Coordination of reactive power scheduling in a multi-area power system operated by independent utilitiesPhulpin, Yannick 13 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis addresses the problem of reactive power scheduling in a power system with several areas controlled by independent transmission system operators (TSOs). To design a fair method for optimizing the control settings in the interconnected multi-TSO system, two types of schemes are developed.<br />First, a centralized multi-TSO optimization scheme is introduced, and it is shown that this scheme has some properties of fairness in the economic sense.<br />Second, the problem is addressed through a decentralized optimization scheme with no information exchange between the TSOs. In this framework, each TSO assumes an external network equivalent in place of its neighboring TSOs and optimizes the objective function corresponding to its own control area regardless of the impact that its choice may have on the other TSOs.<br />The thesis presents simulation results obtained with the IEEE 39 bus system and IEEE 118 bus systems partitioned between three TSOs. It also presents some results for a UCTE-like 4141 bus system with seven TSOs. The decentralized control scheme is applied to both time-invariant and time-varying power systems. Nearly optimal performance is obtained in those contexts.

Wide area measurement-based approach for assessing the power flow influence on inter-area oscillationsAntoine, Olivier 25 November 2013 (has links)
Power systems have been historically designed at a time when the production was<p>centralized and the electricity had to be transmitted to the loads from the closest power<p>plant. Nowadays, there is an increasing integration of decentralized and intermittent pro-<p>duction. Moreover, the energy market coupling has enabled the transfer of electric power<p>for economical purposes. Also, former isolated power systems are now interconnected for<p>reliability and financial reasons.<p>All of these changes make difficult to predict the future behavior of the grid. Studies<p>are done in order to plan for the future needs of the system. However, building new in-<p>frastructures takes time and it is expected that these needs will not be completely fulfilled<p>in all the parts of the grid. Therefore, transmission of active power could be limited by<p>the existing infrastructure. For example, the presence of inter-area oscillations is often<p>the limiting factor when a high active power is transmitted on a long transmission line<p>between two groups of generators. Since higher levels of active power are exchanged on<p>longer distances, problems of inter-area oscillations may arise in power systems previously<p>not affected by this phenomenon.<p>In this work, a measurement-based approach, able to predict in the short-term the<p>future behavior of oscillations, is presented. This approach is complementary to the<p>long-term planning of the grid.<p>The mandatory first step towards a measurement-based approach is to have the ability<p>to extract useful information among a huge quantity of data. To face this issue, some<p>comparisons of data mining algorithms are performed. The proposed method combines<p>two decision tree algorithms to obtain both prediction accuracy and comprehensibility.<p>The second required step for building a measurement-based model is to take into<p>account the limitations of the measurements. Two types of wide area measurements are<p>used, synchronized measurements from PMUs and traditional unsynchronized data from<p>the SCADA/EMS system. Oscillation monitoring using PMUs is especially of interest<p>and an approach is presented to post-process damping estimates. This post-processing<p>method consists in a noise reduction technique followed by a damping change detection<p>algorithm.<p>Finally, the method, combining these two steps, is implemented to analyze the Con-<p>tinental European grid. This implementation takes place in the context of the European<p>project Twenties. The results, using several months of measurements, are described in<p>detail before being discussed.

Real time optimization for Volt/VAr control in electric power distribution systems.Restrepo, Juan Diego Echeverry 30 June 2016 (has links)
Currently, power utilities face challenges in order to provide energy considering minimum requirements of power quality and reliability due to the absence of control and monitoring infrastructure, aging assets, growing demand, amongst others. In Brazil, the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL) establishes specific power quality and reliability indices. Power utilities should attend the limits for those indices by improving intelligence of network using IT systems, installing Intelligent Electric Devices (IEDs), smart meters and sensors, amongst others. Additionally, communication infrastructure is needed to provide the monitoring of load conditions and distribution system state. Optimization and decision-making tools are important for developing smart grids. Voltage control and reactive power management (Volt/VAr) are automation techniques that can be used in distribution systems. These practices lead to benefits for the utilities such as improvement of reliability and efficiency of the system, minimization of operation and maintenance costs, amongst others. In the present dissertation a methodology for decentralized control (Volt/VAr) was developed, through the coordination and control of load tap changers (LTCs) in power transformers and capacitors banks located at the substation, as well as capacitor banks and voltage regulators scattered throughout the feeders. State Estimation was utilized, which allows the application of the Volt/VAr Control methodology in real time environment. The optimization algorithm developed in this work was implemented through simulations in a test network and in a real network which validated the proposed methodology showing the potentiality of the mathematical model. The results of the proposed method showed voltage profile improvement over the day for the network tested as well as a 7% decrease in power energy losses. These results were achieved without exceeding the number of operations per day defined for all control devices.

Geração de energia elétrica - Um enfoque histórico e institucional das questões comerciais no Brasil / Power Electric Generation - A historic and institutional view of the commercial issues in Brazil.Rosim, Sidney Olivieri 10 March 2008 (has links)
The characteristics of the Brazilian Electrical Sector, BES, are similar to those of other classic productive sectors. The commercial issues, that should have been strongly emphasized in all BES life cycle, have only in the two last decades received the attention it deserved. This work aimed at identifying how business relations developed, particularly the commercial issues of the companies belonging to the BES system; that is, suppliers and supplied components of the said system. This project was divided into three parts: 1990 to 1996 - \"Conception of privatization\", 1997 to 2002 - \"Operational execution of privatization programs\" and 2003 to 2006 - \"Restructuring model\". Concepts related to assured power supply, electricity reallocation mechanism and initial contracts were analyzed. The text still describes BES historical evolution from the end of the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. The prevailing external scenarios that contributed to the present situation, e.g., Mexico Crises, Washington Consensus and 2001 Electricity Supply Restriction were also taken into account. Due consideration has also been given to: marginal operational cost calculation, settlement price for the differences (spot prices) and the existing process of power commercializing, which encompasses free and regulated contracting ambience. Efficient Simulation Methods of Large Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Resources : Theory and ApplicationsShayesteh, Ebrahim January 2015 (has links)
Electrical energy is one of the most common forms of energy these days. Consequently, electric power system is an indispensable part of any society. However, due to the deregulation of electricity markets and the growth in the share of power generation by uncontrollable renewable energies such as wind and solar, power system simulations are more challenging than earlier. Thus, new techniques for simplifying these simulations are needed. One important example of such simplification techniques is the power system reduction. Power system reduction can be used at least for four different purposes: a) Simplifying the power system simulations, b) Reducing the computational complexity, c) Compensating the data unavailability, and d) Reducing the existing uncertainty. Due to such reasons, power system reduction is an important and necessary subject, but a challenging task to do. Power system reduction is even more essential when system operators are facing very large-scale power systems and when the renewable energy resources like hydro, wind, and solar have a high share in power generation. This thesis focuses on the topic of large-scale power system reduction with high penetration of renewable energy resources and tries to pursue the following goals: • The thesis first reviews the different methods which can be used for simplifying the power system studies, including the power system reduction. A comparison among three important simplification techniques is also performed to reveal which simplification results in less error and more simulation time decrement. • Secondly, different steps and methods for power system reduction, including network aggregation and generation aggregation, are introduced, described and discussed. • Some improvements regarding the subject of power system reduction, i.e. on both network aggregation and generation aggregation, are developed. • Finally, power system reduction is applied to some power system problems and the results of these applications are evaluated. A general conclusion is that using power system simplification techniques and specially the system reduction can provides many important advantages in studying large-scale power systems with high share of renewable energy generations. In most of applications, not only the power system reduction highly reduces the complexity of the power system study under consideration, but it also results in small errors. Therefore, it can be used as an efficient method for dealing with current bulk power systems with huge amounts of renewable and distributed generations. / <p>The Doctoral Degrees issued upon completion of the programme are issued by Comillas Pontifical University, Delft University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. [pt] REFORÇO DAS CONDIÇÕES DE ESTABILIDADE DE TENSÃO NA OPERAÇÃO DO SISTEMA ELÉTRICO / [en] VOLTAGE STABILITY REINFORCEMENT ON ELETRIC POWER SYSTEMS18 June 2002 (has links)
linhas e transformadores passaram a restringir menos a
Hoje as
interpretação física do fenômeno.Índices abrangentes e
conceito introduzido neste trabalho.
[en] As the electric power transmission networks became more
interconnected, the thermal limits of lines and
transformers restrict less the power transmission.
Similarly, the use of static systems of reactive power
compensation increases the power transmission capacity in
systems whereas before they were limited by problems of
angular stability. Actually, transmission lines are more
loaded and create the voltage stability problem.
In this work, voltage stability conditions are assessment
by nodal conditions associated to the maximum active and
reactive power flow that can be transmitted from generators
to loads. These nodal conditions are assessment using an
analytical tool, based on a simple but sound mathematical
background, modelling a straightforward physical
haracterisation of the phenomena. Comprehensive and
meaningful indices are obtained from system Jacobean matrix.
They indices indicate the operating region in V x P,Q
curve, the MVA margin to the maximum load, the relative
importance among buses, the buses loading ranking, a
measure of difficult for power transmission, and the
influence indices that relates power margins between two
operating points, which characterises efficiency or not,
for example, of a control action. In order to reinforce
voltage stability condition, the thesis proposes a method
consisting of three sequential stages. Firstly, voltage
stability is analysed, deciding network critical bus using
the power margin calculation. Next, the critical
transmission path is decided, which is a new concept used
in this work, in between several existing used to transport
generators power for that critical bus. Then, critical
branch is obtained through this path, concept introduced in
this work. An optimal power flow program is used to
alleviate load flow in the critical branch. The sequence
starts again with the stability condition assessment in the
new operating point. All stages are repeated until
resultant margins are judged suitable. Load, generation and
voltage-controlled bus by shunt reactive power compensators
could be considered critical bus. The nodal method used is
the only one capable of handling any bus type.Several cases
are shown, illustrative as well as real systems using real
operating points,including imminent voltage collapse
situations. It is verified that the proposed method really
produces the desired results.
