Online Child Pornography Offenders and Risk Assessment: How Online Offenders Compare to Contact Offenders Using Common Risk Assessment Variables

McWhaw, Andrew 06 September 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study was to compare online child pornography offenders and contact offenders along the predictive items of the Static-2002 actuarial risk assessment tool, as well as, several other items and scales predictive of recidivism. In addition, the study wished to determine if the Static-2002 was a well-equipped to assess online offenders. 120 subjects were assessed in this study, 53 online child pornography offenders, 53 child molesters, and 7 offenders who committed both a contact and online offense. The research identified a number of similarities between the two groups of offenders, including a finding that the two groups did not significantly differ in age. The most pronounced differences were found on the several measures of criminality used in the study where contact offenders scored significantly higher. The Static-2002 was found to not be well suited for use with online offenders as the tool had difficulty assessing their sexual deviancy.

Internet censorship offending : a preliminary analysis of the social and behavioural patterns of offenders

Carr, Angela Unknown Date (has links)
During the past decade, significant public concern has focused on the use of the Internet to access child pornography and other legally objectionable material. Media reference to individuals involved in such activity typically portrays them as socially isolated ‘paedophiles’, ‘perverts’ and ‘sexual predators’ whose offence behaviour is encouraged by on-line associations with others who share their interest in this material. Although academic literature does not tend to adhere to the sensationalism of these views, it too suggests that on-line networks may be important in understanding the behaviour of individuals who seek to gratify an interest in legally objectionable material.A major aim of this thesis was to examine the relationship between involvement in Internet based social activity and involvement in accessing legally objectionable material via the Internet. As such, data collected during the investigation of a sample of 145 individuals identified as using the Internet to access legally objectionable material was subjected to a series of explorative analyses. These analyses revealed significant associations between individuals’ use of Internet applications facilitating directed, two way communication (eg. Email and ICQ) during the process of accessing legally objectionable material and indicators of increased personal investment in offence related activities.A second goal of this thesis was to identify variables associated with offenders’ decisions to engage in on-line social interaction during the process of accessing legally objectionable material. In turn, criminological and communications theory and research pertaining to the interpersonal behaviours that individuals engage in during criminal actions, and the characteristics of individuals who make use of socially facilitative Internet applications, was reviewed. Based on the findings of this review, it was hypothesised that offenders who engage in regular interaction with others outside of the Internet environment would be more likely than those who did not to seek out opportunities for interaction in the Internet environment. In line with this hypothesis, further systematic and detailed analysis of the data revealed an association between opportunities for interpersonal interaction in an offender’s home or work environment and the likelihood that offenders would make use of Internet applications facilitating online social interaction.

Gender Representation in the Media : A Critical Analysis of the Construction of Female Sexuality in Men's Pornographic and Non-Pornographic Magazines

Tognela, Jennifer January 2011 (has links)
This thesis applies the radical feminist perspective set out by MacKinnon (1993) and Dworkin (1995), to analyze the construction of female sexuality within popular Canadian men’s pornographic magazines and non-pornographic magazines. A mixed methods approach was used to analyze the images and text within the feature articles of the selected magazines. Results revealed that women continue to be constructed as sexual objects within both categories of magazines, but the earlier link identified by MacKinnon and Dworkin between violence and sexuality was on longer apparent. Instead, women were a sexual puzzle that the magazines attempted to unpack. Rather than a strict dichotomy between pornographic and non-pornographic magazines, a continuum of grey emerged whereby the level of explicitness between the two magazines increased as the continuum progressed from left to right, thereby demonstrating the pornographication of mainstream media, as per McNair (2002).

No entanto, as metáforas, muitas vezes, parecem produzir certa facticidade do uso sexual anal, relacionado à penetração e à passividade. / The "anal subject" is revealed as the scientific epistemologies criticism which assumes that neutrality and universality are attributes embracing both those who produce knowledge as well as what is produced. In this perspective, the asshole has been used, metaphorically, in political and epistemological debates which clames for deconstruction of the heterossexual standards and contributes to production of knowledges involved by the body erotization, and also to the creation of policies that privileges anal pleasure and criticizes the reproduction of "north-south" division in Queer Theories. However, the metaphors often seems to produce certain facticity of sexual anal uses, often related to penetration and passivity. The enactment of prolapses in pornography, almost exclusively performed by actresses, made us wonder if pornography can go beyond the meaning of "sexual pedagogy" and going to be characterized as a field of imaginative power and creation of bodily possibilities that challenge anatomical and physiological truths. We ask also about the fact that anal penetration is commonly the only referent for sexual anal pleasure and, consequently, the basis to think about the sexual relations from the "activity/passivity" binarity. Thereby, we chose as the primary objective to analyze the sexuality and eroticism provisions which are driven by pornographic prolapse at the website prolapseparty.com. The research material was consisted of texts, graphics and videos on this website contents and were debated from a post-structuralist perspective, inspirated by Foucault's theories. We believe that the fantasies in this website contents may be experienced by the creation of elements that encourage imaginations about sexual acts going beyond the screen of the computer and being part of everyday lifes. The sexual uses of the asshole does not involve the penetration or the anal insertion, but the holding capacity of elasticity and excrescence, wich have led us to argue that those images engender "sexual pleasures of surfaces". Another important element to mention is the close relationship between the actresses as a way to denote that the sexual pleasure provided by the displacement of the rectum is different from an act of "violence". Finally, the exhibition of techniques that moves and creates genitals and prolapsed anus abdicates from the body naturally and consequently emphasizes that sexual pleasure is manufactured.
