Investigação de dioxinas, furanos, hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos no material particulado e gases emitidos por motores diesel / Investigation of dioxins, furans and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in particulate material and gases emitted by diesel engines.

Raimundo Paiva da Nobrega 16 April 2007 (has links)
Investigar a mutagenicidade do material particulado e gases coletados. / To investigate emission of chlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in heavy duty diesel engines, through the analysis of particulate material and gases in the exhaust. To verify mutagenicity of collected particulate material and gasesous sample extracts. Material and Methods: The engine emissions tests were done in dynamometer test bench according to 13-Mode Cycle, using brazilian engines, vehicle application. A mini dilution tunnel was used to obtain particulate matter and gaseous sample. PCDD/Fs and PAHs analyses were carried out in a certified national laboratory. Dioxins and furans were analyzed according with Method 8290 (USEPA, 1994) and PAHs by Method TO13A (USEPA, 1999). The mutagenicity analyses were done in accordance with Ames test (TA98) Results: The measurements of dioxins and furans in diesel engines operating in controlled conditions in dynamomter bench test, had indicated emissions values in general below the detention limit of the analytical method. In one of the samples it was verified that the OCDD was above the detention limit, while in another one this occurred for OCDF and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDF. In relation to 16 PAHs it was verified the presence of the following compounds: Naphthalene, Acenaphthylene, Acenaphthene, Fluorene, Phenanthrene, Antracene, Fluorantene, Pyrene, Benzo[a]antracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene and Benzo[k]fluorantene. The average value of the sum of PAHs found in five samples was 3,580.5 µg.g-1. The PAHs found in this study indicates some similarity with available literature for values in % and µg/g of particulate matter. The Ames test showed that the collected particulate material from diesel engines presents high mutagenic activity. Conclusion: The emission of PCDD/Fs, for the level of technology of the tested Diesel engines revealed little significant, considering the specified fuel, method of analysis and limit of detention used. In relation to the 16 PAHs, the tests results had indicated that diesel engines has an important contribution in the formation of these compounds. The high mutagenic activity observed shows that the emissions of Diesel vehicles are potentially toxic. The continuity of studies for definition of the regulation of these pollutants is recommended.

Andersson, Caroline, Eklund, Henrik January 2016 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to measure and evaluate the air quality onboard two Swedish ships, and compare the results with the exposure limits laid out by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) and the Swedish population’s exposure to various substances. The results of this study were also meant to be helpful to form new advice and recommendations to minimize exposure and also to provide material for future studies. During approximately one week onboard the two ships data were collected using passive samplers to register levels of benzene, nitrogen dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The results indicated that the air quality onboard the two ships were generally good. All measured concentrations were well below safety applications and it did not differ very much neither between ships nor compared with the Swedish population’s exposure. In conclusion, Swedish sailors onboard Swedish ships are not in greater danger of toxic air pollutants onboard compared to when they are at home.

Biosurveillance des retombées atmosphériques à l'aide de bryophytes : suivi des hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques (HAP) à diverses échelles spatio-temporelles / Biomonitoring atmospheric deposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with bryophytes at various spatial and temporal scales

Foan, Louise Marie 07 June 2012 (has links)
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) emitted by human activities during incomplete combustion of organic matter (industry, domestic heating, road traffic…). Due to their low degradation rates, toxicity, long-range transport and bioaccumulation in organic matter, PAHs are monitored in the atmosphere (Council Directive 96/62/EC of 27 September 1996). Bryophytes, more commonly called mosses, have been used during the past three decades for biomonitoring air quality. Because of their biological characteristics, these terrestrial plants are excellent bioaccumulators of airborne pollutants. However, few studies concern PAH biomonitoring and they are usually restricted to studies limited in time and space. In this context, the thesis aims to validate bryophytes as tools for biomonitoring atmospheric deposition of PAHs on various space-time scales. The first step of this work consisted in developing the analytical procedures in order to validate PAH analysis by liquid chromatography associated with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD), liquid-liquid extraction of PAHs from bulk deposition and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of PAHs from mosses. The latter was optimized with a factorial design and was completed by purification tests with solid phase extraction (SPE). Field studies were then carried out to evaluate temporal trends of PAH levels in mosses at seasonal, annual and historical scales, as well as spatial trends, at local and regional scales. A study undertaken on herbarium mosses sampled in Bertiz Natural Park (Navarra, Spain) between 1879 and 2007 leaded to the identification of PAH historical emission sources. Bryophytes appear as excellent “witnesses” of the past atmospheric contamination. An annual biomonitoring study (2010-2011) at Bertiz showed seasonal trends of PAH content in mosses Hylocomium splendens (Hedw.) Schimp., which are related to variations of PAH emissions and weather conditions, particularly precipitations. Moreover, the annual study revealed a fractionation of PAHs while they are transferred from total deposition to the mosses, as the affinity of PAHs for deposition samples was related with their solubility and their affinity for the plant was related to their lipophilic property (KOW). Thus, monitoring PAH fluxes in total deposition does not give an a priori estimation of PAH contents in the ecosystems. Finally, multivariate analysis of the spatial distribution of PAHs in the species Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. sampled in Spain (Navarra), France (Île-de-France) and Switzerland (Swiss Plateau and Basel area) leaded to the characterization of the atmospheric contamination sources in the different areas and the influence of environmental parameters such as elevation and pluviometry.

Grânulos plásticos em praias arenosas: avaliação de um método amostral quantitativo e da contaminação química / Plastic pellets in sandy beaches: evaluation of a quantitative sampling method and the chemical contamination

Cesar, Mara Fisner 11 December 2012 (has links)
Plastic pellets are easily found in marine environment and due to its characteristics they may concentrate and bring organic pollutants. Santos bay represents a major economic center for the state of São Paulo because of Santos Port and the Cubatão industrial complex in its surroundings. This place was chosen for the development of the study for the great number of pellets found in the sandy surface of its beaches. This study aimed at (1) evaluating a sampling methodology for plastic pellets based on the use of transects perpendicular to the seawater line and made by diggings equally distant from one another (samplings). It also aimed at (2) analyzing the concentration, composition and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) contamination on the pellets sampled on sandy beaches, considering different spatial scales and resin kinds which the plastic pellets were made from as well as their exposure time in the environment. As a result of the evaluation of sampling methodology the sampler diameter was defined which provides the best combination between the time and the volume of sampled sediment. Apart from that the depth of the major occurrence of plastic pellets in the sedimentary column was confirmed and it was established that transects are impracticable for this kind of procedure. The development of future studies in order to figure out the best sample design is suggested once the use of transects was not efficient for plastic pellets sampling in depth. According to analyses results the PAHs concentration and composition on the plastic pellets vary largely among sampling sites on the same beach. In order to obtain real pollutant variability on one beach, samples taken from different sampling sites are necessary to avoid a wrong over sizing of results. The plastic pellets analyses taken from different depths in sandy sediment showed similar results to those from the surface with a high variability in PAH concentration and composition. Among the resins there was a difference on PAH concentration (polyethylene > polypropylene) and exposure time, showing larger concentrations on darker pellets, that is longer exposed in the environment. The contamination in the studied area comes from the mixture of compounds from petrogenic and pyrolitic sources and the PAHs potential toxicity in plastic pellets analyses generally reflect an imminent risk to organisms. Complementary studies are also necessary to investigate the possibility of pollutant bioaccumulation in organisms.

Study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation and antimicrobial production by marine invertebrate derived fungi.

Passarini, Michel Rodrigo Zambrano 09 June 2008 (has links)
Seventy three fungi representatives of distinct taxonomic groups, isolated from cnidarians collected from north coast of São Paulo State, were submitted to RBBR dye decolorization tests and to MIC. Thirteen fungal selected from the decolorization test were submitted to pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene degradation assays. Seven fungi showed satisfactory PAH degradation results. Among them Aspergillus sulphureus (8.2A) presented the best results degrading pyrene (99.7%) and benzo[a]pyrene (73.6%). Regarding the MIC experiments, 21 isolates were able to inhibit the growth of B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli EPEC and V. parahaemolyticus. Penicillium sp. (12.12) presented the best result (0,0078 mg/mL). The 23 isolates that showed potential biotechnologic were taxonomically characterized. Results derived from the present work suggest that cnidarians-derived filamentous fungi have a great potential for biotechnological application, in particular on bioremediation of marine environments contaminated by PAHs.

Independent strategies for cultivation and metagenomics contribute to further microbiological knowledge, enabling studies with non-cultivable about the "native microbiological status and its potential role in bioremediation, for example, of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPA's). Considering the biome mangrove interface fragile and critical bordering the ocean, this study characterizes the native microbiota mangrove potential biodegradability of HPA's using a biomarker for molecular detection and assessment of bacterial diversity by PCR in areas under the influence of oil companies in the Basin Petroleum Geology Potiguar (BPP). We chose PcaF, a metabolic enzyme, to be the molecular biomarker in a PCR-DGGE detection of prokaryotes that degrade HPA s. The PCR-DGGE fingerprints obtained from Paracuru-CE, Fortim-CE and Areia Branca-RN samples revealed the occurrence of fluctuations of microbial communities according to the sampling periods and in response to the impact of oil. In the analysis of microbial communities interference of the oil industry, in Areia Branca-RN and Paracuru-CE was observed that oil is a determinant of microbial diversity. Fortim-CE probably has no direct influence with the oil activity. In order to obtain data for better understanding the transport and biodegradation of HPA's, there were conducted in silico studies with modeling and simulation from obtaining 3-D models of proteins involved in the degradation of phenanthrene in the transport of HPA's and also getting the 3-D model of the enzyme PcaF used as molecular marker in this study. Were realized docking studies with substrates and products to a better understanding about the transport mechanism and catalysis of HPA s / O conhecimento sobre os procariotos nativos em locais de risco favorece a aplica??o de biotecnologias para biorremedia??o. Comparison of Urinary PAHs among Firefighters and Asphalt Pavers

Aquino, Theodore 23 March 2016 (has links)
Firefighters and asphalt pavers are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during various work activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate urinary PAH levels and compare these bio-monitoring levels among firefighters, asphalt pavers, and non-occupationally exposed individuals. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) urinary PAH levels were used for non-occupationally exposed controls. When compared to the NIST standard for smokers and non-smokers, firefighters demonstrated statistically significant differences in urinary concentration differences for the following metabolites: 2-OH-fluorene, 3-OH-fluorene and 1-OH-pyrene, which were lower in firefighters than the NIST mean for smokers. 1-OH-phenanthrene, 2-OH-phenanthrene and 3-OH-phenanthrene were higher among world trade center exposed firefighters than the NIST mean for smokers. When firefighters were compared to the NIST non-smoker standard, firefighters demonstrated elevated levels in all tested PAH biomarkers due to a mixture of smokers and non-smokers in the firefighter cohort. Asphalt workers had statistically significant higher urinary concentration elevations in 2-OH-fluorene, 1-OH-phenanthrene and 3-OH-phenanthrene as compared to the NIST smoker mean. When asphalt pavers were compared to the NIST non-smoker mean, asphalt pavers had statistically significant increases in all tested PAH biomarkers, with the exception of 2-OH-phenanthrene. While firefighters did not demonstrate a substantial change in urinary PAH metabolite levels compared to control populations of smokers and non-smokers, asphalt pavers experienced concentrations that were in some cases increased by orders of magnitude compared to NIST controls. Future research may be needed to evaluate any potential health risk posted to occupational exposed asphalt pavers.

STUDIUM BIOGENNÍCH POJIV / STUDY OF BIOGENOUS BINDERS

Cupák, Petr January 2011 (has links)
oundry production, which forms an integral part of the engineering industry, is a source of waste with a negative impact on the working and living environment. The pressure on greening the production in all production branches of industry does not dodge the foundry industry and technical engineers seek out possibilities of decreasing the negative impact of the production of casting on the environment. An important source of environmentally dangerous waste in foundry operation is the use of organic compounds during the preparation of shaping and core mixtures. Their substitution with materials that would ensure similar technological features of the shaping and core mixtures as the organic materials used hitherto and at the same time decrease the amount of solid, liquid and gaseous ecologically undesirable compounds used in or arising during the preparation and use of shaping and core mixtures, would be significant for decreasing the ecological burden connected to casting production. A promising group of materials usable as components of shaping and core mixtures are the biopolymer materials which can substitute the organic connective systems used in the production of foundry cores by the means of the so-called hot processes – Hot-Box and Warm-Box. This work focuses on the exploration of the technological and ecological features of several biopolymer materials available on the domestic market which have the potential to become a full alternative of the binders used so far on the basis of urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and furan resins.
