Development of a double-sided ladder for tracking in high-energy physics / Développement d'une échelle double face pour la trajectométrie en physique des hautes énergies

Boitrelle, Benjamin 13 February 2017 (has links)
The PLUME project develops ultra-light pixelated layers with specifications driven by the design of a vertex detector at the future e+e- International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC will give access to final states like Hνν, as this work demonstrates for centre-of-mass energy 350GeV and a luminosity of 250 fb-1. PLUME devices exploit the concept of double-sided ladder spaved with thinned CMOS pixel sensors in order to reach a material budget of 0.35 % of radiation length. The present study validated that simultaneous operation of the 12 CMOS sensors integrated on such light ladders do not impact their electrical behaviour. Surface deformations were observed but a specific algorithm during the off- line analysis was proposed and successfully tested to preserve the native sensor spatial resolution. Finally, a measurement of the material budget of a less advanced ladder prototype has been performedat DESY test beam and yield 0.47±0.02 % of radiation length, matching the expected value.

"Ampliação da tomografia sísmica do manto superior no sudeste e centro-oeste do Brasil com ondas P" / Extension of Upper Mantle Seismic Tomography in Southeast and Central Brazil using P-waves

Marcelo Peres Rocha 20 August 2003 (has links)
Variations of P and PKP travel times were used for seismic tomography of the upper mantle beneath southeast and central Brazil. Our principal objectives were: To improve the resolution obtained by the previous studies (carried out by VanDecar et al., 1995; Escalante, 2002; Schimmel et al., 2003 between 1992 and 2001) with inclusion of new data and stations, to map areas not covered by previous stations, to show the consistency of the database, mainly of the related to the new stations and to verify the robustness of the detected anomalies. The influence of the stations located in the anomalous areas was studied through secondary inversions (removing stations). The new data set includes recent records of 2002 and also new records from 2000 and 2001 for events used in the previous works. Our results confirm the structures observed in the previous works and also revealed new anomalous regions, particularly in the south of the Mato Grosso state. We confirmed the anomalies observed in the previous works: The São Francisco cráton has as a high-velocity anomaly, with roots down to 250 km depth, the low velocity anomaly interpreted as a fossil remnant of the Tristão da Cunha plume (VanDecar et al. 1995), the good correlation of the shallow low velocity anomalies with the alkaline intrusions of the Late-Cretaceous (Schimmel et al. 2003), the low velocity anomaly inferred by Escalante (2002) in the Iporá igneous province in Goiás (possible area of the initial impact of the plume of Trindade), a high-velocity anomaly under the Paraná Basin (shallow depths) interpreted initially by Schimmel et al. (2003) as possible cratonic nucleus of the Paraná Basin and also, in this same area (larger depths), a high-velocity anomaly interpreted as the slab of the Nazca Plate (Schimmel et al., 2003 and Escalante, 2002). The new data set allowed the expansion of the study area and the imaging of low velocity anomalies in the igneous province of Poxoréu in Mato Grosso, which are consistent with the model of litospheric thinning proposed by Thompson et al. (1998).

Modelling of buoyant flows associated with large area fires and indirect free convection

Tsitsopoulos, Vasileios January 2013 (has links)
Experimental observations indicate the presence of attached, gravity induced, horizontal buoyant currents above large area fires. Their driving mechanism is indirect and resembles the one observed above heated horizontal plates. Classic plume modelling is satisfactory for providing information for the flow far from the source. In dealing with large areas and directing attention to the flow close to the source, the classic plume theory should fail because the radial pressure gradient that is responsible for the driving of the flow is squeezed in the long and thin classic plume assumption. For this we propose a new plume structure for the description of the buoyant flow above a circular region of large radius L as “The flow field must be divided into three regions. A region where the flow is predominantly horizontal and attached to the surface, a transition region from horizontal to vertical where separation of the attached current takes place, and a region where vertical flow is established and classic plume theory can be applied”. A model for the description of the gross properties of the horizontal currents is developed under the term “horizontal plume”. The modified Richardson number for the horizontal plume a, being analogous to the radius of the large area, is studied asymptotically in the limit a → ∞ and second order uniformly valid semi-analytical solutions are obtained. The hot plate experiment was set up in order to test the model and facilitate its improvement. A chapter is dedicated to the data analysis coming from thermocouple readings and visualisation of the flow using particle image velocimetry. In the remainder of this thesis two classic problems of laminar natural convection are revisited. That of the first order laminar boundary layer above an isothermal circular plate of radius a and the first order laminar boundary layer above the semi- infinite plate inclined to horizontal. In both cases allowances to variable property effects were made through the introduction of a nondimensional parameter λT, with its value set to zero implying the assumption of the Boussinesq approximation. For the circular plate, fourth order series solutions were obtained valid at the edge of the plate where the effects of λT and Prandtl number Pr are studied. Furthermore a finite difference scheme for the numerical solution of the nonsimilar partial integro- differential equation was developed using the Keller Box method and compared with results obtained from the commercial finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5a. For the semi-infinite plate, fourth order series approximations valid at the edge of the plate were obtained, while an extensive analysis for the effect of λT, Pr and inclination parameter σ was performed on the flow. Positions of the separation points when the inclination is negative (σ < 0) as a function of Pr and λT were recovered.

Les pseudonymes dans les littératures yiddish et hébraïque du millieu du XIXe siècle au milieu du XXe siècle / Pseudonyms in Yiddish and Hebrew Literatures, from the Mid-19th Century to the Middle of the 20th Century

Bar-Kochva, Sharon 06 February 2015 (has links)
Modern Yiddish and Hebrew literatures are closely connected by a common long history, sharing many stylistic and thematic features. However, both literatures significantly differ in their use of pseudonyms. In Yiddish literature, authors’ pseudonyms appear rather frequently, and a significant number of the most important writers are known mainly in their pseudonyms, while in modern Hebrew literature pen names remained a relatively marginal occurrence. This research analyses pseudonymity in both literatures in order to explain this discrepancy. In the first chapter, the various patterns used in building pseudonyms are analysed, so to establish a general typology of the phenomenon. Subsequently, I focus on the "lasting" pseudonyms, namely those that accompany authors for a long time, shaping and determining their public image. In the second chapter I describe in detail under which circumstances and in what ways the "lasting" pseudonyms were created and used. Finally, in the last part the information analysed previously is utilised, clarifying that pseudonymity is actually a social phenomenon, and defining the social and historical factors that led to the adoption of pseudonymity as one of the "invented traditions" of modern Yiddish literature.

Emission inventories from Kuwait petroleum refineries and respective ground level concentration of pollutants in the neighboring residential area

Alanezi, Salwa January 2013 (has links)
The State of Kuwait has three large refineries, namely, Mina Al Ahmadi Refinery, Mina Abdullah Refinery and Shuaiba Refinery. These refineries process and refine Kuwait Crude Oil through different process units. There are many heaters, boilers and flares that form a part of the complicated equipment which enhance the different petroleum processes. Fuel gas is used as a firing fuel for those heaters and boilers. As a result, stack emissions like SO2, NOx, CO are predominantly present in the flue gases and this study focuses on those emissions and their impact on the surrounding residential area. The area of interest will be Umm Al-Hyman residential area. This study accumulates emission inventories from the three refineries and the respective ground level concentration of the pollutants in the neighboring residential area. It also focuses on the impact of emissions from the refinery operations on the ground level concentrations in the surrounding areas by using the inventory model and latest emission factors to provide accurate emission estimates. The models were developed and the results were verified with the actual data from the area of impact. As a result of the findings of the major pollutants, namely SO2, NOx & CO, it is found that SO2 and CO are not exceeding Kuwait EPA Ambient Air Quality Standards for Residential Areas normally. However, NOx is observed to exceed occasionally. Even though, NOx emissions from refineries sources represented by plume models were much less, there is a consistent increase in the measured NOx. Furthermore, in 2007, the measured hourly, daily and annual NOx concentration exceeded the international standard many times. The increasing trend in NOx is attributed to continuous increase in population and the number of motor vehicles. The study will go further step in recommending engineering solutions and best practices to reduce the pollutants concentrations which will help in the reduction of human health risks and protect the environment.

Magmatic response to the evolving New Zealand Margin of Gondwana during the Mid-Late Cretaceous

Tappenden, Vanessa Elizabeth January 2003 (has links)
The Mount Somers Volcanic Group (MSVG) and Mandamus Igneous Complex (MIC) are the magmatic manifestations of the transition from convergence to extension at the Gondwana margin, which culminated in the separation of New Zealand from Australia and Antarctica. The MIC has been correlated both geochemically and temporally with the Central Marlborough Igneous Province (CMIP). The MSVG and CMIP are located in the Eastern Province of New Zealand. The MSVG is restricted to the Rakaia terrane, whereas the CMIP is restricted to the Pahau terrane. The Rakaia and Pahau terranes are thick accretionary complexes, which were strongly deformed as a result of prolonged subduction at the Gondwana margin. The Pahau terrane is the younger of the two and continued to be deposited and deformed until the abrupt cessation of subduction, which in the Marlborough sedimentary record occurred in the Motuan (100 - 105 Ma). Following the cessation of subduction, after an interval of 2-7 Ma of relative quiescence and subsidence of the Pahau terrane, the MSVG and MIC were erupted/emplaced. The production of MSVG and MIC magmas occurred simultaneously and the activity was of short-lived duration. SHRIMP geochronology yielded crystallisation ages of 97.0 ± 1.5 Ma to 98.0 ± 1.2 Ma from zircons separated from MSVG rhyolites. The SHRIMP ages are within error of the previously published Rb-Sr age for the MIC. The SHRIMP geochronology also confirmed the presence of inherited zircons which yielded ages consistent with their derivation from the Rakaia terrane. Ar-Ar geochronology confirmed the coeval nature of the MSVG and MIC magmatism, but yielded consistently younger ages (94.5 ± 3 Ma for the MSVG and 94.2 ± 1.7 Ma for the MIC). The systematic differences in ages obtained by SHRIMP and Ar-Ar are believed to be method-dependent. The MSVG comprises a calc-alkaline volcanic assemblage, which ranges in composition from basaltic-andesite lavas (SiO₂ = 54.5%) to high-silica rhyolites and ignimbrites (SiO₂ ≤ 78.1%). The MSVG had an original extent of at least 18 000 km². The magmas from the MSVG had high LILE/HFSE, high LILE/REE and moderately high LREE/HFSE which are characteristic of subduction derived magmas. Geochemical modelling suggests that the MSVG magmas were formed from partial melting of a subduction-modified mantle wedge, with high degrees of crustal assimilation. The assimilant had an isotopic composition similar to that of the Rakaia terrane, which is consistent with the geological setting of the MSVG. The MSVG has ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sri from 0.7055 to 0.7100 and ¹⁴³Nd/¹⁴⁴Ndi from 0.51254 to 0.51230 (ɛNd +0.5 to -4.2), which reflects varying degrees of contamination by Rakaia terrane. Radiogenic isotope modelling suggests that the MSVG end-members were derived from the same parent magma, which evolved through AFC processes from basaltic-andesite to rhyolite. The modelling strongly suggests that assimilation played a lesser role in the petrogenesis of the Malvern Hills magmas than in the petrogenesis of the other units. AFC modelling requires the degree of assimilation to increase as the magmas evolved. Oxygen isotope data are consistent with high degrees of crustal assimilation, and may indicate that the assimilant had higher ¹⁸O characteristics than the Rakaia terrane samples analysed. The MIC is an alkaline suite which ranges in composition from basalt and gabbro to syenite, trachyte and phono-tephrite. The MIC is interpreted to have formed from enriched asthenospheric mantle, with a composition similar to HIMU (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pbi ranges from 19.2 to 20.3). The samples range in isotopic composition from ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sri = 0.7030 to 0.7036, ¹⁴³Nd/¹⁴⁴Ndi = 0.51275 to 0.51268 (ɛNd +4.6 to +3.3). The range in isotopic composition is due to varying degrees of contamination by Pahau terrane, which reaches a maximum of 25% but in most samples is < 10%. The MIC is contaminated to a much lesser extent than the MSVG which is interpreted to be related to the thinner nature of the Pahau crust in the mid-Cretaceous. The latest phases of activity in the MIC were subjected to lower degrees of contamination which is interpreted to reflect the passage of magmas through pre-existing pathways. The onset of MSVG and CMIP magmatism coincided with the initiation of major rift-related depositional basins, and the eruption of the MSVG is demonstrably associated with normal faulting. The tectonic trigger responsible for the sudden onset of magmatism and rifting in the Eastern Province terranes was the detachment of the previously subducting slab following the cessation of subduction due to the arrival of the Hikurangi Plateau at the margin and the subsequent stalling of the Pacific spreading centre. The capture of the Gondwana margin led to the propogation of extension into the margin by the divergent Pacific plate. The ensuing extension aided the detachment of the subducting slab beneath the Eastern Province terranes. The slab-detachment promoted decompression melting of the sub-lithospheric mantle wedge to produce the MSVG magmas and triggered the ascent of asthenospheric mantle through the slab window, which melted through decompression to produce the CMIP magmatism. The asthenospheric mantle tapped by the slab detachment episode was highly enriched relative to N-MORB and is akin to the similar age HIMU-OIB affinity melts documented from Antarctica and Australia. The short-lived duration of activity is typical of slab-detachment related magmatism which occurs as a passive response to plate reconfiguration. The similarity in geochemistry of the MIC with OIB-affinity igneous centres in Australia and Antarctica implies an enriched mantle domain of large geographical extent. The distribution of relatively small volumes of OIB magmatism is suggestive of a fossil plume component, which was tapped in response to lithospheric extension producing relatively short-lived HIMU magmatism. The same fossil plume component has previously been implicated in the formation of the Cenozoic West Antarctic Rift System and may be responsible for the late Cretaceous magmatism in the Chatham Islands and Tertiary volcanics of the South Island of New Zealand.

How do mantle plumes help to thin and break up the lithosphere?

Agrusta, Roberto 12 December 2012 (has links)
Mantle plumes are traditionally proposed to play an important role in thinning the lithosphere. Seismic images beneath Hawaii and Cape Verde, for instance, show a lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) up to 50 km shallower than the surroundings. However, previous numerical modeling of plume-lithosphere interaction implies that unless the plate is stationary the thermo-mechanical erosion of the lithosphere does not exceed 30 km. We used 2D petrological-thermo-mechanical numerical models based on a finite-difference method on a staggered grid and marker in cell method to further study the plume-lithosphere interaction. We focused on: (1) analyzing the dynamics of the small-scale convection (SSC) in the plume wake as a function of the plume vigor and plate velocity and (2) quantifying the effect of partial melting on this SSC. A homogeneous peridotite composition with a Newtonian temperature- and pressure-dependent viscosity is used to simulate both the plate and the convective mantle. A constant velocity, ranging from 5 to 12.5 cm/yr, is imposed at the top of the plate. Plumes are created by imposing a thermal anomaly of 150 to 350 K on a 50 km wide domain at the base of the model (700 km depth); the plate right above the thermal anomaly is 40 Myr old. Partial melting is modeled using the batch-melting solidus and liquidus in anhydrous conditions. We model the progressive depletion of peridotite and its effect on partial melting by assuming that the melting degree only strictly increases through time. Melt is accumulated until a porosity threshold is reached and the excess melt is instantaneously extracted. The rheology of the partially molten peridotite is determined using a viscous constitutive relationship based on a contiguity model, which enables to take into account the effects of grain-scale melt distribution. The density varies as a function of the melt fraction and of the depletion of the residue. We analyze the kinematics of the plume as it impacts a moving plate, the dynamics of time-dependent small-scale convection (SSC) instabilities developing in the low-viscosity layer formed by spreading of hot plume material at the lithosphere base, and the resulting thermal rejuvenation of the lithosphere. The onset time and the vigor of SSC and, hence, the new equilibrium thermal state of the lithosphere atop the plume wake depends on the Rayleigh number (Ra) in the unstable layer at the base of the lithosphere, which is controlled by the temperature anomaly and rheology in the plume-fed layer. For vigorous, hot plumes, SSC onset times do not depend on plate velocity. For more sluggish plumes, SSC onset times decrease with increasing plate velocity. This behavior is explained by differences in the thermal structure of the lithosphere, due to variations in the spreading behavior of the plume material at the lithosphere base. Reduction of the viscosity in partial molten domains and decrease in density of the depleted residuum accelerate and enhance the vigor of small-scale convection in the plume-fed low-viscosity layer at the lithosphere base. It also reduces SSC onset times, leading to more effective erosion closer to the plume-lithosphere impact.

Les officiers de Plume de l'Amérique française entre 1669 et 1765 / Get the peace, the rest and the abundance, the officiers of the Pen of French America (1669-1765)

Melisson, Céline 19 November 2012 (has links)
For almost a century, 476 men embodied the offices of the Pen in the colonies of French America. They received a royal commission or one from his highest colonial representative. From the foundation of the department of The Marine to the reform of Choiseul, they represented the State in territories which underwent major evolutions during these 96 years: the wars but also the administrative apportionments after the treaties of Utrecht (1713) and Paris (1763). To understand this administration, we chose to study its elements and at the same time to analyze the transformations of the navy ministry as well as those of the colonies. From this context, which enabled to know the administrative structures, we showed the evolution of the administrative practices and also the duty in itself. The profile of these men shows that the Officer of Feather in these colonies became during this century, or approximately, a colonial state employee.

Development and Implementation of Diagnostics for Unsteady Small-scale Plasma Plumes

Partridge, James Michael 14 January 2009 (has links)
This research seeks to increase the applicable range and sensitivity of Triple Langmuir Probes (TLPs) and Retarding Potential Analyzers (RPAs) in the characterization of sub-centimeter scale, unsteady plasmas found in micropropulsion and other non-propulsive applications. The validation of these plasma diagnostics is accomplished by their implementation in the plume of a Micro Liquid-fed Pulsed Thruster (MiLiPulT) prototype developed and MEMS fabricated by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. A current-mode TLP (CM-TLP) theory of operation for the thin-sheath and the transitional regimes is expanded to include the Orbital Motion Limited regime applicable to low density plasmas. An optimized CM-TLP bias circuit employing operational amplifiers in both a differential amplifier configuration as well as a voltage follower configuration has been developed to adequately amplify current signals in instances where traditional current measuring techniques are no longer valid. This research also encompasses novel sub-microampere signal amplification in the presence of substantial common-mode noise as well as several a priori electromagnetic interference elimination and filtering techniques. The CM-TLP wires used in the experiments were designed with a radius of 37.5 micron and a length of 5 mm. Measurements were taken in the plume of the MiLiPulT at 2.0 cm, 6.0 cm and 10.0 cm downstream of the exit using a linear translation stage. Reduced electron temperature and electron number density profiles for a set of filtered CM-TLP raw currents are presented. The results indicate increased accuracy due to successful amplification of CM-TLP current signals at the risk of op-amp saturation due to inherent electrical noise of the plasma source. This research also includes the experimental validation of two new and distinct collimating RPA design types. Specifically, these design improvements include a 406 micron diameter single channel bore and a multi-channel plate (MCP) consisting of sixty-four 2 micron diameter bores, respectively. Both of these collimators relax the Debye length constraints within the electrode series and increase the instrument's range while minimizing the presence of space charge limitations. The single channel needle also has the added advantage of providing a relatively small cross-section to the incident plasma, thus minimizing pressure gradients and shock effects inherent to bulkier instrumentation. Experimental results obtained in the plume of the MiLiPulT are benchmarked against those of a traditional gridded RPA (having a 650 micron grid wire gap) and are reduced using an iterative fuzzy logic algorithm. Modifications to the classical RPA current collection theory include a thorough treatment of geometrical flux limitations due to an electrically floating cylindrical channel of high diameter to length aspect ratio. The differences between true and effective RPA collimating channel transparencies in the presence of a Maxwellian plasma are also addressed.

Use of Fire Plume Theory in the Design and Analysis of Fire Detector and Sprinkler Response

Schifiliti, Robert P. 18 January 2000 (has links)
This thesis demonstrates how the response of fire detection and automatic sprinkler systems can be designed or analyzed. The intended audience is engineers involved in the design and analysis of fire detection and suppression systems. The material presented may also be of interest to engineers and researchers involved in related fields. National Bureau of Standards furniture calorimeter test data is compared to heat release rates predicted by a power-law fire growth model. A model for calculating fire gas temperatures and velocities along a ceiling, resulting from power-law fires is reviewed. Numerical and analytical solutions to the model are outlined and discussed. Computer programs are included to design and analyze the response of detectors and sprinklers. A program is also included to generate tables which can be used for design and analysis, in lieu of a computer. Examples show how fire protection engineers can use the techniques presented.
