, in this study as well as in almost all studies that aim to predict the ultimate resistances of steel beams subjected to patch loading, the results are gained empirically. The tests herein were done by FE-modeling and the results from the physical experiments done in Lagerkvist’s doctoral thesis were used for validation of the model, as conducting experiments ourselves was not economically possible. 6 The study was made in two steps. In the first step FE-models were produced under the same circumstances as the results obtained by Lagerqvist (1994). Those analyses were not part of the aim of the study; the intention for making the initial analyses was to strengthen the reliability of the results. From there, the final analyses were made with the aim in investigating the influence of stiffeners on the resistance, when these are misaligned. In this step, observations were also made with regards to the impact of the bending moment of the beam on its resistance. The initial analyses, which were made for validation of the modeling, had a satisfying correspondence to the physical experiments; hence the final analyses are assumed valid of acceptance. From observations of the results in the final analyses it is noticed that adding stiffeners is a highly preferred way of increasing the resistance for slender beams. For full utilization it is however important to have the stiffeners optimally placed, because a small deviation from this position gives an unwanted decrease in resistance.

Lamella sedimentation: alternative for treatment of overflow sewage - study in ETE Martim de Sá (Caraguatatuba/SP).

Gomes, Fernanda Cavalcante 12 April 2010 (has links)
This study was motivated by the need to treat high wastewater influent exceeding in sewage treatment plants, which occurs on days of heavy rain. The central hypothesis of this study is that the physical-chemical process to treat dilute sewage overflow, it can be advantageous with respect to increased capacity and expansion of biological systems. The research was conducted in ETE Martim de Sá (SABESP), located in Caraguatatuba / SP, where the sewage is treated by sequencing batch reactor. It was studied the variation of the flow of wastewater during the rainy season, and the operation of the batch. Furthermore, it was evaluated the use of coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation in plate settler with application of aluminium sulfate, ferric chloride and cationic polymer in a pilot plant, after the testing of bench scale apparatus in Jar Test. Monitoring the inflow showed that on days of rainfall and bypass, the maximum flow was 220 L/s, up to 6 times the dry weather average flow. For this situation, the physico-chemical process may become a promising alternative, due to its ability to work under high flow rates in smaller facilities. In tests to evaluate the physical-chemical treatment was used two kinds of raw sewage: 50 and 100 mg/L BOD, overflow rate used in the plated settling tank was 76.82 m³/m² / day. The best dosage of chemical used to treat the raw sewage BOD of 50 mg/L was 40 mg/L ferric chloride plus 0.5 mg/L of cationic polymer, resulting in average effluent with BOD of 26 mg/L. For the raw sewage of the range BOD of 100 mg/L, 60 mg/L ferric chloride was the best dosage with an average BOD of effluent equal to 44 mg/L. For this range of work is recommended to provide for the application of polymer. This research concluded that it is possible to comply with the legal standard of treated sewage with physical-chemical treatment, also produced evidence that can help in the economic evaluation for the implementation of this technology in parallel with the activated sludge system in hydraulic overload situations. However, analysis of the flow diagram of operation of the station with the sequencing batch reactor, indicated that it is possible to make the treatment of flow of 220 L/s by the biological process. Therefore, is recommend the implementation of physical-chemical treatment only if after the test-scale operation of the batches with the flow rate of 220 L/s, the biological treatment doesn\'t meet the established standards.

Development and investigation of weft knitted strain sensor

Atalay, Ozgur January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a study of the sensing properties exhibited by textile-based knitted strain sensors. Sensing fabrics were manufactured from silver-plated conductive nylon and non-conducting elastomeric yarns. The component yarns offered similar diameters, bending characteristics and surface friction, but their production parameters differed in respect of the yarn input tension, the number of conductive courses in the sensing structure and the elastomeric yarn extension characteristics. The knitted sensors were manufactured using flat-bed knitting technology, and electro-mechanical tests were performed on the specimens using a tensile testing machine to apply strain whilst the sensor was incorporated into a Wheatstone bridge arrangement to allow electrical monitoring. The novel operational principle relies on the separation under strain of adjacent conducting knitted loops which are normally held in contact by the elastomeric yarn. The results confirm that production parameters play a fundamental role in determining the physical behaviour and the sensing properties of knitted sensors and the response could be engineered by varying the production parameters of specific designs. Results showed that the knitted structures could be manipulated to produce gauge factor values between 2.26 and 0.23 for sensors with working ranges of 8.4 % and 3.3 % respectively when the elastomeric yarn had 8 cN input tension. The generated signals were stable and repeatable, and under cyclic testing proved to be substantially free from long-term drift. A textile-based strain sensor was developed to create a respiration belt; this was realised by bringing together the extensible knitted sensor and a relatively inelastic textile strap. Machine simulations and real time measurements on a human subject were performed to calculate average breathing frequencies under different static and dynamic conditions. Various respiration rates were monitored to simulate different medical conditions and with the belt located either round the torso or in the abdominal area, the sensor yielded a satisfactory response. However, body motion artefacts affected the signal quality under dynamic conditions and an additional signal-processing step was added to separate unwanted interference from the breathing signal. Electro-mechanical modelling was developed by exploiting Peirce`s loop model in order to describe the fabric geometry under static and dynamic conditions. Kirchhoff`s node and loop equations were employed to create a generalised solution for the equivalent electrical resistance of the textile sensor for a given knitted loop geometry and for a specified number of loops. Experimental results were obtained from the sensor for strain levels up to 40% and these correlate well with the modelled data; a maximum error of 2.13 % was found between the experimental and modelled resistance-strain relationships.

Ionic Conductivity in Non-Ionic Compounds

Avala, Usha Kranthi 01 August 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this work is to investigate the ionic conductivity of the drugs under certain conditions and also to compare the ionic conductivities of drugs determined by single surface sensors and parallel plate sensors. The ionic conductivity of various materials at their pre-melt and melt states are studied in order to further study a recently discovered phenomenon. Polar solids like Lidocaine, Ketoconazole, Procainamide and Nifedipine were examined in this study. Experimental studies show an increase in ionic conductivity in both pre-melt (20 -30 °C below melting temperature) and melt transition regions. Results of ionic conductivity of both parallel plate and single surface sensor at different frequencies are compared. At 1000 Hz, all the samples show an increase in ionic conductivity with both parallel plate and single surface sensor, but at 0.1 Hz frequency, no increase in ionic conductivity is observed with parallel plate sensor except for Nifedipine.
