VIDUTINIOJO IR VYRESNIOJO AMŽIAUS MOKINIŲ POZICIJOS, VERTINANT SOCIALINĮ ELGESĮ, TYRIMAS / The investigation of the students’ position of middle and senior ages towards the evaluation of social behaviour

Rakaitytė, Jurgita 29 May 2006 (has links)
The main aim of the research dealt with the analysis of middle and senior town and rural school aged boys and girls’ positions towards the evaluation of their social behavior. In order to achieve the present, aim three hypotheses were raised. Subsequently two of them were confirmed and one of them was due to be rejected. According to the results of the questionnaire, it was revealed that students from towns are deviant. After the summing of results and comparing them to the second method of the research, it was noticed that the two hypotheses were confirmed once more and coincide with the data of the research analysis: students from towns are deviant, boys from both town and rural are more inclined to misdemeanor than girls. However it is impossible to state that junior students are more inclined to crime. Thus, this hypotheses was rejected.

Health inequalities among older people in Great Britain

Breeze, Elizabeth January 2002 (has links)
This thesis aims to describe health inequalities among older people in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s and to assess whether various personal circumstances and experiences contribute towards this variation. Three sources of data are used: the Longitudinal Study; the first Whitehall cohort of male civil servants; and baseline quality of life information from the MRC Trial of the Assessment and Management of Older People in the Community (MRC Study). Housing tenure, car availability, and employment grade are the main socioeconomic measures used, but also social class and income. Findings: People disadvantaged in mid-life socioeconomic circumstances continue to experience increased risks of mortality, insitutionalisation, poor self-reported health and functioning 20-30 years later. Smoking and cardio-respiratory factors in middle age partially accounted for the differentials found in the Whitehall Study. The MRC Study revealed worse prospects for five dimensions of health-related quality of life among people in rented homes compared to owner-occupied ones, even among those who were deemed independent. Symptoms of ill health, and health behaviours accounted for over 40% of the housing tenure differentials in quality of life among these independent people. Being in a deprived or densely-populated area was not as strong a discriminator of quality of life as personal housing-tenure. Finally, people whose socioeconomic circumstances become worse in late middle age have greater risks of poor health outcomes than those who stay advantaged. The findings on benefits of improvements in socioeconomic circumstances are more mixed and complicated by ill health leading to apparent upward socioeconomic mobility. Conclusions: The three studies provide evidence of both long-term implications of socioeconomic position in mid-life and continuing relevance of socioeconomic position in old age. Although personal factors and health symptoms contribute to health inequalities in old age they are also seen as a possible product of socioeconomic position.

Matrices score-position, algorithmes et propriétés / Position-weight matrices, algorithms and properties

Liefooghe, Aude 04 July 2008 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis is a part of the algorithmic and the combination of text and is apply to bio-informatic. More precisely, they relate to the location of grounds weighted modeled by position weIght matrices scoring in an unweighted text. This work is applied to the problem of biological research binding sites of transcription factors in a genome. This applrcation contributes to understanding the regulation of genes. We tackled two problems, find a single. matnx in a text and then the simultaneous search of a whole matrices. To accelerate existing algonthms, we have been inspired by exact research algorithms known for their effectiveness. The difference is that the dice are scoring position probabilistic grounds usmg. functions score. We must integrate the distribution of these functions in the search algonthms. Regardmg the first problem we proposed an extension of the Knuth. Morris and Pratt algorithm witch is based on a pre-treatment ta optimize route of ground along the text .Regarding the second problem we used an indexing structure in order to factor all matnces. ThIs structure uses distributions of scores associated to each matrix. ln both cases we are dea!mg with upstream part of baselines. We chose to pre-treat matrices in relation to the bio-mformatic application because the binding sites of transcription factors data are relatively stable over time. These algorithms have been implemented in a software available online called TFMscan. They have been validated on a large-scale bases data transcription factors Jaspar and Transfac .

Neither here nor there: localizing conflicting visual attributes

Whitaker, David J., Badcock, D.R., McGraw, Paul V., Skillen, Jennifer January 2003 (has links)
No / Natural visual scenes are a rich source of information. Objects often carry luminance, colour, motion, depth and textural cues, each of which can serve to aid detection and localization of the object within a scene. Contemporary neuroscience presumes a modular approach to visual analysis in which each of these attributes are processed within ostensibly independent visual streams and are transmitted to geographically distinct and functionally dedicated centres in visual cortex (van Essen & Maunsell, 1983; Zihl, von Cramon & Mai, 1983; Maunsell & Newsome, 1987; Tootell, Hadjikhani, Mendola, Marrett & Dale, 1998). In the present study we ask how the visual system localizes objects within this framework. Specifically, we investigate how the visual system assigns a unitary location to objects defined by multiple stimulus attributes, where such attributes provide conflicting positional cues. The results show that conflicting sources of visual information can be effortlessly combined to form a global estimate of spatial position, yet, this conflation of visual attributes is achieved at a cost to localization accuracy. Furthermore, our results suggest that the visual system assigns more perceptual weight (Landy, 1993; Landy & Kojima, 2001) to visual attributes which are reliably related to object contours.

Position Location of Remote Bluetooth Devices

Bielawa, Timothy M. 21 July 2005 (has links)
The recent proliferation of Bluetooth Devices has caught the attention of hackers. With Bluetooth devices being put in everything from cell phones to PDAs to laptops, the abuse of this technology could have an even bigger impact than the viruses and malware running rampant on the internet. Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology intended to interconnect consumer electronics devices of all kinds. The same features that make Bluetooth so attractive to manufacturers, also makes it attractive to hackers. Bluetooth devices can quickly setup up ad-hoc networks with other, previously unknown devices. Hackers have started to take advantage of the ease with which a connection can be established along with the average user's lack of computer security knowledge to break into PDAs, cell phones to steal address books and credit card numbers. One of the largest obstacles that must be overcome in Bluetooth security is the mobility of devices and the relatively short duration of connections. In the Internet, threats can often be traced back to a source, and in many cases the source of the threat can be shut down. However, in a Bluetooth Network devices connect directly to one another, and there are no wires to follow to pinpoint the offending device. This thesis will explore the techniques for the location of Bluetooth Devices. An ideal position location system would be one that operates completely within the Bluetooth Specification. Such a system will be able to use any available Bluetooth Device to find the location of other devices. The primary focus of this thesis will be on such a system, with an overview of traditional radio position location techniques and Bluetooth so that we might gain some insight into how these techniques can be applied to Bluetooth. Data are presented from an extensive set of measurements to relate Bluetooth RSSI and distance on CSR BlueCore02 devices. Finally the results of the data are analyzed to give a rough estimate of the range error that would be incurred in the implementation of such a system. / Master of Science
