Since considering playing as a revealing and significant time-space human activity, it was chosen as the strategy to observe its characteristics in this population. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the playful features (action, playful attitude and interest) of children in preschool age, with very low birth weight correlating them with their socio-economic level and perception of their parents. Methodology: This survey was based on type-series of cases, carried out with 36 children who are followed up in the Ambulatório de Seguimento do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Maranhão. Two different protocols were applied: an initial parental interview and the Brazilian version of Playful Behavioral Assessment (adapted by Sant'Anna, 2006). Results: The playful attitude is influenced by the extremely low birthweight and the atypical development. It was observed that the pleasure and curiosity are the most frequent features in recreation, though the sense of humor and interest for challenges were less present attitudes. Conclusion: The mother of these children referred a playful behavior and domestic environment seems to be favorable to the playful characteristics and practices hence the children have assured daily physical and affective space to their recreation. / Introdução: A sobrevivência de crianças nascidas com muito baixo peso (<1.500g), exige melhor conhecimento dos aspectos determinantes do seu desenvolvimento global, na medida em que, ao longo das suas vidas apresentam desvantagens em várias esferas. Por considerarmos o brincar como uma atividade humana reveladora e significativa de um tempoespaço social, o elegemos como estratégia para observamos suas características nesta população. Objetivo: Avaliar as características lúdicas (ação, interesse e atitude lúdicas) de crianças em idade pré-escolar, nascidas de muito baixo peso correlacionando-as com nível sócio-econômico e percepção dos genitores. Metodologia: pesquisa do tipo série de casos, com amostra constituída por 36 crianças que são acompanhadas no Ambulatório de Seguimento do Hospital Universitário da Universidade Federal do Maranhão. Utilizamos dois protocolos: Entrevista Inicial com os Pais e Avaliação do Comportamento Lúdico (versões brasileiras, adaptadas por Sant Anna, 2006). Resultados: verificamos que extremo baixo peso e desenvolvimento atípico influencia a atitude lúdica; observamos que o prazer e a curiosidade são as características mais freqüentes nas brincadeiras, e que o senso de humor e o gosto pelo desafio foram as atitudes menos presentes. Conclusão: O ambiente doméstico parece favorecer as características e as práticas lúdicas visto que há espaço físico e afetivo garantido cotidianamente para as brincadeiras, inclusive as mães de crianças com desenvolvimento atípico referem presença de comportamento lúdico em seus filhos.
