January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to analyze The New World Border (1996), by Guillermo Gómez-Peña, and Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987), by Gloria Anzaldúa, in order to show how these writers approach identity matters faced by Chicanos in the US, since it is not easy for them to choose between keeping their traditions and living the American way of life. According to the authors, the mere act of crossing the Mexico/US border alone does not necessarily result in crossing the "frontiers" that really separate these immigrants and their offspring from Americans, that is, the cultural and economic barriers. Nevertheless, the Chicanos fight for the right to be heard. Anzaldúa and Gómez-Peña reveal the power of Chicano hybridism, represented in their experiments with language, writing in English and Spanish, prose and verse, thus emphasizing the rupture of frontiers, including that of literary genres. This dissertation addresses the importance of the literature produced by Chicanos, since their writings reveal the extent of Chicano contribution to American cultural life and society / Orientador: Giséle Manganelli Fernandes / Coorientador: Manuel Fernando Medina / Banca: Álvaro Hattnher / Banca: Norma Wimmer / Banca: Paulo Sérgio Nolasco dos Santos / Doutor

January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: Dea Loher, playwright born in Bertolt Brecht's country, reinvents political theater in the 90s trying to give back to theater its social place that stimulates discussion. With the rising of capitalism and the appearance of mass media, according to some authors, theater lost its space to the media based on the consumption of images. Loher's proposal is to discuss post-modern issues through literature resorting to traditional dramatic aesthetics that link to the epic theater and the Brechtian V-Effekte, as well as recourses found in the post-dramatic aesthetics. Together with these theatrical concepts, Loher adopts from quantum physics the Uncertainty Principle by the physicist Heisenberg and also some cinematographic techniques by the group "Dogma-95" created by the Danes Lars Von Trier e Thomas Vinterberg to show on stage politics in a blurred way with filmic breaks and interruptions in order to provide the audience with the possibility of reflection as she takes away from the spectator a privileged view. This mixture of styles can be named "hybrid theater" in reference to the studies of hybridism by the Professor Homi Bhabha. In Loher's most complex play, Innocence, the playwright presents a kind of drama with all these characteristics revealing a portrait of a society where people live searching for a meaning for their own lives having to deal with themes such as death, abandonment, faith, God, money, prejudice and love with the objective of reflecting on the problems of the post-modern society, the falling of the metarratives and the project of human emancipation and the rising of simulacra. The playwright proposes this to her reader, opting for a cyclic and episodic drama that is apparently chronologic, but that reveals throughout the story a collapse of space and time. This resumption of aesthetics elements reveals a certain hybridism of the theatrical form, which deviates Loher from the epic and the post-dramatic and ... / Mestre

The Relationship between Rewards and Recognition, Service-Oriented Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, and Customer SatisfactionWilches, Guillermo 21 May 2009 (has links)
Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that employees with positive attitudes towards their leaders and working environment can contribute to significant organizational outcomes; which can include customer satisfaction, loyalty, and increased profits. Employee’s service-oriented behaviour has been extensively proposed in literature as the result of a multiple set of organizational variables. However, limited empirical research has explored the links between the behaviour and attitudes of front line employees that lead to constructive service. Based on a sample of 4,220 employees from a well-known Canadian charter bank, this study empirically examined the relationships between rewards and recognition, perceived organizational support (POS), and leader-member exchange (LMX) and its effect on employee’s service oriented organizational citizenship behaviours (COBs). In addition, a theoretical analysis of the relationship between service oriented behaviour, customer satisfaction, and increased company performance explains the importance of empirically investigating the observed relationships. The results provided support for the claim that perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange mediate the relationship between rewards and recognition and service-oriented organizational citizenship behaviours (service COB, loyalty COB, and participation COB) when different sources of rewards and recognition are in effect (e.g.., from manger, non-manager, and understanding of system). This study is relevant to the management of service industries that depend on front-line employees to deliver quality service, and to clarify the environmental and situational aspects that influence employee’s service behaviours. These factors are crucial in face-to-face interactions which can result in business profit or loses.

Job Insecurity and its AntecedentsBlackmore, Caroline Virginia January 2011 (has links)
The current research aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the antecedents of job insecurity, and specifically focused on the perceived job insecurity; importance and probability of events likely to affect one’s total job. The aim of the current study was to explore relationships between the perceptions of perceived organisational support (POS), perceived employability, role ambiguity and role overload, and job insecurity. A questionnaire made up of seven separate scales investigated the perceptions of 100 employees from several different organisations experiencing change (e.g. recently been through a change process, currently going through a change process, about to go through a change process in the near future). Results confirmed three of the main hypotheses of the current study, suggesting negative relationships between POS, perceived employability, role overload and the dependent variable job insecurity (probability). Further analyses indicate that POS is a significant predictor of job insecurity (probability), and role overload and employability are significant predictors of job insecurity (importance). Overall, this paper provides support for the relationship between the antecedents highlighted in this study and job insecurity. Practical implications and directions for further research are discussed.

Orientador : Prof. Dr. Clóvis Gruner / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do Paraná, Setor de Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História. Defesa: Curitiba, 05/09/2017 / Inclui referências : f. 197-201 / Resumo: Este trabalho analisa a história em quadrinhos Sandman, escrita por Neil Gaiman e publicada pela editora norte americana DC Comics durante os anos de 1988 e 1996. A análise se fixou nas relações desta com o pós-modernismo e, principalmente, em como a morte é representada na publicação, uma vez que a morte não apenas aparece como algo importante na narrativa, onde vários personagens são mostrados encontrando o fim de sua vida, como também esta aparece enquanto personagem. Pelo fato da personagem Morte ser caracterizada não da forma mais tradicional, com vestes negras e uma foice, mas sim como uma garota gótica divertida e apaixonante, torna-se propício um diálogo acerca da morte no contexto da obra, o pós-modernismo, e o quanto este é semelhante ou diferente à representação da personagem. Desta forma, trabalhando as relações com a morte ao longo da História, mas fixando-se no contexto proposto, dentre os anos 1988 e 1998, pretende se compreender como a sociedade se comporta diante da morte, como esta encara o ato de morrer, por vezes o negando ou ignorando, sempre o afastando, e como isso pode ser relacionado com uma representação da morte tão diferente, tão encantadora, como alguém de quem não se quer fugir, mas encontrar imediatamente. Palavras-chave: histórias em quadrinhos; morte; pós-modernismo; Sandman; / Abstract: This work analyse the comic book Sadnamn, writen by Neil Gaiman and published by the north american publishing company DC Comics amont the years 1988 and 1996. The analysis was focused in the relations os this with the post-modernism and, mainly, in how the death is represented in the publication, once death shows like something importante in the story, where lots of characters are shown finding the end of their lives, and also is shown like a character. By the fact that the character Death is characterized no in the most tradicional way, with black robes and a sickle, but like a fun and lovely goth girl, its possible a dialogue about death in the contexto of comic, the post-modernism, and how similar or different is this to the representation in the comic books. This way, writing about the relations with death over the History, but keeping in the contexto, among the years 1988 and 1998, its intended to understand how the society behaves in the face of death, how it faces the act of dying, many times denying ou ignoring, aways pushing it away, and how this can be related with a very different representation of death, so lovely, like someone that you don't want to run away from, but meet immediately. Key-words: comic books; death; post-modernism; Sandman;

Burn patients often present intense pain that is difficult to control, requiring continuous use of opioids to maintain adequate analgesia, such that it is often necessary to administer adjuvant medications. Receptor antagonists N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) produce analgesia and ketamine, a representative of this class of drugs, is widely used in burn patients. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of ketamine S(+), administered intravenously during anesthesia, as an adjuvant drug in relieving postoperative pain for burn patients submitted to surgery and the consumption of tramadol as an indicator of the quality of this analgesia.Following approval by the Ethics Committee of the Botucatu School of Medicine and free, informed consent, 24 patients were divided randomly into two groups: G1 (n=13) received midazolam (2.5 mg), ketamine (S) (1 mg/kg of bw), fentanyl (75 mg) and propofol target controlled infusion (0.5 to 2.0 μg/mL); and G2 (n=11) received midazolam (2.5 mg), 0.9% saline, fentanyl (75 mg) and propofol target controlled infusion (0.5 to 2.0 μg/mL).The syringes were prepared by a nurse, who did not participate in the surgical anesthetic Introdução e Literatura 16 procedures, in a 5 ml syringe containing 3 ml of solution. The patients were monitored via a cardioscope, noninvasive blood pressure and pulse oximetry.Hydration was achieved with 0.9% saline. When heart rate and systolic blood pressure (above 20%) was increased and/or when signs of discomfort due to pain were observed, fentanyl was administered (from 50μg to a maximum of 3 mg/kg of bw). Postoperative analgesia was achieved with tramadol (100 mg) at the end of surgery. Patients were assessed for pain at discharge from the recovery room (M0) and 3 h (M1), 6 h (M2) and 12 h (M3) postsurgery, using verbal numeric and visual analogue scales. Postoperative analgesia was maintained with codeine (30 mg)... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
