New collective structures in the Z=76 stable odd neutron nucleus, 187Os

Sithole, Makuhane Abel January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Low- and medium-spin bands of 187Os have been studied using the AFRODITE array, following the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements of 􀀀 coincidences, angular distribution ratios (RAD), polarization and -intensities were performed using eleven High Purity Germanium (HPGe) clover detectors. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been signi cantly extended and ve new bands have been added to the level scheme. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM), cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky- Bogoliubov (CNSB) formalism and Quasiparticle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (QTR) model. Systematic comparison of bands with the neighbouring isotopes has also been made. Comparison of the models with experimental data shows good agreement.

Search for low spin collective structures in 158Er and 159Er

Dinoko, Tshepo Samuel January 2013 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Lying in a rapidly-changing transitional region between nuclei that may behave as spherical vibrators (N ≤ 88) or good rotors (N ≥ 92), the N = 90 isotones present a unique testing ground where new nuclear collective phenomena may be uncovered. As part of a general investigation of collective structures and the coupling of single-particle states to these structures, the 150Sm(12C,4nγγ) and 150Sm(13C,4nγγ) reactions at a beam energy of Elab = 65 MeV were used to study the low and medium spin structure of 158,159Er nuclei below spin 20~. The γ-γ coincidence events were detected in the nine escape-suppressed HPGe Clover detectors using the AFRODITE γ-ray spectrometer at the iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences. DCO ratios and γ-ray polarization measurements were used to establish the spins and parities of newly observed and confirm previously established rotational bands. The observed bands will be discussed in terms of both traditional quadrupole rotational-vibration models and recent predictions of octupole correlations in the N = 90 isotones and neighbouring nuclei. The data obtained will be compared with the spectroscopic systematics of neighbouring nuclei.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Low- and medium-spin bands of 187Os have been studied using the AFRODITE array, following the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements of γ − γ coincidences, angular distribution ratios (RAD), polarization and γ-intensities were performed using eleven High Purity Germanium (HPGe) clover detectors. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been significantly extended and five new bands have been added to the level scheme. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM), cranked Nilsson-StrutinskyBogoliubov (CNSB) formalism and Quasiparticle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (QTR) model. Systematic comparison of bands with the neighbouring isotopes has also been made. Comparison of the models with experimental data shows good agreement. The configurations of some of the previously observed bands have been modified. Most importantly, the coupling of 2+ γ band to the 11/2+[615] neutron configuration is observed for the first time.

Salvador

Optical polarization anisotrop in nonpolar GaN thin films due to crystal symmetry and anisotropic strain

Misra, Pranob 14 February 2006 (has links)
In this work, we focus on the optical response of GaN thin films grown along various orientations. The optical properties of strained M- and A- and unstrained C-plane GaN thin films are investigated, and the results are explained with help of band-structure calculations. We calculate the strain-induced band-structure modification using the k.p perturbation approach. The valence-band (VB) states are modified affecting both the transition energies as well as the oscillator strengths. We observe that C-plane GaN does not show any in-plane polarization anisotropy, when an isotropic in-plane strain is applied. For the case of M- and A-plane GaN, one expects to see an in-plane polarization anisotropy even for the unstrained case. Additionally, the in-plane strain significantly changes the band structure and the symmetry of the VB states. The three transitions, involving electrons in the conduction band (CB) and holes in the top three VBs, will exhibit a very different polarization characteristic than the ones for C-plane GaN. These transitions are predominantly x, z, and y polarized, respectively, for a certain range of in-plane strain values, present in our samples. For M-plane GaN thin films, two fundamental transitions can be identified, which occur when the electric field vector E is perpendicular (x-polarization) and parallel c (z-polarization). These transitions give rise to a transmittance spectrum separated by 50 meV at room temperature with respect to each other. This result in a polarization filtering of an incident linearly polarized light beam after transmission, because the electric field component with x-polarization is more strongly absorbed than with z-polarization. This filtering manifests as a rotation of the polarization vector toward the c axis and can be as large as 40 degrees for an initial angle of 60 degrees, for our samples.

New concepts for bolometer arrays for exploring the Universe at millimeter wavelengths

Rigaut, Olivier 06 May 2014 (has links)
Since its discovery in 1964, the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in the field as of millimetre-length wavelengths became a major stake of experimental research in the field of cosmology. In particular, its anisotropies in temperature, measured for the first time by satellite COBE then more finely by the experiment WMAP and the PLANCK satellite. The predicted existence of anisotropies of polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background is currently been part of the privileged field of experimentation of the study of the CMB. Indeed, the proof of exists modes B of polarization, single signature of the paramount gravitational waves, currently is the object of an intensive experimental research by the means in particular of the instrument BICEP2 which would have detected its signature in 2014 in values of the tensor report on scalar R = 0.2. Project QUBIC makes party of these experiments intended to reveal the modes B of polarization thanks to its instrument based on the technique of the interferometers and the development of bolometers array, asking for a thorough field of investigation including, amongst other things, the solid state physics, the physics of the low temperatures and cosmology. The thesis presented here is within this framework, with for objective making of a bolometers array whose performance and optimization should make it possible to acquire the necessary sensitivity to the observation of the B-mode polarization. The various experimental techniques acquired with the CSNSM of Orsay indeed make it possible to consider the optimization of the key elements of the bolometers array while being pressed in particular on amorphous alloy of NbxSi1-x for making of an optimized thermal sensor, and on an innovative material, titanium-vanadium alloy, for the clarification of an effective superconducting absorber of radiation, whose low specific heat must make it possible to reach a response time of the detector about ten millisecond, value of the response time necessary to an effective reading of the signal of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The manuscript of thesis here present has as an ambition to develop the physical principles necessary to the field of investigation of work to be achieved. Thus, this study proposes to work out the various elements of a bolometer, joining together a thermal sensor optimized as well as an absorber of radiation of low specific heat, making it possible to consider the clarification of a bolometers array optimized within the framework of the project QUBIC whose observation campaign is envisaged during 2015 with the dome C of the south pole.
